By  a Jew with morals, Eric Margolis  - This century’s bloodiest crime was utterly ignored. The Unknown Holocaust In 1932, the Jew-speaking  leader, Josef Stalin, unleashed genocide on  White people in Ukraine. Stalin determined to force Ukraine’s millions of independent farmers - called `kulaks’- into collectivized Soviet agriculture, and to crush Ukraine’s growing spirit of nationalism.

Ukraine’s nightmare had begun in 1932. Faced by resistance to collectivization, Stalin unleashed terror upon Ukraine. Moscow dispatched 25,000 fanatical young party militants - earlier versions of Mao’s `Red Guards’ - to force 10 million Ukrainian peasants into collective farms. Secret police units of OGPU began selective executions of recalcitrant farmers.

When Stalin’s red guards failed to make a dent in this immense number, OGPU was ordered to begin mass executions. But there were simply not enough Chekists (secret police) to kill so many people, so Stalin decided to replace bullets by a much cheaper medium of death, mass starvation.

All seed stocks, grain, silage, and farm animals were confiscated from Ukraine’s farms. Ethiopia’s communist dictator, Mengistu Haile Mariam, used the very same method in the 1970’s to force collectivization: the resulting famine cased one million deaths.

OGPU agents and Red Army troops sealed all roads and rail lines. Nothing came in or out of Ukraine. Farms were searched and looted of food and fuel. Ukrainians quickly began to die of hunger, cold, and sickness.

When OGPU failed to meet weekly execution quotas, Stalin sent henchman, Lazar Kaganovitch, to destroy Ukrainian resistance. Kaganovitch, the Soviet Eichmann, made quota, shooting 10,000 Ukrainians weekly. Eighty percent of all Ukrainian intellectuals were executed. Ukrainian Nikita Khruschchev helped supervise the slaughter.

During the bitter winter of 1932-33, mass starvation created by Kaganovitch and OGPU hit full force. Ukrainians ate their pets, boots, belts, bark, and roots. Cannibalism became common; parents even ate infant children.

The precise number of Ukrainians murdered by Stalin’s custom-made famine and Cheka firing squads remains unknown to this day. KGB’s archives, and recent work by Russian historians, shows at least 7 million Ukrainians died. Ukrainian historians put the figure at 9 million, or higher. Twenty-five percent of Ukraine’s population was exterminated.

Six million other farmers across the USSR were starved or shot during collectivization. Stalin told Churchill he liquidated ten million peasants during the 1930’s. Add mass executions by the Cheka in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania; the genocide of 3 million Muslims of the USSR; massacres of Cossacks and Volga Germans. In total, Soviet industrial genocide accounted for at least 40 million victims, not including 20 million war dead.

Kaganovitch, and many senior OGPU officers( later, NKVD) were Jewish. The predominance of Jews among Bolshevik leaders, and the frightful crimes and cruelty inflicted by Stalin’s Cheka on Ukraine, the Baltic, and Poland, led the victims of Red Terror to blame the Jewish people for both communism and their suffering. As a direct result, during the subsequent Nazi occupation of Eastern Europe, the region’s innocent Jews became the target of ferocious revenge by Ukrainians, Balts, and Poles.

While the world is by now fully aware of the destruction of Europe’s Jews by the Nazis, the story of the numerically larger holocaust in Ukraine has been suppressed, or ignored. Ukraine’s genocide occured 8-9 years before Hitler began the Jewish Holocaust, and was committed, unlike Nazi crimes, before the world’s gaze. But Stalin’s murder of millions was simply denied, or concealed by a leftwing conspiracy of silence that continues to this day. In the strange moral geometry of mass murder, only Nazis are guilty.

Socialist luminaries like Bernard Shaw, Beatrice and Sidney Webb, and PM Edouard Herriot of France, toured Ukraine during 1932-33, and proclaimed reports of famine were false. Shaw announced, `I did not see one under-nourished person in Russia.’ New York Times correspondent Walter Duranty, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his Russian reporting, wrote claims of famine were `malignant propaganda.’ Seven million people were dying around them, yet these fools saw nothing. The New York Times has never repudiated Duranty’s lies.

Modern leftists do not care to be reminded their ideological and historical roots are entwined with this century’s greatest crime - Stalin’s mass murder machine - the inevitable result of enforced social engineering and marxist theology. Had Germany won the war, today’s `reformed’ Euro- Nazis would take the same amnesiac approach to Hitler as modern European socialists do to Stalin.

Western historians delicately skirt the sordid fact that the governments of Britain, the US, and Canada were fully aware of the Ukrainian genocide and Stalin’s other monstrous crimes. Yet they eagerly welcomed him as an ally during World War II. Stalin, whom an adoring Roosevelt called `Uncle Joe,’ murdered four times more people than Adolf Hitler - and a decade earlier. Roosevelt and Churchill colluded with and helped save history’s most murderous regime. Time to face this ugly fact.

None of the Soviet mass murderers who committed genocide were ever brought to justice. `Soviet Eichmann’ Lazar Kaganovitch died peacefully in Moscow a few years ago, still wearing his Order of the Soviet Union, and enjoying a generous state pension.

This was the opinion of professor Anna van der Hoven, a criminologist from Unisa in commenting on a Centurion case in which a man and a woman were repeatedly burnt with a clothes iron by armed robbers.

According to Van der Hoven, victims said they often saw hatred and cruelty in the eyes of their attackers.

“I don’t know if that refers to the past and why they don’t just take what they want and leave.”

Racist elements

“There are underlying racist elements. They were perhaps deprived and want to take revenge.”

“The attackers are sometimes not South African, but people from other African countries, where there is also unrest.”

Van der Hoven said it gave attackers a sense of power to hurt people.

“They feel they can intimidate people. They are in control and can decide if they want to torture you and how long you have to live.”

She added that rehabilitation programmes in prisons were not complete and criminals often came out of jail more dangerous than before. On top of this, they could decide if they wanted to take part in the programmes or not.

Dr Johan Burger, a senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, said SA’s history of violence could contribute to the problem and that violence was seen as a means to a goal.

He also said that violence could be used as an instrument to get information from victims.

They could use force to obtain information about safes or to get a PIN number from victims.

According to Burger, there was a divide between rich and poor and that some people living in abject poverty could feel they had to commit crime.

The attackers could feel frustrated with their circumstances and then take out this frustration on their victims.

Sometimes victims fought back or even made insulting comments and this could lead to violence.

“Often the attacker’s behaviour is as a result of the victim’s, but that is not always the case.”

Burger said there was a lack of research on this particular topic and one could only speculate about it.

HUNDREDS of angry Hillcrest residents bayed for the blood of five rape
suspects outside the Hillcrest Police Station yesterday.

Initially, the crowd staged a protest outside the Pinetown Magistrate’s
Court where the suspects were due to appear for the rape of a young
Kloof woman.

Seven men accosted Jessica Foord and her father at a nearby dam on
Sunday and repeatedly raped her in a field. The Foords had been walking
their dogs when they were attacked.

Five suspects were arrested on Wednesday after intense investigations.

The suspects were due for their first court appearance yesterday, but
police found out about the planned protest and brought the suspects to
court on Thursday.

Lindani Maphumulo, Thabani Ntinga, Siyabonga Ntinga, Mbotho Msomi and
Nthuthuko Chili were denied bail and were remanded into custody at
Durban’s Westville Prison until their next court appearance on March 20.

This “deception” further angered protestors, many of whom had taken time
off work and school to attend the protest.

It is believed that protestors were also riled by the rape of a
six-year-old girl in the area.

