Picture Shows Gunman Before Shooting, Police Say

1 Wounded In Barrage Of Gunfire On Indy’s East Side

Police have released a picture of a person they believe was involved in an outdoor shooting that left a man with a gunshot wound Tuesday on the city’s east side.

Authorities say they’re looking for the pictured male, saying he and perhaps others were involved in a barrage of gunfire during which Matthew Pittman, 23, was wounded.

A witness told police about 18 to 20 shots were fired at about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 2900 block of East 18th Street. It wasn’t clear how many people were involved.

Police went to the scene but didn’t find anyone shot. About 10 minutes later, police learned that Pittman was at Methodist Hospital, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Pittman told police he was driving a van on 18th Street when someone shot him. Police said the van is damaged but that the damage isn’t consistent with Pittman’s account of how he was shot.

Police obtained a picture of a male holding a rifle, and a witness told police that the picture was taken shortly before the shooting began. Police didn’t say who took that picture.

Authorities said the pictured weapon is a .223-caliber semiautomatic rifle, which fires bullets. Police said Pittman was wounded not by a bullet, but by shotgun ammunition.

Police said they found several .223-caliber shell casings at the shooting scene. At least one other vehicle was damaged by a stray bullet, police said.

Officials asked anyone with information about the person in the picture or the shooting to call them at 317-327-3733.

Niggerfuxxed Cleveland, OH - The apeman who threw acid on a sow on an RTA bus pleaded guilty this afternoon.

Eric Warren admitted to walking up to Synethia May and throwing a cup of sulfuric acid on her last July.

He pleaded guilty to attempted murder and felonious assault in court.

Police tell 19 Action News Warren didn’t know May and never said a word during the senseless attack. Eben tho aye ain’t know da ho, here tha acid go - yo.

May is still showing scars from the attack and can barely see out of one eye.

Warren will be sentenced on April 10th.

A Cuyahoga County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a 22-year-old suspect early Tuesday morning.

Officials said the Major Investigations Unit, a joint task force between Cleveland police and the sheriff’s department, were involved in an undercover drug buy on St. Clair Avenue in Cleveland at about 12:45 a.m.

Police said they had an informant there to meet with Lawrence White in a deal to buy $3,000 worth of Ecstasy. While the informant and the suspect were talking, White decided to rob the informant of the money, officials said.

That’s when officers tried to intervene. The suspect took off down St. Clair Avenue to Whitcomb, where they said the man fell over a snow mound and opened fire on officers. The deputy returned fire, hitting the suspect, they said.

He was taken to a Huron Road Hospital, where he later died.

White was on active parole from an aggravated robbery conviction in 2004. He had a long history of incarceration as an adult and juvenile.

Police said the incident was caught on an audio tape.

“This man was seen with the girl near to where her dead body was found.

“It was evidently clear this man was raping her,” he said.

“We have sufficient evidence to show this man was having sex with the girl in the early hours of February 18.

Charges against a California University student accused of shooting another student at a bar in May have been dropped.

Vikram Yamba, 22, of Churchill, was accused of shooting another student in the leg with a small pistol following an argument inside P.J. McMonagle’s Bar on Union Street.

Yamba was charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault in the case.

The District Attorney’s Officer, since the shooting, asked for as many as six continuances for Yamba on the charges.

The district justice said he had no other choice but to drop the charges on Wednesday after the district attorney showed up without the victim, witnesses or subpoenas.

According to the district justice, after six months, if the ADA has not presented any witnesses or at least subpoena witnesses, charges can be dismissed.

Yamba remains in jail on federal counterfeiting charges.

Woman delivers baby while hanging from tree

A pregnant Papua New Guinea woman hung from a tree after being accused of sorcery gave birth to her baby while struggling to free herself, local media reports.

Nolan Yekum and her husband Paul were dragged from their house and hung from a tree by fellow tribesmen who accused them of sorcery after the couple’s neighbour suddenly died.

Their ordeal occurred in Kilip village near Banz in Western Highlands Province, PNG’s newspaper The National reported today.

The woman and her newborn baby girl, her third child, were doing well in Mt Hagen Hospital after two weeks in hiding, the report said.

Her husband said men entered their house in the middle of the night with a rope and tied it to their necks, accusing them of sorcery over their neighbour’s death.

They were dragged outside and hung from a tree, he said.

“We managed to loosen the noose to get our feet on the ground … we were able to free ourselves.

“My wife, who was about seven months pregnant, delivered the baby while struggling to free herself.

“It was a painful experience for me and her,” Yekum said.

He said he pleaded with fellow villagers to wait for his neighbour’s post-mortem and he accused local police of failing to act.

The couple vehemently denied practising sorcery.

Boise Police say a 16-year-old was driving drunk with the teen’s own mother in the car.

Officers tried to pull over a 1992 Nissan Maxima Saturday evening after they noticed the car was speeding and swerving in the area of ParkCenter and Apple Street.

After nearly a quarter mile, they finally pulled the car over. Inside, police found the 16-year-old driver - who they say was intoxicated. The driver’s mother was in the front passenger seat, according to police.

That woman - Emmaliza Casarez, 36, is charged with injury to children, and another charge related to encouraging the incident.

