FBI arrests two Texas men (Texas men?) in relation to Troy couple’s slaying

TROY — Two more suspects will face charges in the alleged contract killings of a Troy couple, police said Saturday.

Narayan Thadani and Douglas Tabor, both Texas residents, were arrested late Friday night in the Houston area by FBI agents on charges of conspiracy to commit murder in conjunction. They are suspects in the deaths of Birj Mohan Chhabra, 65, and his wife Aasha Chhabra, 56. The couple was killed Tuesday in their home on Delaware Drive.

“These new arrests are important elements in the case against our suspects,” said Troy Police Lt. Gerard Scherlinck on Saturday.

Police said Miguel Angel Servando-Ortiz, 40, of Katy, Texas, and Nelson Oswaldo Mendoza, 34, of Houston traveled to Troy to carry out the murder-for-hire. They were arrested Tuesday by Taylor police during a traffic stop in which blood-stained clothing, a semi-automatic handgun and a map to the victims’ home were found inside their vehicle.

The pair were arraigned Friday in Troy on first degree premeditated murder and firearm charges. A preliminary exam is scheduled for March 27 in Troy District Court. Both are being held in the Oakland County Jail without bond. Servando-Ortiz is in the United States illegally, according to federal authorities.

Scherlinck said Thadani and Tabor are awaiting an appearance before a federal magistrate in Houston. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Detroit and Detroit FBI Office anticipate their extradition to Detroit to face federal charges in this case Monday, he said.

“This will not impede the prosecution for state offenses, although our suspects may also face federal charges,” he said.

Thadani is a longtime family friend of the Chhabra’s, against whom they had filed suit over the use of $1.5 million in funds associated with Aasha Chhabra’s family estate in India. Tabor is an associate of Thadani’s, Scherlinck said.

The News has reported how Servando-Ortiz and Mendoza, both El Salvador nationals, were allegedly promised $100,000 to kill the couple, according to prosecutors.

Both victims were found in the second-floor bedroom of their home. Both were killed by a single contact gunshot wound to the head.

Aasha Chhabra had multiple sclerosis and was largely confined to bed or a wheelchair. Her husband was a computer programming consultant and yoga instructor.

Aasha Chhabra apparently relied on Thadani’s help in liquidating assets left to her in India by her parents. Allegations contained within a still pending 2006 lawsuit show Aasha Chhabra alleged Thadani moved her funds to his own account — without her knowledge or permission — and refused her demands to return them to her, along with her passport, green card and ID.

A senior reporter at the BBC has attacked the corporation’s season of programmes about the white working class.

Sarah Mukherjee, the environment correspondent, who grew up on a predominantly white council estate in Essex, said that BBC2’s White season risked reinforcing the stereotype of the white working class as violent and racist alcoholics who live on benefits.

The reporter, who is Asian, made the comments after Richard Klein (jewboy), the BBC’s commissioning editor for documentaries, said that the corporation had been “brave” to make a series of programmes about the “prejudices, alienation, fears and confusion” of the white working class.

He said in an interview with the BBC’s in-house magazine Ariel that the season should be watched by anyone “who thinks the BBC no longer takes risks”.

Miss Mukherjee said: “I think you’ll find that firefighters, ambulance workers and soldiers are brave, rather than filmmakers. And am I the only one for whom this season leaves a nasty taste in the mouth?”

She said that white working-class people had the same concerns as the middle classes living in Notting Hill in west London.

“A good education for their kids, a good standard of living, enough left over for a nice holiday,” she said in a letter published in Ariel.

“And yet, listening to the patronising conversations in some newsrooms you’d think white, working-class Britain is one step away from anarchy, drinking themselves senseless and pausing only to draw benefits and beat up a few Asian and black people.”

A man accused of killing his wife and abandoning his child at a train station before fleeing to the U.S. was escorted back to New Zealand on Monday and charged in her death.

Nai Yin Xue made an initial court appearance in the death of Anan Liu, 27, whose body was found in the trunk of the family’s car in the northern New Zealand city of Auckland on Sept. 18.

Authorities said that after killing his wife, Xue, 53, fled to Australia. A security camera recorded him apparently leaving his 3-year-old daughter at a train station in Melbourne before he flew to Los Angeles and went into hiding, police said.

Xue, the publisher of a Chinese-language magazine in New Zealand and a well-known figure in the ethnic Chinese community in Auckland, was arrested in Chamblee, Ga., on Feb. 28 after a residents of Chinese descent there recognized him from media coverage.

Xue was deported from the United States for overstaying a 90-day visa. U.S. immigration officers handed over the manacled martial arts expert to New Zealand police when plane landed early Monday.

Scarlette death: Bartender arrested at Anjuna beach

New Delhi: The Goa police have arrested one man in connection with the murder of 15-year old British teenager Scarlette Keeling.

The accused, a bar tender at the Anjuna beach where Scarlett’s body was found last month, was among the three people detained by the police for questioning. He has been charged with rape. However, the two others have been let off after interrogation.

“It is a definite case of murder. The same person we charged for rape can be charged for murder. He was the last person seen in a compromising position with the girl and the police has got enough evidence to book this man,” says IGP, Goa, Kishan Kumar.

He adds that as the investigations proceed, more arrests are possible.

The arrest on Sunday came a day after Scarlett’s second autopsy suggested she could have been murdered. However sources at the Goa Medical College told CNN-IBN that they had asked the police to investigate the circumstances that lead to Scarlette’s death earlier too. The second autopsy was done after Scarlett’s mother Fiona MacKeown accused the Goa police of a cover-up. For her, this is just the beginning of a battle for justice.

New Delhi: In yet another instance of mob fury, a Dalit boy was beaten up by a mob in UP’s Farrukhabad. This, after the victim, Rupendra, allegedly stole a cycle.

In a chilling reminder of the Bhagalpur mob justice case, this incident too took place right in front of the city police.

Eyewitnesses say the men in khaki did not even attempt to calm the mob or to rescue the victim who was beaten up with his hands tied.

Later, he confessed to stealing the cycle to buy medicines for his daughter who is hospitalised.

On March 3, an agitating mob beat Karmakar Das, arrested for the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl.

He was arrested and taken to the Haldiapur station, but angry locals followed and attacked the police, accusing them of shielding Das.

On Feb 23, a man accused of murder was stoned and nearly beaten to death by a mob in Hajipur, in Vaishali district.

The victim, Ravi Kumar, was dragged away from police custody and brutally assaulted while policemen at the scene remained mute spectators.

Ravi had been arrested for allegedly stabbing one of his friends, Om Prakash.

A man accused of dismembering a friend and filling his grandmother’s freezer with the body parts last year, is now being charged with two dozen counts of sexual assault against a fellow prisoner at the Anchorage jail. 22-year-old Elmer Seetot was arraigned this week on 28 charges, including 23 counts of rape.

The assaults occurred over a period of five consecutive days in November and December, according to the charging document. Barry Jack, Seetot’s victim, shared a cell in the Echo Mod unit, known officially as the Anchorage Correctional Complex West.

47-year-old Jack from Valdez, is in jail on theft and forgery charges. The days of the attacks, Jack said he feared for his life. Seetot’s promise to kill Jack kept him from informing the guards of the ordeal he faced every night. “I was terrified,” he said.

Jack’s attacker, as described by Jack, is roughly the same height, but “buffed out.”

Soft-spoken and suffering from a bipolar disorder, Jack was unable to report the attack he said, until he was moved to a safer section of the prison where he knew and trusted one of the correctional officiers.

Jack said he has undergone testing for sexually transimitted diseases and Standing Together Against Rape has offered him counseling.

Seasoned cops used to third degree treatment have not been able to digest the signs of brutal torture on the body of the 12-year-old girl tortured by small-time actress Huma Khan and her brother. Horrified by the child’s plight, the police now want people to come forward to rehabilitate the girl, saying a healing touch is essential to ease her trauma.

