This was the opinion of professor Anna van der Hoven, a criminologist from Unisa in commenting on a Centurion case in which a man and a woman were repeatedly burnt with a clothes iron by armed robbers.

According to Van der Hoven, victims said they often saw hatred and cruelty in the eyes of their attackers.

“I don’t know if that refers to the past and why they don’t just take what they want and leave.”

Racist elements

“There are underlying racist elements. They were perhaps deprived and want to take revenge.”

“The attackers are sometimes not South African, but people from other African countries, where there is also unrest.”

Van der Hoven said it gave attackers a sense of power to hurt people.

“They feel they can intimidate people. They are in control and can decide if they want to torture you and how long you have to live.”

She added that rehabilitation programmes in prisons were not complete and criminals often came out of jail more dangerous than before. On top of this, they could decide if they wanted to take part in the programmes or not.

Dr Johan Burger, a senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, said SA’s history of violence could contribute to the problem and that violence was seen as a means to a goal.

He also said that violence could be used as an instrument to get information from victims.

They could use force to obtain information about safes or to get a PIN number from victims.

According to Burger, there was a divide between rich and poor and that some people living in abject poverty could feel they had to commit crime.

The attackers could feel frustrated with their circumstances and then take out this frustration on their victims.

Sometimes victims fought back or even made insulting comments and this could lead to violence.

“Often the attacker’s behaviour is as a result of the victim’s, but that is not always the case.”

Burger said there was a lack of research on this particular topic and one could only speculate about it.

HUNDREDS of angry Hillcrest residents bayed for the blood of five rape
suspects outside the Hillcrest Police Station yesterday.

Initially, the crowd staged a protest outside the Pinetown Magistrate’s
Court where the suspects were due to appear for the rape of a young
Kloof woman.

Seven men accosted Jessica Foord and her father at a nearby dam on
Sunday and repeatedly raped her in a field. The Foords had been walking
their dogs when they were attacked.

Five suspects were arrested on Wednesday after intense investigations.

The suspects were due for their first court appearance yesterday, but
police found out about the planned protest and brought the suspects to
court on Thursday.

Lindani Maphumulo, Thabani Ntinga, Siyabonga Ntinga, Mbotho Msomi and
Nthuthuko Chili were denied bail and were remanded into custody at
Durban’s Westville Prison until their next court appearance on March 20.

This “deception” further angered protestors, many of whom had taken time
off work and school to attend the protest.

It is believed that protestors were also riled by the rape of a
six-year-old girl in the area.

Fed up with the high crime rate in the area, residents then moved to
Hillcrest Police Station, where they demanded to see the suspects.

Residents moved to the area just outside the station’s holding cells and
shouted threats at the five suspects inside. Foord’s relatives were
among the protestors.

Private investigator Brad Nathanson, who was instrumental in tracking
down the suspects, said that community members contacted him shortly
after the rape to help in the investigation.

“I was told that there wasn’t a lot of money lying around, so I took on
the job free of charge. I started work immediately,” he said.

He said he went to the crime scene and recovered a vital piece of
information that the police had missed.

“The next day, I took Jessica and her father to the dam to point out the
crime scene. I also put out some money to my informers and waited for
information,” he said.
Two of Nathanson’s informers came back with a suspect’s name.
“They both came back with the same name, which was our hot lead. It took
us six hours to track the suspect down. He then pointed out the
suspects,” he added.

He said that the community banded together to support his team during
the investigation.
“I’m very proud at what we achieved. The community was a great help to
us,” he said.

Hillcrest resident Michelle Blanckenberg said the rape had shocked the
community into taking action against the increase of crime in the area.
She said the area where the rape occurred was a popular spot for
families.
“Enough is enough. It is unacceptable and time we stood up against these
rapes. It’s amazing how people have come together to express their anger
about the crime,” she said.
Another, Christina Dubazama from Wyebank, said she lost faith in the
local police after her daughter’s rapists were granted bail.
Dubazama’s eight-year-old daughter and grandmother were gang-raped in August last
year; their attackers paid their bail and were released.
“I know what that girl is going through. The men who attacked my family
are out there waiting to rape more women. Something needs to be done,”
she said.

Overcome with emotion, she said that she hoped that government brought
back the death penalty for those who raped and killed. “I’m tired of all
this. Our children are suffering. The powers that be should wake and see
that there is a problem with crime in this country,” she said.

Everton resident Sally van den Berg said parents were terrified to let
their children play outside.
“People are terrified after the incident. Our local police don’t help.
We gave them information and nothing was done,” she said.

Ernest Khumalo from Molweni said police failed the community when it
came to responding to calls about crime. “They are not helpful. We have
to wait for hours … We are fed up with the crime situation now,” he
said.
Police spokeswoman Danelia Veldhuizen said that police were still
searching for two suspects who are still on the run.