Both Caszrez and the 16-year-old have prior charges of driving under the influence - neither has a valid driver’s license. The teen now faces a new charge of DUI.

Two other juveniles and a 22-year-old male were also in the car at the time of the arrest.

More charges could be filed against Casarez in connection with the incident.

Police: Man Sends Judge $100, Accused Of Bribery

A 60-year-old man spent Thursday night in the Duval County jail accused of bribery after a judge said he received a note from him with a $100 bill enclosed.

According to the arrest report, Warren Robinson arrived at a hearing on a domestic violence charge before Judge Charles Cofer and handed the judge’s assistant an envelope containing the cash and a note that said: “Please accept this little token of gratitude and appreciation towards me. P.S. Take your wife out to dinner on me on Valentine’s Day.”

In the three-page letter, Robinson asking Cofer to dismiss the case. Instead, he was arrested and charged with bribery.

At Robinson’s first-appearance hearing on the bribery charge Friday morning, Cofer asked the prosecutor: “How much favoritism did he reasonably feel he’d receive for only $100?”

After hearing chuckles in the courtroom, the judge added: “Was this more an inappropriate gesture than bribery?”

Robinson was released on his own recognizance on the condition he has no contact with the judge or his assistant. He was due to return to court for an arraignment on March 6.

Deputies Dump Quadriplegic Man Out Of Chair

Four Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies have been suspended after purposely tipping a quadriplegic man out of his wheelchair at a jail, authorities said Tuesday.

Orient Road Jail surveillance footage from Jan. 29 shows veteran deputy Charlette Marshall-Jones, 44, dumping Brian Sterner out of his wheelchair and searching him on the floor after he was brought in on a warrant after a traffic violation.

“This deputy, she looked at me and didn’t believe I was a quadriplegic, I guess,” Sterner said. “And, she walked behind me with those handles on the back of the hospital-grade wheelchair and just dumped it straight forward.”

Sterner broke his neck almost 14 years ago, Local 6 reported.

Sterner said when he was taken into a booking room and told to stand up, Jones grew agitated when he told her that he could not.

“She was irked that I wasn’t complying to what she was telling me to do,” he told The Tampa Tribune. “It didn’t register with her that she was asking me to do something I can’t do.”

Jones has been suspended without pay, and Sgt. Gary Hinson, 51, Cpl. Steven Dickey, 45 and Cpl. Decondra Williams, 36 have also been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

“The actions are indefensible at every level,” Chief Deputy Jose Docobo said. “Based on what I saw, anything short of dismissal would be inappropriate.”

He said the officers’ actions were an aberration.

A woman who answered Jones’ telephone said Jones was unavailable. A message left at a telephone number listed for a Steven Dickey in Tampa was not immediately returned Tuesday night.

Listings for Hinson and Williams could not be located.

“That none of the supervisors acted upon what they saw is of great concern,” Docobo said. “This is not the norm at the sheriff’s office.”

Sterner was arrested at his Riverview home and taken to the jail Jan. 29 on a charge of fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer, according to records. He posted $2,000 bond and was released Feb 3.

A warrant for Sterner’s arrest was issued after an Oct. 25 incident, in which Tampa police stopped him in Ybor City. He was stopped while driving a Mini Cooper that had been fitted with hand pedals and was cited for blocking an intersection.

“My client was stopped that night and was given a traffic citation, so how could he be fleeing and eluding?” Sterner’s lawyer John Trevena said. “We’re very skeptical about the basis for the charge itself.”

Trevena said he hopes authorities investigate the deputies for criminal charges. He said he was “mortified” when he watched the footage.

“I couldn’t believe that a detention deputy would be so callous toward an individual, whether they were disabled or not,” he said.

On Sterner’s MySpace page, the 32-year-old cites interests that include wheelchair rugby, yoga, art shows and documentaries.

‘Romeo’ sentenced to eight years

Ernest Baker may seem like a modern-day Romeo, wooing women with candy, cars and promises of life-long love.

But under his slick veneer, prosecutors say, he’s a common con man.

The 45-year-old Indian Hill husband and father promised women he met through an Internet matchmaking service that he loved them, would support them and spend the rest of his life with them.

Once they fell under his spell, Baker walked off with their life savings, Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor Andy Berghausen said.

“He betrayed the women’s trust and stole their money and that’s what he was convicted of,” Berghausen said. “He took their belief systems away from them, their trust away from them.”

Baker walked away with $143,983 before he was caught in early 2007.

Berghausen said Baker used the money to support his family, buying cars for at least two of his children.

Retired Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Richard Niehaus, who presided over the three-week jury trial, sentenced Baker on Monday to eight years in prison on three charges of theft and one charge each of theft of a motor vehicle, forgery, passing bad checks and tampering with records.

The judge grew angry when Baker, who wore a stylish suit to his sentencing, tried to blame his victims.

“While I was listening to your mitigation I felt as though I was Alice asked to step through the looking glass,” Niehaus said referring to “Alice in Wonderland.”

“Now, let’s step back out and take a look in the mirror.

“You took these people, you took everything from them,” Niehaus said. “You destroyed them every way you could, financially, psychologically and emotionally.”

Berghausen said the scams all started at about the same time in May 2006.

