A Palm Coast man who went to a home to collect a debt Saturday afternoon was instead met by an armed man who forced him into a car and demanded cash, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

The 21-year-old victim told deputies that he pulled into the driveway of the home on Pony Lane just after 5 p.m. when Brandon Washington, 20, forced the victim into a car.

Deputies said that vehicle was driven by Meghan Smith, 22, and Manuel Cabral Jr., 22, was a passenger.

Washington, who was reported to be carrying a gun in his waistband, directed Smith to drive the victim to a home on Pope Lane where the victim said he could get cash.

Once at the home, the victim was allowed out of the car. Rather than retreiving money and returning, he called 911 to report the crime.

When the victim failed to come back out, Smith and Cabral left the scene, but were stopped by a Flagler County deputies at the intersection of Pheasant and Phoenix Lanes in Palm Coast.

Both were charged with false imprisonment and were being held at the Flagler County Inmate Facility without bond Sunday morning. The victim’s car was recovered at the Pony Lane home.

Washington remained at large Sunday morning.

Flagler County Sheriff Donald Fleming said four women, all acquainted with Washington (and all White?), were arrested earlier Saturday after a robbery of a restaurant in the Old Kings Commons Shopping area in Palm Coast.

Washington is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 160 pounds, with short black hair and a goatee.

Woman convicted for selling pre-teen for sex

A woman pleaded guilty this week after prosecutors say she helped a man pay to have sex with a pre-teen girl.

38-year-old Tina Day pleaded guilty to promoting prostitution. Police say Surgio Viveros paid Day $15 to have sex with the girl. Viveros, was convicted Tuesday of paying twice to have sex with the child.

“It involved a betrayal of trust and a sense of isolation,” said Jackson Deputy Prosecutor Katie Mote. “It is especially upsetting in this case that the victim is a child.”

Viveros is a neighbor of Day’s at a Seymour apartment complex. He is now in the Jackson County Jail, not far from another man in the case, Jose Romero Mendez. Mendez, who is Day’s boyfriend, didn’t pay her to have sex with the girl, he just went ahead and molested her. He was convicted on two counts of child molest. The sex acts against the child happened over a two-month period over the summer.

“I think that’s a natural question to ask, for what could this money have been used,” Mote said. “I don’t know the answer.”

Police learned of the crime when the girl told a school counselor. Neighbors at the apartment complex are offended by the crime, but glad the men and Day were caught.

“I think it’s scary. I think that’s gross, just nasty,” one neighbor said.

Prosecutors have questioned more than two-dozen witnesses in the trial of Tashawana Annette Vanhardenberg, 23, of Copperas Cove, who’s charged with injury to a child by omission in the 2007 death of her 35-month-old son.

Vanhardenberg is on trial in state district court in Gatesville.

Antoine Marshon Shields, 28, and Vanhardenburg were arrested after their son Keynen Jacobe Vanhardenberg died on March 24, 2007 in a local hospital.

Shields pleaded guilty to murder in Gatesville district court earlier this month just as a jury was being seated in his capital murder trial.

Shields also pleaded guilty to injury to a child.

He must serve 30 years in prison before he’s eligible for parole.

Prosecutors were not seeking the death penalty, but he would have faced a life term without parole had he been convicted of capital murder.

Vanhardenberg is charged with failing to protect her son from the man who killed him and with failure to timely seek medical attention for the boy who died one month short of his third birthday.

Vanhardenberg’s attorney says, however, the felony charge against the defendant should be reduced due to circumstances of the death.

Central Texas Man Pleads Guilty In Toddler’s Death

St. Charles police shoot, kill one robbery suspect, charge the other with murder

St. Charles police say an officer who shot and killed an armed robbery suspect Wednesday morning was acting in self-defense.

Authorities identified the suspect as 28-year-old William Steele of St. Louis.

The name of officer involved in the shooting was not released. The officer is a 15-year veteran of the department and is on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. But police say preliminary indications are the officer did nothing improper.

