Teen Held in Furniture Robbery

HARKER HEIGHTS – An 18-year-old is being held in an alleged attempt of taking a table and chairs at knife point.

Summyia Nicole Wilson is being held in n Bell County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond following the incident which occured shortly after midnight on Saturday in the 200 Block of Dale Earnhardt Drive.

Harker Height Police Chief Mike Gentry says a couple living at that address heard noises coming from the porch. Upon investigating, they discovered a woman trying to take a table and chairs off the porch. When the couple attempted to stop her, Wilson is alleged to have threatened them with a knife. They were able to hold her until police arrived.

The 15-acre estate that served as Michael Vick’s dogfighting headquarters failed to sell at auction Saturday.

The owner of the property in rural southeastern Virginia, real estate developer Wilbur Ray Todd Jr., rejected a final bid of $747,000, the assessed value of the property at 1915 Moonlight Road. The bidder was anonymous. There were only two bidders and the opening bid was $345,000.

“I didn’t see the people in the crowd I thought we needed,” a disappointed Todd said after the auction held inside the house. He said he will list the property for sale.

Todd said it would cost about $1 million to build a similar house on 15 acres.

Vick, the suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback, is serving a 23-month sentence for a dogfighting conspiracy. Vick and three co-defendants raised pit bulls and trained them for fighting in the rugged wooded area behind a 4,600-square-foot white brick house.

Vick paid about $34,000 for the tract in 2002 and had the house built. Behind the house and a full-size basketball court, partly obscured by a fence, are four outbuildings and dozens of dog cages.

According to court papers, some of the dogfights were held on the second floor of one of the outbuildings. There are other remnants of Vick’s “Bad Newz Kennels” dogfighting enterprise, including a metal pole and chain that was used to restrain pit bulls.

Hundreds of people — most of them just curious — toured the property during three open houses over the past week.

Vick sold the property for $450,000 to Todd, who spent an additional $50,000 fixing up the place, which had been trashed by burglars and looters.

“By the time you pay a commission and taxes, it gets eaten up real quick,” Todd said to explain why the nearly $250,000 he would have made from auction’s final bid was not enough.

The house has two master suites and a media room with wet bar. A double-sided gas fireplace separates the bathroom from the bedroom in the upstairs master suite.

Other amenities include jetted tubs, freshly refinished hardwood floors, a two-car garage and an expansive kitchen with center island, granite countertops and built-in stainless steel appliances.

Rapper ‘Birdman’ Arrested in Tenn.

KINGSPORT, Tenn. — Rapper Bryan “Birdman” Williams was among 16 people charged with possession of marijuana Tuesday after the RV they were riding in was pulled over by police for making an improper lane change.

Kingsport Police Cpl. Tim Horne said he stopped the vehicle after seeing it force a tractor trailer into the emergency lane on Interstate 81.

Horne said he could smell marijuana from inside the rented RV and located about a pound of marijuana in a trash can in the kitchenette after obtaining consent to search the vehicle.

Williams, 38, his wife Brittany, 18, and his brother, Ronald Williams, 43, were each charged with possession of more than 1/2 ounce of marijuana as were 13 others, several of whom are also affiliated with the rap industry and Cash Money Records, which was founded by Bryan and Ronald Williams.

Among those arrested were road manager Shahid Muhammad, 40, Cash Money Records promoter Casey Collins, 42, and music promoter Ovide Antoine, 32, of Miami, Fla.

All 16 remained jailed late Tuesday night. It was not known if any of them had an attorney.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is assisting in the investigation because an assault rifle, a handgun and a magazine for a .45-caliber handgun were found on the RV, Horne said. No weapons charges have been filed.

The group said they were traveling from New Orleans to New York for a BET network shoot, Horne said.

Akon is facing criminal charges after a fan said she suffered a concussion when the hip-hop star tossed a teenager off the stage and onto her in the concert crowd.

Akon, 34, is scheduled to appear in Fishkill Town Court on Monday morning for arraignment on a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a minor, and second-degree harassment, a violation, according to a news release Thursday from Police Chief Donald Williams.

Audience members said that a spectator lobbed something at Akon and that the singer asked the crowd to point out the culprit. A security guard picked out a 15-year-old and sent him up to the stage, where Akon hoisted him onto his shoulders and flung him into the crowd.

The boy landed on Abby Rosa, who told the Poughkeepsie Journal she was later found to have a concussion. She said she has hired a lawyer and spoken to Fishkill police.

The singer’s Manhattan lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, released a statement a few days after the June 3 concert at Dutchess Stadium saying there was no basis for criminal charges. A call to his office Thursday evening wasn’t immediately returned.

In April, Akon drew criticism for having on-stage simulated sex with a 14-year-old girl at a concert in Trinidad. He later apologized, saying he didn’t realize the girl was underage. The incident led Verizon to withdraw its sponsorship of Akon’s tour with Gwen Stefani, with whom he performs on the hit song “The Sweet Escape.”