Baker, who has a history of theft and fraud dating back 20 years and has spent two years in prison, trolled the Internet for his most recent victims, Berghausen said.

He met two of the women on InterracialMatcher.com.

Baker stole $30,000 from a Florida woman he met on the dating Web site, convincing her to move to Liberty Township. Once here, he took another $50,000, Berghausen said.

Meanwhile, he scammed a female friend out of $20,000 under the guise that the money was a loan, Berghausen said.

Baker also met a Canadian woman through the Web site.

While no theft charge relates directly to her, she was the recipient of a BMW convertible that Baker defrauded out of a local BMW dealership. He bought the car with a bad check, then falsified records to get a copy of the title from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Berghausen said.

Baker wrote a $1,067 bad check to a Blue Ash florist for flowers, stuffed animals and chocolates to fill the car.

He then drove to the border, where he gave the car to the woman. Then he borrowed a lot of money from the woman.

“The women are devastated,” Berghausen said. “It’s a trust factor; he betrayed everything they believed in.”

The one woman still standing behind Baker? His wife, Debra Baker.

She spoke on his behalf Monday. “I love him very much, he is my best friend. He is a loving and courageous man. He has always been generous and willing to help others.”

East Timor Declares Emergency After Attack on Leaders

SYDNEY, Australia — The East Timorese government has declared a state of emergency after Monday’s assassination attempts on the country’s president and prime minister, and Australia is reinforcing its peacekeeping presence in the country to counter the destabilizing effects of the attacks.

President José Ramos-Horta, who was shot at least twice, was in serious but stable condition in an Australian hospital after being operated on for three hours Monday night, a hospital spokesman said Tuesday morning.

“He has a very good chance of a very good recovery, but by the same token, the injuries sustained initially were very serious and shouldn’t in any way be underestimated,” the general manager of the Royal Darwin Hospital, Dr. Len Notaras, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

He said Mr. Ramos-Horta had been shot in the stomach and back and that he had required a transfusion of more than 16 pints of blood to stabilize his condition before he was flown to Australia.

Police in Springfield are looking for a gunman involved in a triple shooting overnight at a birthday party.

Around 1:00 Saturday morning police said a fight broke out at a home just off South Main Street. Someone reportedly pulled out a gun and started shooting. Police said three people were hit by the gunfire. Luckily, all three are expected to be alright.

The suspect is Felix Coleman, 30. He’s about six-foot-two and 240 pounds. He has braided hair and his front teeth are gold.

Local Drug Kingpin Arrested In Mexico

(Memphis 1/14/2008) The U.S. Marshals Office has confirmed suspected drug kingpin Craig Petties was captured in Mexico.

Petties was on the U.S. Marshals 15 Most Wanted List, and for good reason. The U.S. Marshals Office says Petties made a lot of money distributing more than over a thousand kilos of cocaine in cities such as Memphis and Atlanta.

We’re told Petties lived a lavish lifestyle. Authorities have already seized two of his houses, worth more than a million dollars, and twenty luxury vehicles that he owned.

An indictment says Petties spent drug money to buy a $111,000 Mercedes and a Bentley worth more than $300,000.

It’s been long suspected Petties may be hiding out in Mexico and that is exactly where he was arrested.

“We would love to get this guy off the streets. With his resources he could be anywhere and he is a danger to the community, ” said Robert J. Finan II, Assistant Director of the U.S. Marshals Investigative Services Division in 2004.

The Marshals Service hoped Petties luck would run out once they put him on the most wanted list. It may have taken some time, but he’s now behind bars.

Maid Arrested In Germantown Home Invasion

(Germantown, TN 1/16/2008) A maid has been arrested in connection with a home invasion in Germantown last Friday morning .

Police say Carra Latrease Abston, is the person who planned and helped in the home invasion of her employer. The home invasion happened in the 2600 block of Park Creek Drive. Police arrested Abston Wednesday morning at her Memphis home.

Abston is charged with aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery and is being held on a $200,000 bond.

Lee Covey is an Inspector for the Germantown police, “Abston cleaned house for the victim for more than two years. She’s been a suspect since the start of the investigation. We charged her after discovering the extent of her involvement in the home invasion. She is the link between the victim and the three men who carried out the home invasion. She provided information to the three male suspects and assisted in the robbery.”

A third male suspect is still loose.

Prosecutors have questioned more than two-dozen witnesses in the trial of Tashawana Annette Vanhardenberg, 23, of Copperas Cove, who’s charged with injury to a child by omission in the 2007 death of her 35-month-old son.

Vanhardenberg is on trial in state district court in Gatesville.

Antoine Marshon Shields, 28, and Vanhardenburg were arrested after their son Keynen Jacobe Vanhardenberg died on March 24, 2007 in a local hospital.

Shields pleaded guilty to murder in Gatesville district court earlier this month just as a jury was being seated in his capital murder trial.

Shields also pleaded guilty to injury to a child.

He must serve 30 years in prison before he’s eligible for parole.

Prosecutors were not seeking the death penalty, but he would have faced a life term without parole had he been convicted of capital murder.

Vanhardenberg is charged with failing to protect her son from the man who killed him and with failure to timely seek medical attention for the boy who died one month short of his third birthday.

Vanhardenberg’s attorney says, however, the felony charge against the defendant should be reduced due to circumstances of the death.