The incident happened after police responded to an armed robbery at a convenience store. Two suspects drove away, prompting a pursuit.

Police say Steele got out of the car, tried to enter a home. When confronted by police, he allegedly threatened officers with a handgun and was shot. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The second suspect, Jack Field, 21, of O’Fallon, was charged with felony murder, first-degree robbery and armed criminal action. He was jailed on $500,000 cash-only bond.

Jury says triple murderer should die for his crimes

A man described by a prosecutor as an “executioner” was sentenced to death Thursday after being found guilty of committing a 2005 Owasso triple homicide. A 10-year-old girl was killed, along with her mother and the mother’s husband.

Clarence Goode Jr., 31, received the punishment for all three counts of first-degree murder from the same Tulsa County jury that returned guilty verdicts against him Wednesday.

Assistant District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler told the jury Thursday that Goode deserves “no other punishment than death” after being convicted of the killings of fifth-grader Kayla Burchett; her mother, Tara Burchett-Thompson, 25; and the slain woman’s husband, 28-year-old Mitch Thompson Jr.

Their bodies were found on the morning of Aug. 26, 2005, in the couple’s bedroom at 9707 N. 112th East Ave. in Owasso.

Tessa Amaro, aunt of Kayla Burchett and sister of Tara Burchett-Thompson, said after Thursday’s sentencing verdict “there’s no celebrating today, but justice was served for our family.”

More than two years after a shocking triple murder in Owasso, one of the suspects goes to trial. Jury selection began on Monday for the first-degree murder trial of 31-year-old Clarence Goode, junior. The News On 6’s Steve Berg reports he’s accused of fatally shooting Mitch Thompson, his wife Tara Burchett-Thompson, and her 10-year-old daughter, Kayla Burchett.

Police cars lined up outside the Owasso home on the morning of August 26th, 2005. Inside were the bodies of a man and woman, and most disturbingly, a 10-year-old girl, Kayla Burchett. She was a victim of fate.

Kayla lived with her grandmother in Collinsville but had asked to spend the night at her mother’s house. Sometime during the night, prosecutors say three men came into the house. Clarence Goode, Kenneth Johnson, and Ronald Thompson, the cousin of the male victim Mitch Thompson have been charged in the case. Prosecutors say they shot and murdered the couple and Kayla.

Tragically, it was Kayla’s grandmother who found the bodies in the morning, after she realized the girl had forgotten her cheerleading outfit.

The wigger in the middle, related to the male victim, brought two of his nigger pals with him to slay his cousin, his cousin’s wife, and his wife’s 10 year old daughter. You know, sometimes, even death isn’t penalty enough. What a nauseating case here.

Theft-Ring Suspects Charged in Unsolved Homicide

Two people arrested Thursday in an alleged theft ring in Fayetteville also face charges for a homicide in Robeson County.

Anthony Edric Pinkson, 29, and Loretta Lynn Goins, 40, were charged Thursday in connection with the theft ring in which the suspects claimed to be the owners of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and guns that were reported stolen, the Cumberland County sheriff’s office said.

Investigators then linked them to the Dec. 7 shotgun slaying of Andy Oxendine, 57, who was killed during a home invasion on Philadelphus Road in Pembroke.

Both will be returned to Robeson County to face murder charges.

In the theft ring case, Pinkston, of 20203 Lee Lane, Laurinburg, is charged with larceny, breaking and entering, possession of a firearm by a felon, felony conspiracy, possession of stolen property and one count of safecracking.

Goins, of 3623 Shem Creek Drive, is charged with larceny, breaking and entering, and felony conspiracy, possession of stolen property and one count of safecracking.

Margaret Tyler, 55, of 2524 Penny Drive, was also charged with possession of stolen property. Authorities said she allowed the items to be stored at her house.

First court appearances were pending for Pinkston and Goins. Tyler made a first court appearance Thursday in Cumberland County.

TYLER, Texas — A man killed his girlfriend, then filleted and cooked parts of her body before calling police to tell them what he was doing, authorities said Sunday.