Doctors unable to reattach finger torn from purse snatching

A Tucker man was being held in the Gwinnett County Jail without bond Friday after allegedly tearing a finger off a woman’s hand during a Wednesday afternoon purse snatching.

The incident occurred about 2 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of a Kroger store on Five Forks Trickum Road in Lilburn, Gwinnett police Cpl. Illana Spellman said.

Spellman said the 55-year-old victim, whose name has not been released, was walking to her car when the suspect drove up beside her in a 1988 Ford Crown Victoria.

“While remaining in the vehicle, the suspect suddenly snatched her purse and continued to drive away,” Spellman said. “As the suspect drove away, one of the victim’s fingers was pulled off.”

Surgeons attempted to reattach the severed finger, but were unsuccessful, Spellman said Friday.

Police later arrested Caesare R. Pinkins, 21, she said.

She said detectives believe Pinkins snatched another woman’s purse in a similar manner at a Stone Mountain Target store on Monday. The victim in that case was not injured.

Pinkins has been charged with multiple felony counts of robbery and aggravated battery.

Police have arrested a woman they say stabbed two people at a Taco Bell in the city’s south end Sunday night.

Shaunee Tubbs turned herself in Monday afternoon. Shively Police say she got into an argument that turned violent, and that she attacked two people at the restaurant on Dixie Highway and Gagel Avenue.

Police say it was a domestic dispute.

Twenty years after her allegations of a racially charged rape became a national flash point, Tawana Brawley’s mother and stepfather want to reopen the case, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The Rev. Al Sharpton was an advocate for Brawley in the racially charged case that drew national attention.

Glenda Brawley and Ralph King want to press New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer and state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to re-examine the November 1987 incident, which a state grand jury ultimately concluded was a hoax, the Daily News reported.

“New York state owes my daughter. They owe her the truth,” said Glenda Brawley. She reiterated her stance that her daughter was indeed raped by a group of white men who smeared her with feces and scrawled racial epithets on her body.

Representatives for Spitzer and Cuomo did not immediately respond to telephone and e-mail messages.

Brawley was 15 when she went missing for four days from her home in Wappingers Falls, about 75 miles north of New York. After being found, she made the shocking allegation that she had been abducted and raped by six white law enforcement officials.

The case quickly made headlines and drew the attention of the Rev. Al Sharpton, who became an outspoken advocate for the teen.

But a special state grand jury found evidence Brawley had fabricated her story. A former Dutchess County prosecutor who had been implicated in the case later sued Brawley, Sharpton and other Brawley advisers for defamation, winning a $345,000 judgment against the advisers and a $185,000 judgment against Brawley.

A spokeswoman for Sharpton, who was held liable for $65,000 in the case, did not immediately respond to an e-mail message early Sunday. The former prosecutor’s attorney did not immediately return a telephone message.

Police have arrested a teenager they say is responsible for killing another teenager.

JaMorris Brandon Walker, 18, was arrested Tuesday for the murder of 18-year-old Zeric Harrison. Harrison was killed last weekend.

Walker was taken to Orlando police headquarters and being charged with first-degree murder.

Orlando police arrested a man who was spotted trying to steal from a city fire station early Wednesday.

A witness spotted a man inside the building on South Westmoreland Avenue at about 2 a.m. A police officer later found Larry G. Shingles, who matched the suspect’s description, in the area.

The officer had to chase Shingles down on foot to arrest him. He was taken to Orange County Jail, under charges of burglary and resisting arrest without violence.

I guess you thought he’d be a volunteer fireman heh? LOL – Yea right. When have you EVER seen a nigger volunteer for anything? Man Arrested after Setting Fire to Apartments

Early Saturday morning, Charlotte Fire Department responded to an apartment complex on West 26th Street after two fires were intentionally set. No residents were hurt in the fire.

Police arrested James Otis Gladden at the scene of the fire and charged him with fire degree arson, malicious use of explosive damage property and misuse of the 911 system.

His bail was set at $55,000.

A transient who robbed another man after asking him for a cigarette was arrested in front of the Central Florida Coalition for the Homeless shelter early Wednesday.

Orlando police said that Weston Jackson asked a 46-year-old man for the smoke in the 900 block of West Central Boulevard, but then snatched money from his hand and fled.

Police later found Jackson, 42, in front of the homeless shelter.

Jackson was taken to Orange County Jail, under one charge of robbery.

Orlando police, dispatched to a burglary at an occupied home, caught the thief walking down the street carrying his haul Tuesday night.

Officers were on their way to the reported crime at 621 W. South St. when they spotted a man toting a TV near Terry and Anderson streets.

Police arrested 50-year-old Johnny Howard on the spot.

He remained in Orange County Jail on Wednesday, on a charge of attempted burglary.