The victim is still frightened, and a wound inflicted on her tongue has severely impaired her speech.”The little girl’s condition is spine-chilling. She has scars from deep stab wounds all over her body and we cannot even think of the scars these incidents have left on her mind,” Superintendent of Police (Thane Rural) Naval Bajaj told Mumbai Mirror.

According to Bajaj, the girl is in dire need of care and rehabilitation but the police cannot suggest legal adoption, since the girl’s mother is alive.

In fact, Thane Rural police has contacted the Child Helpline of the Union Government, as well as some NGOs for the child’s rehabilitation.

“She has burns from cigarette butts and even her genitals bear stab wounds,” said a Mira Road police station officer, who did not wish to be named.

Medical reports have confirmed that the victim was sexually assaulted.

Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sharada Nikam, who is supervising the investigations in the case, said she has been communicating with the girl and she has opened up a lot.

“We are focusing on the investigation part and collecting evidence. We will soon turn to rehabilitation of the kid. Some NGOs are already in touch with us,” Nikam said.

But while a police officer almost fainted recently on seeing the girl’s wounds, Huma Khan was all smiles when she was brought to the Thane Court on Saturday for her second hearing.

JEW YORK — A cab driver who made headlines this week when he claimed that a passenger had abandoned a baby in his car was arrested Saturday and charged with making up the tale.

Police said the driver, Klever Sailema, was part of a scheme by an overwhelmed Bronx family to abandon the child, who had been born to a 14-year-old girl.

The family’s ill-conceived plot to turn the child over the city collapsed late Friday night and several people were under arrest early Saturday.

The baby’s mother has also been identified, but will likely not face charges because of her age, police said.

Investigators were still hunting for the child’s father, who was believed to be 27 years old, said Police Department spokesman Paul Browne.

New York State Federation Of Taxi Drivers Spokesman Fernando Mateo, who had championed Sailema as a hero earlier in the week, said he felt betrayed, but wouldn’t condemn the cabbie.

“I am looking at a desperate man who was trying to help a desperate family,” Mateo said.

The arrests were a stunning development in a case that had captivated the city after the adorable baby’s pictures were published in newspapers and broadcast on TV.

Sailema briefly became a media darling after he dropped the baby off at a Queens fire station Thursday, saying the child, who was about 6 months old, had been left in his car by a stranger.

The cabbie told investigators his fare was a nervous-looking man who had gotten in carrying the baby and a diaper bag, then asked the driver to pull over so he could make a phone call, and promptly fled.

Sailema even provided enough detail about the man’s appearance that police released a sketch of the suspect. He repeated his tale to reporters at a news conference on Friday.

Police now say that Sailema was in on the abandonment plot from the start.

Woman delivers baby while hanging from tree

A pregnant Papua New Guinea woman hung from a tree after being accused of sorcery gave birth to her baby while struggling to free herself, local media reports.

Nolan Yekum and her husband Paul were dragged from their house and hung from a tree by fellow tribesmen who accused them of sorcery after the couple’s neighbour suddenly died.

Their ordeal occurred in Kilip village near Banz in Western Highlands Province, PNG’s newspaper The National reported today.

The woman and her newborn baby girl, her third child, were doing well in Mt Hagen Hospital after two weeks in hiding, the report said.

Her husband said men entered their house in the middle of the night with a rope and tied it to their necks, accusing them of sorcery over their neighbour’s death.

They were dragged outside and hung from a tree, he said.

“We managed to loosen the noose to get our feet on the ground … we were able to free ourselves.

“My wife, who was about seven months pregnant, delivered the baby while struggling to free herself.

“It was a painful experience for me and her,” Yekum said.

He said he pleaded with fellow villagers to wait for his neighbour’s post-mortem and he accused local police of failing to act.

The couple vehemently denied practising sorcery.

Indonesian police arrest second man over Australian’s murder

DENPASAR, Indonesia — Indonesian police said Wednesday they had arrested a second man in connection with the murder of an Australian woman stabbed to death on the resort island of Bali earlier this month.

Ahmad Fahrul Rozi was arrested Tuesday in the city of Malang in East Java in connection with the death of 34-year-old Heidi Murphy, Bali police spokesman Anthony Samuel Reniban told AFP.

Rozi, a labourer, had been taken to Bali for questioning, he said.

Another man, Nurianto, was arrested last week after calls from Murphy’s stolen mobile phone were traced to his girlfriend.

“Nurianto told police that he had been asked by this man to help him in his plan to rob Heidi Murphy’s house,” Reniban said.

Murphy was found dead in her villa in the resort area of Canggu on February 10.

Police have said Nurianto faces a charge of carrying out a violent theft with an accomplice that led to death. The crime carries the death penalty.

Nurianto has claimed he had nothing to do with Murphy’s death, telling reporters last week that he had only dropped off Rozi at Murphy’s villa. When he collected him later, he said he saw blood on his clothes.

Police arrest Bali stabbing murder suspect

Indonesian police have arrested a man in East Java who they suspect of murdering Sydney woman Heidi Murphy.

Local officials say Ahmad Fahrul Rosi is being taken to Bali for questioning later today.

Another suspect told police last week that he drove Rosi to Heidi Murphy’s villa the night she was stabbed to death.

Both men have previously served time in prison for theft.

Ms Murphy’s body was found earlier this month with 16 major stab wounds and was cremated in Bali last Friday.

Former Priest Sentenced On Fraud Conviction

A former Roman Catholic priest was sentenced to 63 months in prison Thursday for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from two rural Virginia parishes.

Rodney Rodis, 51, pleaded guilty to mail fraud and money laundering in October in the theft of more than $600,000 in donations from St. Jude Church and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Louisa County between 2002 and 2006.

U.S. District Judge Richard Williams issued the maximum punishment under federal sentencing guidelines and gave Rodis credit for time he had already served since last May. Williams also ordered Rodis to repay the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond more than $591,000 and is requiring him to meet with federal immigration officials for possible deportation after his prison term ends.

If the pastor of Park Hill United Methodist Church ever needs a reminder of his congregation’s diversity, all he has to do is teach a sermon to the children.

“When the children go up for their lesson, it’s like the United Nations,” said Senior Pastor John Thompson. “They come from so many different backgrounds.”

However, it wasn’t too long ago that the church only had one type of member: Caucasian.

“The church was all-white when it started,” said Thompson.

Park Hill United Methodist Church was founded in 1911. It wasn’t until 1961, that the push began to make Park Hill the first desegregated church in Denver.

“Dr. Carlton Babbs was the pastor at the time who, along with all the other pastors in the community, led them in preaching about integration,” Thompson said. “They all selected one Sunday when they would integrate all of the churches in Park Hill. For some reason, after all of those years, this is the only one that has been consistent.”

Among the 750-member congregation, there are now seven African nations represented. The members get even more diverse from there.

“They are white. They are European. They are Caribbean. They are Korean. It’s all across the spectrum,” said Thompson.

Achieving diversity hasn’t been easy. Thompson says, in the process of integration, about 1,000 members left the church.

A 20-year-old man wielding a machete allegedly killed his adoptive parents, their two children and four others in a nighttime attack in the capital, police said Wednesday.

Elias Lagos, a former homeless child adopted four years ago by Olman Sandoval and Xiomara Nolasco, has been charged with multiple homicide, said Commissioner Hector Ivan Mejia, a spokesman for the federal public safety department.

Sandoval and Nolasco, both 39, were found dead Wednesday in their Tegucigalpa home, along with their two other children, Yaneli Yamileth, 15, Olman Gustavo, 5, and housekeeper Dania Wilchez, 22, Mejia said.