Christopher Lee McCuin, 25, called 911 on Saturday and told an emergency dispatcher he had killed Jana Shearer, 21, and was boiling her body parts at his mother’s home, said Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith.

When authorities arrived at the home, they found Shearer’s mutilated body, one ear boiling in a pot of water on the stove and a fork sticking out of some human flesh sitting on a plate on the kitchen table.

Authorities said it was unclear whether McCuin consumed any part of Shearer’s body.

“We cannot prove that he did,” Smith told The Associated Press. “He was either going to, had been or led us to think that he was doing it.”

Authorities believe Shearer, 21, was abducted from her home Friday night and killed. Her death and mutilation was apparently the beginning of a crime spree that also included McCuin allegedly stabbing the boyfriend of his estranged wife and breaking into a business. The stabbing victim is in critical condition at an area hospital, officials said.

McCuin, of Tyler, about 110 miles east of Dallas, was charged with capital murder. He was being held in the Smith County Jail on a $2 million bond Sunday and did not have an attorney, officials said. He was scheduled to be arraigned Monday, Smith said.

Before he called 911, McCuin told his mother and her boyfriend to look in their garage, authorities said. There the couple saw the remains of Shearer. McCuin’s mother and her boyfriend fled the home and flagged down a police officer. McCuin dialed authorities after they left.

A man who answered the door Sunday night where the body was found declined to comment.

Shearer appeared to have died from blunt trauma to her head, Smith said. She may have been kidnapped Friday night, when her mother witnessed her get into McCuin’s truck.

“There was no struggle but she could see the girl left with no shoes, no purse and no cell phone,” Smith said.

McCuin then drove to his estranged wife’s home, where he stabbed William Veasley, 42, Smith said. McCuin was still in that home when deputies arrived, but escaped in his car after a short chase, Smith said.

“We thought it was a disturbance or an assault,” Smith said.

McCuin wasn’t seen again until Saturday morning, when he arrived at his mother’s home and called her into the garage so she could “come see what he had done,” Smith said.

When sheriff deputies arrived, McCuin barricaded himself in the home for a short time before coming out. After he emerged, officers entered and found Shearer’s body, Sgt. Gary Middleton said.

Detectives were trying to determine where the slaying happened. They think McCuin drove to his mother’s home with the dead woman in the back seat of his extended-cab pickup, Smith said.

Two teenagers have been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shootings of their foster mother and her mother-in-law.

Jeffery Byrd Johnson Jr., 15, and James Earl Garrett, 17, are being held in the Williamson County Juvenile Detention Center.

They are scheduled to appear in court on Friday in Charlotte, Tennessee.

Police found 39-year-old Mary Clark and her 66-year-old mother-in-law Gail Clark dead inside her home on Lincoln Road, near Highway 47 in White Bluff, Dickson County early Tuesday morning.

District Attorney Dan Alsobrooks wants the teens to be tried as adults.

“The law allows us in certain very serious cases to transfer juveniles and try them as adults,” he said. “It doesn’t get anymore serious then a double homicide case.”

While both foster kids are charged with the murders, Alsobrooks believes further investigation will uncover one gunman.

He said, “The juvenile petitioners at this time are charging this as a joint enterprise, in other words, that these two defendants were working in concert with each other. That’s what the charges are at this point of time. Later in the trial, after the investigation is complete, it will come out who the shooter was.”

Why the teenagers would allegedly shoot and kill their foster mother and her mother-in-law is a question police have still yet to answer.

Alsobrooks said, “That’s something the investigation is still working on. I can’t comment on that at this point of time, but it will be part of the evidence when we get to trial.”

The Department of Children Services said Clark cared for children with behavioral and emotional problems.

A DCS spokesman said records do not indicate the two foster sons had a history that could have triggered the shooting.

Police said Gail Clark was visiting from Massachusetts.

Rutherford County Sheriff’s deputies arrested three people they think are involved in a La Vergne shooting Sunday morning.

