One neighbor who grew up with Courtney Lockhart in his eastern Alabama town describes him as a troublemaker who liked to pick on younger boys.

Another says Lockhart seemed like a good kid who mowed his family’s lawn and always said hello to her at the Wal-Mart.

Both neighbors, however, were taken aback to learn that the 23-year-old from Smiths Station, Ala., had been charged Saturday with capital murder in a case everyone in town had heard about — the shooting death of Marietta’s Lauren Burk, a freshman at Auburn University.

“That’s crazy,” said another neighbor, Thomas Moore, 19, who said Lockhart bullied him as a youngster, too. “I wouldn’t have believed that.”

Lockhart’s arrest came three days after Burk was found fatally wounded Tuesday night along a highway not far from the university.

Burk’s murder drew enough interest that Auburn police assembled a task force of local, state and federal investigators to find her killer.

But it was police officers from Phenix City who caught and arrested Lockhart on Friday. Phenix City is about a 35-mile drive from the Auburn campus.

“I wouldn’t call it a lucky break,” Auburn police Assistant Chief Tommy Dawson said Saturday. “I would call it a blessing from God.”

Police held a news conference in Auburn late Saturday morning to announce that Lockhart has been charged with three crimes: capital murder during a kidnapping, capital murder during a robbery and capital murder during an attempted rape.

The announcement came less than six hours before Burk was set to be memorialized at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta. Her funeral is 5:30 p.m. today at Marietta’s Temple Kol Emeth.

Lockhart’s case will be presented to a grand jury on May 5. He is being held in the Russell County jail but is expected to be moved next week to the jail in Lee County, where records show he served time in 2002 for harassment.

Lockhart did not know the 18-year-old Burk, and he acted alone, police said. Aside from that, police are releasing few details.

Dawson would not say how investigators linked Lockhart to the crime. He did say police have “a lot of evidence,” but declined to elaborate.

“We have the right individual in jail,” Dawson said. “I’m 100 percent sure of that.”

N.C. police circulate photo of possible suspect in Carson slaying

North Carolina authorities said Saturday they continue to pursue “several leads” in the shooting death of 22-year-old Athens native Eve Marie Carson.

Police investigating the death of Carson, the student body president at the University of North Carolina, are circulating a photo of a possible suspect.

Sgt. L.B. Evans, the watch commander in the neighboring city of Durham, said his department was given the photo.

Saturday night at the UNC-Duke basketball game in Durham — amid the hubbub of the teams’ huge rivalry — there was a moment of silence. UNC players had “Eve” stitched in small blue circles on their uniforms, and people on both sides of the court wore Carolina blue lapel ribbons to honor Carson’s life.

Chapel Hill (N.C.) Police Chief Brian Curran said detectives don’t have the names of any suspects.

Twice in the hours after learning Carson had been shot to death early Wednesday on a city street not far from campus, thousands of students, staff and faulty gathered to mourn her death. The tears continued to flow Friday and Saturday, and it’s likely the school will hold another memorial service after students return from next week’s spring break.

University Chancellor James Moeser plans to lead a delegation of senior administrators to services this weekend for Carson at her home in Athens. The Board of Trustees, meanwhile, has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in her death.

Authorities say they do not believe there’s a connection between the shooting deaths of Carson and Lauren Burk, two Georgia natives attending out-of-state colleges.

Friday afternoon, Curran said his department has been in contact with authorities in Auburn to discuss “surface similarities” between the deaths. Burk was a Auburn University freshman from Marietta.

“We don’t believe they are connected,” Curran said at a Friday news conference.

Carson was shot to death early Wednesday. “We’re very hopeful that we will” solve the case, Curran said Friday afternoon during a half-hour update on the status of the case:

- Police have Carson’s laptop computer and are also looking into use of her credit card or cards, Curran said.

- 911 tapes of the two calls made after shots were fired will be released.

- There are no suspects in the case but investigators are following leads in search of clues that will lead them to Carson’s killer.

- The medical examiner’s initial examination did not reveal signs of a struggle between Carson and her killer.

- Carson was alone before her death. Her roommates had gone out at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, and had invited her along, but Carson stayed home to study. There was no sign of a break-in there, Curran said.

Police say they’ve caught the man who murdered a Scranton woman and scattered her body parts along two highways in two separate counties. State Police have charged 33 year old Charles Hicks with murdering Deanna Marie Null and dismembering her body. Hicks is currently at Monroe County Correctional Facility where he’s being held without bail. Bags containing Null’s remains were found scattered along interstates 380 and 80 in Monroe and Lackawanna Counties two months ago.

Tobyhanna man charged with killing, dismembering woman

More than a month after a woman’s dismembered body was found in garbage bags along Interstates 380 and 80, police charged a Tobyhanna man today with her homicide.

Police arrested Charles Ray Hicks, 33, after allegedly finding disembodied hands in his apartment.

Hicks, who has lived on the 100 block of Prospect Street in Coolbaugh Township since going to work for a contractor at the Tobyhanna Army Depot on Jan. 2, was charged with homicide, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence and abuse of corpse in the slaying of Deanna Null, 36, according to court documents.

“They got the wrong man,” Hicks, formerly of Texas, told reporters after his arraignment in Stroudsburg this afternoon.

A man is now charged with the murder of a woman whose remains were found scattered along two interstate highways in January. Investigators said they found two human hands in the man’s home.

The arrest comes a month and a half after the shocking discovery along Interstates 380 and 80 in the Poconos.

PennDOT workers made the first gruesome find on I-380 in January. In the end, body parts were found in eight different spots, spanning 15 miles of road.