Fed up with the high crime rate in the area, residents then moved to
Hillcrest Police Station, where they demanded to see the suspects.

Residents moved to the area just outside the station’s holding cells and
shouted threats at the five suspects inside. Foord’s relatives were
among the protestors.

Private investigator Brad Nathanson, who was instrumental in tracking
down the suspects, said that community members contacted him shortly
after the rape to help in the investigation.

“I was told that there wasn’t a lot of money lying around, so I took on
the job free of charge. I started work immediately,” he said.

He said he went to the crime scene and recovered a vital piece of
information that the police had missed.

“The next day, I took Jessica and her father to the dam to point out the
crime scene. I also put out some money to my informers and waited for
information,” he said.
Two of Nathanson’s informers came back with a suspect’s name.
“They both came back with the same name, which was our hot lead. It took
us six hours to track the suspect down. He then pointed out the
suspects,” he added.

He said that the community banded together to support his team during
the investigation.
“I’m very proud at what we achieved. The community was a great help to
us,” he said.

Hillcrest resident Michelle Blanckenberg said the rape had shocked the
community into taking action against the increase of crime in the area.
She said the area where the rape occurred was a popular spot for
families.
“Enough is enough. It is unacceptable and time we stood up against these
rapes. It’s amazing how people have come together to express their anger
about the crime,” she said.
Another, Christina Dubazama from Wyebank, said she lost faith in the
local police after her daughter’s rapists were granted bail.
Dubazama’s eight-year-old daughter and grandmother were gang-raped in August last
year; their attackers paid their bail and were released.
“I know what that girl is going through. The men who attacked my family
are out there waiting to rape more women. Something needs to be done,”
she said.

Overcome with emotion, she said that she hoped that government brought
back the death penalty for those who raped and killed. “I’m tired of all
this. Our children are suffering. The powers that be should wake and see
that there is a problem with crime in this country,” she said.

Everton resident Sally van den Berg said parents were terrified to let
their children play outside.
“People are terrified after the incident. Our local police don’t help.
We gave them information and nothing was done,” she said.

Ernest Khumalo from Molweni said police failed the community when it
came to responding to calls about crime. “They are not helpful. We have
to wait for hours … We are fed up with the crime situation now,” he
said.
Police spokeswoman Danelia Veldhuizen said that police were still
searching for two suspects who are still on the run.

South African BLACK men rape babies as ‘cure’ for Aids

THE alleged rape of a nine-month-old baby girl by six men in a remote
part of rural South Africa last week has focused the nation on an 80 per
cent rise in child sexual abuse over a year, much of it connected with
the country’s Aids pandemic.
More than 67,000 cases of rape and sexual assaults against children were
reported last year, compared with 37,500 in 1998. Child welfare groups
believe that the number of unreported incidents could be up to 10 times
that number.
Some of the victims were as young as six-months-old, a number of whom
died from their injuries, while others contracted HIV. The largest
increase in attacks has been against children under seven.
Although rises in poverty, violent crime and unemployment are said to
have contributed to the escalation in child abuse, the most significant
and worrying factor is the widespread myth sweeping the country that
having sex with children provides a cure for Aids.
Cati Vawda, the director of the Children’s Rights Centre in Durban,
said: “There is a belief across South Africa that a virgin will cure a
man of HIV or Aids. We have no idea where this idea has come from, but
it has been around for a few years and has certainly taken hold.”
Kelly Hatfield, of People Opposed to Women Abused , added: “South Africa
has reached a new low. This rumour certainly has become a common
belief.”
Police say at least one of the men who attacked the nine-month-old girl
is HIV-positive. The baby has also been tested for the virus and given
anti-retroviral drugs as a precaution.
The girl - whose name has not been released - remains in intensive care
at the Kimberley Hospital. While doctors said it was likely that her
physical wounds would heal, experts remained concerned about
psychological trauma.
Even in a country that is accustomed to violent crime, the attack has
shocked the nation. Pictures of the six accused appeared on front pages
of newspapers across South Africa and radio phone-in shows were
inundated with callers demanding to know what the police and Government
were doing to stop child abuse.
More than 1,000 people, mainly women and children, gathered at the
magistrate’s court in the remote town of Upington in the north of the
country to vent their anger as the trial opened against the men, aged
between 24 and 66, accused of assaulting the infant. The crowd chanted
slogans demanding more protection for children, and waved banners and
posters.
Dozens of police and soldiers had to be deployed to stop the crowd from
surging into the courtroom, where the case was postponed until later
this month. The six accused men were remanded in custody.
South Africa has the highest number of HIV-positive citizens in the
world. According to official figures, one in nine South Africans are
infected with the virus, although many health workers believe the rate
of infection to be closer to one in eight. Schools often harbour the
worst sex offenders.
Next month, a deputy headmaster in the Eastern Cape goes on trial
accused of raping schoolgirls over a 10-year period, resulting in 20 of
them becoming pregnant.
Joan van Niekerk, the chairman of Childline South Africa, said: “How can
we hope that a school will teach children to behave responsibly when the
very people who are educating them are themselves abusers?”
The 185 child abuse cases that are reported to the police each day
represent just a fraction of the true number committed, according to
child welfare groups. Of these, just five per cent result in a
successful conviction. For those mothers aware that their children have
been abused, the decision to make a complaint is rarely easy.
Edith Kriel, a social worker who helps child victims in the Eastern
Cape, said: “Child abusers are often relatives of their victims - even
their fathers and providers. For women, making a complaint is a hard
choice because they end up losing their husbands, the breadwinners and
the roof over their heads.”

A senior reporter at the BBC has attacked the corporation’s season of programmes about the white working class.

Sarah Mukherjee, the environment correspondent, who grew up on a predominantly white council estate in Essex, said that BBC2’s White season risked reinforcing the stereotype of the white working class as violent and racist alcoholics who live on benefits.

The reporter, who is Asian, made the comments after Richard Klein (jewboy), the BBC’s commissioning editor for documentaries, said that the corporation had been “brave” to make a series of programmes about the “prejudices, alienation, fears and confusion” of the white working class.

He said in an interview with the BBC’s in-house magazine Ariel that the season should be watched by anyone “who thinks the BBC no longer takes risks”.

Miss Mukherjee said: “I think you’ll find that firefighters, ambulance workers and soldiers are brave, rather than filmmakers. And am I the only one for whom this season leaves a nasty taste in the mouth?”

She said that white working-class people had the same concerns as the middle classes living in Notting Hill in west London.

“A good education for their kids, a good standard of living, enough left over for a nice holiday,” she said in a letter published in Ariel.

“And yet, listening to the patronising conversations in some newsrooms you’d think white, working-class Britain is one step away from anarchy, drinking themselves senseless and pausing only to draw benefits and beat up a few Asian and black people.”

A man accused of killing his wife and abandoning his child at a train station before fleeing to the U.S. was escorted back to New Zealand on Monday and charged in her death.

Nai Yin Xue made an initial court appearance in the death of Anan Liu, 27, whose body was found in the trunk of the family’s car in the northern New Zealand city of Auckland on Sept. 18.

Authorities said that after killing his wife, Xue, 53, fled to Australia. A security camera recorded him apparently leaving his 3-year-old daughter at a train station in Melbourne before he flew to Los Angeles and went into hiding, police said.

Xue, the publisher of a Chinese-language magazine in New Zealand and a well-known figure in the ethnic Chinese community in Auckland, was arrested in Chamblee, Ga., on Feb. 28 after a residents of Chinese descent there recognized him from media coverage.

