Picture Shows Gunman Before Shooting, Police Say

1 Wounded In Barrage Of Gunfire On Indy’s East Side

Police have released a picture of a person they believe was involved in an outdoor shooting that left a man with a gunshot wound Tuesday on the city’s east side.

Authorities say they’re looking for the pictured male, saying he and perhaps others were involved in a barrage of gunfire during which Matthew Pittman, 23, was wounded.

A witness told police about 18 to 20 shots were fired at about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 2900 block of East 18th Street. It wasn’t clear how many people were involved.

Police went to the scene but didn’t find anyone shot. About 10 minutes later, police learned that Pittman was at Methodist Hospital, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Pittman told police he was driving a van on 18th Street when someone shot him. Police said the van is damaged but that the damage isn’t consistent with Pittman’s account of how he was shot.

Police obtained a picture of a male holding a rifle, and a witness told police that the picture was taken shortly before the shooting began. Police didn’t say who took that picture.

Authorities said the pictured weapon is a .223-caliber semiautomatic rifle, which fires bullets. Police said Pittman was wounded not by a bullet, but by shotgun ammunition.

Police said they found several .223-caliber shell casings at the shooting scene. At least one other vehicle was damaged by a stray bullet, police said.

Officials asked anyone with information about the person in the picture or the shooting to call them at 317-327-3733.

This link shows two lowly beasts

Four years ago police got unusual help ” disturbing, chilling help ” as women’s bodies kept turning up along the Prospect Avenue corridor.

They found the first victim in July 2004, then two more that Sept. 2. Over the next two days, two 911 calls from the same person made clear that investigators were chasing a serial killer.

The anonymous caller said that he had deposited the bodies. Then he said where to find three more tips that police quickly determined to be true.

A police task force formed. Angst and fear spread through the community. Within weeks, authorities arrested and charged Terry A. Blair, a convicted murderer also wanted for violating parole.

Today he starts a nonjury trial before Jackson County Circuit Judge John O’Malley on six counts of first-degree murder.

The victims died of broken necks, strangulation or both. Blair’s DNA allegedly matched semen left in at least one of them. But little other evidence has been made public, largely because a grand jury heard details in secret before indicting Blair.

It’s unknown what evidence prosecutors have, if any, linking the mysterious 911 calls to Blair. According to court records, the caller had an accent or some kind of speech impediment. If police sent recordings to the FBI for voice analysis, the defense never got a copy of the results, court filings show.

Defense lawyers asked the judge to approve costs of bringing in a dialect expert from Lawrence to testify, presumably about Blair’s voice and the tapes.

Defense lawyer Cynthia Dryden declined to comment on the case.

Citing the gag order issued by a judge, Jackson County Prosecutor Jim Kanatzar has declined to comment other than to say much of the evidence was highly scientific and technical.

Last month, Kanatzar said his office no longer would seek the death penalty against Blair, 46, in exchange for a deal to try the complex case before O’Malley without a jury.

Prosecutors also agreed to permanently dismiss charges against Blair in two other killings, three rapes and an assault.

The other killings involved the deaths of Nellia Harris, whose body was found outside the corridor area in September 2004, and Sandra Reed, found in the corridor area in June 2003.

Reed’s body was on a balcony above where victim Carmen Hunt’s body was found more than a year later.

O’Malley previously had ruled that the Harris and Reed killings and the assault and rape cases would be tried separately because, unlike the others, they were not linked through the 911 calls, the 2004 time frame and the corridor location.

According to court records, one of the rape victims said Blair raped her while choking her to the point that she passed out. The assault victim said Blair choked her with a “black rubbery rope.

All eight killings and the other crimes occurred while Blair was either on conditional release or was wanted for violating parole for a 1982 murder conviction.

In that case, he beat his 19-year-old former girlfriend to death with a stick. He called police to report Angela Monroe’s death but at first blamed it on another man. Later he said he killed her in anger that she was working as a prostitute.

Blair has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The trial is expected to last most of the week.