The couple’s 13-year-old daughter survived the attack but has been hospitalized with shock.

Lagos was arrested on Wednesday and was being evaluated for mental instability, Mejia said.

On Tuesday night, Lagos allegedly also used a machete to kill three brothers related to Sandoval and Nolasco in San Juan de Flores, 10 miles east of the capital, Mejia said.

He did not say how the brothers — identified as Elvin Antonio, 28, Johan, 18, and Santos Sandoval, 21 — were related to the family.

Lagos, who was abandoned by his biological parents, lived homeless on the streets of Tegucigalpa for about 10 years before Sandoval and Nolasco adopted him.

A Jacksonville doctor was recently arrested and is facing drug charges after police said he traded prescription drugs for sex (like cialis or viagra) .

According to investigators, 70-year-old Dr. Benjamin Malalang admitted to them that he has been trading prescriptions for sexual favors.

Malalang, who specializes in acupuncture, is now accused of serious drug charges.

“This doctor was trading sex for Oxycontin prescriptions,” said Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Chief John Hartley.

Investigators said about a week ago they got a tip from a woman who said the doctor would invite her to his Arlington home or to his office for her to perform a sex act on him and afterward he would write and give her a prescription in her name for Oxycontin.

On Thursday, police said they set up a sting and sent the woman and an undercover officer to Malalang. They said both agreed to the sex for prescription deal.

The sting resulted in Malalang’s arrest.

According to a police report, “He admitted to have sex in exchange for Oxycontin prescriptions for the last six months to a year.”

Hartley said the doctor admitted that there are at least four or five other women that had the same agreement with him.

Police continue to search for other possible victims, saying the alleged sex-for-drug deals could end in death.

“We’d like to get the message out to the family members and friends that this is a killer. It’s not hard to get addicted and it’s not hard to overdose,” Hartley said.

Indonesian police have arrested a man over the murder of a Sydney woman, who was found stabbed to death in a Bali villa two weeks ago.

Painters discovered the body of 34-year-old Heidi Murphy inside her Bali villa, in north Kuta, on Sunday February 10.

She had up to 37 stab wounds to her back and neck.

Bali Police Chief Paulus Purwoko said the 37-year-old suspect, Nuryanto, was arrested in Tegal, Central Java yesterday.

Police are yet to lay charges.

Nuryanto, one of two suspects wanted over the murder, had admitted stealing the Ms Murphy’s laptop and mobile phone, both of which were missing from her villa, Purwoko said.

“One suspect has been caught,” Purwoko said today.

“He admitted that he did this with one of his friends.

“The motive is still not really clear yet.

“We are still chasing the other suspect.”

Police would accompany the man to Bali today.

Shortly after the murder, Bali police said it was likely Murphy knew her killer because there was no sign of damage to her home.

KABUL, Feb. 17 — A bloody suicide bombing shocked Taliban former stronghold Kandahar in south Afghanistan Sunday morning killing at least 80 people and injuring many more, Kandahar’s governor Assadullah Khalid said.

The huge explosion took place at a ground where hundreds of people were gathering to watch dog fighting, among the few pastimes for common Afghans.

“Eighty innocent people have been confirmed dead in the heinous crime committed by enemies today,” Khalid told news reporters.

He said it is too early to count the number of the injured people as they have already been rushed to hospitals.

The official said the Taliban, fighting against Afghan government and foreign troops since it was overthrew six years ago, was behind the deadly attack. However, the Taliban militants did not say they were responsible for the bomb explosion.

Taliban militants during their six-year of reign on 1996-2001 in major parts of Afghanistan banned all kind of popular entertainment activities, including dog fighting, cook fighting, kite flying and wrestling.

Besides, the militants also outlawed cinemas, televisions, music, girl schools and confining women to their homes during the outfit’s rule which was toppled by U.S.-led military invasion in 2001.

Taliban fighters carried out a failed attack against AssadullahKhalid, governor of the restive Kandahar province a week ago while he was on the way to Shah Walikot district.

Husband Charged in Cary Woman’s Slaying - Harish Purushottamdas Patel

Cary — Cary police Monday night charged Harish Purushottamdas Patel, 60, with murder in the death of his estranged wife, whose burned body was found in Virginia last month.

“As sad as this case is, we are pleased to have been able to bring it to such a swift and certain conclusion,” said Cary Police Chief Pat Bazemore. “It’s important for our citizens to know that this was not a random act of violence against someone in our community.”

Police took Patel, of 1128 Woodway Bluff Circle, to the Wake County Public Safety Center for processing.

Vanlata Patel, 57, was last seen Jan. 16, her son, Ashesh Patel, told WRAL. She was reported missing Jan. 18 after she failed to board a plane the previous day to Toronto.

According to Mecklenburg County, Va., authorities, firefighters found Vanlata Patel’s body about 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 wrapped in a comforter at the center of a brush fire about 20 feet off an embankment along Interstate 85’s mile marker 19.

On Jan. 22, medical examiners conclusively identified the charred remains as being Patel.

The Patels had been married since 1996 and had adult children from previous marriages. She filed for divorce in November.

Court records show Vanlata Patel had a dispute with her estranged husband over how their financial assets should be divided.

In her divorce complaint, Vanlata Patel requested a majority of more than $400,000 in Swiss bank accounts that she shared with Harish Patel, including $100,000 she claimed was a gift from her parents that she was keeping in the account for her son from a previous marriage.

Bazemore said she had talked with the victim’s son and that he said he was relieved over the arrest, even if it was his stepfather that was charged.

Patel was being held without bond Monday night. His is scheduled to be in court Tuesday morning.

Two masked men entered the store in the 4300 block of Chantilly Avenue just after 6 a.m. on June 22, 2007. The men overpowered the clerk and stole cash and items from the store. The robbers then fled in a waiting car driven by a third man.

“They were positive results enabling robbery squad to make three additional arrests,” said Officer Don Gotthardy.

Responding officers arrested a man nearby who, they say, matched the description of one of the robbers. Robert F. Price, 30, was charged with robbery and abduction with the intent to extort money.

The lead detective in the case submitted DNA evidence to the state lab in late 2007. The results led investigators to arrest three additional suspects: Antonio Wilson, 26; Rickey Fentrell Price, 22; and Devin Manigo, 30. The men face several charges, including robbery.

Because of previous crimes, their DNA was in the state data base and that’s how police got a match from the crime scene and stolen case.

“If the took the means of DNA to do it, I think that’s a good thing that they’re able to track them that fast It think that’s great,” said one customer.

3 Arrested in Murder of Caswell County Store Owner

CASWELL COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — Caswell County Police have arrested three suspects in the murder of a Caswell County convenience store owner.

18-year-old Turner Blackwell, 20-year-old Nicolas Antwon King and 16-year-old Jameil LaQuan Simpson are facing charges in the murder of store owner Sayed Rawi.

All three individuals are being held without bond their first court appearance scheduled for Friday in Caswell County Court in Yanceyville.

Rawi was killed Thursday afternoon when he was shot and killed at his store “Times Three” on Highway 158 in Casville.

Rawi, a native of Egypt, moved to Caswell County years ago. In addition to being a popular local artist, he was a columnist for the local newspaper.

HONOLULU — A man dressed in hospital garb threw a toddler 30 feet from a pedestrian overpass onto a major highway, and the boy was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

A 23-year-old man was arrested Thursday after witnesses saw him throwing something, followed him and called police, authorities said. One or two vehicles may have struck the 2 1/2-year-old, but it was unclear exactly what killed him.

There were no reports of a missing child, police Capt. Frank Fujii said. Officers were contacting day-care centers and other area facilities to find out where the child came from.

“It’s a sad incident. It’s something we never wished happened,” Fujii said.

The suspect was dressed in hospital clothes, with the bottoms cut off as shorts. It wasn’t known whether he had come from a hospital, or which one, Fujii said.