South African BLACK men rape babies as ‘cure’ for Aids

THE alleged rape of a nine-month-old baby girl by six men in a remote
part of rural South Africa last week has focused the nation on an 80 per
cent rise in child sexual abuse over a year, much of it connected with
the country’s Aids pandemic.
More than 67,000 cases of rape and sexual assaults against children were
reported last year, compared with 37,500 in 1998. Child welfare groups
believe that the number of unreported incidents could be up to 10 times
that number.
Some of the victims were as young as six-months-old, a number of whom
died from their injuries, while others contracted HIV. The largest
increase in attacks has been against children under seven.
Although rises in poverty, violent crime and unemployment are said to
have contributed to the escalation in child abuse, the most significant
and worrying factor is the widespread myth sweeping the country that
having sex with children provides a cure for Aids.
Cati Vawda, the director of the Children’s Rights Centre in Durban,
said: “There is a belief across South Africa that a virgin will cure a
man of HIV or Aids. We have no idea where this idea has come from, but
it has been around for a few years and has certainly taken hold.”
Kelly Hatfield, of People Opposed to Women Abused , added: “South Africa
has reached a new low. This rumour certainly has become a common
belief.”
Police say at least one of the men who attacked the nine-month-old girl
is HIV-positive. The baby has also been tested for the virus and given
anti-retroviral drugs as a precaution.
The girl - whose name has not been released - remains in intensive care
at the Kimberley Hospital. While doctors said it was likely that her
physical wounds would heal, experts remained concerned about
psychological trauma.
Even in a country that is accustomed to violent crime, the attack has
shocked the nation. Pictures of the six accused appeared on front pages
of newspapers across South Africa and radio phone-in shows were
inundated with callers demanding to know what the police and Government
were doing to stop child abuse.
More than 1,000 people, mainly women and children, gathered at the
magistrate’s court in the remote town of Upington in the north of the
country to vent their anger as the trial opened against the men, aged
between 24 and 66, accused of assaulting the infant. The crowd chanted
slogans demanding more protection for children, and waved banners and
posters.
Dozens of police and soldiers had to be deployed to stop the crowd from
surging into the courtroom, where the case was postponed until later
this month. The six accused men were remanded in custody.
South Africa has the highest number of HIV-positive citizens in the
world. According to official figures, one in nine South Africans are
infected with the virus, although many health workers believe the rate
of infection to be closer to one in eight. Schools often harbour the
worst sex offenders.
Next month, a deputy headmaster in the Eastern Cape goes on trial
accused of raping schoolgirls over a 10-year period, resulting in 20 of
them becoming pregnant.
Joan van Niekerk, the chairman of Childline South Africa, said: “How can
we hope that a school will teach children to behave responsibly when the
very people who are educating them are themselves abusers?”
The 185 child abuse cases that are reported to the police each day
represent just a fraction of the true number committed, according to
child welfare groups. Of these, just five per cent result in a
successful conviction. For those mothers aware that their children have
been abused, the decision to make a complaint is rarely easy.
Edith Kriel, a social worker who helps child victims in the Eastern
Cape, said: “Child abusers are often relatives of their victims - even
their fathers and providers. For women, making a complaint is a hard
choice because they end up losing their husbands, the breadwinners and
the roof over their heads.”

Uncle arrested in murder and rape of California City teen last year

Finally some closure for a Kern County desert community, one year after a teenager was found killed. Friday morning 40-year-old Phillip Ellison was arrested for the murder and rape of 14-year-old Jamesha Terry in California City.

California City Police say they found evidence early in the case that linked Ellison to the victim, but it’s taken this long to get the evidence analyzed. Police Chief Steve Colerick says investigators had evidence from where the body was found, two dumpsters, from Ellison’s apartment, and a sample from the suspect himself.

Chief Colerick says although it took a long time to get all the work done, the crime lab “made the case.”

‘It was a forensic processing of DNA matching, and analysis that ultimately linked Mr. Ellison to the body,” says Chief Colerick.

The 14-year-old girl was last seen March 19, 2007 after she got off a school bus. Her body was found 13 days later in the vacant lot — and the only building nearby is an apartment where Ellison had lived for a couple years.

“We profiled all the tenants, visitors and residents that did live there,” Chief Colerick told Eyewitness News. “He was the one that came to the forefront.” Why? “Due to the relationship specifically to her.”

A Houston mother and son allegedly hid a young girl and used her as a sex slave

Gregoria Salgada Vazquez and David Salazar were charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault of a child after they allegedly had the girl transported from Mexico to Houston, where they kept her pad locked in a room since Jan. 1, the TV station reports.

She reportedly was allowed to leave the room only when the two of them were present.

Police said the girl allegedly was forced to have sex with Salazar and also was taken to a Houston nigh club that the pair own and was forced to have sex with clients, the station reported.

Three students from Montclair High School were charged on Tuesday with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old special education student at one of their homes last week, prosecutors and the police in the suburban New Jersey community said.

A law enforcement official said the three male suspects — an 18-year-old and two 16-year-olds — forced the girl to perform sex on them and abused her with a broomstick on Thursday afternoon.

“This is a horrible act,” Montclair Police Chief David P. Sabagh said at a news conference. “This is a sad day for Montclair.”

Two of the suspects, Romal Roberts, 18, and one of the 16-year-olds, were arrested on Saturday. The third suspect surrendered to the police on Tuesday, the authorities said. The three were charged with multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault.

The Essex County prosecutor, Paula T. Dow, did not say why the victim was in special education classes, but did say that some of the charges had to do with the victim’s “diminished capacity.”

Residents of Montclair, a middle-class town of about 40,000 that prides itself on its schools and its history of racial integration, were stunned by the events and its jarring similarity to others in recent years.

Charges Filed in Murphysboro Cold Case

Police have made an arrest in the murder of a Murphysboro woman 16 years ago. Now family members of the victim are speaking out.

It’s been more than a decade since 22 year-old Cindy Pavey was found murdered.

37 year-old Quincy Hughes of Murphysboro has been charged in the killing and faces four counts of first degree murder.

It was on the morning of December second, 1991 that police found Cindy Pavey dead inside her Murphysboro home.

Forensic evidence was taken from the scene, and because of recent advances in technology, officials were able to use that evidence 16 years later to link Quincy Hughes to this crime.

“She didn’t deserve this. She didn’t deserve this at all” says Pavey’s mother Marlene Eckert.

Eckert says years of not knowing who killed her daughter has taken a toll.

“There’s always a hole in your heart.”

Cindy Pavey was beaten to death inside her home on Shomaker Drive in Murphysboro. Police say there were no signs of forced entry into the house.

Pavey’s two children– ages two and four — were at the home when police arrived. It’s unclear if they witnessed the crime.

“They were so young and I’ve just reminded them that their mom loved them” says Eckert.

Over time, the case grew cold, until 3 years ago. That’s when investigators re-submitted forensic evidence taken from the crime scene.