A 29-year-old woman survived the attack on Beesley Road.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested 34-year-old Robert Adams, 27-year-old Kesha Adams and 33-year-old Kristie Michelle Ray. They all live in La Vergne.

Deputies issued a nationwide alert for 24-year-old Bryiant Overton of Murfreesboro. They believe he is armed and dangerous.

If anyone knows where he is, they should call police.

Jackson Police and U.S. Marshals have arrested two people wanted for stabbing a man to death in Nashville, Tennessee.

Authorities say the victim, Jerry McEwen, 54, was trying to be a good Samaritan and get a woman’s purse back from thieves who had just snatched it when he was stabbed to death in the parking lot of a Nashville grocery store on Tuesday.

The suspects, a man and a woman, fled to Jackson, where they were picked up by U.S. Marshals Thursday evening and arrested by Jackson police at 357 Ridgeway Street. They are identified as Robert Earl Williams, also known as Shadeed I. Rasta, and Stephanie Lynn Hudson.

Richard Griffin, supervisory deputy for the Marshals Service, said “investigative leads” led authorities to the house.

They discovered Williams had relatives in Jackson who live at the Ridgeway Street address. The getaway car was spotted under a tarp in the driveway.

The pair surrendered peacefully.

“They were transported by the Jackson Police Department,” Griffin said. “They will appear before a judge tomorrow (Friday) for an extradition proceeding and then be transported back up to Nashville.”

Williams has a lengthy arrest record. He had been paroled from prison only seven months before Tuesday’s purse snatching and murder.

The getaway car has been towed to the Jackson Police Department, where it will be processed for evidence.

Suspects Arrested in Death of Elderly Man

Two suspects have been arrested in the slaying of a 70-year-old man who was found dead in his Mesquite home Wednesday.

Toni Smith, 40, and Carl Hodge, 45, were arrested on charges of capital murder Thursday.

Relatives contacted police Wednesday when they hadn’t heard from the elderly man. Officers arrived on scene and entered the home on Summit St. to find Herbert William’s body.

Police said Smith had been an acquaintance of the victim’s for over 18 years.

Neighbors say police seized a knife and two bloody baseball bats from the scene. Authorities said Williams died due to blunt force trauma.

Two accused in death of 70-year-old Mesquite man

GIBSONTON - Monday’s shooting of two East Bay High School students near the entrance to the Carriage Pointe subdivision stemmed from one student ordering another to kiss his shoes, a neighbor says.

That student is the younger brother of two of the three teens charged in the shooting. They were ordered to be held without bail today at their first court appearance.

Investigators say Brian Alonzo Gainey, 17, shot the victims. Both he and his brother, James Benjamin Gainey, 16, will be tried as adults. The third suspect, Jeffrey Brian Argo, 19, drove the car used in the crime, deputies say. The three teens were charged with two counts of attempted murder and face a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Jessica Davis, 16, and Gregory Powell, 16, are still recovering at Tampa General Hospital. Davis was shot in the chest, and Powell was shot in the back, Hillsborough County sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter says. Their families have requested that no information about their conditions be released.

Brian Gainey turned himself in at about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday at Orient Road Jail, arrest records show. He lives at 2215 Murdock Blvd., Orlando.

About six hours earlier, James Gainey was arrested at the Juvenile Assessment Center in Tampa. He went there accompanied by his mother, Devaughn Duncan. The East Bay High freshman lives with Duncan at 7956 Carriage Pointe Drive, blocks away from where the victims were shot.

At 3:30 p.m. Monday, Argo drove the two Gainey brothers to the school bus stop to retaliate against the two students, according to an arrest affidavit.

Detectives said Argo told them all three of the young men got out of his 1990 maroon Nissan Maxima and that Brian Gainey fired a handgun at the students as they walked away from 8029 Carriage Pointe Drive, off Symmes Road.

Argo was arrested Monday night at Gibsonton Drive and U.S. 301, Hillsborough deputies say. He lives at 11318 Linarbor Place, Tampa. Argo was on probation for an armed robbery, records show.