Police temporarily closed the westbound lanes of the H-1 freeway, a major route into downtown Honolulu.

Hidden Cam Shows Woman Repeatedly Slapping Helpless Handicapped Man

A 56-year-old Central Florida woman was arrested after a hidden surveillance camera videotaped her repeatedly slapping and hitting a mentally handicapped man.

Vincent Dimartino said he put three hidden surveillance cameras in his Port Orange home after he suspected that his 17-year-old son wasn’t being taken care of properly by caregiver Rabha Assal Merlino.

When Merlino would come to care for Dimartino’s son, she would bring the 42-year-old victim who has Down’s Syndrome and suffers from diminished mental capacity, according to a police report.

Dimartino said the first tape he checked showed the woman delivering repeated blows to a man’s head and face.

The sound of the strikes to the head and face can be heard on the tape.

“There is no doubt that that individual was helpless and could not defend himself,” Port Orange police Capt. Frank Surmaczewicz said. “It is probably one of the worst incidents that we have seen.”

“It is still too hard to watch,” Dimartino said. “I feel angry and betrayed. She always swore how much she loved Vincent. In my head, I still hear the slapping,” Dimartino said.

Marlino spent up to 20 hours a week at the alleged victim’s home to provide caregiver services for the last four years.

Police said there are six other videos in police possession allegedly showing the woman stealing food and items, Local 6’s Adam Longo said.

BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. — Lam Luong initially told police that his girlfriend had his four young children and failed to return them, but his family suspected something more sinister: that he traded the kids for a drug fix.

The truth appears to be even worse. Police say Luong broke down under questioning and confessed to tossing the children — ages 4 months, 1, 2 and 3 — off the highest point of the Dauphin Island bridge near the Gulf of Mexico.

Mobile County Sheriff’s Flotilla Capt. Paul Stewart on Wednesday searches the waters north of the Dauphin Island bridge.

He had been fighting with his wife, Ngoc Phan, in part about the girlfriend, said Kam Phengsisomboun, Phan’s brother-in-law.

Phengsisomboun said a police witness reported seeing at least part of the horror: someone throwing a bundle from the bridge Monday as three children sat in a nearby car. Other details about the witness account were not immediately available from authorities.

The bridge is 80 feet tall at the highest part of the span, the water up to 55 feet deep, and rescuers searched Wednesday without hope of finding the children alive. Divers aided by cadaver dogs in boats searched near the bridge, while others in boats and helicopters covered an area totaling 100 square miles in case the current swept the bodies into the gulf.

The search was called off late Wednesday afternoon when dense fog rolled in, completely obscuring the bridge.

Missing and presumed dead were 4-month-old Danny Luong; 1-year-old Lindsey Luong; 2-year-old Hannah Luong; and 3-year-old Ryan Phan. Phan is not the man’s biological child, but Luong raised him from infancy, authorities said.

Some family members and friends held out hope that the children survived.

“I just pray for the kids, that they are still alive,” said Van Lam, a family friend who was at an Oriental market along with the children’s maternal grandmother Wednesday afternoon.

Luong, 37, is charged with four counts of capital murder.

He came to Alabama from Vietnam in 1984 and worked as a shrimper, Phengsisomboun said. The couple lived with Ngoc Phan’s mother at Bayou La Batre, a fishing village 20 miles southwest of Mobile with a large Southeast Asian community.

Phengsisomboun said the couple had recently moved back to the area from Hinesville, Ga.

Luong had argued with his wife Sunday night and again Monday before taking the children, Phengsisomboun said. Luong’s girlfriend, who is from New York but had been living in a Gulfport, Miss., hotel, was a factor in the dispute, he said.

Luong left the home with two of the children, then later came back for the other two, he said.

Investigators and family members said Luong reported the children missing Monday, claiming he had given the kids to his girlfriend and that she failed to return them. Authorities said he changed his story Tuesday night after they found holes in his account.

Phengsisomboun said he initially feared Luong had traded the children to buy drugs. Luong had a crack habit and had rapidly spent money from an insurance settlement after an automobile accident, he said.

Luong was arrested last Oct. 19 in Hinesville on a charge accusing him of possessing crack cocaine; a grand jury has not acted on the case. According to a police report, he called police looking to turn himself in.

Luong was scheduled to appear in court Thursday on the murder charges. District Attorney John Tyson said he did not believe Luong had a lawyer.

His 23-year-old wife was in seclusion Wednesday at her mother’s brick home, the front porch cluttered with children’s shoes.

Slain Girls’ Mother Asks Father To Turn Himself In

Family and friends remembered two slain teenage girls at funeral services on Saturday.

Police continue to search for the girls’ father, Yasser Said, who allegedly killed his daughters Amina and Sarah Said on New Year’s Day.

The girls’ mother, Patricia Said, issued a plea for their father to turn himself in.

“All I’m asking is turn yourself in,” she said. “We will not quit until we find you. If it’s the last thing I do, I promise, I will find you.”

The girls’ mother and brother, Islam, are in hiding, but both attended the service at Rahma Funeral Home.

“He messed up the family,” Islam Said said. “Everybody’s shocked.”

Many people wore pink ribbons and held pink flowers in memory of Amina and Sarah Said. Mourners said the outgoing sisters were inseparable.

Police found 17-year-old Sarah and 18-year-old Amina shot to death in their father’s taxicab Tuesday night.

The victims’ boyfriends said they believe the girls were killed for dating American men.

NBC 5 reported that Patricia Said had left her husband and took the girls because he refused to let his daughters date American boys. When the girls returned home last week, Yaser Said was enraged, friends said.

Police said they are still looking for Said, but have no leads on his whereabouts.

Man arrested in death of woman found burning at Royal Palm Beach church

A 30-year-old Sunrise man left 24-year-old Katie Brunelle’s body burning behind a church parking lot on Dec. 23 after beating her to death, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office announced today.

John Liebro faces second-degree murder charges that could be upgraded after the State Attorney’s Office reviews the case, officials said. Liebro and Brunelle worked together at a Denny’s restaurant in Sheridan and had become involved romantically, according to sheriff’s detective Jennifer DeGidio. They had gone out together on Dec. 21, and Liebro eventually took her home to make his girlfriend jealous in the early morning on Dec. 22, DeGidio said. Brunelle and the girlfriend, 29-year-old Michelle Gonzalez, argued, and Brunelle spit on Gonzalez, according to DeGidio. When Liebro drove Brunelle away from the house, “he tried to get Katie to be quiet and she continued to yell,” DeGidio said. “At that time, John apparently snapped. He stopped the car and proceeded to strangle Katie to death.” Liebro returned home and told Gonzalez that Brunelle would no longer be a problem for them, according to DeGidio. He left Brunelle’s body in the passenger’s seat of his car with a comforter draped over her, DeGidio said. That night, Liebro threatened to kill Gonzalez and her 9-year-old son if Gonzalez didn’t accompany him to dispose of the body, DeGidio said.

A passing deputy found Brunelle’s body on fire in a wooded lot behind Our Lady Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church in Royal Palm Beach shortly after 3 a.m. on Dec. 23. DeGidio said Liebro set his car on fire in a Margate parking lot by lighting gas-soaked rags on the passenger’s side floor on Dec. 26. Hours later, he reported the car stolen. But he also told several family members about what he had done to Brunelle, DeGidio said. He did not confess to the crime when sheriff’s detectives interviewed him.

Liebro is on probation in Pennsylvania for robbery and was originally booked into the Broward County Jail for violating that probation when he drove into Palm Beach County. Cell tower records placed him near the church before Brunelle’s body was found there.

Because Liebro threatened her, Gonzalez will not face charges, DeGidio said.