“In November of 2007, Murphysboro police were notified of a DNA profile match to a Quincy Demell Hughes of Murphysboro” says Jackson County State’s Attorney Mike Wepsiec.

Officials say Hughes– who was 20 at the time of the crime– was not an original suspect, but they believe he knew the victim.

“Their paths had crossed previously” says Wepsiec.

Hughes has now been accused of hitting Cindy Pavey in the head with an intent to kill. Officials also allege he beat Pavey while sexually assaulting her.

If convicted, Quincy Hughes could face 20 years to natural life in prison.

For family members of Cindy Pavey, they are hopeful this could finally be the closure they were looking for.

“I want to believe that they finally got the person” says Eckert.

Hughes is being held at the Jackson County jail on a million dollars bond. His preliminary hearing is set for March 14th at 8:30 in the morning.

Jackson County court records show Hughes is a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal record. In the past, he’s served time for home invasion, aggravated battery, and theft.

Four years ago police got unusual help ” disturbing, chilling help ” as women’s bodies kept turning up along the Prospect Avenue corridor.

They found the first victim in July 2004, then two more that Sept. 2. Over the next two days, two 911 calls from the same person made clear that investigators were chasing a serial killer.

The anonymous caller said that he had deposited the bodies. Then he said where to find three more tips that police quickly determined to be true.

A police task force formed. Angst and fear spread through the community. Within weeks, authorities arrested and charged Terry A. Blair, a convicted murderer also wanted for violating parole.

Today he starts a nonjury trial before Jackson County Circuit Judge John O’Malley on six counts of first-degree murder.

The victims died of broken necks, strangulation or both. Blair’s DNA allegedly matched semen left in at least one of them. But little other evidence has been made public, largely because a grand jury heard details in secret before indicting Blair.

It’s unknown what evidence prosecutors have, if any, linking the mysterious 911 calls to Blair. According to court records, the caller had an accent or some kind of speech impediment. If police sent recordings to the FBI for voice analysis, the defense never got a copy of the results, court filings show.

Defense lawyers asked the judge to approve costs of bringing in a dialect expert from Lawrence to testify, presumably about Blair’s voice and the tapes.

Defense lawyer Cynthia Dryden declined to comment on the case.

Citing the gag order issued by a judge, Jackson County Prosecutor Jim Kanatzar has declined to comment other than to say much of the evidence was highly scientific and technical.

Last month, Kanatzar said his office no longer would seek the death penalty against Blair, 46, in exchange for a deal to try the complex case before O’Malley without a jury.

Prosecutors also agreed to permanently dismiss charges against Blair in two other killings, three rapes and an assault.

The other killings involved the deaths of Nellia Harris, whose body was found outside the corridor area in September 2004, and Sandra Reed, found in the corridor area in June 2003.

Reed’s body was on a balcony above where victim Carmen Hunt’s body was found more than a year later.

O’Malley previously had ruled that the Harris and Reed killings and the assault and rape cases would be tried separately because, unlike the others, they were not linked through the 911 calls, the 2004 time frame and the corridor location.

According to court records, one of the rape victims said Blair raped her while choking her to the point that she passed out. The assault victim said Blair choked her with a “black rubbery rope.

All eight killings and the other crimes occurred while Blair was either on conditional release or was wanted for violating parole for a 1982 murder conviction.

In that case, he beat his 19-year-old former girlfriend to death with a stick. He called police to report Angela Monroe’s death but at first blamed it on another man. Later he said he killed her in anger that she was working as a prostitute.

Blair has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The trial is expected to last most of the week.

Suspect in Comfort Inn killing pleads not guilty, faces trial as prior offender

COLUMBIA — The man charged with a murder, rape and robbery in November at two Columbia hotels pleaded not guilty to 11 felony charges Monday.

Dwight T. Hayes, 21, formerly of 1812 McKee St., will face a trial as a prior and persistent felony offender, according to a motion granted by Boone County Circuit Judge Gene Hamilton.

Under Missouri law, a person may serve a longer prison sentence if they have previously been convicted or pleaded guilty to a felony offense.

Hayes is accused of shooting Cynthia White, a 55-year-old Comfort Inn general manager. Officers found White’s body on Nov. 24 in an office at the hotel with a gunshot wound to the head. Officer’s also discovered that money had been stolen from a cash drawer.

In a separate case, Hayes is accused of asking a female clerk at the same hotel to have sex with him on Nov. 15. When she refused, Hayes pointed a handgun at her and said, “Well, give me the money then,” according to court documents. Investigators said he then forced her into a back room and raped her at gunpoint, before stealing her car.

Hayes is also charged with robbing another hotel, the Hampton Inn at 3410 Clark Lane.

A guest told police a man knocked on his hotel room door and asked for his ice bucket, according to court documents. When he opened the door, the man had what he thought to be a gun. The guest, Brian Plattner of Sabetha, Kan., forced the man out of the doorway and locked the door and then called police, documents show. Plattner identified Hayes to police using a photo line up.

Hayes was arrested Nov. 25 at his home on a warrant for the Hampton Inn robbery. Police searched his house and found a gun, thought to be the weapon used to kill White, and bullets, according to police.

During interviews with investigators, Hayes admitted to committing the robbery and rape at the Comfort Inn, according to a probable cause affidavit. He also gave incriminating statements linking him to the murder of White, according to the document.

His trial is set to begin on April 29 for charges of second-degree murder, forcible rape, forcible sodomy, four counts of armed criminal action, first degree robbery and first degree tampering of a motor vehicle.

Daycare Owner Arrested On Sex Charges

The playground is empty and the doors are locked at A-J’s Pre-K Learning Center on Langley Avenue in Pensacola. The Florida Department of Children and Family Services shut down the facility last night, when the owner of the daycare, Albert McCreary, was arrested on sex charges involving a minor. Investigators in Pensacola charged McCreary with performing a leud and lascivious act on a child.

