Dallas police: Mom who threw kids off overpass has criminal record

A 27-year-old woman with an extensive criminal background flung her two sons from an overpass onto a busy Dallas freeway Wednesday morning, and then jumped herself, police said.

Khandi Busby faced possible charges of attempted capital murder, said Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse, police spokesman.

She was taken to Baylor Medical Center and her boys, Gary Ford, 8, and Derrick Tennison, 6, were at Children’s Medical Center at Dallas, police said.

All three were in critical but stable condition after surviving the 22-foot drop off the overpass for Jim Miller Road that spans Interstate 30 in east Dallas, also known as the R.L. Thornton Freeway, police said.

Police did not know this morning why Busby threw her children from the overpass at about 6:30 a.m., but they were able to learn what happened just before she did it, Janse said.

“The lady was with her father and two sons and he had stopped to get some gas,” Janse said. “While he was filling up, she exited the vehicle with her two sons and walked to the edge of the bridge.

“She threw her sons off of it and then she jumped.”

Witnesses said the boys struggled to keep from going over the side.

Traffic, meanwhile, was backed up about 4 miles to Gus Thomasson Road in Mesquite.

Public records show Busby was arrested in 2001, 2002 and 2005 by Dallas police, Dallas County sheriff’s deputies and Dallas Area Rapid Transit police.

Charges included assault causing bodily injury — family violence, burglary of a home; criminal trespass with a deadly weapon; aggravated robbery and assault on a public servant.

Busby has also had extensive contact with Child Protective Services, said Marissa Gonzales, a spokeswoman for the agency.

Gonzales stated in a news release that CPS was investigating Wednesday’s incident, but the boys were still hospitalized and the agency had not taken custody of them.

But in 2004, CPS investigated allegations that the boys were being neglected, specifically that they were unkempt and wore dirty clothes.

Police: Father wrote note about killing his three children

Indianapolis – The FBI in Columbus, Georgia, issued another alert for three missing children who may be headed to Indianapolis with their father.

They now say Eddie Harrington sent a letter indicating that he intended to kill the three-year-old boy and one-year-old twin girls before he left Georgia with them.

Harrington is an Indianapolis native, and he and the childrens’ mother lived here about three years ago. Harrington may be driving a 2002 Green Chevy Impala with Indiana License plate 93L4740.

A veteran Miami police officer arrested for beating her girlfriend insisted the arrest was a set-up.

“We were having an argument and that’s OK,” said Yatha LeGrand, hours after she was released from jail Tuesday. “We should be able to contain ourselves, but emotions run high.”

Bay Harbour Islands police arrested LeGrand early Tuesday morning at her condominium, following a disturbance reported by her neighbors.

LeGrand said she left as officers arrived. Then later, when she returned home, she called the lieutenant who had gone back to the station and asked to tell her side of the story.

On a recording of the phone call, LeGrand is heard complaining about financial issues with her girlfriend.

“She’s going around to every single door in the building screaming like she’s a domestic violence victim and she’s not. I’m the victim here,” LeGrand told the lieutenant.

Officers returned to the condominium to interview LeGrand and her girlfriend, Local 10′s Glenna Milberg reported. Officers said they believed LeGrand was drunk.

LeGrand’s girlfriend, who is not being identified, showed them bruises to her face, a smashed cell phone and said she feared LeGrand. She did not want to press charges, but officers did.

““The officer is fairly compelled to have to make the arrest according to state law,” said Bay Harbour Islands Police Chief Duncan Young. “The officer had seen injuries, bruising to the face, and the victim said she was afraid.”

At Miami police headquarters, LeGrand’s personnel file details her 17-year career with the department. She has received a few dozen commendations for good work and 29 reprimands, most for missing court dates and calling in sick when she was not, according to the file. Records show she was relieved of duty once in the summer of 2003, but did not detail why.

Police arrested a 22-year-old woman in the stabbing death of a Hallandale Beach man, according to the agency and court documents.

Police found Nino Lah, 47, dead inside a home in the 400 block of Poinciana Drive in the Golden Isles community early Friday, court records released Monday show. Tashah Smithe, whom a Broward Sheriff’s Officer sergeant pulled over in Lah’s truck, led authorities to Lah, according to the records.