Investigators later identified the victim as Deanna Marie Null, who had ties to Williamsport and Scranton.

Police arrested Charles Hicks, 33, from the Tobyhanna area this morning and charged him with murder. The break in the case came just over the past 48 hours. Authorities said Hicks not only killed Null, he also cut up her remains.

“The guys got the wrong guy,” Hicks said after his arrest.

Police disagree and said they found evidence inside the Hicks’ home that links him to the murder of Deanna Null.

An investigation showed the 36-year-old woman was killed, then her remains cut up and scattered like trash along two major highways in our area.

Police said all of the victim’s body parts were found except her hands.

When officers search Hicks’ rental home in Tobyhanna they found what they believe to be Null’ssevered hands wrapped in newspaper and stuffed inside a wall.

Pay could be withheld from Marion County Coroner Dr. Kenneth Ackles (pictured) under a new state law that requires coroners to receive additional training.

A City-County Council committee debated the controversial move at a heated meeting Tuesday night, 6News’ Rick Hightower reported.

Ackles has not completed the training requirement, and the law indicates that the county can keep him from getting paid until he does.

“It’s the coroner’s obligation to present to us a certificate or some type of evidence saying he’s completed the training, and we don’t have that,” said Republican Councilor Ryan Vaughn.

Democrats argued that the existing law said the council can’t alter the pay of elected officials, but their motion to table the matter failed.

The Legislature passed the law in the aftermath of a tragic crash involving Taylor University students in which two of the victims were misidentified by coroner investigators.

Ackles was not at the meeting, but his attorney, Gregory Gadsen, said the law is confusing.

“The statute was poorly drafted,” Gadsen said. “There’s a conflict in the law, and they didn’t adequately anticipate this conflict and that’s the problem. I feel for the council, because they’re placed in a difficult position.”

In a party line vote, Republicans voted to deny the coroner’s pay until he completes the training.

The committee amended its vote to exclude some deputy coroners who get that title loosely, including maintenance personnel and other staff not involved in death investigations.

The committee vote moves the measure on to the full council. Last week, Ackles pulled out of a race for re-election as coroner.

A jury convicted an Indianapolis man on murder and neglect charges in connection with the beating death of a four-year-old boy.

Investigators say Christopher Montgomery became upset when Elijah Simpson sucked his thumb and “hog tied” the child’s ankles and wrists together with rope. Prosecutors say Montgomery threw the child on the tile floor.

The boy’s grandfather told Eyewitness News partners at The Indianapolis Star that Tuesday night’s guilty verdict served as justice for Simpson’s death.

The boy’s mother, Courtney Simpson, who testified in the case, faces up to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to felony neglect.

Parents of severely abused baby arrested

A seven-week-old baby is in Riley Hospital for Children recovering from what detectives are calling severe abuse.

The baby’s father Todd Spears,19, has been arrested on battery charges for allegedly abusing his son Jaden Spears. The baby’s mother Simone Hamilton,19, was arrested for neglect.

Police say Hamilton took Jaden to a clinic on the city’s northeast side for a bruise on his leg. According to police, the doctor noticed obvious signs of abuse and called authorities. Minutes later detectives arrested the baby’s parents.

The baby was rushed to Riley Hospital where doctors diagnosed several fractures in both legs, both feet and his left arm. The baby also had bleeding in the eyes.

“What’s alarming apparently some of these injuries in healing stage which is indicative of this baby was born on January 14, so seven weeks old going on as early as two or three weeks old,” said Lt. Jeff Duhamell with the Indianapolis Metro Police Department.

A West End man is facing allegations he had sexual contact with a two-year-old child.

29-year-old Tyree Huffman appeared in a Hamilton County courtroom on Wednesday on a felony count of gross sexual imposition.

Officials said the charges resulted after the child told it’s mother about contact that allegedly happened inside a West End apartment Tuesday afternoon.

According to statements made in court, Huffman allegedly had the child on his lap while he was naked.

Huffman’s bond was set at $50,000 and he was ordered to stay away from children.

A suspect linked to last year’s murder of a Lincolnville constable has his day in a Charleston courtroom. Police say Jerome Washington knew about the murder of Robert Bailey last May and that he used his car to help Walter Fayall (and Asia Prioleau) dispose of the body.

3 Charged In Attack On Pizza Delivery Man – Adult, 2 Juveniles Charged

Police have made three arrests in connection with an attack on a pizza delivery man.

Cendias Obrian Tucker, 18, and two juveniles are charged with strong-arm robbery and second-degree lynching in the attack that left 19-year-old Bruce Jett unconscious, with a broken nose. In South Carolina, lynching is defined as an attack on an individual by multiple assailants.

A West Tennessee teenager has been charged with first-degree murder after being accused of driving her car into a woman and pinning her against a wall.

Police say 18-year-old Latandria Kimble killed 24-year-old Andrea Pierce by ramming her against the wall of a carport on Sunday at the victim’s apartment in Ridgely.

Witnesses and family members told the State Gazette in Dyersburg that the victim had become involved in a romantic dispute between the suspect and a 17-year-old teenager.

Kimble is also accused of injuring the other teenager in a fight before the fatal incident.

Kimble was being held without bond in the Lake County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court March 12 for a preliminary hearing.

A St. Louis County judge sentenced Larry Flenoid on Friday to life in prison without parole for the murder of his girlfriend’s brother-in-law in 2000.

Judge Robert S. Cohen ran the jury-recommended life sentence consecutively to a life sentence that Flenoid, 57, is serving in a federal penitentiary.