A convicted child molester working as a pastor at a Pottstown YWCA is facing charges for failing to register under Megan’s Law, authorities said.

Guy Jones, 42, is a convicted child molester who was working as a pastor after serving time in prison.

Investigators said Jones is facing charges after failing to register under Megan’s Law.

According to police, Jones worked as a pastor of the City of Refuge Baptist Church, which rented space at the Pottstown YWCA.

“This is a situation where someone gave us information and we followed up on it, and someone in the community knew what he was doing and knew it was something about his background, they provided information and police were able to follow up on it,” Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said.

Jones is currently awaiting trial for assault, unlawful contact with a minor, and child endangerment stemming from an incident at his home in February of last year.

The YWCA said it plans to review its procedures for renting space.

Claremont murder suspects charged; killing described

It began with some shoving. It ended with a father and son allegedly beating a man with a bolt cutter and stabbing him nine times.

Danny Ortega, 42, and his son Danny Ortega Jr., 20, both sat before a judge Tuesday morning in a Mantorville Courtroom. They were each charged with felony second-degree murder for the death of Troy Richard Ulrich, 42, of Claremont.

New details about the case emerged in court documents, indicating that a vicious fight between the Ortegas and Ulrich allegedly took place in an apartment garage before the victim’s murder.

“It was a horrendous, extremely violent confrontation,” said Dodge County Sheriff Gary Thompson. “It was extremely brutal.”

According to the criminal complaint, Ulrich had been drinking with two men in the garage area while they worked on cars. The Ortegas suddenly entered the garage. The dad confronted Ulrich and pushed him. Ulrich pushed back, and the two began fighting. Ulrich, whose left arm was amputated above the elbow, punched the father and knocked out a tooth.

The complaint states that the dad then took out a knife and began stabbing Ulrich. During the scuffle, the father dropped the knife, and the son picked up a bolt cutter and began hitting Ulrich in the head. Ulrich fell to the ground, and the father and son started kicking him in the head. The father picked up the bolt cutter and continued to hit Ulrich, and the son picked up the knife and stabbed the victim several times in the chest.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s preliminary report states that Ulrich suffered nine stab wounds and had several bruises on his face and head. The report concludes that Ulrich died of a puncture wound to the aorta — the largest artery in the human body.

The victim’s body was found Saturday morning in the hallway of the apartment building at 117 Second Street in Claremont by an 11-year-old girl.

During the court hearing, Dodge County Assistant Attorney Gary ReMine asked the judge to set bail for father and son at $1 million each. ReMine said the son had a ticket for a bus set to leave Austin at 11 p.m. Saturday for Florida, and said “we do consider him a flight risk.” He told the judge that the father tried to take the rap for his son.

“I think (the father) is responsible for the initial hiding of the knife and advising his son to leave,” ReMine said.

ReMine said he needs to review all the evidence before determining whether to seek first-degree murder charges against the two men. Thompson said he isn’t ruling out the possibility that more people could be arrested. He said his deputies have done an amazing job investigating this case, managing to arrest the suspects before the son had a chance to leave.

“I’m proud of the work that they did,” he said. “They jumped on this, and they did exactly what they needed.”

Suspect In Putnam County Triple Homicide Arrested

Less than 24 hours after three men were found dead in a vacant Putnam County home, authorities arrested a suspect in the triple homicide.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, 28-year-old Duane Demaris Crittendon II was arrested Sunday morning and charged with multiple counts of murder.

Saturday morning, the bodies of Jerome Anthony Henry, 48, Richard David Smith and Robert Erwin Ford, both 50, were found in the 100 block of Carver Street.

According to sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Keith Riddick, the men’s bodies were found inside a building that had been licensed as a neighborhood tavern but was closed down several years ago.

In recent years, the building, which is in a residential neighborhood just outside Palatka, was used as a late-night hangout where people gathered to play pool on the lone pool table inside or play cards or talk, Riddick said.

The three victims were killed, and then robbed, while apparently playing in a “high stakes” card game, according to the sheriff’s office.
Putnam County triple homicide victims

A statement released by the sheriff’s office stated that an investigation into the slayings led to witness testimony and physical evidence, which deputies said links Crittenden to the crimes.