Former CMPD Officer LeShunda Austin was arrested again yesterday and faces three additional charges related to her filing a false police report earlier this month.

The additional charges include; filing a false police report, obstruction of justice and accessing a government computer in an attempt to defraud.

A weekend Halloween party that was advertised on MySpace got out of control. So much so in fact, it left one man shot in the neck and three tenants evicted.

Officials say the people at the party ranged in age from just 15 to 25. Deputies say that’s part of the problem with advertising a party on MySpace – you never know who will show up.

In this case, things got out of control and it could have cost one man his life.

Left with a bullet lodged in his neck, Dennis Walker says he’s lucky to have survived a weekend house party.

“It’s half an inch away from my spinal cord. They say I could have been dead,” said Walker.

Walker says he heard about the party from a friend. They got there shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday and within minutes everyone was asked to leave.

“There were people fighting everywhere and then gun shots started ringing in the air. So after that I was on the ground,” said Walker.

Monday night, NBC2 went to the Golden Gate Estates house where it all took place. We found beer cans and crime tape still left behind.

Neighbors say parties happen there all the time.

“Two a.m. – 3 a.m. I hear the loud people,” said neighbor Felix Iglesias.

The owner of the home, Yonel Joseph, says he leased it to three women in their late teens to early twenties. He says he knew about the partying, but didn’t know this one was being advertised on MySpace.

“Anybody could come over here and now I do not know how many lives I would be responsible for,” said Joseph.

The Collier County sheriff’s report states a number of people under the age of 18 were at the party, including several from Golden Gate and Naples High schools.

Deputies say posting a party on MySpace can invite a dangerous situation and a lot of unwanted guests.

“It was a huge mistake. It was a huge mistake,” said Joseph.

The home owner says he’s asked the three tenants to move out. Walker says he’ll think twice about parties put up on MySpace.

“I’m not going out anymore. I know that,” said Walker.

Deputies say they did not hand out any underage drinking tickets at the party.

LA man pleads not guilty in shooting death of pregnant girlfriend

LOS ANGELES—A man accused of shooting and killing his pregnant girlfriend while she was driving him and her two children pleaded not guilty Wednesday to two counts of murder.

Stephen Mark Picart, 33, is charged in the Sept. 23 death of Sharon Carter and the unborn baby believed to be his child. He also faces the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, but prosecutors have not decided whether they’ll seek the death penalty in the case.

Carter, 31, was shot in the back of the head as she was driving her sports utility vehicle in Watts. Authorities said they believe Picart was in the vehicle and arguing with his girlfriend before the shooting.

After she was shot, Carter’s SUV hit two cars and came to a stop. Her sons, ages 4 and 14, were not injured.

Rams Lineman Terrell Arrested, Cut From Team

A now former St. Louis Rams player remained in a Texas jail Tuesday night. Claude Terrell, 25, was charged with felony assault, for allegedly beating his wife in Webster, Texas, near Houston. He could face 2 to 10 years in prison if convicted.

The Rams cut Terrell from the team after the news broke; a team official citing on-field performance issues for the move, not the arrest.

The Webster police chief said authorities in St. Louis also issued a warrant for Terrell’s arrest for something that happened before he left town. There was no word on what that was as of news time Tuesday night.

Court records from Texas showed Terrell’s been heading down a road from the football field in St. Louis to a Texas jail almost since he got here. It could turn out to be a one-way trip after Terrell allegedly kicked his wife in the face, breaking her nose, shortly before 2:00 a.m. in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn in Webster.

” …grabbed her by the hair, dragged through the lobby out the front door,” said Webster Police Chief Ray Smiley.

He said Terrell, his wife and two children were staying at the La Quinta Inn next door; Terrell’s wife fled after the two had a verbal altercation in their room, hiding behind the counter at the Hampton Inn; Terrell found her there.

“As they got into the parking lot, the victim tells us she through herself on the ground so he couldn’t take her any place,” Smiley said. “Then as she was laying on the ground, he turned around and kicked her in the face.”

He said Terrell’s wife feared for her life.

Court records pointed to possible reasons why. They showed the 25-year old 2005 4th round draft pick of the Rams had previously been charged for earlier assaults on a family member, along with trespassing, even kidnapping; all charges dropped except an assault, for which he was on probation.

“He violated his probation in St. Louis. St. Louis issued an arrest warrant for him for violation of his probation,” Smiley said.

Suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has put his lakefront suburban Atlanta estate on the market for 4.5 million dollars.

A listing posted at Realtor.com says the embattled sports figure’s property at Sugarloaf Country Club in Duluth has seven bedrooms, eight and a half baths and has an estimated monthly mortgage payment of $23,206.

Gwinnett County property records show Vick purchased the home in April of 2005 for 3.7 million dollars. His yearly tax bill on the 1.5-acre estate is $26,720.