And to those, Cohen added life sentences for two counts of armed criminal action, plus 30 years for kidnapping, 30 years for burglary and seven years for unlawful use of a weapon.

A jury convicted Flenoid of all those charges Jan. 9. Then jurors heard about 20 witnesses and deliberated for portions of two days before rejecting a death sentence and recommending life in prison without parole.


Flenoid fatally shot Ricky Forehand, 39, a decorated Desert Storm veteran, on May 6, 2000. Forehand was shot in the chest and arm at his home in the 10800 block of Hallwood Court in north St. Louis County.

Forehand’s sister-in-law Ursula Page fled to that address after Flenoid beat her up, she testified. After shooting Forehand, Flenoid abducted Page at gunpoint, but she escaped from a moving car.

Flenoid has a long criminal history of theft, robbery and drug trafficking. He is in prison on gun crime and escape convictions.

Serial rapist in Charlottesville area receives four life sentences

An Albemarle County man who committed a series of rapes over nearly a decade in the Charlottesville area was sentenced Tuesday.

Forty-year-old Nathan Antonio Washington was arrested in August after police spent years trying to match a suspect with DNA evidence in seven rapes.

Washington — a former meat cutter and newspaper deliveryman who is married and a father of four — pleaded guilty in December to charges related to four attacks in Charlottesville and one in Albemarle County.

Under a plea agreement, a judge will sentence Washington to four life sentences for the Charlottesville attacks. A separate agreement in Albemarle County calls for an additional 20 years in prison for breaking and entering in connection with a 2004 sexual assault.

A former police officer convicted of murdering his girlfriend and their unborn child tearfully apologized to her family Monday in front of the jury that will decide whether he lives or dies.

“It was a nightmare that will continue to haunt me for the rest of my days,” said Bobby Cutts, Jr., 30, reading from a prepared statement at the penalty phase of his murder trial.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I’m asking you to spare my life.”

Cutts was convicted on February 15 of the murder of girlfriend Jessie Marie Davis and the aggravated murder of the unborn girl Davis had planned to name Chloe.

Chloe’s slaying, which jurors found occurred during the commission of another crime, makes Cutts eligible for the death penalty

“To imagine that I was responsible for the death of Jessie, the mother of my children and my unborn daughter, is beyond any words that I can express,” Cutts said. “Words cannot bring them back, nor can they erase the pain I’ve caused, but I want to apologize.” Video Watch Cutts’ tearful apology »

He thanked Davis’ family for taking care of the other child he had with Davis. Blake was 2½ at the time of his mother’s murder in June 2007.

“I pray that you find peace and you someday find room for forgiveness,” he said.

Earlier, Cutts’ mother, Renee, Jones, had told jurors, “I don’t know what I would do without him.” She described Cutts as a former honor student who loved his job as a police officer.

“He was my firstborn, my only son,” Jones testified tearfully. “He means so much to me,” she continued. “He used to call me three, four times a day.” Watch Cutts react as his mother pleads for his life Video

Cutts’ punishment is being decided by the same jury of six men and six women who found him guilty. All the jurors are white; Cutts is African-American.

Cutts’ sister, father and one of his school teachers also testified.

Judge Charles E. Brown ordered jurors to return early Tuesday for attorneys’ closing arguments. When they arguments conclude, jurors will begin their deliberations.

If jurors do not agree on the death penalty, Cutts could receive a possible sentence of life in prison without parole or become eligible for parole in 20, 25 or 30 years.

Jones, was the first witness called to the stand by the defense. She said her son was a good youngster who was active in sports, Scouts and his church.

“I never had any trouble out of him,” she said as Cutts teared up at the defense table. She said Cutts’ relationship with his father deteriorated after the parents split.

A former teacher described Cutts as a social child given the nickname “Gobble” by his classmates. He was helpful in class, often volunteering to pick stray crayons up from the floor.

His father testified that he gave Cutts the nickname “Gobble” because as an infant he resembled ” a little Butterball turkey.” He said Cutts was a “gifted child” in school.

He blamed himself for the break up of his marriage, saying his drinking and gambling contributed to it.

Cutts’ own personal life was rocky, according to testimony. Davis was nine months pregnant when she disappeared in June 2007. Her body was found in a northeastern Ohio park after a 10-day search that brought national media attention

He is Blake’s father, as well as the father of the unborn girl, Chloe.

According to testimony, Cutts, 30, rolled Davis’ body in a comforter and dumped it in a park, leaving toddler son Blake in the house alone at the crime scene in a soiled diaper.

“Mommy’s in the rug,” Blake told police, according to testimony.

Tamir Hamilton Pleads Insanity in Sparks Killing

A man facing trial for the rape and killing of a Sparks teenager is pleading insanity.

Twenty-nine year old Tamir Hamilton entered his new plea Thursday during a hearing before Washoe District Judge Connie Steinheimer.

The judge also rejected a defense request to exclude a possible death penalty.

Hamilton’s is charged with sexually assaulting and killing 16-year-old Holly Jean Quick in her bedroom in 2006.

He was a friend and former roommate of the girl’s older sister.

His trial is scheduled to begin March 17.

Hamilton pleaded no contest last summer and was sentenced to life in prison for raping a University of Nevada, Reno student the month before Quick was killed.

“He wasn’t an honor student, but he graduated, he dabbled in and out of sports, he had jobs, he wasn’t employed at the time. His mother works for the RJ as head of security,” said Bryson.

Bryson wouldn’t say where things went wrong but did say Williams met the younger Davison at Cimarron High School and says now they are getting threats.