Crittenden was taken into custody shortly before 5:30 a.m. in a joint effort of Marion County and Putnam County authorities.

“Once we tracked him to Marion County, we talked to the sheriff there and he activated his detectives and his SWAT team. We located a hotel, where the suspect was located. We went there and he was not there at the time. We had a dozen of our detectives down there. They had a lot of their detectives out and stayed on it. We received more tips. About 5:20 this morning we started walking the streets of Ocala and he was picked up … and placed under arrested,” said Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Dean Kelly.

The suspect was found walking in the 2200 block of South Pine Avenue in Ocala and was arrested without incident.

Crittenden is charged with three counts of first-degree murder.

Memphis School Board member Kenneth Whalum Jr. said this morning that Memphis City Schools should be shut down if the safety of students cannot be assured.

Whalum Jr. was reacting to the recent shootings inside Memphis City Schools. Whalum blasted fellow school board members and the interim superintendent for not taking the situation seriously and not reacting fast enough. Whalum Jr. was not at a press conference last night at the school board because he said, “I do not stand with them.”

Whalum went as far as to call for the closure of Memphis schools, “Unless and until Memphis City Schools can assure students, parents, teachers and voters that their children are safe in Memphis City Schools. Unless and until we can provide that assurance, Memphis City School system needs to be shut down.”

Whalum Jr. said he suggested this to interim Superintendent Dan Ward but Ward said it wasn’t possible and it would scare people.

Whalum Jr. said he has asked the mayor to declare some type of mayoral emergency.

Mayor Herenton has called a press conference for 2 p.m.

Suspected School Shooter Faces Judge

17 year old Cornelius Cheers will remain locked up at Juvenile Court for at least two weeks. Facing the attempted murder of 19 year old Stacey Kiser at Mitchell High yesterday, Cheers will sit and wait on the state to make it’s case.

“No comment right now. Not right now, maybe later,” said the accused teen’s father.

But later is when Cheers might have to answer to even tougher charges. Prosecutors say they will most likely push to try the 17 year old as an adult. They plan to argue his buying a gun from an alleged dealer at this South Memphis apartment complex, walking up to his victim in a crowded cafeteria and shooting him three times at close range is a very adult crime; it deserves adult time.

“He should stay locked up,” said Kiser’s brother Adrianne.

Stacey’s younger brother says he is getting better but still can’t speak because one of the shots hit him near the back of his head. A long recovery ahead, but a recovery his family knows they are lucky to have.

“I thought he wasn’t going to make it.”

Cheers’ next court appearence will be February 27th.

Meanwhile, ATF agents are investigating just who Cheers bought the gun from and where.

A District of Columbia woman accused of killing her four daughters called her oldest girl “Jezebel,” a detective testified Monday at a hearing in which a judge ruled that the case against the mother can proceed.

District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Frederick H. Weisberg ordered that Banita Jacks, 33, remain held on murder charges while a grand jury investigates. He set another hearing for April 4.

D.C. police detective Mitchell A. Credle testified that Jacks told investigators that she did not want Brittany Jacks, 16, to be a bad influence on her other children.

U.S. marshals found the decomposing bodies of the girls in Jacks’ southeast Washington rowhouse while serving an eviction notice on Jan. 9. Authorities have said the girls died at least 15 days earlier.

Although autopsies are still incomplete, authorities have said that there was evidence that Brittany had been stabbed. There was evidence of binding on the necks of the Tatianna Jacks, 11, and N’Kiah Fogle, 6, and evidence of blunt force injury to the head of Aja Fogle, 5, and binding on her neck, authorities said.

Credle testified that Jacks told investigators she had two physical fights with Brittany and called the girl “Jezebel,” a reference to an evil character from the Bible. He said Jacks also told police the girls were possessed by demons, which she wanted to remove.

The detective said Jacks’ home was mostly empty, lacking food, clothing and furniture. He also said neighbors reported that Jacks and her children were seen in May removing furniture that Jacks said was covered with ants.