Brunelle leaves behind two sons ñ ages 4 and 2 ñ and a husband. She did not live with her family because of drug and alcohol problems, DeGidio said.

Man arrested in connection with burning body

Almost six months after a small, black hair was found in a child-size hole in a wall, police arrested a Riverside man and a San Diego woman in her toddler’s death.

The secret lover of Kaori Wearing smashed her 2-year-old daughter’s head into a wall while the mother was away on a follow-up to cosmetic surgery, police said. He then let the child slowly die on a bed while the mother was under the influence of a painkiller after she returned home, according to an affidavit.

An FBI Inland apprehension team took Chad Harris, 25, of Riverside, into custody about 7:30 p.m. Thursday after a standoff on Rockport Court in Moreno Valley. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and child cruelty resulting in death, Riverside police spokesman Steven Frasher said in a news release.

FBI agents arrested Wearing, 33, of San Diego, Friday morning on suspicion of child endangerment and accessory to a felony, Frasher said, “for her part in trying to cover for Harris” in Affinity Wearing’s Aug. 13 death.

Charges were filed against Harris and Wearing by the Riverside County district attorney’s office last week. The district attorney’s office reviewed the case after police submitted it, DA spokeswoman Ingrid Wyatt said.

Affinity Wearing was found not breathing Aug. 13 in Harris’ Blaine Street apartment in Riverside, according to court records. Kaori Wearing was staying with Harris for five days while undergoing cosmetic surgery in Huntington Beach, Frasher said. She and Harris were having an affair while her husband was deployed with the Navy, Frasher said.

Police find San Jose woman’s body

DISCOVERY IN MILPITAS LANDFILL BRINGS FAMILY MEASURE OF PEACE

The news they dreaded, but were relieved to finally hear, came on Wednesday for the grief-stricken family of 35-year-old Lisa Nguyen. Searchers found the woman’s body at a Milpitas landfill in the early afternoon.

San Jose police and workers at the Newby Island Landfill had spent nearly seven days scouring layers of refuse from daybreak to nightfall. Nguyen went missing on Dec. 8 after failing to return home as she’d promised, her family said. She apparently set out to go to dinner and a movie.

“We are mourning, but we are relieved to have her back with us,” Nguyen’s sister, Jennie Nguyen, said Wednesday in a brief statement on behalf of the family.

The family expressed gratitude to all who assisted in the search for her, especially to the San Jose Police Department’s Homicide Unit and Detectives Michael Knox and John Seaman, “for their untiring work to bring Lisa back to us. Lisa is back with us, and now her soul is in peace.”

Jennie Nguyen said her family and friends of her sister have sponsored a Christmas tree in her name at San Jose’s Christmas in the Park. It is tree No. 505.

“Lisa loved Christmas,” Jennie Nguyen said. “We got her the tree so that her loved ones can put up an ornament in her memory.”

San Jose police officer Jermaine Thomas would not go into details about why authorities focused their search on that location. Workers searching the landfill used a grid map of the site, which methodically lays out where refuse comes from and is dumped.

Anthony Davis Evans, 45, who was Nguyen’s personal trainer at Fitness USA in Milpitas, was taken into custody Dec. 12 and faces first-degree murder charges in her death. Evans, who is being held without bail, is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday in Santa Clara County Superior Court.

Authorities allege he bludgeoned the 35-year-old Nguyen to death with a metal bar inside his San Jose apartment. Investigators say they found blood on the rug in Evans’ bedroom and a bag containing blood-splattered clothing and bedding in his car.

Police located Evans at a motel near his apartment. When he was first questioned by police, he denied knowing Nguyen.

When Nguyen, the program manager at Radicati Group in Palo Alto, failed to show up at work on Dec. 10, her family and friends grew fearful.

2 youths are held for trial after grocer’s daughter, 24, describes fatal shooting

A 24-year-old Chinese immigrant bravely described in court yesterday how she and her parents fought off two would-be robbers in their Crescentville store moments before one of the youths allegedly shot and killed her father.

Jiaxing Lu, 47, was pronounced dead at Albert Einstein Medical Center at 11:05 a.m. Aug. 9, about an hour after being shot in his Lu’s Grocery store, on Colgate Street near Cheltenham Avenue.

His daughter, LiXia Lu, identified the two youths she had seen in the store that morning - James Canady, 16, of Crescentville, and Darrin White, 19, of North Philadelphia - during their preliminary hearing yesterday.

Municipal Court Judge James DeLeon held both youths for trial on murder, robbery, and weapons and conspiracy charges.

Authorities contend that Canady, then 15, fired the fatal shots.

LiXia, testifying through a Mandarin-Chinese interpreter, said that on that morning, she was in a second-floor room, above the store, when she heard her father shouting in pain.

She said that she rushed downstairs and that when she entered the store, a masked man pointed a gun at her, aiming between her eyes.

She also saw a second man “fighting with my dad” behind the counter and the security-glass barrier.

The daughter said she grabbed cans and threw them toward the man pointing the gun. He dodged, dropping the gun, but quickly picked it up, she said.

“He approached me,” she said. “He hit me. Then he threw me down on the floor.

“Then I got up, and I fought him,” she said in a quiet, serious voice. “Then that’s when I took off his mask.”

Asked by Assistant District Attorney Michael Barry if she recognized his face, LiXia said, “Yes.”

She identified Canaday as the assailant, and said he “came to our store to rob last year.” Before that, “he came to our store every day,” she said. (Canady was arrested on robbery charges last year, but the case was dismissed in Family Court for lack of evidence.)

LiXia testified that she pushed Canady out the door while her mother, Yu-Zhen Zheng, who also had rushed from the second floor into the store, hit him in the knee with a soda can. After they forced him out, the daughter locked the door.

Then the second would-be robber tried to flee. LiXia identified him as White. She said he was not wearing a mask when she saw him.

APPLETON, Wis. — Darshana Patel told authorities she was suspicious as she watched her boyfriend stir a smoothie at an ice cream store. When he offered it to her, she noticed powder on the cup’s rim, and the pregnant woman feigned illness and didn’t drink it.

According to a criminal complaint, the woman says she sent the powder to a laboratory and it turned out to be mifepristone, the abortion pill also known as RU-486.

The test results came too late: She had already suffered two miscarriages in less than a year.

On Thursday, Manishkumar M. Patel, 34, of Appleton, was accused of slipping the drug to the woman without her knowledge. He was charged with seven felonies and two misdemeanors, including attempted first-degree intentional homicide of an unborn child, stalking, burglary and two counts of violating a restraining order. The nine charges carry a maximum penalty of 99 1/2 years in prison and a $92,000 fine.

Wisconsin is one of 37 states with a “fetal homicide” law, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Under the 1998 law, anyone who attacks a pregnant woman and injures or kills her fetus could face life in prison.

“These allegations are devious, diabolical and disturbing,” Outagamie County Court Commissioner Brian Figy told Manishkumar Patel at a hearing.

Defense lawyer Thomas Zoesch said he had not had a chance to discuss the case in detail with his client but expects he will plead not guilty. No one answered the door at Darshana Patel’s Kaukauna home Thursday evening.

Darshana Patel and Manishkumar Patel are not related, and Manishkumar Patel is married to someone else; Patel is a common Indian last name.

The criminal complaint paints a picture of a long-running affair that produced a child, now age 3, but which soured.

The two had known each other since Manishkumar Patel, who holds a legal green card, emigrated to the U.S. from India in 1998, the complaint said. The two began a relationship in 2001 and had a son in 2004.

Darshana Patel said she became pregnant with Manish’s child in September 2006 — a child he denied was his — but she miscarried two months later.

She became pregnant with his child again in August 2007, the complaint said, and this time she noticed how attentive Manish became. He even prepared meals for her on occasion.