Police did not say what Smithe’s motive was, nor did they detail detailed the circumstances that might have led to the fatal stabbing.

Some residents of Golden Isles, a secluded community of homes on the water, said the lack of information left them nervous.

“It’s sad and scary,” said Lah’s neighbor Rachel Alters. “Whoever did that should not be out roaming the streets.”

Police later said Smithe had been arrested. She is being held in Broward County North Jail without bond, on unpremeditated murder and various traffic offenses.

Here’s what court documents and police said happened:

About 1:45 a.m. Friday, Sheriff’s Office Sergeant R. Cornine pulled over a woman driving a white 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer recklessly along West Hallandale Beach Boulevard. When the officer looked inside, he saw a towel soaked in blood. Cornine removed the woman, saw that her were pants were also covered in blood and that there was a knife inside the vehicle.

Cornine found a driver’s license bearing Lah’s name and address in the 500 block of Palm Drive, also in Golden Isles, and called in Hallandale Beach police. Officers with that agency went to the house and found no one there, but they also learned about Lah’s other home nearby on Poinciana Drive, according to the records. They headed there.

When they arrived, they found the garage door open and blood smeared on the inside of the garage door, according to the report. At the front door of the house, Lah lay slumped, dead from stab wounds.

Police arrested a 22-year-old woman with murder on Monday after pulling her over for driving recklessly.

Tashah Smithe was charged with second-degree murder in the death of a Hallandale Beach man.

According to Hallandale Beach police, Smithe was driving Nino Lah’s vehicle.

Officers were dispatched to Lah’s residence at 418 Poinciana Drive, where they found the 47-year-old stabbed to death.

According to police, Smithe also had many of Lah’s personal items.

Police said they aren’t sure of a motive for the stabbing.

A 32-year-old Crescent City woman was arrested and charged with murder on Thursday after a man’s body was found in the front yard of a Putnam County home.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, along with several other agencies, launched an investigation that began at about 12:45 a.m. Thursday, when the sheriff’s office received a 911 call from a cell phone.

The caller, who did not identify herself, advised that she had been assaulted and was extremely distraught, according to the sheriff’s office.

Using the telephone number captured by the 911 system, the communication’s officers were able to identify the last known address of the caller and a deputy was sent to 517 North Main Street.

Upon his arrival, the deputy discovered the body of 29-year-old Charlton Duane King III in the front yard.

According to authorities, King had been stabbed to death. They said the woman who called 911 was located at an area hospital.

After interviewing Shalandrea Scurry-Foster and several witnesses, deputies arrested her in the slaying of King, who authorities called her significant other.

Scurry-Foster is charged with second-degree murder.

A Washington sow is accused of shooting another woman in the small of her back, near the buttocks, after an argument over a haircut.

Monique Reed, 38, was arrested Thursday and charged with shooting Lauren Newton, 28.

The shooting occurred in Reed’s apartment in the 300 block of Donnan Avenue, where Newton had gone for a haircut, police said.

A suspect linked to last year’s murder of a Lincolnville constable has his day in a Charleston courtroom. Police say Jerome Washington knew about the murder of Robert Bailey last May and that he used his car to help Walter Fayall (and Asia Prioleau) dispose of the body.

Investigators found those remains three days later in Orangeburg County after a massive manhunt.

Washington is charged with accessory after the fact of murder. He was already being held on unrelated charges.

Deputies: Suspects Took Constable’s Body on Long Journey Down HWY. 26

A West Tennessee teenager has been charged with first-degree murder after being accused of driving her car into a woman and pinning her against a wall.

Police say 18-year-old Latandria Kimble killed 24-year-old Andrea Pierce by ramming her against the wall of a carport on Sunday at the victim’s apartment in Ridgely.

Witnesses and family members told the State Gazette in Dyersburg that the victim had become involved in a romantic dispute between the suspect and a 17-year-old teenager.

Kimble is also accused of injuring the other teenager in a fight before the fatal incident.

Kimble was being held without bond in the Lake County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court March 12 for a preliminary hearing.

N.Y. Mother Confesses To Drowning Children – Mammy Arrested In Hospital Bed

NEW CASSEL, N.Y. ― A single mother on Long Island has confessed Monday to murdering her three young children, police tell CBS 2.