Shortly after the girls were found, six social workers were fired for failing to properly address alarming complaints about Jacks’ care for her daughters. The employees included front-line workers and a division director.

A union representing child welfare workers protested the firings and filed an appeal on behalf of three workers who are union members.

Bethel AME Church has more than 17,000 registered members. When asked how they felt about sex abuse charges filed against one of their own, Eyewitness News got “no comment” from everyone.

The congregation’s 31-year-old music director, Timothy Price of Owings Mills, is charged with second-degree rape, assault, child abuse and multiple sex offenses.

Investigators say Price admitted to having sex with a 12-year-old parishioner on at least three occasions–twice in a parking lot near Druid Hill Park and once in a West Baltimore alley.

“The suspect in this case works with many children. From what we understand, he is a musician of the church, so therefore, they had plenty of access well before any of the incidents ever took place,” Donny Moses, Baltimore City Police spokesperson, said.

Eyewitness News has learned the girl kept a journal and, after the last incident, told her mother what was going on.

Charging documents explain those incidents in graphic detail, saying the two began communicating through text messages and via cell phone last June.

Pastor Frank Reid says the entire congregation is praying for the victim, as well as Price. Price, who is married with a one-year-old daughter, will appear in court March 4.

Price has been held on $1 million bail at Baltimore’s Central Booking since his arrest on Wednesday.

A Putnam County deputy was in the right place at the right time last weekend when he spotted a man stabbing his ex-girlfriend.

Investigators said Deputy Terry Byers was on patrol when he spotted an altercation in front of a nightclub on Miller Road at about 9:30 p.m.

The officer said at first he thought Jessie Mack, 24, was punching someone.

“Our deputy happened to be riding by and looks over and sees Jessie. It appears to him at the time that he’s striking Chevon — just hitting her,” said Major Keith Riddick.

However, police said what looked like punches were actually thrusts by Mack with a knife.

Chevon Brown, 21, was stabbed several times before the deputy scared Mack away.

“She’s very lucky. Even with the deputies being there, thank the Lord there were enough people around, friends, family, whatever, plus the fact the deputy was in the area to give assistance to her,” Riddick said.

Police said Mack took off running through a nearby parking lot and was eventually caught outside of a nearby business.

Investigators said they found the knife used in the stabbing near a parking lot.

Mack was arrested and charged with attempted murder and resisting an officer without violence.

The victim was in critical condition when she was airlifted to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center Saturday night. On Monday, Brown remained hospitalized but was in stable condition.

According to a police report, a “lovers’ quarrel” almost left the young woman dead. Police said it might have been a homicide if Byers had not been driving nearby.

“Apparently, they had been arguing on and off for the past week to 10 days. This is the second time he has tried to harm her. One of those cases is being worked on by the Flagler Police Department where he tried to run over her,” said Riddick.

Three Soweto schoolboys were arrested yesterday in connection with the rape and murder of a 44-year-old woman on Youth Day last year.

The police in Jabulani arrested the boys, aged between 16 and 18, at their different schools – Goudveld Senior Secondary School in Langlaagte, Johannesburg, Letare High School and Jabulani Technical College.

The half-naked body of Ntombikayise Mwelase was discovered by her friend Phumla Zulu, 41, on June 17. Mwelase, who was separated from her husband, lived alone at the time.

Police said Mwelase had been raped and then strangled.

Inspector Kay Makhubela said that following the police investigation, a 17-year-old youth was eventually linked to Mwelase’s case through fingerprints.

The 17-year-old has a pending case of housebreaking and theft in Meadowlands, police said.

A warrant for his arrest was issued after he failed to appear in court on several occasions. Makhubela said police swooped on the 17-year-old’s school after he had initially resisted attempts by his parents to hand him over.

“The parents informed us where his school was and when we got there he told us who he was with on the day of the murder. He said he only raped the woman but did not kill her,” Makhubela said.

The youths are expected to appear in the Protea magistrate’s court today.