McCreary was also charged with fraud. Bond on both charges has been set at 55-thousand dollars. Detectives say the alleged crime happened in 2004 at old daycare McCreary used to operate on Born Drive. That facility is now operated by another company. Parents we spoke to say they’re concerned about the safety and security of daycare centers.

“It’s kind of scary,” says Stacey Blackmon. “It’s heart-breaking because you think your children will be safe at the daycare they go to.”

Investigators say there could be more than one victim. Detectives are looking into other allegations of sexual misconduct at the daycare.

While out on bail, a career criminal stalked and raped three teenagers and shot a rival in Miami, police say.

Pleadro Jermaine Scott, 25, was arrested Wednesday and charged with three separate rapes and attempted murder.

”He’s a one-man crime wave. He really is,” said Miami Lt. Vincent La Ricci, of the special victims unit.

Scott, awaiting trial on weapons charges, had been released from jail after posting bail in May 2007.

A preliminary DNA match helped identify Scott as a suspect, Miami police said.

By Wednesday morning, the victims had identified Scott. Detectives arrested him at a cousin’s home in Little Haiti.

His crimes, Miami police say:

• On Feb. 3, he followed a 17-year-old who was leaving her retail job in Wynwood. While riding a bicycle, he pointed a gun at her, stealing her Metro PCS Nokia phone, $34 and her ID.

Scott forced her behind a white truck and raped her, according to Miami Detective Reyneaud Gerbier’s arrest report.

Gerbier and Detective Keandra Simmons charged Scott Wednesday with armed sexual battery, armed robbery and armed kidnapping. Scott said the girl agreed to sex, according to the arrest affidavit.

• On Feb. 16, police say, Scott followed another 17-year-old who was walking home in Little Haiti. He followed her into her apartment and raped her inside her bedroom at gunpoint. Her father was home at the time, in another room, and didn’t hear the attack.

After raping the girl, Scott tried robbing her father in his room.

”If you comes out, you are a dead man,” Scott told him, according to an arrest report. The man had no money.

For the second rape, Scott faces two counts of armed sexual battery, armed robbery, attempted armed robbery and armed sexual battery. Again, Scott said the sex was consensual, police say.

• On Feb. 27, police say, Scott burst into a 19-year-old’s car that was stopped in the 800 block of Northwest 102nd Street. Pointing a gun at her, Scott forced the teen to drive to Northwest 22nd Avenue and Gulf Drive, where he raped her, police said.

After the attack, Scott forced the teen to drive him to Biscayne Boulevard and Northwest 70th Street, where she dropped him off, according to an arrest report by Miami-Dade Detective Alberto Morciego.

On Sunday, police say, Scott was involved in a completely different type of crime: attempted murder. According to a witness, Scott shot and wounded Tramell Marshall, 23, at 1511 NW 68th Terr. on Sunday night. Miami homicide Detective Ervens Ford arrested Scott on an attempted murder charge Wednesday.

After asking Kansas City, Mo., police to use DNA technology to try to solve the 1987 cold case slaying of his grandmother, word that the killer was identified turned into an emotional roller coaster for Topekan Lawson Phillips.

“It was good news,” Phillips said during an interview at his Topeka home. When a police investigator told him a DNA match was made to a suspect in 2004, Phillips felt “elated, excited, (that) they found him.” Then he recalled details of the slaying of Edna Walton, 88, in her airplane bungalow in Kansas City, Mo.

“I went from real excited to crying and sobbing,” he said.

This week, Phillips and his mother, Betty Phillips, who is Walton’s daughter, will watch as Marshall Tillman, 55, is sentenced in Kansas City, Mo.

A Jackson County (Mo.) Circuit Court jury convicted Tillman on Feb. 7, 2008, of first-degree murder, rape and forcible sodomy, court records said. It had been more than 20 years since the August 1987 slaying of Walton.

Walton had been strangled to death, suffered a beating on the head and was sexually assaulted.

While no arrest was made for years, Phillips, who was 26 when his grandmother was killed, would touch base with police every two to five years to find whether there was any progress in the investigation.

“The unsolved murder of my grandmother kind of became this thing I felt an obligation I needed to follow up every few years,” Phillips said.

He didn’t accept that the killing would remain unsolved.

“That would be to give up hope, and there was no reason to give up hope. (Her death) was just unfinished business,” he said. “She deserves the follow-through on it.”

One neighbor who grew up with Courtney Lockhart in his eastern Alabama town describes him as a troublemaker who liked to pick on younger boys.

Another says Lockhart seemed like a good kid who mowed his family’s lawn and always said hello to her at the Wal-Mart.

Both neighbors, however, were taken aback to learn that the 23-year-old from Smiths Station, Ala., had been charged Saturday with capital murder in a case everyone in town had heard about — the shooting death of Marietta’s Lauren Burk, a freshman at Auburn University.

“That’s crazy,” said another neighbor, Thomas Moore, 19, who said Lockhart bullied him as a youngster, too. “I wouldn’t have believed that.”

Lockhart’s arrest came three days after Burk was found fatally wounded Tuesday night along a highway not far from the university.

Burk’s murder drew enough interest that Auburn police assembled a task force of local, state and federal investigators to find her killer.

But it was police officers from Phenix City who caught and arrested Lockhart on Friday. Phenix City is about a 35-mile drive from the Auburn campus.

“I wouldn’t call it a lucky break,” Auburn police Assistant Chief Tommy Dawson said Saturday. “I would call it a blessing from God.”

Police held a news conference in Auburn late Saturday morning to announce that Lockhart has been charged with three crimes: capital murder during a kidnapping, capital murder during a robbery and capital murder during an attempted rape.

The announcement came less than six hours before Burk was set to be memorialized at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta. Her funeral is 5:30 p.m. today at Marietta’s Temple Kol Emeth.