Xue was deported from the United States for overstaying a 90-day visa. U.S. immigration officers handed over the manacled martial arts expert to New Zealand police when plane landed early Monday.

A woman saved her kitten from a python by punching the snake till it let go.

Brave Ruth Butterworth, 58, from Brisbane in Australia, broke her wrist and suffered two snakes bites in the process - but did get her pet kitten out of the monster python’s jaws.

Days earlier the same snake had killed another of her cats.

She said: “I just started punching the thick part where it was about the size of my arm. I just kept punching until it let go.”

Only when Tuffy was safe did she realise she had broken her wrist and twice been bitten.

She said it was almost dark when she saw the silhouette of the python and realised Tuffy’s fate if she did not act quickly.

She said she had been calling the kitten’s name but it was playing in front of a fence, unaware of the danger before the snake struck.

A MAN was lynched yesterday within hours of a high school pupil appearing in court in connection with the 18 muti-murders in a small Transkei village.

Police last night confirmed the lynching at Madiba near Bizana but could not give further details. Earlier, police arrested 19-year-old Vusi Sixikixa in Mzamba, a small village near Bizana, where the 18 people – all but one of them women – have been butchered since last October.

All the women had their genitals removed, giving authorities strong reason to believe that they were linked to a traditional medicine collector.

Sixikixa appeared in the Bizana Magistrate’s Court looking like a fresh-faced schoolboy.

Hours later came the mob justice.

Fearful community members from the nearby Madiba suspected another man of being connected to the crimes – and killed him.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela confirmed the lynching but said details were still sketchy.

Sixikixa, a Grade 10 pupil at Nombuso Senior Secondary School in the KwaZulu-Natal coastal hamlet of Port Edward, just across the provincial border from Bizana, is facing four charges of murder, attempted murder and rape.

The murder charges relate to last Saturday’s slaying of Madodebunga Yalo, 50, and his daughters, Nandipha, 22, and Nobuhle, 20.

Their bodies were discovered by a family member the next day. The two women had been raped and their genitals hacked off.

The fourth murder count relates to the killing of a 37-year-old woman last month.

The baby-faced teenager locked his eyes on the courtroom floor while a packed gallery stared on from behind.

His case was postponed to March 18 for further investigation and a formal bail application.

He was remanded in custody.

Fatyela said Sixikixa, who lives in Bizana, had been co-operating with police. He said they had found a hammer and two bush knives with blood stains in his home.

It is understood that the police investigation is focusing on the muti market and the possibility that the genitals cut out of the female victims had been sold in Bizana for R300 each time.

Police have also questioned a 24-year-old man and are looking for another to assist them with their investigations.

Women in the area are naturally terrified that they could be next.

“Our lives are in danger,” said one woman who had gathered with friends outside the court. “We can’t even trust our own men.”

Another woman, who works at a restaurant at the Wild Coast Sun casino, said she made sure she only worked day shifts to avoid being an easy target.

Scarlette death: Bartender arrested at Anjuna beach

New Delhi: The Goa police have arrested one man in connection with the murder of 15-year old British teenager Scarlette Keeling.

The accused, a bar tender at the Anjuna beach where Scarlett’s body was found last month, was among the three people detained by the police for questioning. He has been charged with rape. However, the two others have been let off after interrogation.

“It is a definite case of murder. The same person we charged for rape can be charged for murder. He was the last person seen in a compromising position with the girl and the police has got enough evidence to book this man,” says IGP, Goa, Kishan Kumar.

He adds that as the investigations proceed, more arrests are possible.

The arrest on Sunday came a day after Scarlett’s second autopsy suggested she could have been murdered. However sources at the Goa Medical College told CNN-IBN that they had asked the police to investigate the circumstances that lead to Scarlette’s death earlier too. The second autopsy was done after Scarlett’s mother Fiona MacKeown accused the Goa police of a cover-up. For her, this is just the beginning of a battle for justice.

Hundreds of Israeli occupation troops stormed a Palestinian orphanage and a boarding school in the southern West Bank City of Hebron early Thursday, looting large amounts of frozen food, dairy products, clothes, shoes, refrigerators and kitchen equipments, local officials and eyewitnesses said.

The looted material were to be used to feed and cloth as many as seven thousand orphan girls and boys, many of them attending boarding schools run by the Islamic Charitable Society.

According to neighbors, the looting operation started around midnight Wednesday when soldiers stormed the al-Harayek neighborhood in Hebron where the inventory department of the Islamic Charitable Society is located.

“They (Israeli soldiers) forced open the main gate and outer doors and then started loading everything on trucks they brought with them,” said Muhammed Awwad, an official at the Society’s Inventory Department.

“They looted millions of dollars worth of equipments and products, it is an organized robbery, except that it is carried out by the army of a state that claims to be civilized and democratic.”

Awwad said the soldiers seized hundreds of crates of frozen meet, numerous food containers as well as a huge amount of clothes, including Pajamas, underwear, sanitary material, toilet papers, shoes, sport equipment, blankets, mattresses, and handkerchiefs.

“They even looted female children underwear, They robbed us clean.”" Awwad said.

New Delhi: In yet another instance of mob fury, a Dalit boy was beaten up by a mob in UP’s Farrukhabad. This, after the victim, Rupendra, allegedly stole a cycle.

In a chilling reminder of the Bhagalpur mob justice case, this incident too took place right in front of the city police.

Eyewitnesses say the men in khaki did not even attempt to calm the mob or to rescue the victim who was beaten up with his hands tied.

Later, he confessed to stealing the cycle to buy medicines for his daughter who is hospitalised.

On March 3, an agitating mob beat Karmakar Das, arrested for the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl.

He was arrested and taken to the Haldiapur station, but angry locals followed and attacked the police, accusing them of shielding Das.

On Feb 23, a man accused of murder was stoned and nearly beaten to death by a mob in Hajipur, in Vaishali district.

The victim, Ravi Kumar, was dragged away from police custody and brutally assaulted while policemen at the scene remained mute spectators.

Ravi had been arrested for allegedly stabbing one of his friends, Om Prakash.

You take one of these a couple times and a couple of these one time, and then a few of these and some of those and a foot right square in the ass and then we really get worked up and you pay for stealing that bike.

Seasoned cops used to third degree treatment have not been able to digest the signs of brutal torture on the body of the 12-year-old girl tortured by small-time actress Huma Khan and her brother. Horrified by the child’s plight, the police now want people to come forward to rehabilitate the girl, saying a healing touch is essential to ease her trauma.

The victim is still frightened, and a wound inflicted on her tongue has severely impaired her speech.”The little girl’s condition is spine-chilling. She has scars from deep stab wounds all over her body and we cannot even think of the scars these incidents have left on her mind,” Superintendent of Police (Thane Rural) Naval Bajaj told Mumbai Mirror.

According to Bajaj, the girl is in dire need of care and rehabilitation but the police cannot suggest legal adoption, since the girl’s mother is alive.

In fact, Thane Rural police has contacted the Child Helpline of the Union Government, as well as some NGOs for the child’s rehabilitation.

“She has burns from cigarette butts and even her genitals bear stab wounds,” said a Mira Road police station officer, who did not wish to be named.

Medical reports have confirmed that the victim was sexually assaulted.

Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sharada Nikam, who is supervising the investigations in the case, said she has been communicating with the girl and she has opened up a lot.

“We are focusing on the investigation part and collecting evidence. We will soon turn to rehabilitation of the kid. Some NGOs are already in touch with us,” Nikam said.

But while a police officer almost fainted recently on seeing the girl’s wounds, Huma Khan was all smiles when she was brought to the Thane Court on Saturday for her second hearing.