Sources said 27-year-old Leatrice Brewer told police she drowned the victims. Brewer was arrested Sunday in her hospital bed, just hours after she led police to a grisly scene at her home.

“It was a disturbing scene. As officers entered the apartment they walked into the bedroom and found three small children obviously deceased in the bed,” Lt. Kevin Smith from the Nassau County Police Department said.

Found dead was 6-year-old Jewell Ward and her two half-brothers, 5-year-old Michael Demesyeaux and 1-year-old Innocent Demesyeaux. A source told WCBS-TV that the mother tried several different ways to kill the children, and that there was blood at the scene.

Roodgard Demesyeux, uncle to two of the children, said his brother is devastated at losing his children, allegedly at the hands of their mother.

“It’s horrific. You would never think something like that would happen; then again, she wasn’t always right in the head,” he said.

Friends and family describe Brewer as mentally unstable, often seen having conversations with herself and doing strange things.

“What goes through my mind is, why? Why would she do that to the kids? What could these kids have done to her to make her just take their lives like that?” said Sherry Brooks, another relative.

Brewer is being evaluated at Nassau University Medical Center and could be arraigned on murder charges from her bedside Monday afternoon.

The fathers of the children said they tried, but failed to get custody of their children. The Nassau County Department of Human Services said it’s working closely with the police department in their investigation.

Police Arrest 2 On Unrelated Murder Charges

Police announced Thursday the first two homicide arrests of 2008 by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office: Quentin Joyner was charged with Monday night’s shooting death of 21-year-old Kevin Jackson, and Erica Thomas, 19, was charged in the shooting death of a man during a robbery at a Westside motel in October.

According to the arrest report, Joyner was fighting with Jackson Monday night at the Sanctuary Walk Apartments before he went to his car, got a handgun, returned and fired shots through the door.

Witnesses said Jackson jumped from a second-story window and began to run away while Joyner gave chase and fatally shot the 21-year-old.

In addition to a charge of murder, Joyner is also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police said they began building a case against Thomas in the Oct. 2 homicide of 54-year-old Jimmy Daugherty, of Kingsland, Ga., after getting a tip from the teen’s friend.

Detectives provided the friend with a recording device and they said she recorded Thomas admitting she planned to rob the victim in a Lane Avenue motel room, but the robbery “went so south.”

Thomas was a student at Raines High School at the time of the crime, which detectives said she had planned for two months.

Police say Laura Etta Robinson, a 57-year-old retiree from St. Petersburg, dragged an 8-year-old boy out of his bed one night last week, tied him up and flogged him over the course of at least three hours.

Robinson of 3932 11th Ave. S was charged Friday with false imprisonment and aggravated child abuse. She remained in the Pinellas County Jail on Saturday with bail set at $120,000.

According to a St. Petersburg Police Department report:

Robinson went to the boy as he was in bed sleeping, wrapped his wrists in duct tape and dragged him into the living room. She tied his arms to a heavy coffee table with a bungee cord and placed duct tape around his legs.

She laid him face-down with his pajama pants down on top of an empty plastic trash bag so his urine wouldn’t reach the carpet. Then she hit his behind over and over with what police described as a “long, black flexible object.”

“As she was beating him, she rested in between, alternating from striking hard — soft — then harder and harder,” the police report said. “As she was beating him, she repeated ‘obey, obey’ over and over again.”

The incident reportedly occurred from about 11 p.m. Feb. 7 to 2 a.m. Feb. 8. The report did not provide the 8-year-old’s relationship to Robinson.

“I saw one snatch his chain and the other went to punch him,” Tshwanda Smith said.

“I saw him through the door hitting him,” Eboni Smith said. “That’s when I ran out. I had one of the guys by the shirt. He turned around and started shooting.”

One bullet grazed Eboni Smith’s finger. Tshwanda Smith was shot in the knee.

“As soon as I heard the shot, a second later I felt the burning,” Tshwanda Smith said.

Tshwanda Smith went to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said an off-duty Orlando police officer witnessed a man chasing two men through the parking lot and firing a weapon.

After the shooting, police said the gunman ran down the sidewalk and into a coin laundry store. He ran out the back door of the store and into an alley where police believe he left the gun used during the shooting.