Lockhart’s case will be presented to a grand jury on May 5. He is being held in the Russell County jail but is expected to be moved next week to the jail in Lee County, where records show he served time in 2002 for harassment.

Lockhart did not know the 18-year-old Burk, and he acted alone, police said. Aside from that, police are releasing few details.

Dawson would not say how investigators linked Lockhart to the crime. He did say police have “a lot of evidence,” but declined to elaborate.

“We have the right individual in jail,” Dawson said. “I’m 100 percent sure of that.”

N.C. police circulate photo of possible suspect in Carson slaying

North Carolina authorities said Saturday they continue to pursue “several leads” in the shooting death of 22-year-old Athens native Eve Marie Carson.

Police investigating the death of Carson, the student body president at the University of North Carolina, are circulating a photo of a possible suspect.

Sgt. L.B. Evans, the watch commander in the neighboring city of Durham, said his department was given the photo.

Saturday night at the UNC-Duke basketball game in Durham — amid the hubbub of the teams’ huge rivalry — there was a moment of silence. UNC players had “Eve” stitched in small blue circles on their uniforms, and people on both sides of the court wore Carolina blue lapel ribbons to honor Carson’s life.

Chapel Hill (N.C.) Police Chief Brian Curran said detectives don’t have the names of any suspects.

Twice in the hours after learning Carson had been shot to death early Wednesday on a city street not far from campus, thousands of students, staff and faulty gathered to mourn her death. The tears continued to flow Friday and Saturday, and it’s likely the school will hold another memorial service after students return from next week’s spring break.

University Chancellor James Moeser plans to lead a delegation of senior administrators to services this weekend for Carson at her home in Athens. The Board of Trustees, meanwhile, has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in her death.

Authorities say they do not believe there’s a connection between the shooting deaths of Carson and Lauren Burk, two Georgia natives attending out-of-state colleges.

Friday afternoon, Curran said his department has been in contact with authorities in Auburn to discuss “surface similarities” between the deaths. Burk was a Auburn University freshman from Marietta.

“We don’t believe they are connected,” Curran said at a Friday news conference.

Carson was shot to death early Wednesday. “We’re very hopeful that we will” solve the case, Curran said Friday afternoon during a half-hour update on the status of the case:

- Police have Carson’s laptop computer and are also looking into use of her credit card or cards, Curran said.

- 911 tapes of the two calls made after shots were fired will be released.

- There are no suspects in the case but investigators are following leads in search of clues that will lead them to Carson’s killer.

- The medical examiner’s initial examination did not reveal signs of a struggle between Carson and her killer.

- Carson was alone before her death. Her roommates had gone out at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, and had invited her along, but Carson stayed home to study. There was no sign of a break-in there, Curran said.

A West End man is facing allegations he had sexual contact with a two-year-old child.

29-year-old Tyree Huffman appeared in a Hamilton County courtroom on Wednesday on a felony count of gross sexual imposition.

Officials said the charges resulted after the child told it’s mother about contact that allegedly happened inside a West End apartment Tuesday afternoon.

According to statements made in court, Huffman allegedly had the child on his lap while he was naked.

Huffman’s bond was set at $50,000 and he was ordered to stay away from children.

Serial rapist in Charlottesville area receives four life sentences

An Albemarle County man who committed a series of rapes over nearly a decade in the Charlottesville area was sentenced Tuesday.

Forty-year-old Nathan Antonio Washington was arrested in August after police spent years trying to match a suspect with DNA evidence in seven rapes.

Washington — a former meat cutter and newspaper deliveryman who is married and a father of four — pleaded guilty in December to charges related to four attacks in Charlottesville and one in Albemarle County.

Under a plea agreement, a judge will sentence Washington to four life sentences for the Charlottesville attacks. A separate agreement in Albemarle County calls for an additional 20 years in prison for breaking and entering in connection with a 2004 sexual assault.

Tamir Hamilton Pleads Insanity in Sparks Killing

A man facing trial for the rape and killing of a Sparks teenager is pleading insanity.

Twenty-nine year old Tamir Hamilton entered his new plea Thursday during a hearing before Washoe District Judge Connie Steinheimer.

The judge also rejected a defense request to exclude a possible death penalty.

Hamilton’s is charged with sexually assaulting and killing 16-year-old Holly Jean Quick in her bedroom in 2006.

He was a friend and former roommate of the girl’s older sister.

His trial is scheduled to begin March 17.

Hamilton pleaded no contest last summer and was sentenced to life in prison for raping a University of Nevada, Reno student the month before Quick was killed.

A man long sought by Port St. Lucie police on charges that he impregnated and then forced a home abortion on a 15-year-old girl was arrested Wednesday in Lakeland, where he had been hiding, authorities said.

Acting on a tip, members of a federal marshals task force arrested Papouche Edmond, 21, at an apartment complex on West 14th Street in Lakeland, according to arrest documents.

Edmond is from Fort Pierce, and it wasn’t clear how long he had been in Polk County.

He was booked into Polk County Jail and then transferred to the custody of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, where he was being held without bail.

Edmond is accused of impregnating a 15-year-old girl he met after a middle school dance in Fort Pierce in September and then forcing her to have an abortion that sent her to a hospital emergency room with heavy bleeding, according to police documents.

A convicted child molester working as a pastor at a Pottstown YWCA is facing charges for failing to register under Megan’s Law, authorities said.

Guy Jones, 42, is a convicted child molester who was working as a pastor after serving time in prison.

Investigators said Jones is facing charges after failing to register under Megan’s Law.

According to police, Jones worked as a pastor of the City of Refuge Baptist Church, which rented space at the Pottstown YWCA.

“This is a situation where someone gave us information and we followed up on it, and someone in the community knew what he was doing and knew it was something about his background, they provided information and police were able to follow up on it,” Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said.