Vick pleaded guilty in August to federal charges of bankrolling a dogfighting ring in Virginia. He is scheduled to be sentenced December 10 in the federal dogfighting case.

He is expected to get at least a year in prison. He’s also facing two state-level felony dogfighting charges in Virginia, which carry possible sentences of up to five years each.

He was suspended indefinitely without pay by the NFL, besides losing millions in lucrative endorsement deals, most notably with Nike.

When I was a small child one of the worst things I had ever seen was the shooting of animals at my grandparents farm. Every once in awhile my grandfather would just walk up to one, say a few words to it, rub it a little bit and then shoot it in the head. I always protested but to no avail. He said he had to kill it because the animal was suffering – it was either too sick or too old. I thought back of how men would shoot their horses for the same reason, the animal was too sick, too old or had wounds/injuries that would never heal. I finally realized they were doing the best they could for the animal, rather than allow it to suffer for long periods of time, they shot it to relieve it any more pain. As hard as it was for me to understand as a child, I finally did – it was the humane thing to do.

On the other hand, I saw animals either shot, cut or their necks rung while being slaughtered for food. It didn’t matter the suffering in these cases. But, I understood, what had to be done had to be done. That was then, this is now, in this modern world, there is no rhyme nor reason to allow unnecessary suffering of animals, even the ones we use as food – at least not in the slaughtering process. And there’s certainly no reason for these nigs and spigs to hold dog-fighting and cock-fighting contest on our soil. This is a first rate nation, if these third worlders are too stupid to understand that, send their brown or black asses to a country that allows it, while denying them the right to return. And the ancient jewish method of Kosher slaughter? – exactly how is that important to American or to Americans? One of the world’s most eminent scientists was embroiled in an extraordinary row last night after he claimed that black people were less intelligent than white people and the idea that “equal powers of reason” were shared across racial groups was a delusion.

James Watson, a Nobel Prize winner for his part in the unravelling of DNA who now runs one of America’s leading scientific research institutions, drew widespread condemnation for comments he made ahead of his arrival in Britain today for a speaking tour at venues including the Science Museum in London.

The 79-year-old geneticist reopened the explosive debate about race and science in a newspaper interview in which he said Western policies towards African countries were wrongly based on an assumption that black people were as clever as their white counterparts when “testing” suggested the contrary. He claimed genes responsible for creating differences in human intelligence could be found within a decade.

The newly formed Equality and Human Rights Commission, successor to the Commission for Racial Equality, said it was studying Dr Watson’s remarks ” in full”. Dr Watson told The Sunday Times that he was “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours – whereas all the testing says not really”. He said there was a natural desire that all human beings should be equal but “people who have to deal with black employees find this not true”.

His views are also reflected in a book published next week, in which he writes: “There is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capacities of peoples geographically separated in their evolution should prove to have evolved identically.

Our wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so.”

The furore echoes the controversy created in the 1990s by The Bell Curve, a book co-authored by the American political scientist Charles Murray, which suggested differences in IQ were genetic and discussed the implications of a racial divide in intelligence. The work was heavily criticised across the world, in particular by leading scientists who described it as a work of ” scientific racism”.

Dr Watson arrives in Britain today for a speaking tour to publicise his latest book, Avoid Boring People: Lessons from a Life in Science. Among his first engagements is a speech to an audience at the Science Museum organised by the Dana Centre, which held a discussion last night on the history of scientific racism.

Critics of Dr Watson said there should be a robust response to his views across the spheres of politics and science. Keith Vaz, the Labour chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, said: “It is sad to see a scientist of such achievement making such baseless, unscientific and extremely offensive comments. I am sure the scientific community will roundly reject what appear to be Dr Watson’s personal prejudices.

“These comments serve as a reminder of the attitudes which can still exists at the highest professional levels.”

The American scientist earned a place in the history of great scientific breakthroughs of the 20th century when he worked at the University of Cambridge in the 1950s and 1960s and formed part of the team which discovered the structure of DNA. He shared the 1962 Nobel Prize for medicine with his British colleague Francis Crick and New Zealand-born Maurice Wilkins.

But despite serving for 50 years as a director of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island, considered a world leader in research into cancer and genetics, Dr Watson has frequently courted controversy with some of his views on politics, sexuality and race. The respected journal Science wrote in 1990: “To many in the scientific community, Watson has long been something of a wild man, and his colleagues tend to hold their collective breath whenever he veers from the script.”

In 1997, he told a British newspaper that a woman should have the right to abort her unborn child if tests could determine it would be homosexual. He later insisted he was talking about a “hypothetical” choice which could never be applied. He has also suggested a link between skin colour and sex drive, positing the theory that black people have higher libidos, and argued in favour of genetic screening and engineering on the basis that ” stupidity” could one day be cured. He has claimed that beauty could be genetically manufactured, saying: “People say it would be terrible if we made all girls pretty. I think it would great.”