Then she noticed the powder on the smoothie cup at the store. A short time later, her doctor detected problems in her hormone levels, and she contacted the lab to test the substance in the cup. While waiting for a kit to test the substance, she miscarried. The lab test later confirmed the presence of the abortion pill, the complaint said.

She obtained a restraining order Nov. 13, authorities said.

The complaint said a search of Manishkumar Patel’s residence Wednesday found an envelope containing pills labeled as mifepristone, or RU-486. Investigators said they asked him if he knew what kind of pills they were, and he responded, “abortion pills.”

He told deputies he got the pills from India, according to the complaint. Access to RU-486 is strictly regulated in the U.S., and it is only administered to women in a doctor’s office.

Investigators asked him whether he used the pills to cause the miscarriages and he declined to answer. In a follow-up interview, he admitted giving Darshana “one pill” but did not say when or where, the complaint said.

Patel was ordered held on $750,000 bail after Assistant District Attorney Mark Schroeder said Patel had a net worth of $400,000 and was a flight risk. Patel runs service stations and other businesses.

Investigators had found an airline ticket in Patel’s home for a flight scheduled to leave for Germany on Nov. 28, the day after he was arrested, Schroeder said.

Police on Wednesday released the 911 tape and dash cam footage of the brutal beating of a cab driver injured, as a community continues to seek justice in the case.

The video shows Luis Vasquez punch and choke drier Shukvir Singh during a fight on the shoulder of Interstate 5 in Seattle. Shocked witnesses flooded 911 with calls.

“It looked like a fender bender and then between the two cars, there’s a guy (who’s) got another guy pinned on the ground and he’s stomping on his head,” one caller told the 911 operator.

Singh believes he was targeted because as a Sikh, he wears a turban. He says Vasquez called him an “Iraqi terrorist.”

Vasquez, 20, has been charged with a hate crime, and it’s not the first time he has run into trouble with the law.

According to police, Vaasquez was arrested last year for allegedly slapping his girlfriend during an argument. He is also accused of punching someone else’s car during the same fight, leaving a dent.

According to a statement of probable cause file in court, Vazquez was kicked out of the Apple Cup at Husky stadium on Saturday and placed into a cab by two police officers who told the driver that Vazquez needed to be taken to his home in Kent.

While the cab was southbound on Interstate 5, police said Vazquez began punching Singh in the head while calling him a terrorist. Singh pulled over and tried to run away, but witnesses told state troopers that Vazquez followed him, knocked him to the ground and continued to kick him in the head.

VILLIERS-LE-BEL, France: Rampaging youths clashed with the police for a second night in a suburb of Paris, hurling Molotov cocktails and setting fire to dozens of cars. At least 77 police officers were wounded and some officers were fired at, a senior police union official said Tuesday.

The violence overnight Monday was more intense than during three weeks of rioting in 2005, said the union official, Patrice Ribeiro. Police officers are facing “genuine urban guerillas with conventional weapons and hunting weapons,” he said.

Some officers were hit by shotgun pellets, Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said. She said there were six serious wounds, “people who notably were struck in the face and close to the eyes.”

Another police union official said a round from a hunting rifle pierced the body armor of one officer, leaving him with a serious shoulder wound.

President Nicolas Sarkozy, in China on Monday on an official visit, appealed for calm.

The clashes began when two teenagers on a motorcycle died in a collision with a police car Sunday in this town of public housing blocks about 20 kilometers, or 12 miles, north of Paris. The teenagers were identified in French news reports only as Moushin, 15, and Larami, 16.

On Monday night, more than 100 youths pushed riot police officers into the middle of a four-way intersection, raining projectiles on them from at least two directions. Police officers responded with tear gas and paint guns to mark the attackers for arrest. Broken glass and spent tear-gas canisters littered the streets.

At least 36 cars were burned Monday, the authorities said, with the police guarding the local fire department and moving to protect firefighters as they put out fires. At least three buildings received some fire damage, including a library and a post office, a police spokesman said.

Many of the youths had lined up garbage cans in the middle of a street.

Firecrackers were set off and when a firebomb hit a garbage can, youths could be heard cheering. Standing on the sideline of the battles, one young man was holding a poster of one of the two dead teenagers: “Deceased 25/11/07. Dead for nothing.”

The incidents Monday night took place not far from where Moushin and Larami died, and they followed other confrontations between teenagers and the police on Sunday night.

Residents claimed that the police officers had left the crash scene without helping the teenagers. Officials cast doubt on the claim, but the internal police oversight agency said it was investigating. The police authority for the department of Val d’Oise suggested that it was an ordinary traffic accident and that the youths had ignored the right of way.

In the violence Sunday, eight people were arrested and 20 police officers were hurt - including the town’s police chief, who was hit in the face with an iron bar when he tried to negotiate with the rioters, the police said.

A study by the state auditor’s office indicated that money poured into poor French suburbs in recent decades had done little to solve problems vividly exposed by the 2005 riots, including discrimination, unemployment and alienation from mainstream French society.

The unrest in 2005 was prompted by the deaths of two teenagers who were electrocuted in a power substation while hiding from the police in another suburb northeast of Paris.

Fires raged and mobs rioted in the Paris banlieues (suburbs) Monday night for the second night in a row, after two boys, aged 15 and 16, died when their mini-motorcycle hit a police car a day earlier, Nidra Poller reports. At least sixty policemen have been injured, and a school gym has gone up in flames.

Violence is spreading from Villiers le Bel to a dozen neighboring communities. At least twenty policemen have been injured so far tonight (forty injured last night according to the latest figures), some of them critically. The insurgents are using firebombs, iron rods, baseball bats, and firing buckshot. Journalists are attacked, their cameras are stolen. The mayor of Villiers le Bel is running a crisis center from an undisclosed location. Interior Minister Michèle Alliot-Marie is strangely absent, silent, or ineffectual. This is not the way it is supposed to be happening in the Sarkozy government. Don’t be surprised if Alliot-Marie is replaced early next year.

Cars, dumpsters, and buildings have been torched. A school gym has gone up in flames. Shop windows that weren’t smashed last night are targets tonight.

Police investigators and several eyewitnesses corroborate the patrolmen’s version of the accident. The police car was going at a normal speed, no sirens, no hot pursuit. The mini-motorcycle came down a side street at high speed and made a left turn, crashing directly into the police car. The police remained on the scene for approximately twenty to thirty minutes until the fire department ambulance arrived.

President Sarkozy, on a state visit to China, issued a plea for calm. It must have seemed quite logical from where he’s standing… but it’s totally inaudible here on the receiving end.

The tally on Sunday’s punk jihad outburst is heavy and rising.

Twenty-five policemen injured, dozens of cars burned, shops destroyed, individuals assaulted. Blind with rage, the rampaging mob found time to steal before smashing and burning. For the brother of Mushin, one of the victims, “it’s not violence, it’s an expression of rage.”

Journalists are unwelcome, often assaulted, but they are getting the story out.

According to concurrent reports, the rage broke out immediately. The police claim the motorcycle ran into their patrol car at an intersection; the enraged know better—the police car in hot pursuit of the innocent boys, Moushin and Larami, smashed into their motorcycle. Moushin’s uncle was outraged because the bodies were left lying in the fire station. But it seems that the forces that came to pick them up had to turn back because they were attacked. The boys had gone out to do a little bit of rodeo, a favorite sport in the banlieue projects. Le Parisien posted You Tube videos filmed by reckless kids.

Reckless, yes, but when they get wrecked it’s the fault of the police, the Peugeot dealership, and McDonald’s.

The euphemism for these enclaves — “quartier sensible”—bears a nugget of truth if correctly translated as “touchy neighborhoods.” Villiers le Bel is in the administrative district of Sarcelles / Garges-les-Gonesses about 20 km north of Paris. Not so long ago Sarcelles was the home sweet home of Jewish refugees from North Africa; today it is their nightmare. They endure constant attacks and harassment from the permanently enraged African-Arab-Muslim residents who live cheek by jowl with their still neat clean streets.