Jones is currently awaiting trial for assault, unlawful contact with a minor, and child endangerment stemming from an incident at his home in February of last year.

The YWCA said it plans to review its procedures for renting space.

Memphis, TN- Friday, February 15, 2008, a jury found Monique Johnson guilty of reckless homicide. She had originally been charged with first degree murder.

Johnson shot Memphis police officer Tony Hayes during a fight in September of 2006. The two had been dating. Johnson’s attorney said the shooting was self defense, while prosecutors argued it was planned.

After shooting Hayes, Johnson and her 16 year-old son then stuffed his body in the trunk of Hayes’ Lexus.

The maximum amount Johnson could serve is four years in prison.

She has already served 17 months.

She is set to be sentenced in March 2008.

Monique Johnson said she was a battered woman trapped in an abusive relationship.

“He told me I could never tell him no and if he wanted it I would have to give it to him,” Johnson said.

Johnson testified in court that months into her relationship with Memphis Police Officer Tony Hayes, Hayes became obsessed and jealous. He repeatedly forced her to have sex. He also stalked her and physically abused her.

Johnson says she tried to end he relationship numerous times.

In September of 2006 the two argued at her home.

Johnson said Hayes forced her into a closet where she kept a gun.

“I was holding the gun shaking. Asking him to leave. He said you won’t shoot me. I said you’re not going to let you hurt me. At that point he took a turn like he was going to leave, that’s when I started shooting,” Johnson said.

DNA leads to an arrest in a 16-year-old cold murder case.

Murphysboro police arrested 37-year-old Quincy Damell Hughes Friday afternoon. Hughes is charged with the 1991 murder of Cindy Lou Pavey.

Pavey’s body was found on December 2nd at a home on Shomaker Drive. Investigators reopened the case late last year, after discovering new forensic evidence.

Authorities say a Murphysboro man is in custody for an alleged 1991 murder of a 22-year-old female.

Police arrested Quincy Damell Hughes, 37, around 3 p.m. Friday after a judge issued a warrant for him on unrelated charges, according to a Murphysboro Police Department press release.

Hughes is charged with first degree murder in the death of Cindy Lou Pavey, whose body was discovered by officers in a Murphysboro residence nearly two decades ago. A coroner’s jury ruled the death a homicide, but authorities could not pinpoint a suspect at the time.

A man AWOL from his post at a North Carolina base is wanted on charges that he held his wife hostage, attempted to sexually assault her, then shot at her while he was holding a 5-month-old baby, according to the Glynn County Sheriff’s Office.

Police responded to a report of domestic violence at the couple’s Altama Avenue apartment at 1 p.m. Monday. The wife said Darryl Green, 20, had barricaded them inside and would not let her leave.

She told police Green had tied her up, begun breaking things in the apartment, then forced her to drink cleaning products and attempted to rape her. After firing a shot, he left the scene in a silver 2006 Chevrolet Impala with North Carolina license No. WPL8904.

Glynn County has obtained warrants for Green’s arrest, charging him with two counts of kidnapping, two counts of false imprisonment, two counts of aggravated assault, criminal attempt to commit rape, criminal damage to property and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Green is also wanted for being AWOL from the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, N.C.

Sex Offender Arrested 4 Days After Release From Prison

A Nassau County sex offender recently released from prison was arrested again after police said he entered a home and got into bed with a girl.

The Fernandina Beach Police Department announced on Tuesday the arrest of 26-year-old James Walter Scott.

Scott was released from state prison on Feb. 4. At about 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 8, Scott unlawfully entered an occupied residence and molested a child younger than the age of 16, the police department alleged.

Police said Scott entered the home through an unlocked door and proceeded to enter a bedroom, disrobe and then get into bed with a girl.

The victim awoke and resisted the attack, and the suspect fled the home on foot but left some articles of clothing, according to the police department.

The FBPD said Scott made several admissions to detectives, offering that he did enter the home uninvited, but claiming that he did not commit a lewd act.

Scott is charged with one count of burglary of an occupied residence and one count of lewdness. He is being held without bond.

Broward County teacher suspended after being accused of sexual assault

A Broward County teacher has been suspended without pay after being accused of sexual assault last spring.

Police charged Conraad Hoever, a former math teacher at Blanche Ely High in Pompano Beach, with sexual battery on one of his 15-year-old students back in March.

Hoever is scheduled to go to trial in April.

In an interview Only On 2, a Dayton man accused of raping a four-year-old girl said he didn’t do it.

Dale Driscoll, 27, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to court documents, the little girl told her baby-sitter she was in pain. She picked Driscoll out of a line-up and said he assaulted her during the Super Bowl. Driscoll said there were several other men in the home that night.

Driscoll admits he may not be a model citizen, but denies assaulting the child. “No ma’am. I swear on my right hand I done seen so many other perverts on TV. I’m not them. I’m not them.”

Driscoll said he’s willing to take a lie detector test and will take this case to trial if necessary.

Right now he’s behind bars with bond set at $50,000.

Deputy arrested in connection with sexual assault

Sheriff Cooke released today a disturbing report of a sexual assault on a child allegedly committed by a sheriff’s deputy. Sheriff Cooke first learned of the incidents from an employee of the Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 10. The case was assigned to Sheriff’s Investigators immediately. Investigators worked throughout the weekend to bring resolution. Investigators learned that Landon Greatheart and two other adult females living in the residence agreed to become temporary guardians for a 17-year-old female.

A consensual relationship developed between the victim and Greatheart while Greatheart was in a position of trust. Landon Greatheart, age 32,was arrested lateJan. 13on charges of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, a class 3 Felony and an obscenities charge, aclass 6 felony. The obscenities charge stems from information sent over a cell phone. Bond is pending first court appearance. Greatheart has been employed with the Sheriff’s Office since July 2003.