A pregnant Papua New Guinea woman hung from a tree after being accused of sorcery gave birth to her baby while struggling to free herself, local media reports.

Nolan Yekum and her husband Paul were dragged from their house and hung from a tree by fellow tribesmen who accused them of sorcery after the couple’s neighbour suddenly died.

Their ordeal occurred in Kilip village near Banz in Western Highlands Province, PNG’s newspaper The National reported today.

The woman and her newborn baby girl, her third child, were doing well in Mt Hagen Hospital after two weeks in hiding, the report said.

Her husband said men entered their house in the middle of the night with a rope and tied it to their necks, accusing them of sorcery over their neighbour’s death.

They were dragged outside and hung from a tree, he said.

“We managed to loosen the noose to get our feet on the ground … we were able to free ourselves.

“My wife, who was about seven months pregnant, delivered the baby while struggling to free herself.

“It was a painful experience for me and her,” Yekum said.

He said he pleaded with fellow villagers to wait for his neighbour’s post-mortem and he accused local police of failing to act.

The couple vehemently denied practising sorcery.

Indonesian police arrest second man over Australian’s murder

DENPASAR, Indonesia — Indonesian police said Wednesday they had arrested a second man in connection with the murder of an Australian woman stabbed to death on the resort island of Bali earlier this month.

Ahmad Fahrul Rozi was arrested Tuesday in the city of Malang in East Java in connection with the death of 34-year-old Heidi Murphy, Bali police spokesman Anthony Samuel Reniban told AFP.

Rozi, a labourer, had been taken to Bali for questioning, he said.

Another man, Nurianto, was arrested last week after calls from Murphy’s stolen mobile phone were traced to his girlfriend.

“Nurianto told police that he had been asked by this man to help him in his plan to rob Heidi Murphy’s house,” Reniban said.

Murphy was found dead in her villa in the resort area of Canggu on February 10.

Police have said Nurianto faces a charge of carrying out a violent theft with an accomplice that led to death. The crime carries the death penalty.

Nurianto has claimed he had nothing to do with Murphy’s death, telling reporters last week that he had only dropped off Rozi at Murphy’s villa. When he collected him later, he said he saw blood on his clothes.

Police arrest Bali stabbing murder suspect

Indonesian police have arrested a man in East Java who they suspect of murdering Sydney woman Heidi Murphy.

Local officials say Ahmad Fahrul Rosi is being taken to Bali for questioning later today.

Another suspect told police last week that he drove Rosi to Heidi Murphy’s villa the night she was stabbed to death.

Both men have previously served time in prison for theft.

Ms Murphy’s body was found earlier this month with 16 major stab wounds and was cremated in Bali last Friday.

Earthquakes have prompted all kinds of myths and theories over the centuries.

Some said they were tied to hot and dry weather, others said that big earthquakes always hit in the morning.

Recently, an orthodox conservative Israeli member of parliament, Shlomo Benizri, revived a long-lost theory: homosexuality is to blame for earthquakes in Israel.

The Talmud “mentions a number of causes of earthquakes,” Benizri told the Knesset, “one of which is homosexuality, which the Knesset legitimizes.”

“I suggest that the Knesset [parliament] inquire into how it can prevent sodomy and thus save us a lot of earthquakes.”

Benizri’s statement prompted outrage in Israel, a country where homosexuality is becoming more accepted.

“Benizri’s words were not taken out of context, nor were they a slip of the tongue,” Shahar Ilan wrote in the liberal daily Haaretz. “It’s hard not to reach the conclusion that he wanted to raise a storm and he got what he wanted.”

Others were equally put off. “It is sad that in the 21st century, Israel has representatives with ideas belonging to the Middle Ages,” Mike Hammel, chairman of the Israeli branch of Gay Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender, told ABC News.

Hammel said he had sent an official complaint to the Knesset’s speaker.

But Hammel said there is no legal action he can take against Benizri, because he is protected by parliamentary immunity.

It is now be up to the Knesset itself, Hammel said, to “make sure that no group in the Israeli society is being treated with such disrespect and shame”

A 20-year-old man wielding a machete allegedly killed his adoptive parents, their two children and four others in a nighttime attack in the capital, police said Wednesday.

Elias Lagos, a former homeless child adopted four years ago by Olman Sandoval and Xiomara Nolasco, has been charged with multiple homicide, said Commissioner Hector Ivan Mejia, a spokesman for the federal public safety department.

Sandoval and Nolasco, both 39, were found dead Wednesday in their Tegucigalpa home, along with their two other children, Yaneli Yamileth, 15, Olman Gustavo, 5, and housekeeper Dania Wilchez, 22, Mejia said.

The couple’s 13-year-old daughter survived the attack but has been hospitalized with shock.

Lagos was arrested on Wednesday and was being evaluated for mental instability, Mejia said.

On Tuesday night, Lagos allegedly also used a machete to kill three brothers related to Sandoval and Nolasco in San Juan de Flores, 10 miles east of the capital, Mejia said.

He did not say how the brothers — identified as Elvin Antonio, 28, Johan, 18, and Santos Sandoval, 21 — were related to the family.

Lagos, who was abandoned by his biological parents, lived homeless on the streets of Tegucigalpa for about 10 years before Sandoval and Nolasco adopted him.

Indonesian police have arrested a man over the murder of a Sydney woman, who was found stabbed to death in a Bali villa two weeks ago.

Painters discovered the body of 34-year-old Heidi Murphy inside her Bali villa, in north Kuta, on Sunday February 10.

She had up to 37 stab wounds to her back and neck.

Bali Police Chief Paulus Purwoko said the 37-year-old suspect, Nuryanto, was arrested in Tegal, Central Java yesterday.

Police are yet to lay charges.

Nuryanto, one of two suspects wanted over the murder, had admitted stealing the Ms Murphy’s laptop and mobile phone, both of which were missing from her villa, Purwoko said.

“One suspect has been caught,” Purwoko said today.

“He admitted that he did this with one of his friends.

“The motive is still not really clear yet.

“We are still chasing the other suspect.”

Police would accompany the man to Bali today.

Shortly after the murder, Bali police said it was likely Murphy knew her killer because there was no sign of damage to her home.

The US embassy in Belgrade was in flames tonight as a huge anti-Kosovo independence rally turned violent.

As many as 200,000 Serbs gathered in central Belgrade before a group of masked protesters broke into the embassy compound, ripped down an American flag and set fire to the ground floor and a side building.

Armoured vehicles fired tear gas to disperse crowds who were furious that the US and many EU countries have recognised Kosovo’s unilateral decision to breakaway from Serbia.

Attention switched to the unguarded US embassy, which has been closed this week, following a rally lead by the Serbian Prime Minister in the capital.

“As long as we live, Kosovo is Serbia,” Vojislav Kostunica told the crowd in front of the old Yugoslav parliament building.

“We’re not alone in our fight. President Putin is with us,” the Prime Minister said, paying tribute to the Russian leader who has opposed US and European states’ recognition of Kosovo.

“We’ll never give up Kosovo, never!” protesters chanted back, as they waved national flags. A huge banner reading “Kosovo is Serbia” draped the front of the parliament building.

A few people waved the flags of Russia and of Spain, which also refused to recognise Pristina’s secession on Sunday.

Police estimated 150,000 people packed the square, with columns of at least 10,000 more demonstrators filling up nearby boulevards. Eye witnesses reported big crowds elsewhere in the city.

The rally was Serbia’s biggest since protesters gathered outside the same parliament building to oust nationalist autocrat Slobodan Milosevic in October 2000.