School Faces Sanctions For Basket ‘Brawl’

When fans and players collided in a fight during a Palatka High School basketball game, the school responded by punishing players and students. Now, Florida athletic officials are punishing the school.

Palatka High fans were banned from attending the school’s remaining home basketball games after the Jan. 11 on-court melee.

Nine basketball players were suspended in connection to the fight, which remains under investigation.

“When you go to a game, you want to be safe. You don’t want to be caught in a brawl like that,” said Palatka High School parent Deborah Bainbridge.

The Florida High School Athletic Association agrees. It said it believes the school needs to be held responsible for what happened, and sanctions were put in place.

The high school has been fined $1,500 and will receive an official reprimand in its file.

Taunting a Factor in Tiger Attack

Police believe the three people mauled by a tiger yelled and waved at the cat from atop a railing before it lunged at them, but experts say that’s only a notch up from the type of taunting animals regularly endure at the nation’s zoos.

One study concluded that as many as one in four zoo visitors razz the animals in some way, and large predators like tigers are a prime target.

Paul Dhaliwal, one of the two surviving victims, told the father of the teenager killed in the Christmas Day attack that while the three climbed the 3-foot-tall railing and tried to get the tiger’s attention, they never threw or dangled anything into the pen, according to a search warrant affidavit filed late Thursday.

Dhaliwal, 19, was severely injured when the 250-pound Siberian tiger named Tatiana clawed its way up the wall of its enclosure, leapt out and mauled him. His brother, Kulbir, 24, was also injured, and their friend, 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr., was killed.

The tiger “may have been taunted/agitated by its eventual victims,” Inspector Valerie Matthews wrote in the affidavit. Police believe “this factor contributed to the tiger escaping from its enclosure and attacking its victims,” she wrote.

All three victims had marijuana in their systems, and Paul Dhaliwal’s blood alcohol level was 0.16 - twice the legal limit for driving, according to the affidavit.

“Clearly there’s the lesson to be learned here,” said zoo spokesman Sam Singer. “The lesson is that it’s not a good idea to drink, it’s not a good idea to be high on dope, and it’s not a good idea to taunt a man-eating tiger.”

Authorities were weighing whether to seek criminal charges against the Dhaliwals, but their lawyer, Mark Geragos, said they have presented no evidence of a crime. Geragos, who has repeatedly said the brothers didn’t taunt the tiger, also noted that the affidavit does not specify any possible counts.

Albany Pastor arrested for burning church

An Albany Church Pastor is arrested Friday, and charged with having his own church burned.

45 year old Dr. Joseph Howard is charged with first degree arson. He is being held in the Dougherty County Jail without bond, along with 46 year old Curtis Jones. Investigators say Howard hired Jones to set the fire in the South Albany church.

Arson Investigators say the burning of the Metropolitan Baptist Church on December 31st was not a hate crime, but a crime for money. They charge that Reverend Howard had his church torched to collect the insurance money.

Formerly known as Trinity Baptist, Metropolitan Baptist Church on West Gordon Avenue was vandalized and set on fire. Furniture was found turned over in the church and school offices, but only the sanctuary was burned.

Investigators charge that Reverend Howard sat down with 46 year old Curtis Jones and planned the arson, to make sure the entire church building burned. But the fire department put out the fire in the sanctuary.

Witnesses saw men leaving the area that morning, giving Investigators clues that lead them to make these arrests. Howard told WALB News Ten that he thought the fire was a hate crime, but Investigators say it was for the insurance money. The Metropolitan Baptist Church was being foreclosed on for missing payments to two mortgages, and church property was scheduled to be sold on the courthouse steps that week.

The Church and Reverend Howard were using federal grants to build low cost housing in a very controversial project in that neighborhood. Investigators say they continue to look into allegations that some of that money was misappropriated.

Albany Fire Chief James Carswell and State Fire Commissioner John Oxendine said that more arrests in the church arson are expected, and they continue to look into the possibility of other crimes that could be connected to the church and it’s Pastor.

Man Incriminates Himself on YouTube

An Opelousas man demonstrates how to mix illegal drugs and posts it on YouTube.

It wasn’t long before Narcotics Agents in his home town were banging on his door.

The video shows John Sam smoking marijuana and demonstrating to viewers how to make “drink”. Drink is a street name for mixing liquid codeine and Sprite.

In the video the suspect also identified some of his associates who regularly use marijuana. He even said where he lived.

When Agents went to Sam’s residence on Patsy Street Sam allowed them to search his residence. He actually told them that he had a few bags of marijuana in his room.

When agents searched the room they also found a digital scale, empty plastics and an empty bottle of liquid codeine.

Sam told Deputies he was selling bags of marijuana for twenty to forty dollars per bag. When agents showed Sam the videos he was shocked saying “he didn’t think he could get caught that way.”

Robbery Suspect Shoots Self In Genitals

Police said a Kokomo man accidentally shot himself in the genitals while robbing a convenience store early Tuesday.

Kokomo police said they were called to a Village Pantry store at about 4:20 a.m. after a call from a clerk.

The female clerk told police that a man came into the store with a semiautomatic handgun, grabbed her hair and demanded cash and cigarettes before handing her a white cloth bag, WRTV-TV in Indianapolis reported.