72-Year-Old Woman Arrested In Drug Bust

A 72-year-old woman was arrested Thursday night during a drug bust in Marion County, according to authorities.

Ethel Mae Thomas, along with Thomas French, 59, and James Stevenson, 28, were arrested when SWAT officers entered a home on 107th Lane.

Officers said they found $1,500 worth of crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia and cash inside the home.

All three suspects were taken to the Marion County Jail.

Deputy Seen Dumping Man From Wheelchair Faces Felony Charge

Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee said an arrest warrant for Charlette Marshall-Jones, 44, had been issued for a single count of felony abuse on a disabled person.

“That’s exactly the charge we’ve been requesting,” said John Trevena, a Largo attorney representing the paralyzed man.

The incident gained national prominence after a surveillance video surfaced this week of Marshall-Jones tipping Brian Sterner from his wheelchair during booking at Tampa’s Orient Road Jail.

Gee called it a “disgrace” Friday night.

Three jail supervisors remain on suspension for failing to act during or after the incident. Sgt. Gary Hinson, 51, Cpl. Steven Dickey, 45 and Cpl. Decondra Williams, 36 will remain on administrative leave until an investigation of their actions is concluded, Gee said.

He said Marshall-Jones is aware of the warrant for her arrest, but has not yet turned herself in. If convicted, she could face up to five years in prison.

She could not be reached by phone for comment Friday night. A telephone number listed in her name has been disconnected, and Gee said his agency did not know her whereabouts Friday night. It was not clear if she had an attorney.

Sterner, 32, was arrested Jan. 29 on a warrant for a traffic violation. He has said that Marshall-Jones grew agitated when she told him to stand up and he didn’t.

Sterner is paralyzed. He has partial movement in his arms, but is unable to use his legs.

The video shows Marshall-Jones dumping Sterner onto the floor shortly after he was wheeled into the jail’s booking area.

A woman was arrested on Friday on suspicion of beating her 2-year-old grandson unconscious during a walk, Cocoa police said.

Delores Henderson, 55, was charged with aggravated child abuse after a Cocoa police officer witnessed the attack near the intersection of Dixon and Fiske boulevards, police said.

According to Cocoa police, Henderson was pushing the toddler when she rammed the stroller into a curb, causing the 2-year-old to hit his head on the ground.

Henderson put the boy back into the stroller and began hitting him with her hands until he was unconscious, Cocoa police said.

Henderson did not cooperate with police, and she was arrested.

The 2-year-old boy was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando. His condition is not known.

The Department of Children and Families will investigate the incident.

Authorities in Augusta say a a 30-year-old man facing murder charges in the deaths of three family members is likely to also be charged with feticide.

The body of 18-year-old Allyson Pederson, who was five months pregnant, was found burned beyond recognition near Augusta Regional Airport. Her parents — 45-year-old Andrew Hartley and his 46-year-old wife, Sharon — were found at their home Saturday morning.

Adrian Tywan Hargrove is charged with three counts of murder in their deaths.

According to the Augusta Chronicle, Hargrove’s estranged wife informed authorities that he arrived at their home with blood-soaked clothing. Police then were told to check the Hartley’s home.

Richmond County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Richard Roundtree said authorities remain unsure of the motive for the killings. He said Hargrove and Pederson knew each other but authorities do not to know what extent they had a relationship.

Deputies Dump Quadriplegic Man Out Of Chair

Four Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies have been suspended after purposely tipping a quadriplegic man out of his wheelchair at a jail, authorities said Tuesday.

Orient Road Jail surveillance footage from Jan. 29 shows veteran deputy Charlette Marshall-Jones, 44, dumping Brian Sterner out of his wheelchair and searching him on the floor after he was brought in on a warrant after a traffic violation.

“This deputy, she looked at me and didn’t believe I was a quadriplegic, I guess,” Sterner said. “And, she walked behind me with those handles on the back of the hospital-grade wheelchair and just dumped it straight forward.”

Sterner broke his neck almost 14 years ago, Local 6 reported.

Sterner said when he was taken into a booking room and told to stand up, Jones grew agitated when he told her that he could not.