“Some of them are pretty outrageous, calling the kids terrorists and saying they should be lynched.” Bryson is calling for everyone to take a deep breath and wait for the facts. Facts he says even the D.A. doesn’t have yet.

“We show up and start talking about bail issues, and the D.A. stands up and says we are not ready to go, we need more time.”

“this is a situation where there really are no winners, their lives will never be the same no matter what happens from this point forward.”

The judge said Davison won’t get bail. But Williams still could. Authorities still need to interview him to determine if he’s a flight risk. Williams is expected to be back in court on Monday.

In the police report, Davison said Williams handed him the gun. He is very specific. He says Williams handed him the gun and said, “Are you gonna do it, you gonna get at them.”

Williams’ attorney says he’s going to plead not guilty to the accessory to murder charges.

N.Y. Mother Confesses To Drowning Children – Mammy Arrested In Hospital Bed

NEW CASSEL, N.Y. ― A single mother on Long Island has confessed Monday to murdering her three young children, police tell CBS 2.

Sources said 27-year-old Leatrice Brewer told police she drowned the victims. Brewer was arrested Sunday in her hospital bed, just hours after she led police to a grisly scene at her home.

“It was a disturbing scene. As officers entered the apartment they walked into the bedroom and found three small children obviously deceased in the bed,” Lt. Kevin Smith from the Nassau County Police Department said.

Found dead was 6-year-old Jewell Ward and her two half-brothers, 5-year-old Michael Demesyeaux and 1-year-old Innocent Demesyeaux. A source told WCBS-TV that the mother tried several different ways to kill the children, and that there was blood at the scene.

Roodgard Demesyeux, uncle to two of the children, said his brother is devastated at losing his children, allegedly at the hands of their mother.

“It’s horrific. You would never think something like that would happen; then again, she wasn’t always right in the head,” he said.

Friends and family describe Brewer as mentally unstable, often seen having conversations with herself and doing strange things.

“What goes through my mind is, why? Why would she do that to the kids? What could these kids have done to her to make her just take their lives like that?” said Sherry Brooks, another relative.

Brewer is being evaluated at Nassau University Medical Center and could be arraigned on murder charges from her bedside Monday afternoon.

The fathers of the children said they tried, but failed to get custody of their children. The Nassau County Department of Human Services said it’s working closely with the police department in their investigation.

A citizen’s group will look into how the investigation was handled into the near-fatal beating of Jill Marker at the Silk Plant Forest store in 1995 and the subsequent conviction of Kalvin Smith.

Amid growing questions about Smith’s innocence, Winston-Salem officials are finalizing details about a citizen’s committee that will review the investigation that led to his conviction.

“There’s enough questions about the case that having a fresh look at the case with citizens involved, it can’t hurt,” said Winston-Salem City Manager Lee Garrity.

Smith has served 12 years of a 28-year prison sentence after being convicted of assault and robbery in the 1995 beating Marker, a store clerk at the Silk Plant Forest, a store that is now closed but was once next to Toys ‘R’ Us at the shopping center on Silas Creek Parkway.

A man long sought by Port St. Lucie police on charges that he impregnated and then forced a home abortion on a 15-year-old girl was arrested Wednesday in Lakeland, where he had been hiding, authorities said.

Acting on a tip, members of a federal marshals task force arrested Papouche Edmond, 21, at an apartment complex on West 14th Street in Lakeland, according to arrest documents.

Edmond is from Fort Pierce, and it wasn’t clear how long he had been in Polk County.

He was booked into Polk County Jail and then transferred to the custody of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, where he was being held without bail.

Edmond is accused of impregnating a 15-year-old girl he met after a middle school dance in Fort Pierce in September and then forcing her to have an abortion that sent her to a hospital emergency room with heavy bleeding, according to police documents.

Gilbert L. “Duke” Thomas, 22, remains in jail without bond today after his arrest for the slaying of his mother.

Thomas appeared dazed in a video appearance before a Henrico Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court judge this morning. He is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his mother, Eloise Thomas, 47, who was found stabbed to death Feb. 13 in her apartment in the 5600 block of Crenshaw Road.

“That isn’t the boy I grew up with,” said Eric Thomas, a cousin of Duke Thomas, who attended the hearing with six other family members.

Duke Thomas was assigned a court-appointed lawyer this morning; he faces a life sentence if convicted. He has a May 12 preliminary hearing.

Thomas had been sought since the discovery of his mother’s body, and he was arrested Wednesday afternoon wandering the Pine Camp area off Azalea Avenue in Richmond.

Thomas had been wanted since last June on charges linked to a breaking and entering crime at his sister’s apartment in the same complex.

Friends blame drugs for brutal stabbing deaths

Waving around a bottle of pricey pills in a neighborhood where drugs rule may have been what got a South Halifax Avenue woman killed, her friends said Thursday.

The friends said Donna Sinclair, 51, and a man described only as “Junior” by neighbors, were stabbed multiple times Wednesday night in a tiny apartment just two or three blocks from the heart of where thousands of motorcyclists will soon gather for Bike Week.

Police Chief Mike Chitwood called the killings “the most gruesome crime scene I have ever been on” and said the motive was likely robbery.

But judging from the way Sinclair lived — “one step above homelessness,” according to Chitwood — the bottle of methamphetamines she had Wednesday morning may have been what the killer was after, said Sinclair’s neighbor Olivia Young and a friend of the victim who asked not to be identified because she fears for her safety.

“The reason someone would have killed Donna was to get those pills,” said the friend. “She was high and kind of crazy that morning — the same day she was killed.”