An in-law of the widow of a Queens dentist gunned down in Forest Hills was charged with his murder after detectives made a CSI-style fingerprint match, police said Tuesday.

Authorities say 50-year-old Mikhail Mallayev was taken into custody Saturday in front of his house in Chamblee, Georgia, after detectives matched his fingerprints to the homemade silencer believed to have been used in the October 28 murder.

He reportedly offered no resistance.

Mallayev was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

He is being held in Georgia pending extradition.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly described Mallayev as an in-law of the Mazoltuv Borakhova, widow of Dr. Daniel Malakov, killed while taking his 5-year-old daughter Michelle to see her.

The couple had been embroiled in a bitter custody dispute.

The suspect is reportedly related by marriage to Malakov’s widow.

“There is a relationship, in laws, we believe,” Kelly said.

Authorities say Mallayev’s prints, from the homemade silencer found at the crime scene, were matched to prints from his December 29, 1994, arrest for fare evasion in the subway system.

A second set of prints were matched Saturday, and he was placed under arrest by NYPD detectives and officials from De Kalb County.

Mallayev, a native of Uzbekistan, has lived in United States for past 19 years.

Kelly would not discuss the motive for the murder.

“We are not going to go into the details at this time,” he said. “An arrest has been made, an extradition hearing will be held today in Georgia.”

The police commissioner praised the CSI-style detective work that led to the arrest.

“I want to commend the latent print detectives,” he said. “They had to use special procedures, darken the prints, because of the nature of the prints taken in 1994, manual procedures had to be used.”

On November 5, Malakov’s ex-wife testified in Queens Family Court that he had abused her; a divorce lawyer who represented the shooting victim said it wasn’t true.

The death shocked Malakov’s close-knit community of Bukharan Jews from the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan.

The victim’s family has insisted all along that Borakhova or members of her family were somehow responsible for the murder. It is an allegation that Borakhova, for the record, has repeatedly denied.

The arrest is a major development, but the Malakov’s have so many unanswered questions.

Beaten up at the drop of a hat

MOREHEAD CITY - Two brothers who own a Morehead City business were arrested Monday night following an alleged assault against a customer they wrongfully claimed was trying to steal from them, police said.

Maysara Alqazah, 27, and Yaser Alqazah, 25, who reside in Atlantic Beach, were arrested by Morehead City Police Department and charged with second-degree kidnapping, common law robbery, assault inflicting serious injury and assault on a female, said Capt. Garland Terry.

The men are accused of assaulting Morehead City resident Nathaniel Willis, 18, who was a customer in their business, the 98 Cents Only Discount Store on Arendell Street, police said.

Willis reportedly went to the store counter to purchase cigars, at which time the elder Alqazah brother, who was the clerk at the counter, accused him of trying to steal a hat, Terry said.

According to police information, the hat was visible, but Willis, who had a cast on one arm, was holding it in his coat. Willis held up a $20 bill to show that he intended to pay, but the clerk grabbed him and called for his brother, Terry said.

The brothers allegedly started assaulting Willis and attempted to pull him to the back of the store, he said.

At one point they locked the front doors of the store and assaulted Willis on his arms, back and upper torso using a piece of wood, Terry said. Willis was treated for his injuries at Carteret General Hospital and then released.

The assault on a female charge stems from actions allegedly taken against Willis’ girlfriend, who heard a commotion and went inside to see what was happening.

She was hit by a door when one of the brothers opened it and yelled at her to get out of the store, Terry said.

After assaulting Willis, the brothers took his $20 and let him go, at which time he and his girlfriend called police, he said.

Maysara and Yaser Alqazah were each placed in the Carteret County Jail under a $30,000 bond.

A former tester at a now-closed trucking school in West Plains pleaded guilty of Friday for providing fraudulent commercial driver licenses. Orbin May worked for the South Central Career Center Truck Driver Training School. May admitted he gave incomplete or inadequate driving tests. He also admitted fraudulently certifying that applicants had legitimately passed tests.

Two men from Somalia also admitted to participating in the conspiracy by transporting students to West Plains to obtain the licenses for large numbers of citizens from Somali and Bosnia.

Orbin Dale May, 64, of West Plains, and Ahmed Muhidin Sharif, 28, a citizen of Somalia living in Kansas City, Mo., pleaded guilty before U.S. Chief Magistrate Judge James England to the charge contained in a federal indictment on Sept. 20, 2006. Abdiwahab Mohamud Mohamed, 38, a citizen of Somalia living in Minneapolis, pleaded guilty on Nov. 1, 2007, for his role in the conspiracy.

The co-defendants each admitted they were involved in a mail fraud conspiracy from April 1, 2003, to Feb. 6, 2006, that defrauded others by denying the public the right of honest service of contract employees of the state of Missouri. The conspiracy involved fraudulent testing for commercial driver’s licenses on the part of the South Central Career Center Truck Driver Training School (SCCC) in West Plains. May was employed at SCCC, which at that time was a division of the West Plains School District, to train truck drivers and administer CDL driving tests.

A commercial driver’s license (CDL) allows a person to operate heavy commercial trucks – such as 18-wheel tractors and trailers – and buses on the public highways. In order to obtain a CDL, a driver-applicant must first pass a written test. If the driver-applicant passes the written test, he is issued a temporary permit and must then take the practical “skills test” or “competency test” administered either by the Missouri State Highway Patrol or a third-party tester, such as SCCC. This second test requires the driver-applicant to physically demonstrate his knowledge and ability to inspect and safely drive a commercial vehicle. These tests are required and regulated by both federal and state laws.

May admitted he gave incomplete or inadequate driving tests and fraudulently certified that applicants had legitimately passed the driving tests. During the course of the conspiracy and in furtherance of the conspiracy, May submitted fraudulent CDL forms, indicating that applicants had successfully completed the competency test, to the SCCC office, which then mailed them to the Missouri Department of Revenue. May would provide the applicant with a copy of the certifying document that could be used to obtain the CDL at a Missouri Department of Revenue office.

May also admitted that he received additional payment (above that which was required under law) to administer the tests, in order to ensure that applicants passed the CDL driving test.

Sharif participated in the conspiracy by transporting students from a truck-driving school to SCCC, knowing that May would fraudulently administer the competency tests. Sharif made about 15 trips in which he transported 70 to 80 students of Somali descent to West Plains in order to fraudulently obtain CDLs. Sharif knew the tests were being fraudulently administered by May, and observed May give incomplete or inadequate CDL driving tests to the students.

Mohamed, who had fraudulently obtained a CDL, directed students from the state of Minnesota in order to obtain fraudulent CDL licenses.

Under federal statutes, each of the three co-defendants could be subject to a sentence of up to five years in federal prison without parole, plus a fine up to $250,000. Sentencing hearings will be scheduled after the completion of presentence investigations by the United States Probation Office.

The Symmes Township man, a native of Taiwan, pleaded guilty Monday and was convicted of two rape charges, two attempted rape charges, felonious assault, five aggravated burglary charges and illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material from attacks on three girls dating back to 2001.

Wu, 50, attacked one girl three separate times.

In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dismissed three charges of felonious assault and a charge of gross sexual imposition.

Prosecutors don’t expect additional charges to be filed related to the child pornography found on Wu’s computer.

Wu, a software engineer, faces up to 102 years in prison when sentenced Dec. 7.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said his office will ask for a prison term of at least 100 years. He said he’d be happy with any sentence that puts Wu behind bars for life.

Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge William Mallory Jr. asked Wu how he could harm his friends’ children, a question that was met with silence.

Later, softly crying, Wu said: “I don’t know what got into my head. It was bad judgment.”