In the crowds were many hard-line football hooligans and nationalist Radicals from Serbia’s biggest party, who shouted anti-Albanian slogans.

“Today Kosovo is in all our hearts,” their leader Tomislav Nikolic told the rally.

The rally came as several hundred former Serbian army reservists stormed a crossing post on the border with Kosovo. New border posts have come under sustained attack and been set alight since Pristina’s announcement at the weekend.

Italy today became the latest country to recognise the independence of the breakaway Serbian province.

The Jewish community of Russia is worried over a rumor campaign by nationalist parties claiming that Dmitri Medvedev, President Vladimir Putin’s handpicked successor, is Jewish.

Russian Jewish leaders declined to comment on the rumors officially, fearing to lend them credibility. Off the record, however, one said: “I pray it isn’t true, because it would only make trouble, for him and for us.”

Medvedev, who recently told a Russian weekly that he was baptized into the Russian Orthodox Church at age 23, has not commented on these rumors. But Russian Internet sites are full of reports about his alleged Jewish roots.

The rumors are based in part on the fact that his maternal grandfather’s first name was Veniamin - similar to the Hebrew Binyamin (Benjamin) - while his family name, Shaposhnikov, is sometimes a Jewish name. But beyond that, accusing an electoral rival of being Jewish is a tactic that nationalist parties have employed in the past, both in Russia and in other former communist countries.

Nikolai Bondarik, who heads the St. Petersburg branch of the nationalist Russian Party, told the Moscow Times on Wednesday “we are categorically against him [Medvedev] because he is an ethnic Jew and does not conceal his sympathies toward Judaism.” He also charged that with Medvedev in power, foreigners and Jews would plunder Russia’s natural resources; “tens of thousands” of Israelis would be given key positions in bodies such as “the police, army, and secret services”; and Russia’s relations with the Arab world would be destroyed.

The Russian Party, which is considered anti-Semitic, is not running in the March 2 presidential election. Due to both Putin’s backing and the disqualification of several opposition candidates, Medvedev’s victory in the balloting is virtually certain.

Medvedev visited the Jewish Community center in Moscow during the Hanukkah holiday in December, just three days before Putin anointed him as his preferred successor. Thus all the television reports of the new heir presumptive included shots of him surrounded by leaders of the Jewish community, with Hanukkah candles and a Torah in the background.

Jewish community leaders said that Medvedev’s visit and the good will he radiated during it encouraged them to hope that his presidency will be good for the community. “Medvedev will be wonderful for the Jews,” just as Putin was, declared Israeli-Russian businessman Lev Leviev, who heads the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia.

Yet off the record, several said they feared this good will could create a backlash that would strengthen anti-Semitic currents in Russia.

Asked about Medvedev’s alleged Judaism, they declined comment, beyond noting that he identifies himself as a Russian Orthodox Christian.

“The irony,” said one, “is that we’re doing everything possible to bring Jews back to Judaism, but in this particular case, with the next president, it would be better for the Jewish community if he did not identity himself as Jewish, so as not to draw fire.”

KABUL, Feb. 17 — A bloody suicide bombing shocked Taliban former stronghold Kandahar in south Afghanistan Sunday morning killing at least 80 people and injuring many more, Kandahar’s governor Assadullah Khalid said.

The huge explosion took place at a ground where hundreds of people were gathering to watch dog fighting, among the few pastimes for common Afghans.

“Eighty innocent people have been confirmed dead in the heinous crime committed by enemies today,” Khalid told news reporters.

He said it is too early to count the number of the injured people as they have already been rushed to hospitals.

The official said the Taliban, fighting against Afghan government and foreign troops since it was overthrew six years ago, was behind the deadly attack. However, the Taliban militants did not say they were responsible for the bomb explosion.

Taliban militants during their six-year of reign on 1996-2001 in major parts of Afghanistan banned all kind of popular entertainment activities, including dog fighting, cook fighting, kite flying and wrestling.

Besides, the militants also outlawed cinemas, televisions, music, girl schools and confining women to their homes during the outfit’s rule which was toppled by U.S.-led military invasion in 2001.

Taliban fighters carried out a failed attack against AssadullahKhalid, governor of the restive Kandahar province a week ago while he was on the way to Shah Walikot district.

Last week’s show for Gazprom, the Russian energy giant, at the Kremlin Palace theatre was the first private gig that Deep Purple have ever done in Russia and it caused a big fuss. People evidently don’t realise that private gigs are pretty common. They are what musicians call “tennis and bar mitzvah gigs”.

We had to move around a couple of dates on the Latin American leg of our world tour to make it but the hassle was worth it. I had never been inside the Kremlin before – I had shivered and trembled outside on a number of occasions – and it was great. The atmosphere was like an end-of-term dance.

Security was high but being checked by the guards was a lot less dehumanising than going through most commercial airports. The hospitality was fantastic. They provided my normal two boiled eggs, slices of toast, beers and whisky – and I have to say my eggs were cooked to perfection.

We were there because Dmitry Medvedev, the outgoing chairman of Gazprom (and the presumptive Russian president), is a Deep Purple fan and has been all his life. We have always been big in Russia. When it was still the Soviet Union I remember playing the most amazing places – in the Caucasus, east of the Urals, everywhere.

We would play a stadium for a week and whole villages would turn up with their chickens and goats and make campfires. They wouldn’t know why they were there but there was an event going on and they wanted to be part of it. And when we played they went mental.

A lot of Russian people of a certain generation learnt their English through hearing rock and pop songs on the radio. That’s how Medvedev got into Deep Purple. We used to play songs like Child in Time, which told them that there were people on the outside of their country who felt similarly disenchanted with their leaders. It’s quite refreshing now to see how things have loosened up in Russia.

The gig at the Kremlin was fun but it wasn’t wild. If people aren’t used to going to rock shows they don’t know what the protocol is. It’s quite hard to go mental when you’re in a suit and you’ve just come from the office. But playing for a more reserved crowd is nothing new for us. We’ve played in Japan where they’re very reserved. The applause comes on and off like a tap and they all stand up and sit down at exactly the same time.

The first time we played Malaysia it took a year to get the contract signed because they vetted every single lyric to see if it was offensive. They were worried that we were going to infect their kids with the “British disease”.

I still remember the third clause in our Malaysian contract: “The boys in the band will not allow their hair to fall upon their shoulders.” We all had to wear cowboy hats and head-dresses to keep our hair up.

The Kremlin gig wasn’t as straight as all that. The younger guys and more junior staff were all up on their feet, although they were looking nervously over at their bosses to see whether they could loosen their ties. It was as if they were asking, “How much fun are we allowed to have?” I’m sure I could have had everyone on their feet but I knew Tina Turner was on next and it wouldn’t have been cool to do that.

When we had finished our show, Medvedev and Alexei Miller, the chief executive of Gazprom, came into our dressing room where we had a chat and a couple of drinks. We didn’t get a chance to meet President Vladimir Putin but when the previous acts were on – an opera singer and a dance troupe – he was up there dancing with his tie loosened.

When we met Medvedev he had this stupid grin on his face because he was meeting his favourite band. We had a nice chat but we didn’t talk about politics. All of us in the band have such wildly different opinions on religion and politics that we never get into it.

We did talk to Medvedev about how Russia has changed. He asked what we thought of Moscow now and I told him that it was a cool city – which it is.

You know that rumour about Miller pushing back the deadline for Gazprom’s deal with Ukraine by eight hours, just so he wouldn’t spoil our show? Well, I asked him to do that.

Only joking: that’s the sort of plan you hatch only when you’ve had a lot more vodka.