UPDATE: Greatheart has had his bond set at $50,000, with a next court date of January 16 th at 3:30 when charges are to be filed. His appearance is not required. At this time Greatheart is still in custody at Weld County Jail.

Jessica Kartalija has more from Bethel AME on the first Sunday service held since the church’s musical director was thrown in jail.

Bethel AME Church has more than 17,000 registered members. When asked how they felt about sex abuse charges filed against one of their own, Eyewitness News got “no comment” from everyone.

The congregation’s 31-year-old music director, Timothy Price of Owings Mills, is charged with second-degree rape, assault, child abuse and multiple sex offenses.

Investigators say Price admitted to having sex with a 12-year-old parishioner on at least three occasions–twice in a parking lot near Druid Hill Park and once in a West Baltimore alley.

“The suspect in this case works with many children. From what we understand, he is a musician of the church, so therefore, they had plenty of access well before any of the incidents ever took place,” Donny Moses, Baltimore City Police spokesperson, said.

Eyewitness News has learned the girl kept a journal and, after the last incident, told her mother what was going on.

Charging documents explain those incidents in graphic detail, saying the two began communicating through text messages and via cell phone last June.

Pastor Frank Reid says the entire congregation is praying for the victim, as well as Price. Price, who is married with a one-year-old daughter, will appear in court March 4.

Price has been held on $1 million bail at Baltimore’s Central Booking since his arrest on Wednesday.

An escapee from an Augusta correctional facility has been arrested for attacking a female jogger on the North Oconee River Greenway and for a convenience store robbery, police said.

Gary Gaylord Ford, 37, is being held in Clarke County Jail on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated sexual battery, kidnapping and armed robbery, Athens-Clarke police said.

Ford, who also is known as Gaylor Billups and other aliases, was arrested Friday after two women called 911 to report that a man had attacked the 21-year-old jogger. The women were biking on the trail when another jogger reported that her friend was being attacked.

The cyclists went to scare off the man but he knocked down one of the bikers and rode off on her bike, police said.

Police later found Ford on the bike and held him until the victim could identify him, said police Lt. Dave Leedahl.

After Ford’s arrest, police found his pickup and determined it was the same truck used in a robbery of an Athens convenience store on Wednesday, police said. The truck was matched to one stolen in a recent carjacking in Wilkes County, Leedahl said.

Ford recently escaped from the Augusta Transitional Center, which houses inmates who are nearing the end of their sentences, Leedahl said.

Ford was serving a 15-year sentence for a 1997 robbery in Clarke County and would have been eligible for parole in July, according to the state Department of Corrections.

The corrections department did not immediately return a message Sunday seeking comment on when Ford escaped from the detention facility.

A deacon of a church at United House of Prayer for All People in Miami is behind bars on a rape charge.

Police said the 15-year-old girl was attending a baby shower at the church over the weekend when the attack occurred.

The 46-year-old Irvin Jenkins is being held at a Miami-Dade Correctional facility on no bond on charges of sexual battery, kidnapping and lewd and lascivious molestation.

After he was arrested, Jenkins admitted that he was inside the church with the girl, but said he only masturbated on her, police said.

Police said it is possible Jenkins might have done the same thing before.

“Our experience tells us that you don’t become a rapist overnight,” Miami police Lt. Bill Schwartz said.

Police said Jenkins has a prior criminal record for burglary.

The church was locked Monday morning and the pastor did not return calls seeking comment.

Nobody answered the door at the home where Jenkins lives. Neighbor Sammy Stuart said Jenkins “was a nice guy” but said they mostly spoke to one another from across the fence.

Jenkins was ordered held without bond Monday.

Three Soweto schoolboys were arrested yesterday in connection with the rape and murder of a 44-year-old woman on Youth Day last year.

The police in Jabulani arrested the boys, aged between 16 and 18, at their different schools – Goudveld Senior Secondary School in Langlaagte, Johannesburg, Letare High School and Jabulani Technical College.

The half-naked body of Ntombikayise Mwelase was discovered by her friend Phumla Zulu, 41, on June 17. Mwelase, who was separated from her husband, lived alone at the time.

Police said Mwelase had been raped and then strangled.

Inspector Kay Makhubela said that following the police investigation, a 17-year-old youth was eventually linked to Mwelase’s case through fingerprints.

The 17-year-old has a pending case of housebreaking and theft in Meadowlands, police said.

A warrant for his arrest was issued after he failed to appear in court on several occasions. Makhubela said police swooped on the 17-year-old’s school after he had initially resisted attempts by his parents to hand him over.

“The parents informed us where his school was and when we got there he told us who he was with on the day of the murder. He said he only raped the woman but did not kill her,” Makhubela said.

The youths are expected to appear in the Protea magistrate’s court today.

Arrest made in 3-year-old murder of homeless woman

Police have arrested a registered sex offender on suspicion of the murder of Sharon Ostman, a homeless woman who was found dead in the creek below Mission Plaza on July 11, 2005.

At 1 p.m. Monday, San Luis Obispo police arrested Freddie Joe Lewis, 54, in connection with the case.

In the weeks following the murder, investigators interviewed more than 130 witnesses and persons of interest as far as as Florida, including known registered sex offenders in the San Luis Obispo area. Lewis was one of those people, though at the time there was no evidence linking him to the crime.

It wasn’t until the the following February, due to a backlog in the California Department of Justice, that analysis of physical evidence gathered in the days after Ostman’s death linked Lewis to the crime.

Investigators took several more months gathering addition evidence against Lewis. They say he was never a danger to the public during this time because he was either in custody (for unrelated parole violations), under police surveillance or wearing a GPS tracking device.

Police issued a warrant for his arrest. The case now will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office for the filing of criminal charges.

Mother Gets 4 Years In Son’s Death At Hands Of Boyfriend

A mother could spend up to four years in prison after she admitted to playing a role in the death of her son.