Records show Sinclair — who the friend said is the mother of a grown son and daughter — had been arrested for possession of cocaine and marijuana in the past. She had also been nabbed for prostitution.

Police would not confirm the victims’ identification Thursday. However, Donna Sinclair’s name is written across a mailbox at 139 S. Halifax Ave. where the killings occurred.

“This was methodical and deliberate,” Chitwood said describing the killings. “When you look at this blood-soaked crime scene, you gotta ask yourself, ‘What did these people do to deserve this?’ “

Police have charged 26-year-old Doug Blaine Matthews with two counts of first-degree murder. Matthews has a criminal drug and theft record locally and in North Carolina, where he recently lived.

Chitwood said investigators are also looking for “another suspect.”

According to a police report, investigators were called to a building of three apartments in a shabby stretch of South Halifax Avenue just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. When officers arrived, they saw Sinclair’s male friend lying on the ground just outside Apartment 1, yelling for help.

The man had been stabbed at least 12 times in the back and chest, Chitwood said.

When officers walked inside the unit, they found Sinclair on her bed with a pillow over her face. She had been stabbed in the chest about a dozen times.

Investigators then canvassed the neighborhood and learned from an anonymous source that the suspect was probably at 125 S. Wild Olive Ave., Chitwood said. That apartment is about three blocks from where Sinclair and her friend were killed.

The South Wild Olive residence also is directly across from the city’s beachside police precinct.

Both police and residents have said those neighborhoods, in the shadows of the city’s signature tourist spots, are rife with drugs. Police arrest an average of 200 to 300 people on the beachside every week, records show. The crimes include drug offenses.

Wednesday night when investigators arrived at the South Wild Olive address, they had no doubt it was the right place to find the suspect.

“We saw a pair of bloody sneakers,” Chitwood said. “When we went into the house, we saw a man in his boxer shorts lying on top of some bloody clothes.”

Detectives were able to identify the man as Matthews because he had a traffic citation in the back pocket of his black jeans. The ticket had been issued by Daytona Beach police in October 2007, Chitwood said. The name on the ticket was Matthews’. Police also found a blood-soaked white T-shirt wrapped around the male victim’s wallet, the chief said.

Chitwood said there were “blood patches all over the shower curtain.”

The chief said at least five people — including Matthews — were staying at the South Olive residence, a tiny four-room unit that was cluttered and filthy. He called Matthews and his roommates “a conglomeration of lowlifes.”

Investigators said when Matthews was being questioned, he admitted he had gone to Sinclair’s home Wednesday night. He said that when he got there, however, he saw her male friend stabbing her. Matthews said he then attacked the man to help Sinclair, police said.

Thursday afternoon, Sinclair’s neighbor Young and the close friend stood on Young’s front porch looking around uneasily as they talked about Sinclair and Matthews.

The friend said she would not give her name “because I have to survive on these streets.”

She did, however, describe Matthews as a menacing individual who drove around in a black Monte Carlo, threatening to “break people’s legs.”

“Donna was a little loopy, but she had a good heart,” the friend said. “She would help anybody.”

Young agreed: “She was the kind of person that would let people sleep on her couch if they had nowhere to go.”

Chitwood said the attack on Sinclair was particularly heinous because of her petite frame. She was only 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighed under 100 pounds, according to arrest records. Matthews meanwhile, is over 6 feet tall.

“The woman never had a chance,” Chitwood said.

A 26-year-old was arrested overnight and is facing murder charges for a double homicide in Daytona Beach. Police are searching for a second suspect.

Chief Mike Chitwood called the scene of the stabbing deaths of a man and woman at an apartment last night “one of the most gruesome” he’s ever seen.

“It was methodical and it was deliberate,” the chief said of the killings at a press conference this morning.

The stabbings occurred at an apartment at 139 S. Halifax Avenue. Police said the woman, who was found inside, was likely pinned on the bed with her head covered by a pillow while she was stabbed in the chest repeatedly.

Police believe the man tried to stop that attack and then was stabbed in the front, the back and while he was trying to get away. He stumbled outside, calling for help and saying he was dying.

Police have arrested Doug Blaine Matthews, of Daytona Beach. Investigators said witnesses at the crime scene provided clues that led them to Matthews.

He was found at a home on Wild Olive Avenue, about a half-mile from the crime scene. Police said they found bloody sneakers — with a distinctive Air Jordan pattern that also was found at the crime scene — at the Wild Olive home and other blood evidience.

Chitwood said it appeared Matthews, who was found hiding under a pile of clothes, had been trying to wash blood off of him in the shower.

Police also recovered a wallet they believe belongs to the male victim in Matthews’ possession. There was no obvious murder weapon inside the apartment, but police recovered three knives in the surrounding area. They are testing them to see if any was used in the killing.

Police said the motive appears to be robbery at this point.

A convicted child molester working as a pastor at a Pottstown YWCA is facing charges for failing to register under Megan’s Law, authorities said.

Guy Jones, 42, is a convicted child molester who was working as a pastor after serving time in prison.

Investigators said Jones is facing charges after failing to register under Megan’s Law.

According to police, Jones worked as a pastor of the City of Refuge Baptist Church, which rented space at the Pottstown YWCA.

“This is a situation where someone gave us information and we followed up on it, and someone in the community knew what he was doing and knew it was something about his background, they provided information and police were able to follow up on it,” Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said.

Jones is currently awaiting trial for assault, unlawful contact with a minor, and child endangerment stemming from an incident at his home in February of last year.

The YWCA said it plans to review its procedures for renting space.

Jacksonville police on Thursday released details about a double homicide that took place earlier in the week.