“She was irked that I wasn’t complying to what she was telling me to do,” he told The Tampa Tribune. “It didn’t register with her that she was asking me to do something I can’t do.”

Jones has been suspended without pay, and Sgt. Gary Hinson, 51, Cpl. Steven Dickey, 45 and Cpl. Decondra Williams, 36 have also been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

“The actions are indefensible at every level,” Chief Deputy Jose Docobo said. “Based on what I saw, anything short of dismissal would be inappropriate.”

He said the officers’ actions were an aberration.

A woman who answered Jones’ telephone said Jones was unavailable. A message left at a telephone number listed for a Steven Dickey in Tampa was not immediately returned Tuesday night.

Listings for Hinson and Williams could not be located.

“That none of the supervisors acted upon what they saw is of great concern,” Docobo said. “This is not the norm at the sheriff’s office.”

Sterner was arrested at his Riverview home and taken to the jail Jan. 29 on a charge of fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer, according to records. He posted $2,000 bond and was released Feb 3.

A warrant for Sterner’s arrest was issued after an Oct. 25 incident, in which Tampa police stopped him in Ybor City. He was stopped while driving a Mini Cooper that had been fitted with hand pedals and was cited for blocking an intersection.

“My client was stopped that night and was given a traffic citation, so how could he be fleeing and eluding?” Sterner’s lawyer John Trevena said. “We’re very skeptical about the basis for the charge itself.”

Trevena said he hopes authorities investigate the deputies for criminal charges. He said he was “mortified” when he watched the footage.

“I couldn’t believe that a detention deputy would be so callous toward an individual, whether they were disabled or not,” he said.

On Sterner’s MySpace page, the 32-year-old cites interests that include wheelchair rugby, yoga, art shows and documentaries.

Gang ‘laughed as teenager was stabbed’

A gang of youths screaming “kill him” chased and stabbed a 16-year-old boy to death, the Old Bailey was told. Kodjo Yenga was ambushed by about 12 children, including two girls, armed with knives and bats, the jury heard.

Kodjo was left on the ground with a single stab wound to the heart when the gang laughed and ran away as passers-by tried to help, the court was told. Six boys, aged between 14 and 17, all deny murdering Kodjo in March last year.

Deepika Kohli was walking along Hammersmith Grove, in west London, when she spotted Kodjo running away. Sir Allan Green QC, for the prosecution, said: “Behind him was a group of 10 black youths. She noticed two girls as well. She could hear a few members of the group shouting ‘catch him, kill him’.”

Two or three members of the group caught him and appeared to stab the back of his jacket, before Kodjo managed to slip their grasp and get away. The group seemed “happy, they were laughing and smiling” and they ran off, Sir Allan told the court.

It appeared Kodjo had agreed to have a one-to-one fight with a member of the MDP gang, jurors heard. When the pair confronted each other, another eight or nine boys, including one with a bull terrier, arrived to back up their gangmate, the jury was told. The case continues.

A District of Columbia woman accused of killing her four daughters called her oldest girl “Jezebel,” a detective testified Monday at a hearing in which a judge ruled that the case against the mother can proceed.

District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Frederick H. Weisberg ordered that Banita Jacks, 33, remain held on murder charges while a grand jury investigates. He set another hearing for April 4.

D.C. police detective Mitchell A. Credle testified that Jacks told investigators that she did not want Brittany Jacks, 16, to be a bad influence on her other children.

U.S. marshals found the decomposing bodies of the girls in Jacks’ southeast Washington rowhouse while serving an eviction notice on Jan. 9. Authorities have said the girls died at least 15 days earlier.

Although autopsies are still incomplete, authorities have said that there was evidence that Brittany had been stabbed. There was evidence of binding on the necks of the Tatianna Jacks, 11, and N’Kiah Fogle, 6, and evidence of blunt force injury to the head of Aja Fogle, 5, and binding on her neck, authorities said.

Credle testified that Jacks told investigators she had two physical fights with Brittany and called the girl “Jezebel,” a reference to an evil character from the Bible. He said Jacks also told police the girls were possessed by demons, which she wanted to remove.

The detective said Jacks’ home was mostly empty, lacking food, clothing and furniture. He also said neighbors reported that Jacks and her children were seen in May removing furniture that Jacks said was covered with ants.