Two N.C. State athletes are in trouble with the law for allegedly breaking into cars.

Police arrested football player Cedric Hickman, 21, and wrestler Christopher Sutton on Monday night after a caller reported seeing people looking into vehicles on Seabrook Avenue in Cary.

Hickman is charged with five counts of breaking and entering motor vehicles, possession of stolen goods and resisting arrest. He is being held on $50,000 bond.

Sutton posted a $51,000 bond and was released.

An N.C. State spokesman says both players were suspended indefinitely and that football coach Tom O’Brien and wrestling coach Carter Jordan have no comment.

A second suspect is behind bars in connection with Tuesday’s murder at the Last Chance Liquor Store on Dickerson Pike.

Darryl Thompson, 20, is being charged with criminal homicide.

Police say Thompson admits to taking part in the effort to rob Jarrod “Bo” Collins.

Authorities are also on the trail of a man named Reginald Adkins.

They believe he is the gunman who fatally shot Collins, 31, in the back.

Swat officers and the gang unit are on the streets looking for Adkins.

Evidence showed up late Thursday, which led to the identification of the two male suspects.

Brandy Lea Birdwell, 25, was charged with criminal homicide on Thursday.

She admitted to driving the two men to the store in her pickup truck and then driving them away from the scene after the shooting.

Police bust a suspected drug house in Cape Coral Friday and found more than just cocaine and heroin inside - they also found three children.

Elementary school students walk by the house every day from the bus stop.

“There was always a lot of cars in the driveway,” said Tyler, a 5th grade student.

There’s not much traffic anymore - the SWAT team broke down the door and found four people inside.

Two of them, Brooke Amidon, 24, and Damian Babb, 22, tried to run out the back door, according to police, but they didn’t get very far.

Police found chunks of heroin, cocaine and two AK-47 assault rifles hidden underneath a pile of clothing.

But the worst part is that it was all going on in front of children ages four, five and seven.

The children are with their mother.

The other two people living in the house, Eddie and Johnny Luster, 34 and 32-years old respectively, were also arrested.

All face drug trafficking and other charges.

The victim is most likely White - wiggers usually only work with niggers while killing one of their own. It’s extremely rare when a wigger/nigger combo commits a crime against a nigger. Nigger’s rarely allow a wigger or BCL tramp to be part of a crime against one of their own. That’s about the only thing I give niggers credit for. And of course by earning the title of “wigger” or “BCL” - it proves at least one thing, just how low these wannabe niggers are.

The face of Jackie “Angel” Curtis haunted Maya Derkovic for the past nine months.

Finally, the 18-year-old gang member and Orange County Jail inmate couldn’t keep her secret anymore.

In an effort to find peace, she told a jailer and later detectives how she choked 15-year-old Angel while two fellow gang members held the victim’s arms.

Derkovic’s story helped unravel a mystery that began Jan. 18 when Angel’s badly decomposed body was found along the edge of a retention pond near Goldenrod Road.

“What I did was terribly wrong,” Derkovic told the Orlando Sentinel in an exclusive interview from jail Monday night. “It’s time to ‘fess up to what I did and do the right thing.”

The Sheriff’s Office has charged Amiri “Sin” Lundy, 20; Dominique “D” Tolbert, 19; and Derkovic with killing Angel in an act of crude gang justice.

Lundy headed the 3rd World Rolling Sixties — a spinoff of the West Coast Crips, according to court records and interviews Monday. Known as “O.G.,” or the “Original Gangsta, ” he also was an ex-boyfriend of the girl whom he, Derkovic and Tolbert are accused of killing.

All three lured Angel to a retention pond near Goldenrod Road intending to kill her, said sheriff’s homicide Detective Brian Cross.

“She was set up,” Cross said Monday. “She knew these people and trusted them.”

Shortly after New Year’s Day, Derkovic told the Sentinel, Lundy grew paranoid that Angel was trying to set up him and his family to be attacked by the rival gang she belonged to. He accused her of stealing Lundy’s special book that held secrets and rules of the Rolling Sixties.

