FBI arrests two Texas men (Texas men?) in relation to Troy couple’s slaying

TROY — Two more suspects will face charges in the alleged contract killings of a Troy couple, police said Saturday.

Narayan Thadani and Douglas Tabor, both Texas residents, were arrested late Friday night in the Houston area by FBI agents on charges of conspiracy to commit murder in conjunction. They are suspects in the deaths of Birj Mohan Chhabra, 65, and his wife Aasha Chhabra, 56. The couple was killed Tuesday in their home on Delaware Drive.

“These new arrests are important elements in the case against our suspects,” said Troy Police Lt. Gerard Scherlinck on Saturday.

Police said Miguel Angel Servando-Ortiz, 40, of Katy, Texas, and Nelson Oswaldo Mendoza, 34, of Houston traveled to Troy to carry out the murder-for-hire. They were arrested Tuesday by Taylor police during a traffic stop in which blood-stained clothing, a semi-automatic handgun and a map to the victims’ home were found inside their vehicle.

The pair were arraigned Friday in Troy on first degree premeditated murder and firearm charges. A preliminary exam is scheduled for March 27 in Troy District Court. Both are being held in the Oakland County Jail without bond. Servando-Ortiz is in the United States illegally, according to federal authorities.

Scherlinck said Thadani and Tabor are awaiting an appearance before a federal magistrate in Houston. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Detroit and Detroit FBI Office anticipate their extradition to Detroit to face federal charges in this case Monday, he said.

“This will not impede the prosecution for state offenses, although our suspects may also face federal charges,” he said.

Thadani is a longtime family friend of the Chhabra’s, against whom they had filed suit over the use of $1.5 million in funds associated with Aasha Chhabra’s family estate in India. Tabor is an associate of Thadani’s, Scherlinck said.

The News has reported how Servando-Ortiz and Mendoza, both El Salvador nationals, were allegedly promised $100,000 to kill the couple, according to prosecutors.

Both victims were found in the second-floor bedroom of their home. Both were killed by a single contact gunshot wound to the head.

Aasha Chhabra had multiple sclerosis and was largely confined to bed or a wheelchair. Her husband was a computer programming consultant and yoga instructor.

Aasha Chhabra apparently relied on Thadani’s help in liquidating assets left to her in India by her parents. Allegations contained within a still pending 2006 lawsuit show Aasha Chhabra alleged Thadani moved her funds to his own account — without her knowledge or permission — and refused her demands to return them to her, along with her passport, green card and ID.

A Houston mother and son allegedly hid a young girl and used her as a sex slave

Gregoria Salgada Vazquez and David Salazar were charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault of a child after they allegedly had the girl transported from Mexico to Houston, where they kept her pad locked in a room since Jan. 1, the TV station reports.

She reportedly was allowed to leave the room only when the two of them were present.

Police said the girl allegedly was forced to have sex with Salazar and also was taken to a Houston nigh club that the pair own and was forced to have sex with clients, the station reported.

The girl reportedly was freed after she got a hold of Salazar’s cell phone and called 911.

A DNA hit has led to an arrest for a crime that happened fifteen years ago.

Benjamin Ramirez-Segovia, 43, was arrested this week at a restaurant in Prince George’s County for the 1993 rape of a 9-year-old girl.

Ramirez-Segovia is now in an Arlington jail facing charges and the community where the crime occurred is finally expressing relief.

The now 24-year-old victim never thought Ramirez-Segovia would be caught and told police she is pleased with the news that DNA lead to the arrest of Ramirez-Segovia.

On November 10, 1993, the nine-year-old girl was walking home from school in the 2800 block of South Glebe Road when she was confronted by a man. The suspect grabbed the victim, forced her underneath a bridge adjacent to Four Mile Run, and sexually assaulted her. The girl ran home and reported the attack to her mother, who called police.

The young girl gave police an incredibly detailed description of the man who assaulted her, down to his broken teeth, but no arrest was made, until now.

On January 31, 2008, the evidence in this case was re-submitted to the Northern Virginia Forensic Laboratory for DNA analysis. In late February, the Special Victim’s Unit was notified that the evidence had yielded a hit in the national DNA database.

SVU detectives obtained a warrant for Benjamin Ramirez-Segovia. They arrested him on March 2 at his place of employment in Prince George County, Virginia, with the assistance of Prince George County Police and the Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Department.

At the time of the attack 15 years ago, he resided in Arlington. Ramirez-Segovia is charged with abduction with intent to defile. He is being held without bond in the Arlington County Detention Facility and additional charges are pending.

Tucson Police arrested three people Saturday afternoon in connection with the death of a cab driver.

Captain Bill Richards said officers arrested one man and two women from a midtown apartment complex, “We believe all three were present at the time the cab driver was murdered, robbery was the motive,” he said.

Police found Timothy Royce late Wednesday night in a midtown alley. The 27-year-old had been shot to death.

Dianna Barsotti, Royce’s mother said, “The news was shocking and I really want to take an opportunity to thank the Tucson Police Department.” His fiance Melissa Bothwick who is pregnant with Royce’s baby said, “Mostly relieved. Hopefully it will be the beginning of the end for some closure for some justice and for all of us and for Tim.”