The clerk said that as she retrieved the cigarettes, she heard a gunshot and turned to confront the man, who yelled that he had shot himself.

“The bullet traveled through his right testicle … and then into the bottom part of his leg,” Kokomo police Lt. Don Whitehead said.

Police said the man, whom they identified as 25-year-old Derrick Kosch, grabbed the bag full of cash and fled the store.

In-store surveillance cameras showed that Kosch shot himself as he placed the gun into the waistband of his pants, police said.

Shortly after the robbery, dispatchers got a call from someone in a home located several blocks away from the store about a man who was shot.

When officers arrived, they found Kosch. The home belongs to his grandmother, police said.

“He said he had been shot (and) someone was trying to rob him,” said the grandmother, who was not named. “In the meantime, I found out that he was trying to rob somebody else.”

Kosch was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Officers said that while at the home, they found the bag of money that was taken from the convenience store and clothes seen on the robber in the surveillance tape.

Police said Kosch was arrested on robbery and criminal recklessness charges. Police said they were looking for the gun.

Lamont Hunter is sitting on Ohio’s death row for torturing and killing his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son while baby-sitting the toddler in early 2006.

But Trustin Blue’s mother faces charges of her own Monday in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court.

Luzmilda Blue, 31, goes to trial for child endangering.

She is accused of failing to protect her son.

Prosecutors say she knew Hunter abused Trustin when she left him alone with the boy and their infant daughter and went to work the morning of Jan. 19, 2006.

The next time she saw her son, he lay dying on her couch, suffering from multiple injuries, including severe head trauma and anal tears.

“I think she made a choice of herself over her kid,” Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor Seth Tieger said. “In our opinion, she knew Hunter tortured and abused Trustin, and still on the day in question left Trustin in his care.”

Others would have gladly watched the toddler, Tieger said.

A panel of three Hamilton County Common Pleas judges convicted Hunter, 39, of aggravated murder, rape and child endangering. The judges sentenced Hunter to death.

Blue’s lawyer, Barry Levy, did not return a phone call for comment.

“I will never forget the brutality of this case as long as I live,” said Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Ralph “Ted” Winkler at Hunter’s sentencing.

For more than a week, judges heard testimony about the abuse Trustin suffered.

He was abused twice in 2004, with Hamilton County Department of Job and Family Services intervening after the tot turned up with injuries the second time.

In that case, he suffered injuries to his leg and penis while alone with Hunter.

The agency removed Trustin from Blue’s care for a year, but once she took parenting classes and complied with other orders, Trustin was sent home.

Blue has been free on bond since shortly after her arrest the week after Trustin’s death.

As her case has weaved through the criminal system - stalled while waiting for Hunter’s case to move forward first - a Hamilton County Juvenile Court magistrate took her three other children away, placing them with relatives.

Blue retained supervised visitation rights.

Polk dad charged in baby’s death - Officials said the man told them he beat his daughter because he had wanted a son.

Marcos Gomez-Romero told sheriff’s detectives he wanted a son.

Every time he looked at his baby girl, Gomez-Romero said he grew annoyed and angry because she was not the boy he had hoped for.

Gomez-Romero told detectives that abusing his daughter, Ariana Lizeth Rodriguez-Romero, became such a “habit” that he slapped her while she slept.

On Thursday, a Polk County grand jury indicted Gomez-Romero, 28, on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse for Ariana’s death.

A medical examiner found dozens of internal and external injuries on Ariana’s body. The infant had five new fractures on her ribs and more than a dozen old fractures. There was a hematoma and a cut on her spleen. Her liver was bruised, as was her jaw.

When questioned by a Polk County sheriff’s detective the day after Ariana died, Gomez-Romero said he was angry when his daughter was born because he wanted a son, reports said.

Gomez-Romero, who lives in Winter Haven, told a detective he called his daughter an “ugly girl, a prostitute and deny [sic] she was his daughter,” a Sheriff’s Office report said.

Gomez-Romero said he picked Ariana up by her hands to carry her. He said he spanked her several times out of anger because she would not stop crying.

When a detective asked Gomez-Romero what a 4-month-old could do to warrant such severe punishment, the report said he stated, “Nothing.”

“Gomez-Romero made it clear that his anger and hostility towards his daughter was due to the fact that she was a girl and he had wanted a son,” the sheriff’s report said.

Sheriff’s detectives also interviewed Ariana’s mother, Juana Rodriguez-Perez, who said Gomez-Romero would carry Ariana by her hands into the bedroom and close the door.

Shortly after, the report said, their daughter would begin to cry.

Rodriguez-Perez told the detective when she threatened to call the police on Ariana’s father, he would threaten to leave with their 2-year-old son.

Gomez-Romero is being held at the Polk County Jail.

State Attorney’s Office spokesman Chip Thullbery on Friday said that although the infant’s mother has not been arrested, “the possibility of charging her has not been foreclosed at this moment.”

Playing around with the Persians can be risky - especially when the endgame nears. US President George W Bush is learning this civilizational truth. He could have learned from the Jimmy Carter administration.

The similarity is striking. A beleaguered White House increasingly looks irrelevant while the alienated country keenly searches for an idea of leadership that can offer a clean break with the past. That was also how the Carter administration looked 30 years ago.