Relatives of Wu’s three victims attended the hearing, sitting quietly together in the back of the small courtroom.

Wu’s wife, who has filed for divorce, and his two children did not attend the hearing.

Wu was caught last summer after one victim woke up and recognized him.

Her report led to the discovery of the other assaults, in which the girls thought they had been attacked, but weren’t sure whether they were dreaming, according to prosecutors.

In each case, all in northeastern Hamilton County, Wu used his friendships with the girls’ fathers to get the codes to their garage alarm systems and learn when the girls would be alone, prosecutors said.

Wu attacked his first victim three times, striking first in September 2001.

During the third attack, on June 15, 2004, the chloroform – made from acetone, bleach and ice – harmed the girl and requiring her to be hospitalized for several weeks.

“It was touch and go there for awhile,” Piepmeier said.

Wu claimed his second victim on June 21, 2006, breaking into her home and attacking her in a similar fashion, prosecutors said.

His undoing came July 18 when he broke into the third girl’s home and waited for her to arrive home.

Masked, Wu surprised her, hitting the girl first with a stun gun, then using the chloroform to subdue her, prosecutors said. The girl awoke during the attack and recognized Wu, Piepmeier said.

Wu was arrogant when first questioned by Hamilton County sheriff’s detectives, but when the officers told him they found a clear liquid chemical and a stun gun behind a drawer in his desk, the suspect’s confidence crumbled and he confessed, according to testimony from a hearing last week.

A local man accused of using chloroform soaked rags and tasers to rape three teenage girls took the stand on Friday for a pre-trial hearing.

Chien Tai Wu is charged with rape, aggravated burglary and felonious assault.

Investigators say Wu raped girls whose families he had befriended in Montgomery and Symmes Township over the last six years.

Friday’s hearing was to determine if some of his earlier testimony would be used in his trial.

The judge decided that it all will be used when the trial begins January 14.

Wu is being held on the largest bond ever set in Hamilton County at $15 million.

An Ohio man (A gook-kook man from Taiwan) has pleaded guilty to knocking out the teenage daughters of his friends with chemicals, then raping them.

Chien Tai Wu offered to take care of pets for friends who went on vacation to get the codes that controlled their garage doors, and used the codes to enter the homes when the teenagers were home alone.

A 50-year-old immigrant from Taiwan charged in a series of four rapes was “confident, even arrogant” when questioned by police July 24, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Detective

Bryan Pitchford testified Friday.

When detectives outlined details of the crimes, Chien Tai Wu would say, “Prove it,” Pitchford said. Wu allegedly drugged the victims and used a stun gun to subdue them.

But when detectives revealed officers had found a clear liquid chemical and a stun gun behind a drawer in Wu’s desk, Wu crumbled.

The Symmes Township software engineer dropped his head and said, ‘I did it. I am (expletive),’ “Pitchford said.

Wu then confessed, giving detectives details about each rape.

Wu tried unsuccessfully to have that statement suppressed during a hearing Friday.

His lawyer, James Kolenich, argued Wu didn’t understand his right to remain silent and didn’t know he could have left at any time during the interview since he had not been arrested.

Wu testified at the hearing, saying he was 36 when he came to America and had never had contact with police. “There are cultural differences,” he said.

Although he had seen Miranda rights read to defendants on television programs, being questioned in person was much different, Wu said. “I really didn’t understand,” he said.

“Actually I was intimidated.”

Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor Mark Piepmeier disputed that.

“He lived here more, or at least as long as he lived in the other country, he has a Ph.D,” Piepmeier said. “He basically thought he could beat this.

“It was only when officers told him what they found that he crumbled,” Piepmeier said.

Wu faces 17 charges including rape, felonious assault and aggravated burglary.

Prosecutors said Wu preyed on his friends’ teenage daughters when he knew they would be home alone.

Using garage codes or keys his friends had given him when he offered to repair computers or take care of their pets, Wu would enter the home, prosecutors said.

Once inside, he used homemade chloroform and a stun gun to subdue the young women before sexually molesting them, authorities said.

His victims were left uncertain whether they were attacked or dreamed it.

One victim woke up July 18 and saw Wu, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said. Her case led to the other victims, Deters said.

If convicted, Wu faces up to 137 years in prison.

Wu is being held in the Hamilton County Justice Center on $15 million bond.

His trial is scheduled for Jan. 16.

JEW YORK - A former medical examiner’s office employee admitted to running an elaborate scheme in which he and a subordinate stole millions of dollars meant to identify the victims of the World Trade Center attacks.

Natarjan Venkataram pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court to 16 charges, including embezzlement and money laundering. His partner, Rosa Abreu, last week pleaded guilty to charges of embezzlement, money laundering and conspiracy.

Abreu was the director of records at the medical examiner’s office, and Venkataram was her boss. They resigned in 2005.

The two, charged in 2005, steered more than $13 million in computer service contracts and purchase orders between 1999 and 2004, in exchange for cash kickbacks to companies that did little or no work.

Murdered Dentist’s Father, Community Badly Shaken - Still No Arrests In Murder Of Dr. Daniel Malakov

The devastated father of a New York dentist who was gunned down in broad daylight in front of his young daughter is speaking out in a cry for help after there have still be no arrests yet in the tragic crime.

“Maybe somebody saw from window, maybe somebody saw from apartment, maybe from street, if they can help, please help us, help police,” Khaika Malakov tells CBS 2.

He has been heartbroken since his son, Dr. Daniel Malakov, was murdered at a Queens playground over the weekend. Dr Malakov had brought his 4-year-old daughter there to meet his estranged wife, Dr. Mozoltuv Borukhova, who allegedly had made violent threats to her husband after a judge awarded him custody of their daughter.

Police say a gunman shot him and escaped.

“Somebody called me, ‘Somebody shot him!’” Mr. Malakov said.

The father says his son’s wife and her family had become abusive in the days leading up to the shooting, even threatening their lives.

“They tell us you you will die, you will this, your will die, you are not good,” he said.

Borukhova has been questioned by police, but has not been accused of anything.

“The chief rabbi here has urged members of the community not to pre-judge the case,” said Stephen Scaring, Borukhova’s attorney.

Outside the victim’s former office, well-wishers have created a makeshift memorial. A sign on the door alludes to the tragedy.

With the day ending the way it began — no word that the horrific crime was any closer to being solved — Mr. Malakov continues to mourn the loss of his son.

“I don’t know who can do it like this,” he cried. “I don’t know who can help us.”

Meanwhile, members of the Bukharan Jewish community are also shocked that a murder could happen within their own. Grisly crimes don’t often happen in Forest Hills, and residents say it’s the kind of place where people know everyone’s name and everyone’s businesss.

“It’s so strange, it’s so unbelievable it would happen to a Bukharan family,” said Fira Furman, a Forest Hills resident.

Residents are still debating whether it was Borukhova behind the murder.

“Come on, we all threaten each other. With kids, it was just words which comes out of her mouth. She was angry because he had her kids,” one resident said.

Bukharan Jews come from central Asia, with most residents here arriving in the early 1990s after the breakup of the Soviet Union.

Community leader Boris Kandov brags that his phone book lists the name of every Bukharan Jew in the country. “Around 50,000 Bukharan Jews. Every one is in the telephone book,” he says.

The chief rabbi of the community says he knew Dr. Malakov and his wife very well. He counseled the troubled couple prior to their divorce. “It was the American dream — two young people came to America. They became doctors, they married, had a beautiful girl and they lived nicely and started all sorts of a nasty separation case, a divorce case,” said Rabbi Itzhak Yehoshua. “It’s an American dream that ended like a nightmare.”

On Tuesday, old men played dominos in the playground where Dr. Malakov was murdered. Things seemed normal, though it’s apparent the community is badly shaken.