Luzmilda Blue pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of endangering children, following the June conviction of her boyfriend on murder and rape charges.

A judge sentenced Lamont Hunter to death in September for sexually assaulting and beating 3-year-old Trustin Blue, who later died from his injuries.

Luzmilda Blue may gain the opportunity for early release if she meets certain conditions ordered by a judge, and her case will be reviewed again next year.

She had previously lost custody of her son after Hunter was accused of causing broken bones and other injuries to the boy.

Five months after Trustin was returned to her care, he was brought to an emergency room with broken bones, severe bruising, bruised and swollen genitals and other injuries doctors said were consistent with rape.

The boy never regained consciousness and died the next day from what coroners said were two fatal blows to his skull.

An Ohio man already jailed for drugs faces charges of impregnating his girlfriend’s 10-year-old daughter.

The investigation began after the girl gave birth to a daughter in November at University Hospital in Cincinnati. The hospital reported the birth to the Hamilton County Department of Job and Family Services because of the mother’s age.

On Wednesday, investigators learned that Michael Chaffer’s DNA showed him to be the father, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Chaffer is in a jail in Columbus serving a one-year sentence.

Also Wednesday, there was a status hearing on the girl and baby. They originally lived with the girl’s mother, who was ordered not to allow any adult men into her home, until investigators found Chaffer there.

The baby is in a foster home, while the girl is living with relatives. The mother has been barred from seeing her granddaughter and can only have supervised visits with her daughter.

Accused University of Akron rapist linked to another attack

Investigators say DNA has linked a local man to another crime.

24-year-old Christopher Butts is now charged with kidnapping, attempted rape, gross sexual imposition, assault, burglary and robbery in an October attack.

It happened in the 900 block of Garfield Street, with a 33-year-old woman as the victim.

Butts is currently behind bars after being charged with three other attacks, all on female students attending the University of Akron.

The attacks all occurred in the community surrounding the campus.

In some of those attacks, police say Butts broke into the womens’ homes, and attacked them.

Police: 8-year-old discovered murdered mother’s body

Police said they were searching Wednesday for 37-year-old Vernon McNeil, a registered sex offender who was the mother’s boyfriend.

Memphis Police have arrested a man in connection with the death of a 36 year-old Millington woman. Her body was found on the floor in her home Wednesday by her eight year-old daughter.

Vernon Keith McNeil was arrested Friday, January 25 at an apartment in Covington. Investigators say he was hiding in the closet of a woman’s home; police are not yet sure who she is or how she may be involved.

A murder case that has been ongoing for the past 13 years has been solved, Livermore police said Saturday.

In 1995, Jennifer Atkinson was sexually assaulted and killed in her Livermore apartment.

Police Wednesday arrested Jack Bowie, a 43-year-old suspect in the slaying whose girlfriend lived in an adjacent apartment, and was one of the last people to see Atkinson alive.

According to police, modern DNA technology that became available last year sufficiently tied Bowie to the crime.

“To be able to identify a suspect through advanced technology, and to be able to take the suspect into custody, obviously we are very pleased,” Police Chief Steve Sweeney said. “It’s a major release for the department and to bring this information to the family is very special as well.”

Atkinson’s sister, Rebecca, said the arrest has restored her faith in the police.

“I want to thank the Livermore Police Department for never letting the family down,” she said.

A bitter exchange in a courtroom Tuesday as a Radcliff man was sentenced for the repeated abuse of two young girls, both relatives. Meeting him there was another relative of one of the victims. We want to warn you, some of the language in this story is very strong. WAVE 3’s Janelle MacDonald reports on what happened in court.

A jury convicted Clarence Tate last year of six counts each of rape and sodomy, 12 counts of incest and sexual abuse. It recommended he serve 365 years.

In court Tuesday, both sides agreed thatstate law won’t let that happen. The most Tate could ever serve would be 70 years; on Tuesday at least, that wasn’t the worst he faced.

Another relative of the victims, Lionel Green, told Tate his 70-year sentence was justice in the courts, and that street justice would be next. He added: “And if we go to hell together, I’m going to whoop your ass every day in hell.”

Judge Janet Coleman told Tate a pre-sentence report classified him as a high-risk to re-offend. She says it’s rare for that ever to show up in those types of documents. For that reason, she gave Tate the maximum, 70 years in prison.

The man known as the “Hyde Park Rapist” has moved to Melbourne, according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today.

Bobby Joe Helms was released Thursday morning from a state treatment center in Arcadia.

Helms was granted permission to move. But he’ll still be supervised, have a curfew and have to take lie detector tests. He has 48 hours to register as a sex offender in Brevard.

According to Gannett’s Tampa Bay 10 television, Helms said that he’s moving to Melbourne to live near his two brothers and two sisters, Florida Today reported.

Helms committed several rapes in the 1980s, mostly in the Hyde Park area. Police said he admitted to raping 12 women and trying to rape four more.

Helms served 13 years in prison. He was released in 1999 on probation and has been in a secured state treatment center since then.

Lee Conviction Upheld

New Orleans (AP) - A unanimous State Supreme Court decided to uphold the murder conviction and death sentence of Derrick Todd Lee Wednesday morning.

In 2004, Lee was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to die in the May 2002 killing of Charlotte Murray Pace, an LSU graduate student. She was one of a string of women police claim were murdered by a serial killer. Authorities testified Pace was raped, bludgeoned and stabbed more than 80 times. DNA lifted from semen found on her leg matched Lee’s profile.

Family members of the victims in most of the untried cases have said they do not want to go through another trial unless the Pace conviction or sentence is overturned. In Wednesday’s ruling, the Supreme Court Justices turned aside the defense’s three main challenges in the Pace case.

The defense claimed that DNA linking Lee to Pace’s murder was improperly obtained, that Lee is mentally retarded and therefore ineligible for the death penalty and that the trial should have been moved out of East Baton Rouge Parish.