Police: 8-year-old discovered murdered mother’s body

Police said they were searching Wednesday for 37-year-old Vernon McNeil, a registered sex offender who was the mother’s boyfriend.

UPDATE: Ape-Man Arrested For Millington Woman’s Murder

Memphis Police have arrested a man in connection with the death of a 36 year-old Millington woman. Her body was found on the floor in her home Wednesday by her eight year-old daughter.

Vernon Keith McNeil was arrested Friday, January 25 at an apartment in Covington. Investigators say he was hiding in the closet of a woman’s home; police are not yet sure who she is or how she may be involved.

Police plan to file charges over bullets found in house

It was around 5 a.m. and Charles Sherman was asleep in his small one-room apartment. Suddenly, he heard a crash and a small grenade-like device fell from the broken window onto his bed below.

“All of the sudden, it explodes,” Sherman said.

Inside his house on Third Street, burn holes and char marks now stain his mattress. His pillow is burnt. His body looks much the same. Second- and third-degree burns cover much of his stomach and groin area. Burns took the skin off of his left forearm. The hairs on the left side of his goatee are shorter, also burned. He can hardly walk. Friends have to help him stand.

Sherman, 42, claims he was attacked in his sleep — but not by robbers or thugs. In the early morning hours of Jan. 16, a SWAT team of deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department broke a window right above Sherman’s bed and hurled a flash bang diversion device into his house. The SWAT team hoped to find evidence relating to recent attempted murder on Pallesi Street under investigation by the Barstow Police Department.

Now suffering from burns, Sherman said he intends file formal complaints and sue over the injuries. He has not done so, he said, because the burns have limited his ability to walk and move around.

“Of course I’m going to sue,” he said. “I’m not going to play with this.”

The flash bang device, much like a grenade, makes a loud noise and emits a bright flash to distract people while officers enter a residence, Lt. Albert Ramirez of the Barstow Police Department said.

“It’s a diversion,” Ramirez said. “We want to distract their mind and eyes to something other than us.”

After the device went off, Sherman said he was dragged out onto his front porch, kicked and beaten by the SWAT team while still burning. He said they performed a rectal search for drugs, stepped on his neck and called him a “n—–” repeatedly. Neighbors Jeff and Melissa Nearen, who have known Sherman for about six months, heard the commotion and came out of their house. Jeff Nearen said he thought it was unnecessary to search the house of man who is on disability and blind in one eye.

Albany Pastor arrested for burning church

An Albany Church Pastor is arrested Friday, and charged with having his own church burned.

45 year old Dr. Joseph Howard is charged with first degree arson. He is being held in the Dougherty County Jail without bond, along with 46 year old Curtis Jones. Investigators say Howard hired Jones to set the fire in the South Albany church.

Arson Investigators say the burning of the Metropolitan Baptist Church on December 31st was not a hate crime, but a crime for money. They charge that Reverend Howard had his church torched to collect the insurance money.

Formerly known as Trinity Baptist, Metropolitan Baptist Church on West Gordon Avenue was vandalized and set on fire. Furniture was found turned over in the church and school offices, but only the sanctuary was burned.

Investigators charge that Reverend Howard sat down with 46 year old Curtis Jones and planned the arson, to make sure the entire church building burned. But the fire department put out the fire in the sanctuary.

Witnesses saw men leaving the area that morning, giving Investigators clues that lead them to make these arrests. Howard told WALB News Ten that he thought the fire was a hate crime, but Investigators say it was for the insurance money. The Metropolitan Baptist Church was being foreclosed on for missing payments to two mortgages, and church property was scheduled to be sold on the courthouse steps that week.

The Church and Reverend Howard were using federal grants to build low cost housing in a very controversial project in that neighborhood. Investigators say they continue to look into allegations that some of that money was misappropriated.

Big Reward Leads to Jig Arrests

BRUNSWICK, GA — Crime Stoppers’ new, $5,000 Reward has helped police find two more wanted men in Georgia.