That’s when the idea of killing Angel came up, said Derkovic, who was the highest-ranking female in the gang and a friend of the victim.

“He made her seem to be like a spy.”

A few nights later — Derkovic said she thinks it was Jan. 9 — she and Tolbert were walking to her job at a bakery on Goldenrod Road. Lundy joined the two, telling them he had called Angel to meet them at a Hess gas station nearby.

When Angel showed up, the four walked toward the bakery. One of the men, Derkovic said, handed her a knife he had wrapped in a bandanna.

“He said, ‘You know what that’s for?’ and I said, ‘I know what you are talking about.’ “

They hung out in the neighborhood behind the bakery, ending up at the overgrown pond at the end of Alachua Street.

Angel borrowed Lundy’s phone to call for a ride home. After she handed the phone back, “I grabbed her,” Derkovic said.

Derkovic pulled out the knife, and the women struggled. Angel grabbed the weapon, and it broke. At one point, Angel grabbed Derkovic’s bandanna with her bloody hand.

Then the two men grabbed the victim’s arms, she said.

“That’s when I got on top of her,” Derkovic said. Derkovic said she grabbed Angel’s throat and pushed. Then she eased the pressure and pushed again.

A 15-year-old girl that was arrested in connection with an armed home invasion in July which resulted in the deaths of two men, is facing two additional felony charges. She will be tried as an adult.

Detectives with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit filed two charges of robbery with a firearm resulting in a death against Trisha Leigh Wofford Thursday.

She is already facing an armed home invasion robbery charge.

She will have her first appearance on the new charges Friday.

Victims Cristobal Perez Rodriguez, 24, and Jose Manuel Lopez-Rodriguez, 22, were found dead in their Mobile Gardens trailer at 137 Via Madonna in Englewood on July 23rd.

There are four other suspects in the case and their charges are listed below.

• Felton Joseph Stevens, 17, of Venice -two counts of second degree murder

• Tristan Anthony Hampton, 18, of Venice -two counts of second degree murder, robbery with a firearm involving death

• Mason Adam Washington, 31, of Venice -two counts of second degree murder, robbery with a firearm involving death

• Danielle Stephanie Williamson, 18, of Englewood -two counts of murder while engaged in a felony offense

Less than an hour after listening to her parents plead guilty to their role in a bizarre kidnapping case, 20-year-old Katelyn Kampf vowed she would neither forgive nor forget what they did to her.

“I want to tell them how much they hurt me … and how angry I am. I’ve never heard my mom say she was sorry, ever,” she said.

The case that has been called “an American family tragedy” began one morning September 2006, in North Yarmouth, Maine. Katelyn Kampf had just told her parents she was pregnant by her boyfriend, Reme Johnson, and had decided to keep the baby.

“They said, ‘it’s either abortion or adoption,’” she said.

Kampf said she got into a heated argument with her parents and contends that her mother held her down and spit on her and that her father “tackled her like a football player” when she left the house. They bound her and threw her in a car, Kampf said, in an effort to drive to New York and force her to have an abortion. She managed to escape in Salem, N.H., and call the police.

“After that I hoped I would never see them again,” said Katelyn Kampf.

But she did see her parents again, 13 months later in a Maine courtroom.

Three students were arrested and charged with felonies for having weapons on school property. But they claim they were threatened and only brought the weapons because they wanted to protect themselves.

The students say they got so fed up with classmates, they took matters into their own hands - taking troubles at school to a whole new level.

“Students should not be taking matters into their own hands. If there’s a student out there that’s having a problem, they need to come forward and tell somebody about the situation,” said Joe Donzelli of the Lee County School District.

Instead, deputies say two students, in separate two incidents Friday, brought weapons to school.

In Lehigh Acres, 14-year-old Juan Ventura was arrested for having two knives tucked away in a notebook in his book bag at Veteran’s Park Academy.

Deputies later found a third knife that was hidden away by Ventura’s girlfriend, Kelsey Berube. She was arrested too.