According to investigators, the two young men found dead in a Northwest Jacksonville home Tuesday afternoon were killed with a hammer.

The bodies of 16-year-old Randall Brown and 20-year-old Derrick Kings were discovered in a home on in the 9300 block of Sibbald Road.

The victim’s families waited nearly 24 hours before the victims were positively identified by authorities.

“My little brother found them, and he just started to scream. It was my cousin and my brother’s best friend, Randall. Whoever did it, I hope you get what you deserve,” King’s cousin, Michelle Major, said after the victims were identified.

Police said the owner of the Sibbald Road home, 54-year-old Raymond Bright, admitted to killing King and Brown.

They said Bright knew the victims, but they did not release a motive for the slayings.

According to authorities, Bright was found hiding in a closet of a former girlfriend’s house nearby.

Bright faces two counts of murder.

The Brunswick Police Department has made a fourth arrest in connection to the death of John Steven Mitchell, who was found dead in the 1600 block of Union Street on Dec. 1.

Keith Bernard Williams, 38, of Brunswick, was arrested Friday and charged with murder. Investigators had previously arrested Henry Bernard Robinson, Ralph A. Woods Sr. and Curtis Lee Grant, all of Brunswick, on murder charges.

Police officers found Mitchell’s body after receiving a call regarding a fight in progress.

Mitchell was living at the Salvation Army’s shelter in Brunswick.

Police began making arrests after receiving a tip from a resident at an apartment complex in mid-January, about a week after city officials had knocked on doors offering a $5,000 reward leading to the capture and conviction in any of the eight homicides in the city in 2007.

A 17-year-old robbery suspect seen coming out of a Hendricks Avenue convenience store early Thursday was shot and killed by a police officer. The three other suspects who fled the scene — all juveniles and Englewood High School students — were tracked down, arrested and are facing charges of armed robbery and felony murder.

It began as a holdup of the Gate Gas station in the 3900 block of Hendricks Avenue in Miramar just after 1 a.m. Sgt. Matt Nemeth, who was off-duty and driving home, saw the masked men running out of the store. Nemeth radioed for backup.

“He was in the right place at the right time, quite honestly,” Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Chief Dwain Senterfitt said.

One of the responding backup officers, Officer Bernard Clark, ordered the fleeing suspects to stop and show their hands. When the four continued to flee, Clark fired one shot, which missed.

When the suspects scattered, Clark pursued one of them.

“He encountered that individual with his hands positioned as if he were holding a gun,” Senterfitt said. “Officer Clark fired one more shot from his Glock. He struck the subject on time.”

Police said Kenneth Bernard Marion was transported to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, where he died.

Other officers, some using police dogs, rounded up the other three, later identified as Richard Douglas, 16, and Kenneth Duncan and Robert Wallace, both 17.

All three suspects are Englewood High School students.

While police are not sure if the man who was killed had a weapon, officers found two handguns — a 9 mm Glock and a .38-caliber revolver — on the residential street where the four subjects fled. They also recovered money, possibly stolen from the Gate station, in the area.

According to police reports, all three have confessed to holding up the store.

The store clerk said the four were laughing as they thought they were getting away. (Now I’m laughing).

According to Florida statutes, the teens are charged with murder because a person was killed during the commission of a felony.

Escaped Prisoner Found Hiding In Car Trunk

A 23-year-old prisoner who escaped from a Fernandina Beach hospital early Friday morning was found about six hours later hiding in the truck of his girlfriend’s car.

John Davis was back in custody by 3 p.m. on charges of escape, assault and drug charges.

Deputies also arrested a 17-year-old girl on charges of lying to police. Officials said the Davis’ girlfriend will likely be charged with aiding and abetting an escape.

Davis was originally arrested Thursday night on drug charges, but fearing that he had swallowed some cocaine, deputies took him to Baptist Medical Center Nassau for observation.

When a corrections officer picked him up Friday morning to transfer him to jail, deputies said Davis assaulted the officer and ran out the rear door of the emergency room.

“(The officer) went back down to put the shackles, reapply the shackles. At that time, the prisoner assaulted the correctional officer and overtook him physically,” Nassau County Sheriff Tommy Seagraves said.

With the officer in pursuit, Davis jumped into a car in the parking lot and demanded that the driver get him out of there, but the driver refused, so Davis fled on foot into nearby woods.

Deputies said he broke into a unit at a nearby senior’s apartment complex. When the resident came home, Davis jumped out of the closet and ran outside. Investigators believe the 17-year-old picked him up there and took Davis to his girlfriend’s apartment in Nassauville.

Deputies had the girlfriend under surveillance and followed her as she left.

“We made a traffic stop. He was in the trunk of the vehicle,” Seagraves said.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office initially provided a helicopter and ground units to assist in the search, and the Camden County, Ga., Sheriff’s Office has provided K-9 teams to help.

Deputies said Davis had a history of arrests in Nassau County, but none of the charges involved violence, so they did not believe he was dangerous.

Southside Elementary School was placed on lockdown, and Emma Love Elementary was placed on partial lockdown Friday morning because of police activity nearby, but those lockdowns were lifted before noon.

“I’m glad he’s in custody. I’m glad nobody got hurt,” Seagraves said.

Police Arrest 2 On Unrelated Murder Charges

Police announced Thursday the first two homicide arrests of 2008 by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office: Quentin Joyner was charged with Monday night’s shooting death of 21-year-old Kevin Jackson, and Erica Thomas, 19, was charged in the shooting death of a man during a robbery at a Westside motel in October.

According to the arrest report, Joyner was fighting with Jackson Monday night at the Sanctuary Walk Apartments before he went to his car, got a handgun, returned and fired shots through the door.