George Bush winks at indiscriminate killings, further tarring the reputation of the U.S. military.

By forcing repeat combat assignments to Iraq and Afghanistan — and by winking at torture and indiscriminate killings — George W. Bush is degrading the reputation of the U.S. military, turning enlisted soldiers and intelligence officers into murderers and sadists.

For instance, on Feb. 10 at Camp Liberty in Iraq, Army Ranger Sgt. Evan Vela was sentenced by a U.S. military court to 10 years in prison for executing an unarmed Iraqi detainee who — along with his son — had stumbled into a U.S. sniper position last year.

After letting the 17-year-old son go, Vela’s squad leader, Staff Sgt. Michael Hensley ordered Vela to use a 9-millimeter pistol to shoot the father, Genei Nesir Khudair al-Janabi, in the head, an order that Vela carried out. “It was murder, plain and simple,” military prosecutor, Major Charles Kuhfahl, told the court.

Janabi’s son, Mustafa, was allowed to make a statement, explaining how his father’s death had devastated the family and how one of his four younger brothers now avoids their home because he can’t stand the sight of his father’s empty room.

“Please don’t forget about us,” Mustafa told the court.

But Vela’s guilty verdict was a rare case of holding a U.S. soldier accountable in the killing or abusing of an Iraqi. Among the infrequent cases that have been brought, most end in acquittals or convictions only on minor charges.

Last November, for example, another military jury acquitted Hensley in the same murder of Janabi as well as in the killing of two other Iraqi men south of Baghdad in the early days of Bush’s troop “surge.” That jury ruled that Hensley was following the approved “rules of engagement,” though it did convict him of planting an AK-47 on one victim.

Some of Vela’s military comrades complained that it was unfair to single any of them out for punishment because these killings are so common in Iraq.

Vela’s former platoon commander, Sgt. First Class Steven Kipling, said that if all U.S. combat soldiers in Iraq were subjected to the same scrutiny applied to Vela, “we would have thousands” of cases. [NYT, Feb. 11, 2008]

Indeed, the evidence does suggest that the handful of homicide cases from Iraq and Afghanistan that reach military trial represent only a small fraction of the unprovoked killings of locals at the hands of U.S. soldiers.

Gang ‘laughed as teenager was stabbed’

A gang of youths screaming “kill him” chased and stabbed a 16-year-old boy to death, the Old Bailey was told. Kodjo Yenga was ambushed by about 12 children, including two girls, armed with knives and bats, the jury heard.

Kodjo was left on the ground with a single stab wound to the heart when the gang laughed and ran away as passers-by tried to help, the court was told. Six boys, aged between 14 and 17, all deny murdering Kodjo in March last year.

Deepika Kohli was walking along Hammersmith Grove, in west London, when she spotted Kodjo running away. Sir Allan Green QC, for the prosecution, said: “Behind him was a group of 10 black youths. She noticed two girls as well. She could hear a few members of the group shouting ‘catch him, kill him’.”

Two or three members of the group caught him and appeared to stab the back of his jacket, before Kodjo managed to slip their grasp and get away. The group seemed “happy, they were laughing and smiling” and they ran off, Sir Allan told the court.

It appeared Kodjo had agreed to have a one-to-one fight with a member of the MDP gang, jurors heard. When the pair confronted each other, another eight or nine boys, including one with a bull terrier, arrived to back up their gangmate, the jury was told. The case continues.

East Timor Declares Emergency After Attack on Leaders

SYDNEY, Australia — The East Timorese government has declared a state of emergency after Monday’s assassination attempts on the country’s president and prime minister, and Australia is reinforcing its peacekeeping presence in the country to counter the destabilizing effects of the attacks.

President José Ramos-Horta, who was shot at least twice, was in serious but stable condition in an Australian hospital after being operated on for three hours Monday night, a hospital spokesman said Tuesday morning.

“He has a very good chance of a very good recovery, but by the same token, the injuries sustained initially were very serious and shouldn’t in any way be underestimated,” the general manager of the Royal Darwin Hospital, Dr. Len Notaras, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

He said Mr. Ramos-Horta had been shot in the stomach and back and that he had required a transfusion of more than 16 pints of blood to stabilize his condition before he was flown to Australia.

Japanese police arrest US Marine accused of raping 14-year-old girl

TOKYO - A U.S. Marine accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in southern Japan was arrested today, police said, stirring memories of a rape of a Japanese girl by U.S. troops over a decade ago.

Police took custody of Staff Sgt. Tyrone Luther Hadnott, 38, of Camp Courtney in Okinawa, an Okinawa police official said on condition of anonymity citing policy. Hadnott, who has denied the allegations, has not been charged.

Under a mutual security pact, the United States has about 50,000 troops deployed around Japan. Most of them are based on Okinawa and tensions over potential accidents, land use and troop-related crimes are common.

In 1995, the rape of a schoolgirl in Okinawa by three American servicemen sparked large-scale protests. The three served prison terms of six and a half to seven years.

“This is extremely regrettable,” said Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura of Monday’s arrest. Komura said the government asked Washington to tighten discipline among its troop based in Japan to prevent such crimes in the future. Tokyo has made similar requests in the past.

Hadnott, whose hometown has not been identified, is alleged to have offered to take the girl to her home on his motorbike on Sunday, but instead took her to his house, another local police official told The Associated Press.

When the girl started crying, he said he would drive her home, but he is accused of then raping her in a car, the official said, also speaking on condition of anonymity in line with policy.

Hadnott told investigators he forced the girl down and kissed her, but that he did not rape her, the official said.

Lt. Gen. Bruce Wright, commander of U.S. Forces in Japan, said the U.S. was aware of the “serious allegations in Okinawa.”

“(We) are closely monitoring the situation while fully cooperating with Japanese officials,” Wright said in a statement. “If the allegations are true, our hearts are with the victim and family.”

Gov’t deplores alleged rape, urges U.S. to prevent recurrence

TOKYO, Feb. 12 (AP) - (Kyodo) — Japan has officially lodged a protest with the United States over the alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl in Okinawa Prefecture by a U.S. Marine, saying it strongly deplores the incident and calling for thorough measures to prevent similar occurrences, Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura said Tuesday.

Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda described the incident as “not something permissible” during a parliamentary committee session, while Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura expressed concern over its impact on the agreed plan to realign the U.S. military presence in Japan, including the relocation of the U.S. Marine Corps’ Futemma Air Station.

Vice Foreign Minister Mitoji Yabunaka summoned Joseph Donovan, deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Japan, to the ministry on Tuesday afternoon. Donovan told reporters afterward, “I said that this is an extremely regrettable case and that we take this very, very seriously.”

Three Soweto schoolboys were arrested yesterday in connection with the rape and murder of a 44-year-old woman on Youth Day last year.

The police in Jabulani arrested the boys, aged between 16 and 18, at their different schools – Goudveld Senior Secondary School in Langlaagte, Johannesburg, Letare High School and Jabulani Technical College.

The half-naked body of Ntombikayise Mwelase was discovered by her friend Phumla Zulu, 41, on June 17. Mwelase, who was separated from her husband, lived alone at the time.

Police said Mwelase had been raped and then strangled.

Inspector Kay Makhubela said that following the police investigation, a 17-year-old youth was eventually linked to Mwelase’s case through fingerprints.

The 17-year-old has a pending case of housebreaking and theft in Meadowlands, police said.

A warrant for his arrest was issued after he failed to appear in court on several occasions. Makhubela said police swooped on the 17-year-old’s school after he had initially resisted attempts by his parents to hand him over.