Ventura told deputies he had the knives for protection because he had been threatened by other students.

“We always treat that type of thing very seriously,” said John Sheehan of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Later that day a Bonita Springs Middle School student, Angel Gallardo, was arrested for bringing a gun and knife to the bus stop.

Sheriff’s reports say he tossed the gun behind a building and hid the knife on the bus. Deputies say Gallardo brought the weapons to school because of an ongoing dispute with other students.

NBC2’s Ryan Hughes went to his home and spoke to Gallardo’s uncle, Hector Gonzalez.

Gonzalez: Uh, no. I can’t tell that.

JENA, Louisiana — A video in which rapper-actor Mos Def asked students around the country to walk out October 1 to support the “Jena Six” escaped comment by this town’s mayor. But when John Mellencamp sang, “Jena, take your nooses down,” he took issue.

“The town of Jena has for months been mischaracterized in the media and portrayed as the epicenter of hatred, racism and a place where justice is denied,” Jena Mayor Murphy R. McMillin wrote in a statement on town letterhead faxed on Friday to The Associated Press.

He said he had previously stayed quiet, hoping that the town’s courtesy to people who have visited over the past year would speak for itself. “However, the Mellencamp video is so inflammatory, so defamatory, that a line has been crossed and enough is enough.”

Mellencamp could not comment immediately because he was on a plane from California to Indiana and had not heard about McMillin’s comments, publicist Bob Merlis said late Friday.

A brief note from Mellencamp posted Thursday on his Web site says he is telling a story, not reporting. “The song is not written as an indictment of the people of Jena but, rather, as a condemnation of racism,” it says.

Nooses hung briefly from a big oak tree outside Jena High School a year ago, after a black freshman asked whether black students could sit under it. A white student was beaten unconscious three months later, in December.

Six black students, four of them 17 years old and legally adults, were arrested.

Five were initially charged with attempted murder, although that charge has been reduced to aggravated second-degree battery as four of the older youths have been arraigned.

The only youth tried so far was convicted, but that conviction was overturned on appeal and the case was sent to juvenile court.

Mellencamp’s song opens, “An all-white jury hides the executioner’s face; See how we are, me and you?” As he sings, images of Jena, the high school and the tree are followed by video from the 1960s, including civil rights marchers, police beatings, and President John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King speaking. Still images include one of a protest sign reading, “God demands segregation,” a stylized drawing of people in Ku Klux Klan robes and an older image of a black man in shackles, begging.

“I do not want to diminish the impression that the hanging of the nooses has had on good people,” McMillin wrote. “I do recognize that what happened is insulting and hurtful.”

But, he said, “To put the incident in Jena in the same league as those who were murdered in the 1960s cheapens their sacrifice and insults their memory.”

At McMillin’s request, the Jena Town Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to create an interracial committee to study racial relations and suggest solutions to any problems.

3 Teens Jailed In Alleged Murder Plot, 2 Still On Loose

DURHAM, N.C. — Three Durham teenagers accused of ambushing and killing a 20-year-old man made their first appearance in a Durham County courtroom Wednesday as authorities continued their search for two more suspects in the same case.

A judge denied bond for Nicole L. Smith, 17, who allegedly lured the victim, Adam Christopher Lutz to her neighborhood on Aug. 8, where two other men were apparently waiting in a wooded area, a Durham County prosecutor told the judge. Smith has been charged with first-degree murder.

Those two men, Michael Harrison Hunt Jr. and Tyrone Lamont Baker, both 19 of Durham, according to investigators, then shot Lutz in the back of his head while he sat in his car. Authorities have also charged them with first-degree murder but are still searching for them.

Bond Denied For Teens In Ambush Slaying

DURHAM, N.C. — Two Durham teens charged in what authorities are calling an ambush slaying were ordered held without bond Friday.