Witnesses said Jackson jumped from a second-story window and began to run away while Joyner gave chase and fatally shot the 21-year-old.

In addition to a charge of murder, Joyner is also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police said they began building a case against Thomas in the Oct. 2 homicide of 54-year-old Jimmy Daugherty, of Kingsland, Ga., after getting a tip from the teen’s friend.

Detectives provided the friend with a recording device and they said she recorded Thomas admitting she planned to rob the victim in a Lane Avenue motel room, but the robbery “went so south.”

Thomas was a student at Raines High School at the time of the crime, which detectives said she had planned for two months.

Police: Man Sends Judge $100, Accused Of Bribery

A 60-year-old man spent Thursday night in the Duval County jail accused of bribery after a judge said he received a note from him with a $100 bill enclosed.

According to the arrest report, Warren Robinson arrived at a hearing on a domestic violence charge before Judge Charles Cofer and handed the judge’s assistant an envelope containing the cash and a note that said: “Please accept this little token of gratitude and appreciation towards me. P.S. Take your wife out to dinner on me on Valentine’s Day.”

In the three-page letter, Robinson asking Cofer to dismiss the case. Instead, he was arrested and charged with bribery.

At Robinson’s first-appearance hearing on the bribery charge Friday morning, Cofer asked the prosecutor: “How much favoritism did he reasonably feel he’d receive for only $100?”

After hearing chuckles in the courtroom, the judge added: “Was this more an inappropriate gesture than bribery?”

Robinson was released on his own recognizance on the condition he has no contact with the judge or his assistant. He was due to return to court for an arraignment on March 6.

Police: Brothers Awaiting Trial Behaving Badly In Jail

Constant trouble has followed the three brothers in jail awaiting trial in the slaying of a young Jacksonville girl, according to authorities.

Channel 4 viewers may remember first seeing Tijuan, Rasheem and Terrell Dubose when the brothers made their first appearance in court on murder charges. At that time, the trio was seen laughing and smiling at the cameras, despite facing serious charges.

All three are charged in the slaying of 8-year-old Dreshawna Davis, who was fatally shot when a hail of bullets riddled her family’s home.

Davis died trying to protect her cousin, her family said.

A year after being indicted, the Dubose brothers have racked up a thick file of disciplinary reports in jail.

“They are all just miscreants,” said Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ken Jefferson. “They just have a total disrespect for themselves as well as authorities.”

The brothers’ records cite inappropriate conduct such as fighting, stealing, lying, masturbating, drugs, and disobedience.

“Their behavior in the detention facility has just been despicable,” Jefferson said.

Police said the whole list of misconduct is what the Dubose brothers have been up to since they’ve been arrested.

“They don’t cooperate. They’ve been involved with fights. They are just a menace to society,” Jefferson said.

Police said it’s not hard to believe the accusations against the Dubose brothers, based on their conduct in public. One of the brothers made an obscene jester to TV cameras during his last court appearance.

“They have no respect for the judge. These guys — they are in the right place,” said Jefferson.

The Dubose brothers are expected to be back in court within the next few months.

Suspect In Putnam County Triple Homicide Arrested

Less than 24 hours after three men were found dead in a vacant Putnam County home, authorities arrested a suspect in the triple homicide.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, 28-year-old Duane Demaris Crittendon II was arrested Sunday morning and charged with multiple counts of murder.

Saturday morning, the bodies of Jerome Anthony Henry, 48, Richard David Smith and Robert Erwin Ford, both 50, were found in the 100 block of Carver Street.

According to sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Keith Riddick, the men’s bodies were found inside a building that had been licensed as a neighborhood tavern but was closed down several years ago.

In recent years, the building, which is in a residential neighborhood just outside Palatka, was used as a late-night hangout where people gathered to play pool on the lone pool table inside or play cards or talk, Riddick said.

The three victims were killed, and then robbed, while apparently playing in a “high stakes” card game, according to the sheriff’s office.
Putnam County triple homicide victims

A statement released by the sheriff’s office stated that an investigation into the slayings led to witness testimony and physical evidence, which deputies said links Crittenden to the crimes.

Crittenden was taken into custody shortly before 5:30 a.m. in a joint effort of Marion County and Putnam County authorities.

“Once we tracked him to Marion County, we talked to the sheriff there and he activated his detectives and his SWAT team. We located a hotel, where the suspect was located. We went there and he was not there at the time. We had a dozen of our detectives down there. They had a lot of their detectives out and stayed on it. We received more tips. About 5:20 this morning we started walking the streets of Ocala and he was picked up … and placed under arrested,” said Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Dean Kelly.

The suspect was found walking in the 2200 block of South Pine Avenue in Ocala and was arrested without incident.

Crittenden is charged with three counts of first-degree murder.

Police say Laura Etta Robinson, a 57-year-old retiree from St. Petersburg, dragged an 8-year-old boy out of his bed one night last week, tied him up and flogged him over the course of at least three hours.

Robinson of 3932 11th Ave. S was charged Friday with false imprisonment and aggravated child abuse. She remained in the Pinellas County Jail on Saturday with bail set at $120,000.

According to a St. Petersburg Police Department report:

Robinson went to the boy as he was in bed sleeping, wrapped his wrists in duct tape and dragged him into the living room. She tied his arms to a heavy coffee table with a bungee cord and placed duct tape around his legs.

She laid him face-down with his pajama pants down on top of an empty plastic trash bag so his urine wouldn’t reach the carpet. Then she hit his behind over and over with what police described as a “long, black flexible object.”