The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory said yesterday that Dr Watson could not be contacted to comment on his remarks.

Steven Rose, a professor of biological sciences at the Open University and a founder member of the Society for Social Responsibility in Science, said: ” This is Watson at his most scandalous. He has said similar things about women before but I have never heard him get into this racist terrain. If he knew the literature in the subject he would know he was out of his depth scientifically, quite apart from socially and politically.”

Anti-racism campaigners called for Dr Watson’s remarks to be looked at in the context of racial hatred laws. A spokesman for the 1990 Trust, a black human rights group, said: “It is astonishing that a man of such distinction should make comments that seem to perpetuate racism in this way. It amounts to fuelling bigotry and we would like it to be looked at for grounds of legal complaint.”

21-Year-Old Convicted In Restaurant Murder

A 21-year-old man accused in the shooting death of a fellow employee at a Regency-area restaurant last year was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder.

A jury took only 30 minutes to return a verdict on Kyle Bass. He was charged in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old DaShane Harris on June 16, 2006 at La Salsa restaurant.

Harris was shot in the back of the head after the restaurant closed.

Duplin County authorities says they’re made three arrests in the murder of a taxi cab driver.

Jesse Faison, Jr. was found dead in his cab back on May 25th on Cool Springs Road in southern Duplin County.

Police today announced three people have been charged with Faison’s robbery, kidnapping and murder.

Charged are Anthony Kenan, Jr. 18 of Teachey, Rochael Dobson, 18 of Wallace, and Brandon Rice, 20 of Rose Hill.

Deputies say the trio face charges of 1st degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, 1st degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon

Dobson is in the Sampson County jail, with the two men are in the Duplin County jail.

The sheriff said continuing information coming from the community, along with information from Warsaw police, the State Bureau of Investigation & the Sampson

County Sheriff’s Office helped break the case.

Clearwater, Florida — A teenager accused of killing a Clearwater man faces three more charges of attempted first degree murder, officials reported Tuesday.

The new counts against Gaylord Shaw, 19, were announced just after he made his first appearance in court on the original first degree murder charge, and was remanded to the jail without bond.

Police said he fired shots into a car at the corner of N. Betty Lane and Springdale Street.

The car took off and crashed into a power pole blocks away. Michael Scott, 23, died at a local hospital and his brother, Antinio, 24, was hospitalized in stable condition, suffering injuries in the crash.

Grandmother Says Boy Was High When Child Was Shot

The grandmother of a teenager accused of shooting a 6-year-old girl to death said he should have been in custody at the time the little girl died.

Jordan Goodwin, 14, is accused of shooting and killing Alazia Alford, 6.

Goodwin was in court on Tuesday afternoon on unrelated charges. His grandmother, Jean James, accompanied him and spoke quietly with him as he hung his head and listened to the proceedings of a detention hearing.

James said afterward that her grandson should have been in custody on Friday when Alazia was killed.

“They had him in custody, and they and used a private escort service to transport him from the Council Bluffs Jail to the Youth Center, and he got out of the car,” James said.

Investigators Arrest Suspect In Cold Case Murder

Investigators in Washington County have made a break in a cold case.

Six years ago, an elderly woman was beaten and stabbed to death in her apartment and now police have arrested a suspect.

Vanzella Smith, 83, was described as feisty and funny, known to everyone as “Grandma Van.” Her life came to a horrific end when she was murdered in her Maple Terrace apartment in Washington.

Police arrested Samuel Pierce, 41, in New Haven, Connecticut. Pierce moved into the apartment above Smith’s 17 days before her death.

His DNA was collected at the crime scene. Police say it popped up as a match in a computer database system. He registered his DNA in Connecticut under the state’s sex offender law.

Pierce served time there for an alleged sexual assault and moved to Washington County, shortly before Smith’s killing.

Since the murder, Pierce moved back to Connecticut. Police from Pennsylvania went there and arrested him. He’s now in the Washington County Jail on a criminal homicide charge.

Arrest Made in Harnett County Murder

The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man in connection with the murder of a Dunn man.

Tony McKoy, Jr. was taken into custody Sunday.

The body of Tyrone Devon Turrintin, 25, was found in the yard of a Dunn home at 184 Mixon Road on Thursday, Sept. 20.

McKoy, 24, has been charged with first degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.

He is being held at the Harnett County Detention Center with no bond.

A routine probation visit quickly becomes a manhunt and Eyewitness News has exclusive details. Metro used more than 10 patrol cars and dozens of officers, plus a helicopter to track him down.

Deandre Lewis showed up to the probation office high on drugs, and that’s when the chase began. It was a frenzied run from the law, jumping fences, climbing over walls, sliding down poles and finally ending up in the waiting hands of police.

The Department of Public Safety says Lewis was fulfilling part of his probation by reporting to the office on Belrose. Already facing two charges of grand larceny, he made it worse by showing up with narcotics in his system.