Detectives in Brunswick arrested 19-year-old Bernard Robinson on murder charges. He’s accused of shooting and killing a man outside the Salvation Army office last month.

Police also arrested 24-year-old Marlon Cobb. Cobb is accused of shooting a man in the back of the head.

Both men were caught in the same home.

The Mayor of Brunswick recently made the decision to offer $5,000 rewards for information about murder suspects. The reward used to be $1,000.

Arrest Made In Weekend Murder

Tulsa Police have arrested a teenager in connection with Sunday’s deadly downtown nightclub shooting. The suspect, 18-year-old Durayco Fox now faces a first degree murder charge. News On 6 anchor Omar Villafranca reports investigators believe the shooting may have been gang related.

The scene last week outside of Club UV at Second and Greenwood had Tulsa police swarming the location and club-goers running for safety. Officers say a man walked up to 21-year-old Eric Bell at the club, pointed a gun and shot and killed him.

“The victim also had some gang associations and a feud had continued between these groups and this was the end result,” said Tulsa Police Sgt. Mike Huff.

Officers arrested Durayco Fox Thursday afternoon. The 18-year-old was booked on a first degree murder complaint. Court documents show Fox had a run-in with police less than a week before the deadly shooting.

“Christmas Day, he had an arrest for burglary. Charges were not filed and he was able to get out,” said Tulsa Police Sgt. Mike Huff.

Officers served a search warrant on Fox, but are tight lipped on what they found. Huff says Club UV’s owners aren’t cooperating with the investigation, but he hopes things will change.

“We’re hoping for more cooperation from them, and from people at the scene,” said Tulsa Police Sgt. Mike Huff.

Cumberland County sheriff’s detectives have charged a woman in the death of a Spring Lake man who was found lying in his front yard.

Beverly Ann Black, 45, of 121 Bogart St., was arrested Sunday night. She was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Terrance Anthony Brockington, 42, of 103 N. Mitchely St.

He was on the front lawn of his residence at around 8 p.m. Sunday and had been stabbed, authorities said. Investigators say a dispute between the pair led to the crime.

Brockington was transported by ambulance to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he later died. An autopsy will be conducted by the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Chapel Hill to determine the exact cause of death.

Black was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond. She was expected to make a first court appearance Monday.

I’d estimate at that time, Chrysler topped 40-45% nigger employment. With the slowing of the economy, something finally did break. After watching their profits plunge and after spending two, three, four thousand dollars per vehicle in insurance for niggers to lay-up with back injuries, the Big 3 started laying the nigs off and shipping the jobs to India. I hated to see it but at the same time, the Big 3 in essence, was just telling the niggers to F off and to find another titty to suck.

But it’s not just health insurance that hurts the Big 3. A person would be shocked to understand the injuries in an auto assemble plant. With niggers on the loose in ever crevice of the plant, stoned, drunk and/or just stupid, running people down in the isles with fork lifts, stacking stock to where it falls because it wasn’t balanced correctly or was stacked too high. Nigger drunken, drug induced brawls in the parking lot at lunch time that resulted in ambulances and police being called with niggers being arrested, sent to the hospital or too high to return to work. All this results in either down time or being forced to hire extra niggers to be on hand to replace the niggers that were arrested or sent to the hospital. The extra security guards to try and prevent such acts has to be enormous. Security guards being hired by the hundreds to keep the plant safe and secure. Of course with more and more niggers being hired, there were more and more nigger security guards, which in turn leads to more and more security guards hired to watch the affirmative action security nigger guards. It’s just totally insane and who pays for it? Whoever buys a way over-priced American made vehicle. This is not even considering the hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stereos, leather steering wheels, engines, transmissions etc etc etc that come up missing because of nigger thievery. Each item stolen, has to be added to the price of the vehicle. Like I stated, it’s just insane. But, that’s what happens when a ZOG government dictates who private businesses must hire.

I coined another phrase as I was making my exit out of the nigger jungle car manufacturing business, because of my union roots and my love for America, I try to buy American every chance I get, but still, there’s logic to this statement . . . . What would you rather own, a car made in Japan and built by Japanese or a car made in America and built by niggers?