“As she was beating him, she rested in between, alternating from striking hard — soft — then harder and harder,” the police report said. “As she was beating him, she repeated ‘obey, obey’ over and over again.”

The incident reportedly occurred from about 11 p.m. Feb. 7 to 2 a.m. Feb. 8. The report did not provide the 8-year-old’s relationship to Robinson.

Authorities in Bolivar, Tennessee have made an arrest in connection with the brutal beating death of former Hardeman County Commissioner Dunn Mask.

Bolivar Police say 32 year-old Don Mask Brown, Jr. is in custody. He’s accused of robbing 79 year-old Dunn Mask and severely beating him after he returned home from dining out with his wife in September 2007. Mr. Mask died a few days later.

Brown is charged with First Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault. Police believe he robbed Mr. Mask because he thought he was wealthy. The Masks owned a lot of farmland in Hardeman County.

Police say what makes the case disturbing is the fact the Brown’s family is very close to the Mask Family, and has been for years. Brown’s father, aunt, and his father’s twin, were name after Mr. Mask and his wife Peggy.

Friday morning Judge Dianne Turner bound Jerald Hicks Sr.’s case over to the grand jury.

In January, police charged Hicks Sr. with criminal homicide and aggravated child neglect after the man’s 17-month-old son, Jerald Hicks Jr., was pronounced dead at Centennial hospital.

At the time of death, the young boy weighed 10 pounds and was so cold that doctors could not measure his body temperature.

An autopsy revealed that Hicks Jr. died of starvation and hypothermia.

A 2-year-old daughter was also brought to Centennial, but quickly moved to Vanderbilt University Medical Center because of malnutrition.

Hicks may have been unemployed, but detectives said he had food stamps.

The children’s mother did not live at the apartment. Police said she last saw her children on Jan. 17.

The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services is taking care of the girl.

Police in Burlington say someone is attacking people (White people) while they’re pumping gas.

One victim says it happened in broad daylight in front of several people.

She was hit was a metal pipe says she’s scarred for life.

“All I saw were eyes and blue bandana… And that’s when I fell and um… I was like Oh, my God.. he’s going to kill me,” explained attack victim Kathleen Fisher.

Her nose is broken and her sinus’ are caved in. She is also missing a front tooth and all of her top teeth are loose.

A similar attack happened two weeks ago.

The thing is that neither victim was robbed. They were just beaten.

The owner of Great Stops on North Church Street is offering a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of a man wanted for assaulting a Burlington woman in January in the store’s parking lot.

Phil Kleinman who owns the 24-hour convenience store, which is located near the convergence of North Church and Fisher streets, is offering a $2,500 reward. Alamance County CrimeStoppers will also pay for information that leads to an arrest and conviction, according to a Burlington Police Department news release.

Police have been searching for the man who assaulted Kathleen Fisher of Burlington since the attack on Jan. 16. Fisher stopped at Great Stops at about 9 a.m. that morning. As she was heading in the store to pay for her fuel, a man whose face was masked with a blue bandanna, approached her and hit her in the face.

At the time, Fisher told police she thought she was hit with a bottle. Since that time, her physician informed her that her injuries — a broken nose and facial fractures — were more likely caused by a metal object, such as a pipe.

DNA leads to an arrest in a 16-year-old cold murder case.

Murphysboro police arrested 37-year-old Quincy Damell Hughes Friday afternoon. Hughes is charged with the 1991 murder of Cindy Lou Pavey.

Pavey’s body was found on December 2nd at a home on Shomaker Drive. Investigators reopened the case late last year, after discovering new forensic evidence.

Authorities say a Murphysboro man is in custody for an alleged 1991 murder of a 22-year-old female.

Police arrested Quincy Damell Hughes, 37, around 3 p.m. Friday after a judge issued a warrant for him on unrelated charges, according to a Murphysboro Police Department press release.

Hughes is charged with first degree murder in the death of Cindy Lou Pavey, whose body was discovered by officers in a Murphysboro residence nearly two decades ago. A coroner’s jury ruled the death a homicide, but authorities could not pinpoint a suspect at the time.

A 44-year-old day laborer was arrested Friday night on a charge of second-degree murder, authorities said.

Calvin Ford was being held at the Orient Road Jail without bond, records show. Police learned Ford had an outstanding homicide warrant after citing him for an open container violation about 8:30 p.m.

Ford had an argument Feb. 11 with Donald R. Kay, 44, who later that day was found dead on the sidewalk of Columbus Plaza, 5016 E. 10th Ave, according to a news media advisory and a criminal report affidavit.

An autopsy showed that Kay died from skull fractures caused by blunt trauma to the head. His body was found lying amid cigarette butts, liquor bottles and beer cans.

During their investigation, Tampa homicide detectives learned Kay had gotten into an argument with Ford about 2 1/2 hours earlier.

Ford and Kay were last seen together about 50 feet from where Kay’s body was found, the affidavit said. Ford’s fingerprints were also found on two beer cans found at the crime scene, it said.

Witnesses identified Ford from a photo array as the person who was arguing with Kay before he died, the affidavit said.

Police initially charged Ford with holding a 32-ounce open container of beer in a city right of way at 22nd Street N. and Columbus Drive E., records show. They later verified that he had an active warrant for homicide.

Ford was taken to police headquarters and interviewed by detectives before he was charged with second-degree murder. Ford denied knowing or even meeting the victim and denied being anywhere near the strip mall or killing anyone, the affidavit said.

Police say Ford has an extensive criminal background, and has done several stints in state prison. His record includes arrests for charges of burglary and aggravated assault.