Michael Harrison Hunt Jr. and Tyrone Lamont Baker, both 19, are charged with murder in connection with the Aug. 8 shooting death of Adam Lutz. The pair was arrested in Kinston Thursday afternoon after authorities received an anonymous tip regarding their whereabouts.

Authorities said Lutz was lured by another teen to a wooded area in Durham County to obtain the prescription pain-killer Percocet for $3 to $4 a pill. There, Hunt and Baker were waiting to ambush him, authorities said, adding they believe the pair stole guns from Hunt’s neighbor.

Blood-stained money was found in Lutz’ truck, according to a search warrant.

Investigators said an ongoing feud also might have been a motive in the slaying. Two weeks before the murder, Lutz and Hunt had a run-in, and witnesses told authorities that one of the men pulled a gun.

Plea Deals Reached in Ambush Slaying

Two people charged in what authorities call an ambush slaying of a 20-year-old Durham man entered a plea in court Tuesday, and one other person was expected to do so Wednesday.

Janeen Webb, 17, and Stephen Kyle Knight, 20, who were each charged with accessory after the fact to murder, pleaded guilty to a felony obstruction of justice charge in connection with the Aug. 8, 2006, shooting of Adam Christopher Lutz.

A third person, Nicole L. Smith, 18, who is charged with first-degree murder in the case, was expected to enter a plea Wednesday.

Authorities said Smith lured Lutz to a wooded area in Durham County, where two other men – Michael Harrison Hunt Jr. and Tyrone Lamont Baker, both 20 – were apparently waiting to shoot him. Webb and Knight, authorities said, drove a getaway car.

Lutz died from a single bullet to the back of the head, Durham District Attorney David Saacks said in court Tuesday.

Webb, Smith and Knight will be sentenced after they testify in Hunt’s and Baker’s murder trials, which likely won’t start until the spring.

Webb and Knight could each face a maximum of 30 months in jail, the judge said.

Police identify woman killed in shooting at Drury Inn

Couple had history of civil disturbances; Indiana State Trooper kills alleged shooter; woman, native of Kansas, worked at Drury Inn

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute woman, Jessica Jones, 26, is dead after a late-night shooting Wednesday at the Drury Inn Hotel near Interstate 70 and U.S. 41 on the city’s south side.

The alleged shooter, Major Jones III, 28, of Indianapolis, was killed by police after a high-speed chase on Interstate 70 that ended near the Monrovia exit west of Indianapolis, Terre Haute police said.

Witnesses told police Jones III dragged the victim into a van near the Ramada Inn while he was displaying a gun around 10:50 p.m. The van with the alleged gunman, the victim and four children inside then left the Ramada Inn, police said..

“Somehow [Jessica Jones] was able to get out of the van and try to run into the Drury Inn, where she was apparently employed,” said Terre Haute assistant chief of criminal investigations Bill Bergherm. The victim was unable to get into the hotel, which is locked for security reasons after a certain hour at night, he said.

At this point, “Major Jones shot the victim, fatally wounding her,” Bergherm said.

The alleged shooter then returned to the Ramada Inn, where he had an SUV parked, Bergherm said. He left the area in the SUV and headed east on I-70, taking the four children with him, Bergherm said.

Terre Haute, Vigo County and Brazil officers along with Indiana State Police all were involved in the pursuit that took place on the Interstate, Bergherm said. Police, using stop sticks, were able to flatten the tires of the SUV near I-70 and Indiana 59. Despite flattened tires, Jones continued to drive about 40 additional miles to the 62 1/2 mile marker, police said.

“At some point [Jones] released three of the children,” Bergherm said, but kept a fourth child with him. He then got into a confrontation with police and was fatally shot, he said.

The four children are in the custody of Putnam County Child Protective Services, Bergherm said. Grandparents, the parents of the victim, have been notified, he said.

Bergherm said the victim and the alleged shooter had been married at one time and have three children together. They had agreed to meet at the Ramada Inn, Bergherm said, for Major Jones to give a child support payment to Jessica Jones.

The children included two boys, ages 4 and 2, and two girls, ages 6 and 5, Bergherm said.