What can a superpower do if someone “threatens” it? The Pentagon warned on Monday that five small Iranian speedboats “threatened” a powerful US fleet comprising one frigate, a destroyer and a cruiser in the Strait of Hormuz by coming within 500 meters of them. It warned of “provocative actions that could lead to a dangerous incident in the future”. Tehran calmly shrugged it off, “That is something normal that takes place every now and then for each party, and it is settled after identification of the two parties.”

Surely, the US can attack Iran in retribution. That is always the prerogative of a superpower in a unipolar world. That will also be fully in accord with the Bush administration’s doctrine of pre-emptive war. The influential Israeli lobby in Washington would even ensure a bipartisan consensus, despite the divisiveness and acrimony in US politics in an election year.

Russian missiles for Iran

But there is a rider. A war against Iran may not be an option for long. Moscow has begun hinting that Russia’s S-300 missiles are being dispatched to Iran. There is much constructive ambiguity over the subject in both Moscow and Tehran, which leaves Washington nervous and guessing. The medium-range S-300 surface-to-air missiles, together with the short-range Tor-M1 systems supplied by Moscow to Tehran earlier, would help counter any attempt by the Bush administration to bully Iran. To quote the Russian daily Izvestiya, “Iran will be Moscow’s trump card in its drive against the third stage of US missile defenses in Poland and the Czech Republic.”

President Vladimir Putin’s “asymmetrical response” could drill a hole right through Bush’s Middle Eastern policy bucket. The Tor-M1 is equally effective against aircraft, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, but it is a close-battle weapon, the last defense line that engages or eliminates targets that may get through the S-300s. That is to say, Tor-M1 plus S-300 would for the first time provide Iran a credible modern multi-echelon air defense system covering any key strategic facility.

What does it add up to? The Bush administration is beginning to grasp that it has no option but to negotiate with Iran. But a new danger is that negotiations with Iran, too, may soon become a non-option. Persians generally don’t talk with people who are inconsequential. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said last week that at the moment, relations with the US are of “no benefit to the Iranian nation. The day such relations are of benefit, I will be the first one to approve of that.” He seems to be anticipating the post-Bush era.

US policy disintegrating

These geopolitical realities cannot be overlooked. Bush was due to set out from Washington on Wednesday on his Middle East tour - Israel, Palestine, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia and Egypt - virtually with empty hands. The gamble looks desperate, even for a congenital gambler. Distrust of US regional policy in the Persian Gulf region has extended even to Kuwait, which hosts about 15,000 US troops and which served as the launch pad for the Iraq invasion in 2003. Bush has two objectives in his Middle East mission - weigh in on the faltering post-Annapolis Palestinian-Israeli peace process of last November and seek support for US concerns about Iran.

Heartland cops bust counterfeiting ring

On Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at about 6:00pm, officers of the Moberly Police Department’s tactical team and patrol division executed a search warrant at 853 W Coates.

The warrant, issued by Associate Circuit Judge Cynthia Suter, based on an affidavit filed by Randolph County Prosecuting Attorney Mike Fusselman, was in conjunction with an investigation concerning the passing of counterfeit currency at two Moberly businesses on January 7, 2008.

During the execution of the warrant, officers seized crack cocaine, cash and a cellular telephone.

A 40 year old man, who recently moved to Moberly from the Kansas City area, was taken into custody and transported to the Moberly city jail.

On January 9, 2008, Associate Circuit Judge Suter issued an arrest warrant for Kenneth Arnez Birch for Possession of Controlled Substance, with bond set at $10,000.00. Birch was later transferred to the Randolph County Justice Center.

The investigation concerning the counterfeit currency is continuing.

Alton woman arrested after allegedly leaving kids to smoke crack

Alton, IL (KMOV) - A woman in east Alton is arrested for endangering her children just an hour after being released from jail.

Police say they first arrested Latrina Philpot, 33 Monday morning when her boyfriend called police and said she left her kids to smoke crack.

She was released on a $200 bond later that day, but then re-arrested for disturbing the peace.

Theft-Ring Suspects Charged in Unsolved Homicide

Two people arrested Thursday in an alleged theft ring in Fayetteville also face charges for a homicide in Robeson County.

Anthony Edric Pinkson, 29, and Loretta Lynn Goins, 40, were charged Thursday in connection with the theft ring in which the suspects claimed to be the owners of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and guns that were reported stolen, the Cumberland County sheriff’s office said.

Investigators then linked them to the Dec. 7 shotgun slaying of Andy Oxendine, 57, who was killed during a home invasion on Philadelphus Road in Pembroke.

Both will be returned to Robeson County to face murder charges.

In the theft ring case, Pinkston, of 20203 Lee Lane, Laurinburg, is charged with larceny, breaking and entering, possession of a firearm by a felon, felony conspiracy, possession of stolen property and one count of safecracking.

Goins, of 3623 Shem Creek Drive, is charged with larceny, breaking and entering, and felony conspiracy, possession of stolen property and one count of safecracking.

Margaret Tyler, 55, of 2524 Penny Drive, was also charged with possession of stolen property. Authorities said she allowed the items to be stored at her house.

First court appearances were pending for Pinkston and Goins. Tyler made a first court appearance Thursday in Cumberland County.