“The parents informed us where his school was and when we got there he told us who he was with on the day of the murder. He said he only raped the woman but did not kill her,” Makhubela said.

The youths are expected to appear in the Protea magistrate’s court today.

A FORMER head of Pakistan’s military intelligence says Australia’s troop deployment in Afghanistan is doomed to failure and has urged the Government to withdraw its forces as quickly as possible.

Hamid Gul, the retired general who was the director-general of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate when it supported Afghan militias against the Soviet occupation of their country, believes Western troops will be forced to leave Afghanistan by the end of next year.

“There comes a time in every war when the scales start tilting,” Mr Gul said. “I think the foreign presence in Afghanistan is at a tipping point now. Even if they are able to stretch it out, next year will be the last campaign year of the occupying forces. Then they will go - they will have to go.”

Mr Gul said it was not “wise” for Australia to maintain its troop commitment. “Of course it’s very difficult to say no to America, but [Australia should] find a way out like Japan … and many others.”

More than six years after the US-led invasion, the issue of security came to a head this week when the Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, threatened to pull out Canada’s 2500 troops early next year unless NATO sent in more soldiers.

The US said it would press its European NATO allies to send more troops to Afghanistan’s violent south, but the Pentagon has said it will not commit any more of its own forces there.

The Taliban were toppled by the invasion in late 2001 but have recently made an explosive comeback, despite the presence of 50,000 foreign troops under the command of NATO and the US military, backed by 120,000 Afghan security forces.

Australia has about 1000 troops stationed mainly in the south, making it the largest non-NATO contributor. The Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, has pledged to keep Australian troops in Afghanistan.

But Mr Gul says Western forces face a determined opposition that will not give up.”As a soldier I can tell you there is no army, no matter how strong, that can prevail against a nation that decides to fight. You will never, never prevail,” he said.

Since retirement Mr Gul has been involved with Jamaat-i-Islami, a relatively moderate Islamic political party in Pakistan, and was among a group of retired army officers who last week called on the President, Pervez Musharraf, to stand down.

Mr Gul concedes that a withdrawal from Afghanistan by the US and its allies would probably hand control of much of the country to the Taliban. But he said the security situation in his own country would improve significantly if US forces were to depart Pakistan.

The Afghan Defence Minister, Abdul Rahim Wardak, has said Kabul expects its allies to help expand Afghanistan’s security forces. “The only sustainable way to secure this country in an enduring way is to enable the Afghans themselves to be able to defend this country,” he said.

Women-Only Buses in Mexico City

Groping and verbal harassment is an exasperating reality for women using public transportation in this sprawling capital, where 22 million passengers cram onto subways and buses each day. Some men treat women so badly that the subway system has long had ladies-only cars during rush hour, with police segregating the sexes on the platforms.

But that hasn’t helped women forced to rely on packed buses, by far the city’s most-used form of public transportation — until this week.

Acting on complaints from women’s groups, the city rolled out “ladies only” buses, complete with pink signs in the windshields to wave off the men.

As word spreads about the buses, the women seem delighted, while some men forced to wait a few minutes longer have shown their anger. Still others have stumbled on board despite the signs, much to their embarrassment.

On Thursday, passengers on one of the female-only buses spent most of their trip down the capital’s tree-lined Reforma Avenue chatting or putting on makeup, instead of fighting off unwanted male attention.

When a man mistakenly climbed aboard, the women immediately began teasing him and shouting that he should read the “ladies only” sign.

“He’s a gentleman! He should get off,” shouted Yolanda Altamirano, a 64-year-old office janitor.

The man blushed and mumbled an apology, then ignored the taunts until he got off several stops later.

“Now he knows how women feel,” Altamirano said, unapologetic for giving him a hard time. Mexico City’s female-only buses run along three busy routes throughout the day for now, but the city plans to add them to 15 other routes by April, said Ariadna Montiel, who directs the public bus system.

“Women were asking for this service because of the sexual harassment, especially groping and leering,” Montiel said.

And while some men have complained that they have to wait longer for a bus, she said the women are thrilled: “The women are really happy and we have been getting a lot of e-mail and letters from them.”

Juliana Romero, a 49-year-old secretary, said not riding with men is “fantastic.”

“When the bus is packed, there will inevitably be a lecherous man who will bother you,” she said.

Women-only buses or subways have been rolling for years in India, Brazil, Japan and other countries. Mexico City finally took the action as part of a growing responsiveness to complaints about discrimination against women, Montiel said.

While only seven female public bus users complained last year, she said the real number of offenses was probably much higher, because women rarely protest openly against sexual harassment.

Some women, like Maria Elena Sanchez, have learned to take matters into their own hands. A 47-year-old office messenger who uses public transportation all day, said she carries a sewing pin for protection.

“I always carry the pin so I can defend myself from abusive men,” she said — adding that she’s had to use it twice this month alone.

Traveling only with women, she said, makes her feel more secure and allows her to relax a bit on the way to work.

“I don’t think I will use the pin on these buses,” she said, giggling.

US Army Unable to Confront Iran

US soldiers are not able to stand against Iranian combatants, a senior Iranian commander said in the wake of massive propaganda by western media over an alleged confrontation between Iranian and US navy vessels in the Persian Gulf earlier this month.

Lieutenant commander of the General Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces said that the hues and cries made by the western media about the event was aimed at portraying Iran as a threat to world peace and security on the verge of the visit to the region by US President George Bush.

He said that the prompt action, including presentation of authentic documents and footages of the incident, by Iranian officials proved the baseless and untrue nature of the US allegations, following to which “Americans were obliged to acknowledge that their reports were not true.”

General Masoud Jazayeri identified relevant reports by western media as a part of psychological warfare against the Islamic Republic, saying that the report released by the western media on the alleged confrontation between the Iranian and US navy vessels in the Strait of Hormuz was carried out in the form of a premeditated scenario.

He also said that the US has repeatedly devised and practiced such plots against the Islamic Republic, a major part of which have eventually turned into a scandal for the White House as it had been obliged to reject its earlier reports, similar to the recent Persian Gulf confrontation report.

The official reminded that the US had first used archive pictures and done forgery to convince the world people that its warships had been swarmed by Iranian boats, while it had to dismiss its allegations later.

Yet, what seems to be interesting in this story is that the US soldiers showed a feeling of fright similar to the British marines who were detained by Iran several months ago after trespassing Iranian borders, he said.

Jazayeri reminded that in the earlier case, an Iranian boat steered by a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) stopped the British boat with a large number of fully-armed British soldiers and made them surrender.

“…in that case too the British soldiers were directed towards our coasts while they felt completely hopeless and scared,” he added.

“Evidence has revealed that no American soldier or military personnel is able to stand against Iranian combatants,” Jazayeri reiterated.

A senior Iranian official says Russia will deliver the sophisticated S-300 air missile defense system to Iran, despite US opposition.

“Russia will provide Iran with the S-300 missile system under a deal signed between the two countries,” Iranian Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar said Wednesday.

“The exact date of the delivery will be announced later,” Mohammad-Najjar added.

The S-300 is a long range surface-to-air missile system that was developed as a defense system against aircraft and cruise missiles for the Soviet military.

Some types of the S-300 can intercept ballistic missiles.

Russia has previously delivered the Tor M1 short-range air defense missile system to Iran.

A meeting of the Russian-Iranian intergovernmental commission on military-technical cooperation took place n Tehran at the end of last week. The commission discussed leasing Russian helicopters and deliveries of modified RD-33 engines for Iranian jet fighters. Head of the Federal Military-Technical Cooperation Service Mikhail Dmitriev stated that cooperation with Iran would continue with the goal of maintaining the balance of power in the region.