After his arrest for the drug violation, Lewis complained to officers his handcuffs were too tight. The officer loosened them, and Lewis hit him and ran off. Lewis bolted into the nearby neighborhood.

Police used a helicopter and set up a small perimeter. Lieutenant Adam Page with DPS says Lewis’ attitude was almost expected.

“It wasn’t his first violation. So, yes, after a couple, we have a very low tolerance for offenders with his type of history to continuously re-offend,” said Lt. Page.

Page says Lewis has not only shown up high before, but he has also tried to escape authorities in the past. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution. He will now likely face the full punishment for the grand larceny charges along with a felony for being high and a felony for evading police.

Metropolitan Police: Operation Full Stride

WASHINGTON, DC — If you see more police on foot in your neighbotood today, they are part of Operation Full Stride.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier and Mayor Adrian Fenty kicked off the new foot patrol program yesterday. It goes into effect today bringing over 200 police officers to the streets. This is exactly what neighbors call for at every community meeting.

The detention of Floyd Brown, who has spent 14 years locked up despite not being convicted of a crime, has cost state taxpayers more than $2.3 million, according to state records requested by the Observer.

The state Department of Health and Human Services says the bill for holding Brown in Dorothea Dix mental hospital in 2006 alone was $689 a day — the same for any of the hospital’s patients — or $251,485 for the year.

Doctors there have said it’s unlikely Brown, who is retarded and has an IQ of 50, will ever have the mental capacity to go to court. That means the 43-year-old could stay in Dix for the rest of his life.

During Brown’s stay, records show, Dix officials have asked Anson County District Attorney Michael Parker at least a half-dozen times to allow Brown to be moved to a less expensive group-care facility near his home.

Parker refused. His reasoning: If Brown is well enough to be transferred from Dix, he’s well enough to stand trial.

“The district attorney has resisted any efforts to resolve the situation, apparently being quite content to leave Mr. Brown in his present setting ad infinitum,” Dix psychiatrist Dr. Freerk Wouters noted in 1995.

The hospital’s rates have tripled since 1993, when Brown was charged with killing 80-year-old Katherine Lynch of Wadesboro. The daily rate then was $215.

By comparison, the N.C. Department of Correction spends an average of $68.45 a day per inmate, or about $24,986 a year. A death-penalty inmate costs taxpayers about $29,000 a year, the state says.

The jail in Brown’s home county of Anson, about 55 miles southeast of Charlotte, spends far less, $41.80 a day per inmate.

The cost of staying at Dix, in Raleigh, is so much higher because it’s a hospital, not just a detention facility.

A judge in Durham County has dismissed murder and robbery charges against a mentally retarded defendant who’s been in custody for 14 years.

Judge Orlando F. Hudson Jr. ordered the release of Floyd Brown, 43, from a state mental hospital, where he’s been in custody since 1993 without a trial.

Brown was charged in the death and robbery of 80-year-old Katherine Lynch, who was found beaten to death in 1993. He was found at the time to be incompetent to stand trial, and has remained in state custody at Dorothea Dix Hospital ever since as prosecutors refused to drop the case against him.

Judge Drops Murder Charge Against Mentally Retarded Man

Durham — A Durham County judge has dismissed charges against a Dorothea Dix patient awaiting trial for 14 years on a murder charge.

Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson on Monday also ordered that Floyd Lee Brown, 43, of Anson County, be released from custody after a hearing in which defense attorneys argued that Brown’s detention was unlawful.

Brown was arrested in 1993 in connection with the beating death of 80-year-old Katherine Lynch, but he was deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial.

Authorities have said that Brown confessed to the crime, but his attorneys argued he did not have the mental capacity to do so. Prosecutors maintained that Brown was dangerous and refused to drop the case against him.

It was a violent Valentine’s Day crime spree, allegedly carried out by four teenagers who were students at East High School.

Now, a state grand jury for Shelby County has indicted the teens for a day full of violence, from Memphis to Germantown.

Won Pierce, Tommy Brown, and Deandre Clark were indicted each on two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of attempted aggravated robbery. and aggravated assault.

A fourth co-defendant, Preston Williams, was indicted for aggravated robbery.

“We’ve seen an increase in violent crimes by juveniles in the last couple of years,” said Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons. “In fact, in the last two years, we’ve seen about a 35 percent increase.”

The crime spree on Valentine’s Day started in the parking lot of a Germantown shopping center, where a victim was attacked and beaten.

Later that morning, a second victim, a teacher at Germantown High, was robbed at gunpoint while walking out of the school to her vehicle.

A third victim was then robbed at gunpoint at Oak Court Mall.

The day of crime ended with a 70-year-old woman being knocked down and dragged by her purse strap in the parking lot of Hickory Ridge Mall.

Due to the violent nature of these crimes, Juvenile Court transferred Brown and Clark, both 17 at the time, to be prosecuted as adults.