JaMorris Brandon Walker, 18, was arrested Tuesday for the murder of 18-year-old Zeric Harrison. Harrison was killed last weekend.

Walker was taken to Orlando police headquarters and being charged with first-degree murder.

Orlando police arrested a man who was spotted trying to steal from a city fire station early Wednesday.

A witness spotted a man inside the building on South Westmoreland Avenue at about 2 a.m. A police officer later found Larry G. Shingles, who matched the suspect’s description, in the area.

The officer had to chase Shingles down on foot to arrest him. He was taken to Orange County Jail, under charges of burglary and resisting arrest without violence.

Man Arrested after Setting Fire to Apartments

Early Saturday morning, Charlotte Fire Department responded to an apartment complex on West 26th Street after two fires were intentionally set. No residents were hurt in the fire.

Police arrested James Otis Gladden at the scene of the fire and charged him with fire degree arson, malicious use of explosive damage property and misuse of the 911 system.

His bail was set at $55,000.

A transient who robbed another man after asking him for a cigarette was arrested in front of the Central Florida Coalition for the Homeless shelter early Wednesday.

Orlando police said that Weston Jackson asked a 46-year-old man for the smoke in the 900 block of West Central Boulevard, but then snatched money from his hand and fled.

Police later found Jackson, 42, in front of the homeless shelter.

Jackson was taken to Orange County Jail, under one charge of robbery.

Orlando police, dispatched to a burglary at an occupied home, caught the thief walking down the street carrying his haul Tuesday night.

Officers were on their way to the reported crime at 621 W. South St. when they spotted a man toting a TV near Terry and Anderson streets.

Police arrested 50-year-old Johnny Howard on the spot.

He remained in Orange County Jail on Wednesday, on a charge of attempted burglary.

Woman Charged With Child Abuse, Neglect

The godmother of an 8-year-old boy who Orange County sheriff’s deputies said was killed last month by his 13-year-old brother for eating a forbidden dessert was arrested in connection to the case.

Sandra Annette Blackmon, the godmother of Lavares Key, was charged with child abuse and neglect after officials said she abused him prior to his death.

Lavares died Sept. 29 after being beaten by his brother, Demetrius Key, officials said. Demetruis was charged earlier this month with first-degree murder in his brother’s death.

Detectives said Demetrius admitted to punching, kicking, choking and repeatedly banging Lavares’ head against the floor because Lavares ate a dessert he wasn’t supposed to and picked a scab until it bled.

The alleged beating took place at the boys’ Orange County apartment, and Lavares died days after the incident.

Tangela Key, 34, the mother of the boys, was charged with aggravated child neglect in the incident.

Tangela, a single mother of seven children who is pregnant, told investigators that Demetrius was baby-sitting his siblings while she visited a cousin at a nearby apartment, according to officials.

Investigators said Tangela Key knowingly put Lavares in a life-threatening situation.

LA man pleads not guilty in shooting death of pregnant girlfriend

LOS ANGELES—A man accused of shooting and killing his pregnant girlfriend while she was driving him and her two children pleaded not guilty Wednesday to two counts of murder.

Stephen Mark Picart, 33, is charged in the Sept. 23 death of Sharon Carter and the unborn baby believed to be his child. He also faces the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, but prosecutors have not decided whether they’ll seek the death penalty in the case.

Carter, 31, was shot in the back of the head as she was driving her sports utility vehicle in Watts. Authorities said they believe Picart was in the vehicle and arguing with his girlfriend before the shooting.

After she was shot, Carter’s SUV hit two cars and came to a stop. Her sons, ages 4 and 14, were not injured.

DETROIT — Two adults and two children were fatally shot as they slept Thursday in a home known for drug activity, renewing pleas for community members to take more responsibility in the fight against violence.

Police were questioning someone found with the adult male victim’s vehicle, which they think the shooter took, Sgt. Eren Stephens Bell said. Police did not discuss a possible motive.