The engines will power multipurpose supersonic fighter jets developed in Iran to replace American F-5 models obtained in the 1970s and the Iranian modification of them, called the Azarakhsh (Lightening). The deal was discussed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Iran in October. A modification of the Ka-32 helicopter is also being considered. Iran began negotiations on the serial assembly of the Ka-32 two years ago, but those negotiations were discontinued. In 2006 and 2007, Russia supplied Iran with Tor-M1 air defense systems to defend the atomic power plant being built at Bushehr by the Russians. Talks on deliveries of S-300V air defense systems and MiG-29 and Su-30 fighter jets were also discontinued about a year ago.

A delay in the U.S.-Iranian war is implied by the recent publication of a U.S. intelligence report indicating that Iran closed down its military nuclear program in 2003. Russia is clearly taking advantage of the situation to sell as many weapons as possible. Dmitriev stated that “Russia and Iran are strengthening stability in the region.” He added that “We are talking about defensive types of weapons… Iran has never asked for and Russia would never give Iran offensive weapons to encourage any, conditionally speaking, aggression against anyone.”

It’s common knowledge, he reveals, CIA, Mossad behind terror attacks

Former Italian President Francesco Cossiga, who revealed the existence of Operation Gladio, has told Italy’s oldest and most widely read newspaper that the 9-11 terrorist attacks were run by the CIA and Mossad, and that this was common knowledge among global intelligence agencies.

In what translates awkwardly into English, Cossiga told the newspaper Corriere della Sera:

“All the [intelligence services] of America and Europe…know well that the disastrous attack has been planned and realized from the Mossad, with the aid of the Zionist world in order to put under accusation the Arabic countries and in order to induce the western powers to take part … in Iraq [and] Afghanistan.”

Cossiga was elected president of the Italian Senate in July 1983 before winning a landslide election to become president of the country in 1985, and he remained until 1992.

Cossiga’s tendency to be outspoken upset the Italian political establishment, and he was forced to resign after revealing the existence of, and his part in setting up, Operation Gladio. This was a rogue intelligence network under NATO auspices that carried out bombings across Europe in the 1960s, 1970s and ’80s. Gladio’s specialty was to carry out what they termed “false flag” operations—terror attacks that were blamed on their domestic and geopolitical opposition.

In March 2001, Gladio agent Vincenzo Vinciguerra stated, in sworn testimony, “You had to attack civilians, the people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game. The reason was quite simple: to force … the public to turn to the state to ask for greater security.”

Cossiga first expressed his doubts about 9-11 in 2001, and is quoted by 9-11 researcherWebster Tarpley saying “The mastermind of the attack must have been a sophisticated mind, provided with ample means not only to recruit fanatic kamikazes, but also highly specialized personnel. “I add one thing: it could not be accomplished without infiltrations in the radar and flight security personnel.”

Coming from a widely respected former head of state, Cossiga’s assertion that the 9-11 attacks were an inside job and that this is common knowledge among global intelligence agencies is illuminating. It is one more eye-opening confirmation that has not been mentioned by America’s propaganda machine in print or on TV. Nevertheless, because of his experience and status in the world, Cossiga cannot be discounted as a crackpot.

After an IED attack killed five members of 2nd Platoon Charlie 1-26 in northeast Baghdad, members of the unit gathered and determined that they could no longer function professionally. Several soldiers feared that their anger and want for revenge would result in a massacre of innocent civilians, and thus decided to stage a revolt against the orders of their commanders.

Charlie 1-26 was the hardest hit unit in Iraq so far, losing 14 soldiers in 12 months. Kelly Kennedy of the Army Times, who was embedded with Charlie Company, recalled the hostility the unit had towards Iraqis living under US occupation:

When the IED, the roadside bomb, went off, it was so close to one of the Iraqi police stations that they should have been able to see somebody burying that. It was right in front of somebody’s house, and nobody said anything. Nobody said to these guys, “Listen, there’s a bomb here. We’re worried about you,” even though they had been going out and patrolling and doing what they were supposed to be doing, in their minds. So when that IED went off and killed their five friends, they’re in–you have to understand, they’ve been living together for a year like brothers in the basement of this old palace. And it’s–they’re right on top of each other and going out and taking care of each other on the battlefield, daily firefights. And so, they’re closer probably than anyone could be. And when they lost their five men, they–I think they gave up on the Iraqi people.

If the Iraqi people weren’t willing to fight for them, then what was the point? And they were so angry. They just wanted to go out and take out the whole city. They didn’t understand why they couldn’t finish up what they call the war, and the whole idea of counterinsurgency is that you’re supposed to be building relationships, but they’re trying to build relationships with people who obviously aren’t that concerned about them. So this idea of a massacre was just–they were just so angry, they could barely contain it anymore.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran has hanged three men and a woman, a newspaper reported on Thursday, in the latest of a series of executions that have drawn criticism from rights groups and European states.

Two of the men and the woman had been convicted of murder, while the third man was executed for rape.

Murder, rape, adultery, and drug trafficking are among crimes punishable by death under Iran’s Islamic sharia law, imposed since the 1979 revolution.

“The four convicted people, including a woman, were hanged on Wednesday morning inside the Evin prison in Tehran,” said the state-run newspaper, Iran.

It said that Ghasem Yaghoubi had kidnapped and raped 19 young boys in a year.

Amnesty International has protested to Iran over the number of executions, which according to its report in April had doubled to at least 177 people in 2006.

The number of executions, many in public, has risen since July with the launch of a summer crackdown on “immoral behaviour”. During the campaign, police have arrested dozens of drug addicts, smugglers, rapists and murderers.

The crackdown has also included an initiative to confront women who fail to adhere to Iran’s strict Islamic dress codes.

Before the latest series of hangings that began in July, Amnesty said at least 124 people had been put to death in 2007. Based on those figures, Iran has now executed more than 150 people so far this year. Continued…

Ex-CIA official: Israel will attack Iran on its own

“I came back from a trip to Israel in November convinced that Israel would attack Iran,” Bruce Riedel, a former CIA official and senior adviser to three US presidents, George W. Bush among them, told the American Newsweek magazine in an article published Friday.

Citing conversations he had in Israel with officials in Mossad and the Israeli defense establishment, Riedel concluded that “Israel is not going to allow its nuclear monopoly to be threatened.”

While some US experts doubt Israel’s ability to tackle Iran alone, David Albright, of the Institute for Science and International Security in Washington, was quoted by Newsweek as saying that although information on the exact location of Iran’s nuclear facility is incomplete, Israel’s air strike on an alleged Syrian nuclear facility on September 6, widely discussed in foreign media outlets, could be seen as a test run for any future strike on Iran’s facilities, as well as a direct warning to Teheran.

Riedel told the magazine his impression that Israel would venture a strike on Iran on its own was formed before the publication of the joint US intelligence agencies’ report, the National Intelligence Estimate (NIE). “This [the NIE] makes it [a strike on Iran] even more likely,” he said.

Since the publication of the NIE, which reversed a previous American assessment by concluding that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003, leaders worldwide have been adjusting their publicly stated positions on the Iranian nuclear issue.

Even inside the US, President Bush attempted some damage control by stating a day after the report’s publication that “Iran was dangerous, Iran is dangerous and Iran will be dangerous.”

In Israel, responses to the report ranged from subtle criticism of the report’s conclusions to outright slamming of the US intelligence community’s capabilities, so much so that on last Sunday’s cabinet meeting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert instructed his ministers to refrain from commenting any further on the report.