Two Arrested For Robeson County Murder

2 face murder charges in break-in death

A Myrtle Beach man is behind bars after police charged him with kidnapping.

Myrtle Beach Police Captain David Knipes said investigators charged Ronald Miller Sunday with kidnapping, armed robbery with a deadly weapon, and first degree burglary.

Knipes said Miller and another unidentified suspect knocked on the door of a Myrtle Beach man’s home just after midnight Saturday and tried to rob the victim.

Knipes says Miller and the other man went into a home armed with what turned out to be a toy gun.

Police say the victim noticed the gun wasn’t real, then began attacking the suspects before one of the suspects ran from the home.

The victim held Miller at the home until police arrived, according to police.

Miller will face a General Sessions judge on the charges, that hearing won’t be for several more days.

Miller remains in the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A man said he will file a lawsuit against a south Florida bar after he was asked to leave because of his gold teeth.

The dress code at a bar in West Palm Beach bans the dental gold-plated covers also known as “grills.”

Shawn Anderson said he told the manager he wouldn’t remove his permanently installed gold teeth. He said the rule is discriminatory because many black people have the fixtures.

Owner John Webb said he doesn’t want people making a statement with their dress when they come in.

Anderson said he plans to file his lawsuit in the next few weeks.

Police say 29 year old Aundria Jones negligently killed her two boys. They say she left them home alone to go out and party on New Year’s Eve while her 4 and 7 year old burned to death in the family’s Southeast Memphis Condo.

“All the flames, I saw it. I was hoping and praying no one was in there. Then they brought those children out and it just saddened me.”

Neighbor Trenisha Hakeem watched the whole scene. She watched the firefighters battle the fire, saw the boys mother, all dressed up, in the back of a squad car…. Hakeem was one of many neighbors who had to watch firemen pull two bodies, two children from the burned home.

A local pharmacist will spend the next 6 months in jail for stealing the narcotics she was supposed to use to fill prescriptions.

It didn’t take long for a jury to convict the Waldorf woman after they watched a key piece of evidence. The crime was captured on surveillance tape.

Surveillance video shows pharmacist Brenda Jackson helping herself to bottles of narcotics and putting them in her lab coat. In one heist, prosecutors say she stole 900 tablets in all. She took the pills from the pharmacy at Kaiser Permanente in Temple Hills where she worked.

After she was caught, police executed a search warrant at her Waldorf home. Inside, investigators found crates full of drugs valued at close to $150,000. They also found evidence that she and her husband, who’s also a pharmacist, were re-packaging and re-selling the narcotics.

According to prosecutor Joseph Wright, “They did establish a secondary company, Jackson Pharmaceutical LLC, and they used that company in order to funnel the illegal sales of the pharmaceutical drugs.”

The drugs that were seized included Prevacid, an antacid, and Lipitor, a popular drug to treat high cholesterol.

Court records show some of the drugs seized at the Jackson home may be from Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington DC, where her husband, Raymond, worked as the head of pharmacy services.

Upon hearing the news of Jackson’s conviction, one neighbor told 9NEWS NOW reporter Nancy Yamada, “It’s puzzling to hear that somebody of that nature with two great jobs like that would do something sneaky like that.”

Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Glenn Ivey says the evidence is indisputable. Now, Jackson will pay the price.

“She’s going to lose her license, she’s going to go to jail,” says Ivey. He added, “she’s going to have to pay $85,000. I hope this will be a strong deterrent to anyone who thinks about abusing her position in this way.”

Ivey says Jackson’s husband, Raymond, faces similar charges - in the District.

Detectives have charged a Tennessee parolee in a series of hotel robberies on New Year’s Day.

Elmi Abdi, 30, was identified as the man who held up a clerk at an Elm Hill Pike hotel Tuesday morning. He left without any money.

Five minutes later, police said, a man matching Abdi’s description tried to rob a clerk a hotel on Briley Parkway. The clerk ran into an office and Abdi fled without taking anything.

Minutes later, police said, he robbed a clerk at a hotel on Murfreesboro Pike.

The clerk identified him as the same person who robbed her in 2002.

She positively identified him to police, who also received the confirmation from the second clerk he confronted on Tuesday.

David and Tammy Godfrey are moving. They managed Hamilton Inn on Briley Parkway. They were there Tuesday when a man tried to rob the front desk clerk.

“He walked in, waved a gun at the front desk clerk and she took off to the back,” Godfrey said.

Police said the same man hit three more hotels over the holidays.

The day after Christmas the suspect held up the clerk at a motel on Wallace Road and got a couple hundred dollars.

Some of the New Year’s Day robberies were caught on tape.

“The lady recognized him as robbing her in 2002 and positively identified him as the suspect that robbed her on New Year’s Day,” said Jeff Ball of Metro police. “She was visibly upset about the matter.”

Police said the clerk started crying after she saw Abdi’s picture.

A Metro judge sent him to prison for the 2002 robbery. He was released in August after serving half of an eight-year sentence.

I think the parole system needs to be taken a look at,” David Godfrey said.

The Godfreys cannot believe Abdi was let go, and even worse he’d rented a room right next to them.

“You know we could have been innocently walking out and gotten mugged,” Tammy Godfrey said. “A child could have walked by and gotten mugged.”