Shortly after the girls were found, six social workers were fired for failing to properly address alarming complaints about Jacks’ care for her daughters. The employees included front-line workers and a division director.

A union representing child welfare workers protested the firings and filed an appeal on behalf of three workers who are union members.

Harvey will be in court on Thursday on one count of theft.

Mother Gets 4 Years In Son’s Death At Hands Of Boyfriend

A mother could spend up to four years in prison after she admitted to playing a role in the death of her son.

Luzmilda Blue pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of endangering children, following the June conviction of her boyfriend on murder and rape charges.

A judge sentenced Lamont Hunter to death in September for sexually assaulting and beating 3-year-old Trustin Blue, who later died from his injuries.

Luzmilda Blue may gain the opportunity for early release if she meets certain conditions ordered by a judge, and her case will be reviewed again next year.

She had previously lost custody of her son after Hunter was accused of causing broken bones and other injuries to the boy.

Five months after Trustin was returned to her care, he was brought to an emergency room with broken bones, severe bruising, bruised and swollen genitals and other injuries doctors said were consistent with rape.

The boy never regained consciousness and died the next day from what coroners said were two fatal blows to his skull.

Ex-inmate says mother confessed to putting baby in microwave

For much of the day, it sat hidden from view in the courtroom.

Then, a prosecutor and forensic pathologist slowly peeled off the brown wrapping paper to reveal to the jury a small black microwave oven – the appliance a woman is accused of using to kill her month-old daughter.

Russell Uptegrove, a forensic pathologist with the Montgomery County coroner’s office, testified Thursday that he went to a toy store and found a doll that nearly matched the dimensions of the child and placed the doll in the oven.

“Clearly, she could have fit in there,” Uptegrove said of the baby.

China Arnold, 27, is accused of burning and killing Paris Talley by putting the child in the oven at her Dayton home in August 2005. Arnold, who has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, could face the death penalty if convicted.

Sitting at the defense table, Arnold showed little emotion as her trial got under way. Testimony was to continue Friday in a trial expected to last three weeks.

Earlier Thursday, a woman who shared a jail cell with Arnold said the woman confessed to the crime.

Linda Williams testified that she developed a sexual relationship with Arnold when the two were cellmates in the Montgomery County Jail in March and that Arnold confided in her about what happened to her baby.

Arnold feared her boyfriend believed he wasn’t the father of the child and was going to leave her, Williams said.

“She said she put the baby into the microwave and started it and left the house,” Williams said.

Williams said she asked Arnold how she got the child into the oven.

“She said she fit right in,” Williams said.

Under cross examination by defense attorney Jon Paul Rion, Williams acknowledged that she met with police investigators and initially said Arnold told her she didn’t know how the baby had died.

Williams, who has since been released from jail, said she didn’t tell investigators about Arnold’s confession earlier because she had feelings for the mother.

“The evidence is going to show that she did not purposely take the life of her own baby,” Rion said in his opening statement.

Arnold, who has three sons, loved having a daughter and quit college and her job so she could stay home and take care of her, he said.

Rion said other people had access to the baby, Arnold was intoxicated to the point of blacking out when the child died and people questioned about the case changed their stories. Rion also raised questions about the reliability of the science when it comes to determining the effect of microwaves on humans.

Uptegrove said the thermal burns on the baby were different from those that would have been suffered in a fire, an electrical shock or by hot water, an iron or with chemicals. He said it took him awhile to consider that the burns may have come from a microwave oven.

“It was so heinous to think of that, that I couldn’t convince myself it was a real possibility,” Uptegrove said.

He said DNA recovered from the ceiling of the oven matched that of the baby.

During the opening statement by Assistant Montgomery County Prosecutor Daniel Brandt, a photo of the burned baby was flashed on a screen for the 12-member jury to see. Arnold sat quietly, occasionally jotting notes on a yellow legal pad.

Brandt said Arnold killed the child after arguing with her boyfriend over whether they had been faithful to each other.

When the couple brought the baby to the hospital, Brandt said, Arnold exclaimed: “‘I killed my baby. I killed my baby.”‘

An Ohio man already jailed for drugs faces charges of impregnating his girlfriend’s 10-year-old daughter.