“Unfortunately sometimes we have juveniles who have engaged in serious violent crimes, and we feel they need to be held accountable,” Gibbons said.

Bond for all four teenagers was set at $50,000. Two are out on bond, while the other two remain incarcerated.

Spartanburg County deputies are looking for a man who they say shot a teen in the head Wednesday night.

Deputies said it happened in the Una area on Seminole Drive around 11 p.m. They said 16-year-old Eric Jones asked Roy Scruggs for a light and Scruggs pulled out a gun and shot the teen in the head.

Scruggs is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill.

Jones was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Anyone with information about Scruggs’ whereabouts is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 58-CRIME.

An Orlando man accused of selling cocaine near a day care has been arrested more than 100 times and is considered by the Orange County sheriff as the “poster child” for what’s wrong with the nation’s justice system.

George Dallas was recently taken into custody on felony drug charges at the Lake Mann Apartments located at 701 South Ivey Lane after he was found hiding in a bathtub at a friend’s apartment.

Investigators said Dallas is a violent, repeat offender who has been arrested more than 100 times on a variety of charges, including homicide.

“Mr. Dallas should be the poster child for this nation’s crime epidemic,” Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary said.

“(Dallas’) arrests range anywhere from drug charges all the way to murder,” Orange County sheriff’s Division Chief Ken Cox said.

Cox said 17 of Dallas’ arrests include felony convictions. He said many of the crimes committed in Central Florida are by repeat offenders.

“We tend to encounter the same individuals over and over again.” Cox said.

Recently, three men were arrested at the Caribe Royale hotel in Orange County.

“Those three individuals combined had about 86 arrests,” Cox said.

Cox said funding for law enforcement and the justice system needs to change.

“The sentencing guidelines need to be increased for violent crimes by habitual offenders,” Cox said. “This individual had no business being out of jail. He has pages and pages of arrests.”

Dallas also collects disability checks, Local 6 News has learned.

“The real, true victims here are citizens and our communities,” Cox said. “This individual should not be on our streets.”

Babysitter arrested after child burned

Authorities question her story of how the boy was burned while she was giving him a bath.

Second-degree burns covered both the baby’s feet and ankles like stockings, police said.

The phenomenon, known as a ***“stocking glove” burn, is commonly associated with child abuse: A child does not step into burning water with both legs, the theory goes.

But that’s what Ruth Williams said happened Tuesday morning when her 20-year-old daughter tried to give an 18-month-old a bath.

“You know how 1-year-olds are,” Williams said Thursday.

Maggie Nicole Williams of 3538 N 20th St. was arrested Wednesday a day after her mother called 911 to report that the boy they were babysitting had been burned while getting a bath.

Williams was charged with aggravated child abuse and was being held at the Orient Road Jail late Thursday on $25,000 bail.

The boy Williams was babysitting is still in the hospital, said a family friend. The boy’s young mother is with him.

Police say Maggie Williams boiled a pot of water and poured it into a metal pail, then intentionally immersed the child in the water.

“He just started crying, whining crying,” Ruth Williams said of the incident. “He didn’t scream. And she said, ‘Oh mom, he’s peeling!’”

But Ruth Williams, who said she was ironing the boys clothes at the time it happened, tells the story differently than police. Her daughter boiled the water on the stove, she said, because the gas was out at their home, 3539 N 20th St. Apt. A, in Belmont Heights Estates.

As Maggie Williams was about to mix in the cold water, the baby stepped in on his own.

“It was an accident,” Ruth Williams, 51, said as she sat on her front porch. “I have kept children all my life, I never even hit my child. I don’t believe in hurting children.”

Originally, Tampa Fire Rescue crews said the babysitter told them she was running hot water to warm a bath when she looked away, and the boy stepped in.

But Tampa police and Dr. William Brooks from Tampa General Hospital’s child protection team told investigators the injuries were “inflicted,” according to an arrest report.

Officer J.C. Bazter’s report said that when he confronted Maggie Williams with the inconsistencies in her story, she “admitted she heated the water on the stove and placed the victim into the water. But the remaining details of her story were inconsistent with the doctor’s evaluation.”

Ruth Williams says law enforcement is telling “nothing but lies.”

Her daughter, she said, is a church-going woman, a college student, who has always made straight A’s and never been in trouble. State records show this is Maggie Williams’ first arrest.

Man Called ‘Poster Child’ For What’s Wrong With Justice System

A man who has been arrested more than 100 times, including an arrest three days ago, and who the Orange County sheriff has called a “poster child” for what’s wrong with the justice system, was released from jail on Friday, Local 6 News reported.

George Dallas, 29, was arrested Tuesday on felony drug charges at the Lake Mann Apartments located at 701 South Ivey Lane after he was found hiding in a bathtub at a friend’s apartment, according to officials. Dallas was accused of selling cocaine in front of a day care.