Officers found no signs of forced entry after getting the call around 3:30 a.m., and the doors and windows of the two-story brick bungalow were reinforced with two-by-fours and locks, Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings said. The bodies of the children were found in one room, police said, while the bodies of the adults were in another.

Police have responded to the house in the past on reports of shots fired and narcotics complaints, Bully-Cummings said. A gun was not found at the scene, but casings from a high-powered weapon were recovered, she said.

“I’m tired of seeing our children die,” the chief said. “We as adults have a responsibility to our children to allow them to grow up as adults in a safe environment, and we’re failing them.”

Pandora Eppinger said her niece, 9-year-old Alexus Eppinger, and nephew, 5-year-old Terrence Eppinger Jr., were killed.

“It’s scary out here. You can’t go out anywhere and feel safe,” Eppinger said.

“They were just little, sweet kids,” she said. “Why would they do that?”

The children’s mother, Lynnette Lawson, 28, and Jason Davis, 34, also died, according to the Wayne County medical examiner’s office and relatives who gathered in the morning rain near the home. The boy died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen, and the others were shot multiple times at close range, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Georgia Davis, 53, said her son, Jason, had been dating Lawson recently.

“Why would someone kill those kids?” she said. “They’re crazy.”

Bully-Cummings, speaking to reporters on the street just hours after the shootings, reiterated a plea for Detroiters to take responsibility for the community, one she has made repeatedly since taking the job in 2003.

In 2004, she and other officials joined a coalition of ministers in prayer as they called on residents to join them in ending a culture of violence in the city. But the killings have continued.

The four were killed a day after a man and woman were convicted of murdering two boys who were shot in a ransacked Detroit apartment in February. Authorities say they planned to kidnap the boys’ cousin and rob him of cocaine and cash.

Three additional suspects are awaiting trial. A sixth suspect pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

In September, police said four people were killed in a shooting at a home where a large amount of illegal drugs were found. The county prosecutor’s office said a man is facing four murder charges.

Deondrey Peterson, 33, lives near the scene of Thursday’s killings and said he wants to move out of Detroit because of such violence.

“It’s ridiculous. It’s senseless,” Peterson said. “My main concern is the kids. … How are we going to have a future?”

Just one week after community activist James Slater was shot to death, police investigators have made two arrests.

Darnell Norton, 18, has been arrested and charged in the case. Earlier in the day, Henry Cox, 19, was charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting.

Slater, 46, was walking home from a neighborhood meeting when he was robbed and shot.

According to a family friend, Police Chief David Moore himself went to the Slater family home to tell them about the arrests.

Police said Cox, 19, and another person approached Slater as he walked home from a neighborhood meeting. They stole two cell phones, an iPod, and some money before shooting him.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier and Mayor Adrian Fenty kicked off the new foot patrol program yesterday. It goes into effect today bringing over 200 police officers to the streets. This is exactly what neighbors call for at every community meeting.

Boy’s Brother Charged With 1st-Degree Murder

The mother of an 8-year-old Orange County boy who was allegedly beaten to death by his 13-year-old brother was arrested Thursday on aggravated child neglect charges.

Tangela Key, 34, was arrested in connection to the death of her son, Levares Key, who died over the weekend.

Demetrius Key was charged with first-degree murder in Levares’ death on Wednesday.

Investigators said Demetrius admitted to beating, kicking, choking and repeatedly banging Levares’ head against the floor while baby-sitting him and other siblings because Levares ate a dessert he was not supposed to and picked a scab until it bled.

Tangela Key was charged because she left Lavares with Demetrius and knew that Demetrius was capable of inflicting harm upon his brother, investigators said.

Lavares was beaten numerous times prior to his death, according to investigators.

“We have also learned that (Tangela Key) participated in — and actually directed her other children to participate in — discipline sessions with Lavares where Demetrius would hold Lavares’ legs and another sibling would hold his arms and she would beat him while the other two children held him,” Orange County Sheriff’s Sgt. John Allen said.

Investigators told Local 6 News that more charges will likely be filed against Tangela Key.