The investigation began after the girl gave birth to a daughter in November at University Hospital in Cincinnati. The hospital reported the birth to the Hamilton County Department of Job and Family Services because of the mother’s age.

On Wednesday, investigators learned that Michael Chaffer’s DNA showed him to be the father, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Chaffer is in a jail in Columbus serving a one-year sentence.

Also Wednesday, there was a status hearing on the girl and baby. They originally lived with the girl’s mother, who was ordered not to allow any adult men into her home, until investigators found Chaffer there.

The baby is in a foster home, while the girl is living with relatives. The mother has been barred from seeing her granddaughter and can only have supervised visits with her daughter.

(Germantown, TN 1/16/2008) A maid has been arrested in connection with a home invasion in Germantown last Friday morning .

Police say Carra Latrease Abston, is the person who planned and helped in the home invasion of her employer. The home invasion happened in the 2600 block of Park Creek Drive. Police arrested Abston Wednesday morning at her Memphis home.

Abston is charged with aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery and is being held on a $200,000 bond.

Lee Covey is an Inspector for the Germantown police, “Abston cleaned house for the victim for more than two years. She’s been a suspect since the start of the investigation. We charged her after discovering the extent of her involvement in the home invasion. She is the link between the victim and the three men who carried out the home invasion. She provided information to the three male suspects and assisted in the robbery.”

Clarissa Annette Smith was angry with her sister, so she waved around a samurai sword and cut her, Hillsborough County deputies say.

Deputies arrested Smith, 42, at 12:42 a.m. today at her Brandon home.

Late this morning in Brandon, Smith armed herself with the sword, waved it and yelled at her sister, a criminal arrest affidavit states. Smith sliced her sister’s abdomen, causing a 4-inch superficial cut.

Her sister tried to grab the sword, according to the affidavit, and was cut on her left fingers and hand. She has a severed tendon in her middle finger that will require surgery, the affidavit states.

Smith, of 601 Brentwood Place, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault.

Smith, who has a bullet scar on her right arm, remained in Orient Road Jail today. Bail had not been set.

Lamont Hunter is sitting on Ohio’s death row for torturing and killing his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son while baby-sitting the toddler in early 2006.

But Trustin Blue‘s mother faces charges of her own Monday in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court.

Luzmilda Blue, 31, goes to trial for child endangering.

She is accused of failing to protect her son.

Prosecutors say she knew Hunter abused Trustin when she left him alone with the boy and their infant daughter and went to work the morning of Jan. 19, 2006.

The next time she saw her son, he lay dying on her couch, suffering from multiple injuries, including severe head trauma and anal tears.

“I think she made a choice of herself over her kid,” Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor Seth Tieger said. “In our opinion, she knew Hunter tortured and abused Trustin, and still on the day in question left Trustin in his care.”

Others would have gladly watched the toddler, Tieger said.

A panel of three Hamilton County Common Pleas judges convicted Hunter, 39, of aggravated murder, rape and child endangering. The judges sentenced Hunter to death.

Blue’s lawyer, Barry Levy, did not return a phone call for comment.

“I will never forget the brutality of this case as long as I live,” said Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Ralph “Ted” Winkler at Hunter’s sentencing.

For more than a week, judges heard testimony about the abuse Trustin suffered.

He was abused twice in 2004, with Hamilton County Department of Job and Family Services intervening after the tot turned up with injuries the second time.

In that case, he suffered injuries to his leg and penis while alone with Hunter.

The agency removed Trustin from Blue’s care for a year, but once she took parenting classes and complied with other orders, Trustin was sent home.

Blue has been free on bond since shortly after her arrest the week after Trustin’s death.

As her case has weaved through the criminal system – stalled while waiting for Hunter’s case to move forward first – a Hamilton County Juvenile Court magistrate took her three other children away, placing them with relatives.

Blue retained supervised visitation rights.

Cops: N.Y. Woman Stuck Son In Oven As Punishment – Boy, 7, Found With Burns To Arms, Legs, Nose, Hands

RAMAPO, N.Y. (CBS) ― Police arrested a 26-year-old woman Friday, claiming she abused her 7-year-old son by sticking him in the oven and turning it on as a form of punishment.