The arrest warrant for Dallas stated “no bond” on it, but the judge who signed the warrant modified it so that bond would be set at Dallas’ initial appearance.

Investigators said Dallas is a violent, repeat offender who has been arrested 108 times over the last eight years on a variety of charges, including homicide.

“What’s going to keep him behind bars? Does he have to go kill somebody else again to finally put him behind bars? I mean, tell us what he has to do,” Orange County sheriff’s Cpl. Keith Vidler said.

“Mr. Dallas should be the poster child for this nation’s crime epidemic,” Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary said.

“The system is failing us. It’s failing me,” Vidler said.

Police have made an arrest in a crime that outraged the community. A convenience store clerk was shot in the face, even after he’d cooperated with the robbers and given them all the money in the register.

The man arrested in the case went before a judge Tuesday morning. That cold-blooded chilling crime took place inside a store back in July. Steve Inman, 60, was shot point blank in the head with a rifle. He gave the crooks everything — $83. The gunman shot him anyway.

Metro says the triggerman is 28-year-old Deonte Marshall, who was arrested in California. He’s had run-ins with the law before. He also has a mug shot for being a registered sex offender.

Steve Inman was a husband, father, grandfather and a Vietnam vet before he was shot. Marshall’s no longer free now.

A cuffed Marshall appeared before a judge to face seven serious charges for his alleged role in this violent crime. Marshall didn’t say much — just a few words. He told the judge he understood the charges. She then appointed him a public defender.

Who could forget this crime caught on camera — two robbers ordering Steve Inman around at gunpoint. Inman complied with their demands only to be shot anyway.

He’s still fighting for life and this has been a trying time for Inman and his entire family.

“You’re grateful that the guy’s off the street and the number one thing you think of is that he’s not going to, hopefully, be able to decide to do this to someone else in the future,” said Leigh Golson-Inman, the victim’s daughter-in-law.

“Putting him in jail doesn’t make Steve’s leg work today or it doesn’t get him off the ventilator, and it doesn’t get rid of the double lung pneumonia or the bacterial infections, or the fact that he’s been lying in a hospital bed for three months,” she added.

That violent night continues to haunt Inman’s family and he’ll forever be affected by this crime. His daughter-in-law told Eyewitness News Tuesday that Steve being able to just move his finger is a big step. He’s been bed-ridden in four different hospitals. Medical bills are mounting.

A woman and her daughter have been charged with boarding a school bus Friday and assaulting a 13-year-old boy, police say.

St. Petersburg police today released a video of a woman and teenage girl boarding a school bus Friday and hitting a 13-year-old boy.

Karen L. Barber, 34, of 774 17th Ave. S., was charged with battery, as was her 15-year-old daughter, said St. Petersburg police spokesman George Kajtsa. The daughter’s name was not released because she is a minor and was charged with a misdemeanor.

The boy who was slapped had fought with Barber’s 12-year-old son on the bus the day before, said St. Petersburg police spokesman Bill Proffitt. Barber’s son had picked up a folder that belonged to the other boy and wouldn’t give it back, so the other boy punched him, Kajtsa said.

Barber was angry over the incident and that night went to the home of the other boy and threatened to shoot up the house, Kajtsa said. The mother of the other boy didn’t take the threat seriously, Kajtsa said.

About 9:30 a.m. Friday, Barber and her daughter followed the school bus in a car and honked the horn, Proffitt said. The bus driver pulled over and stopped in the 1500 block of 16th Street South, the spokesman said.

Barber pulled in behind the school bus, got out and walked to door, Proffitt said. The bus driver opened the door to see what the pair wanted, the spokesman said. Barber pushed the door open and boarded the bus with her daughter, Proffitt said.

The video shows Barber walking up to the 13-year-old boy and berating him:

“I heard what you said,” Barber tells him. “If you put your hands on my son, … I’m going to come down … with my nephew and I’m going to beat … [you], You wait.”

She then tells her son, who is sitting in the seat across the aisle from the 13-year-old: “If he puts his hand on you, … you let me … know.”

Barber then proceeds to leave, but the 13-year-old apparently says something, the video shows, so she returns.

“You think it’s funny? You think its funny? I’m not kidding around? …. You think its funny?” she asks.

Barber, using her index finger, then tapped the boy on the forehead while cursing him and slapped him once, Proffitt said. Her daughter then slapped him two times with such force that the blows caused his head to turn, Kajtsa said.

The two left the bus, Proffitt said.

Barber’s family is related to the victim’s family, Kajtsa said.

At some point, the bus driver, John Simajchel, tells the pair to stop. He has been temporarily reassigned to a position where he has no contact with children as school officials investigate whether his allowing Barber on the bus was appropriate.

A man answering Barber’s telephone today said she was not commenting publicly on the incident, choosing instead to tell her side of the story in court.