Police asked Abdi if he remembered robbing the same clerk. He said he didn’t, but he recognized himself in the surveillance video.

He told police he was drunk during the robbery six years ago and the ones over the holidays.

He faces a parole violation charge in addition to new robbery charges.

If he’s convicted, he will go back to prison to serve the rest of his old sentence or about four years.

He could also get more time for the new robberies.

Abdi is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond.

NFL offensive tackle Stockar McDougle was charged with felony battery after a shoving match with the owner and bookkeeper at a plant nursery Friday morning, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

McDougle, who was born in Fort Lauderdale and plays with the Jacksonville Jaguars, got into an argument over an unpaid debt, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesman Elliot Cohen.

McDougle, 30, was arrested and charged with felony battery on a person 65 years of age or older Friday afternoon, and booked into the Broward County Jail. His bond is set at $2,500.

The arrest affidavit stated that the owner of Mitchell Landscaping, at 2816 W. Sunrise Blvd., called police after McDougle shoved him and his bookkeeper in an effort to leave instead of paying a five-year-old debt.

The owner, Quilone Mitchell, said McDougle became upset when they told him that they could collect interest on a bounced check of $1,200 from 2002. Mitchell said McDougle now owed him $2,229.48.

According to the affidavit, McDougle grabbed the check from the desk of the bookkeeper and started to leave, but the bookkeeper then tried to take the check back. McDougle pushed her, causing her to stumble against a wall, according to the report. When Mitchell tried to get the check, McDougle pushed him away causing him to fall against the counter.

Mitchell then struck McDougle’s car with a shovel, according to the report.

McDougle later showed up at BSO District Headquarters with an attorney, said Cohen.

Rafaela Mendz was arrested after TIA police found a blackjack in her carry-on bag.

An airport spokeswoman tells us that when police asked her what she was doing carrying the bat-like, leather covered stick through the passenger screening area, she told them it was “to smack men’s hands when they got fresh.”

Mendez was booked into the Orient Road Jail and charged with carrying a concealed weapon. The incident took place at around 4 a.m. at Airside C, no word on where Mendez was travelling to.

Punta Gorda Police Department solves series of copper wire thefts

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Punta Gorda Detectives have arrested a man they say stole $23-hundred dollars worth of copper wire from two low-income residences under construction.

Detectives say 62-year-old Samuel Singleton stole the copper wire in late November.

The homes are still under construction and are located on East Helen Street and East Virginia Avenue.

The superintendent of the building says the burglary set them back by two weeks. He also says it will cost the builder and Charlotte County thousands of dollars.

“They stole it once and we had to replace it. Then, they came back about a week later after we had replaced it, and stole it again,” says building superintendent Ernie Manley.

A tip to Punta Gorda Police led them from the East Virginia Avenue property to Singleton’s home, just a few feet away. In his home they found not only copper wire behind his couch, but also in his grill.

“To his demise, he was putting the wire in his barbecue grill and melting it which left a lot of evidence there,” says Detective Harvey Ayers. “So it wasn’t the smartest way to do it.”

Singleton is now being held at the Charlotte County Jail.

A 25-year-old man suspected of firing the bullet that killed a woman and a child early New Year’s told police investigators he was shooting at a streetlight, according to court documents.

Pedro Cortez appeared in court for the first time today, and a judge ordered him held without bail.

Cortez has not been formally charged but was arrested on suspicion of two counts of murder in the deaths of Becky Yanez, 47, and a cousin, 11-year-old Angelica Martinez.

Cortez, wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt, stood impassively before Denver County Judge Melvin Okamoto, then mouthed “I love you” to relatives as he left the courtroom.

Cortez’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, asked the judge to schedule a bail hearing, but Okamoto made no decision on that request.

Denver police investigators have suggested that the fatal gunshot was fired from several hundred yards away by someone celebrating the arrival of 2008. Investigators initially thought the single bullet, which went through the front wall of a home at 4708 W. 11th Ave., was fired from a high-powered rifle. However, an affidavit for Cortez’s arrest said he admitted firing a .44-caliber revolver at a streetlight at the corner of Wells Place and Winona Court — located across Lakewood and Dry Gulch Park from the home where Yanez and Martinez died.

According to court documents, when police investigators went to the place where Cortez said he was shooting, they noted that the home on 11th Avenue was “directly in the background to the south.”

The pair were at a family gathering when the bullet tore through the front wall of the home about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday. It hit Yanez in the head, killing her instantly, and then struck the girl in the side. She was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center, where she died.

Members of Cortez’s family and relatives of the two people who died were both in the courtroom, and extra Denver sheriff’s deputies were on hand. But there were no ill words exchanged and, in fact, Angelica’s aunt said she knows Cortez’s wife.

A first-of-its-kind boat that doubles as a submarine was tested Friday afternoon at Kingsley Lake, which is west of Camp Blanding.

At first glance, some onlookers would probably think the test was a million-dollar ship sinking. But that was not the case. The Hyper-Sub Submersible Powerboat is a combination boat and submarine that is supposed to go underwater.

Developers said as a boat it can hit speeds of up to 35 mph, and as a sub it can go 5 mph and as far as 600 feet under water.