The arrest stems from two separate incidents in 2007 when the child appeared to have suffered numerous injuries.

The first incident occurred last July when the boy arrived at a daycare center where police say owner Joelle Lherisson noticed the boy had burns to his arm, hand, nose, and left leg. Lherisson, 37, however, failed to report the boy’s condition to Child Protective Services or police, as required by law, and the boy was returned home to his mother, Tiffany Fraser.

Police say the second incident occurred just four months later in November, when a woman found the same boy by himself at an area market. When police arrived, the boy told officers that he ran away from home and didn’t want to return.

The boy, who still had burns on him, claimed his mother punished him by shoving him inside their oven.

“The mother had threatened to place him in the oven, and in fact did do that,” said Ramapo Dt. Lt. Brad Weidel.

Alton woman arrested after allegedly leaving kids to smoke crack

Alton, IL (KMOV) – A woman in east Alton is arrested for endangering her children just an hour after being released from jail.

Police say they first arrested Latrina Philpot, 33 Monday morning when her boyfriend called police and said she left her kids to smoke crack.

She was released on a $200 bond later that day, but then re-arrested for disturbing the peace.

Woman Dislikes Hairstyle, Shoots Braider’s Friend

Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a woman accused of shooting an acquaintance over a hairdo.

Nikeya Alston, 26, is named in an aggravated assault warrant for shooting 25-year-old Tiffany Jackson Friday night, according to a Metro police news release.

Police said Alston was unhappy with the way Jackson’s roommate braided her hair on Thursday. She demanded that Jackson redo her hair, but Jackson refused.

On Friday morning, Jackson’s car tires were flattened. Later in the day, she approached Alston outside her apartment. Alston, who was armed with a gun, shot Jackson before fleeing.

Jackson was treated for a gunshot wound to her leg at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Police said Alston’s arrest history includes charges such as assault, disorderly conduct, and vandalism.

Wingate football player, wife charged in death of his ex-girlfriend

A Wingate University football player and his wife are charged with murder in the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend, who was a high school cheerleader in South Carolina.

Authorities say Pernell Clayton Thompson and Yolanda Dee Thompson are being held at the Union County jail, accused in the death of 16-year-old Marisha Jeter.

Police said Thompson’s wife did not like him maintaining contact with Jeter. The Thompsons were married in the summer and have a child together.

Jeter was reported missing Thursday night and her body was discovered under a bridge two days later. Her car was found torched in another county. Jeter’s body was discovered by an art student who was taking photographs at the bridge in Lockhart, which is about 10 miles northeast of the rural town of Union.

Thompson was a wide receiver for three years at Wingate, which is about 30 miles southeast of Charlotte.

Cumberland County sheriff’s detectives have charged a woman in the death of a Spring Lake man who was found lying in his front yard.

Beverly Ann Black, 45, of 121 Bogart St., was arrested Sunday night. She was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Terrance Anthony Brockington, 42, of 103 N. Mitchely St.

He was on the front lawn of his residence at around 8 p.m. Sunday and had been stabbed, authorities said. Investigators say a dispute between the pair led to the crime.

Brockington was transported by ambulance to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he later died. An autopsy will be conducted by the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Chapel Hill to determine the exact cause of death.

Black was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond. She was expected to make a first court appearance Monday.

Police: Mom Arrested In Case Of Toddler Tortured By Hot Oil, Dryer

The mother of a 17-month-old child was arrested on Friday after her boyfriend was accused of pouring hot cooking oil on the boy and using a hair dryer to burn his skin off because he apparently would not stop crying and whining, Apopka police said

Stokes’ boyfriend, Darlanne Toussaint, was charged on Thursday with felony attempted murder on suspicion he abused the boy in an Apopka apartment.

According to a charging affidavit, Toussaint poured hot cooking oil on the boy, shook him for 10 minutes and burned him with a blow dryer to the point that his skin fell off.

“It is alarming to think that an individual can cause this type of harm to a human being, let along an infant of 17 months old,” Apopka police Officer Steven Popp said.

Investigators said Toussaint abused the infant “because he was tired of his crying and whining.”

“The majority of us officers have children, and it is hard for a case like this not to affect you emotionally,” Popp said.

The child remains hospitalized in stable condition.