Royce’s funeral services have been set for Wednesday.

Police identify three arrested in cab driver slaying

Tucson police have identified a young man, a woman and a teenager arrested Saturday in Wednesday’s slaying of a taxi cab driver.

Ruben E. Archunde, 20, Marisela N. Pacheco, 30, and Jessica R. Gallegos, 16, were booked into the Pima County Jail Saturday night, said Officer Frank Amado, a police spokesman.

They were held on suspicion of first degree murder, armed robbery and aggravated robbery, Amado said.

Driver Timothy R. Royce, 27, died of an apparent gunshot wound. His body was found in an alley around Sixth Avenue and Helen Street late Wednesday night near his abandoned Yellow Cab.

Police said Royce was shot to death in an apparent robbery and they are in the early stages of investigating “several scenarios.”

The house on Cambria Drive in the Innerarity Point community looks like any other cottage in this quiet, beach community…unassuming and quiet. But sheriff’s investigators in Escambia County, Florida, say the house was a supply and distribution center for a major drug operation.

“We’ve been looking at this house for four months,” says Glenn Austin, spokesman for the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. “Our narcotics agents and agents with the D.E.A. worked on this case.”

Ruben Flores and his step-son, Ivan Valdespino were arrested on dozens of drug trafficking charges. Agents found large amounts of crack cocaine, powder cocaine, meth and mushrooms inside the house. Detectives also seized cash, weapons and cars during the arrest.

“Because of this arrest, the drug flow in this part of the county will dry up or be reduced significantly,” says Austin.

Flores and Valdespino are in police custody tonight. Flores’ bond has been set 620-thousand dollars. Bond for Valdespino has been set at 875-thousand dollars. Even if Flores makes bond, he might not be released from jail. Agents in Texas have posted a warrant for Flores’ arrest on another case.

Woman convicted for selling pre-teen for sex

A woman pleaded guilty this week after prosecutors say she helped a man pay to have sex with a pre-teen girl.

38-year-old Tina Day pleaded guilty to promoting prostitution. Police say Surgio Viveros paid Day $15 to have sex with the girl. Viveros, was convicted Tuesday of paying twice to have sex with the child.

“It involved a betrayal of trust and a sense of isolation,” said Jackson Deputy Prosecutor Katie Mote. “It is especially upsetting in this case that the victim is a child.”

Viveros is a neighbor of Day’s at a Seymour apartment complex. He is now in the Jackson County Jail, not far from another man in the case, Jose Romero Mendez. Mendez, who is Day’s boyfriend, didn’t pay her to have sex with the girl, he just went ahead and molested her. He was convicted on two counts of child molest. The sex acts against the child happened over a two-month period over the summer.

“I think that’s a natural question to ask, for what could this money have been used,” Mote said. “I don’t know the answer.”

Police learned of the crime when the girl told a school counselor. Neighbors at the apartment complex are offended by the crime, but glad the men and Day were caught.

“I think it’s scary. I think that’s gross, just nasty,” one neighbor said.

A Lynbrook school janitor who police say left suggestive presents for a middle-school girl — including a box of Valentine’s chocolates and a $100 bill — and suggested a date with another student has been charged with endangering the children, according to Nassau police.

Francisco Avila, a janitor at Lynbrook North Middle School on Merrick Road, was escorted out of the school by district officials early Tuesday after they were notified that he’d made improper advances on two students, Lynbrook district superintendent Philip Cicero said.

Avila, 43, was told not to report to work on Wednesday or Thursday, when police say he was arrested at his Uniondale home. He remained in a Nassau jail late Friday, said his wife, Patricia Avila. When asked Friday if there was any truth to the allegations, she replied: “I really don’t know. This has come as a surprise to me.” Attempts to reach the family’s attorney were unsuccessful.

On three occasions, police said, Avila gave presents to a 13-year-old Lynbrook student. The first incident occurred in December, when Avila allegedly opened the girl’s locker without permission and left her a key chain and other gifts, police said.

On Valentine’s Day, Avila allegedly left the same girl a heart-shaped box of candies. The next day, police say he handed the girl a pack of gum containing a $100 bill and a note with his cell phone number.

JEW YORK — A cab driver who made headlines this week when he claimed that a passenger had abandoned a baby in his car was arrested Saturday and charged with making up the tale.

Police said the driver, Klever Sailema, was part of a scheme by an overwhelmed Bronx family to abandon the child, who had been born to a 14-year-old girl.

The family’s ill-conceived plot to turn the child over the city collapsed late Friday night and several people were under arrest early Saturday.

The baby’s mother has also been identified, but will likely not face charges because of her age, police said.

Investigators were still hunting for the child’s father, who was believed to be 27 years old, said Police Department spokesman Paul Browne.

New York State Federation Of Taxi Drivers Spokesman Fernando Mateo, who had championed Sailema as a hero earlier in the week, said he felt betrayed, but wouldn’t condemn the cabbie.

“I am looking at a desperate man who was trying to help a desperate family,” Mateo said.

The arrests were a stunning development in a case that had captivated the city after the adorable baby’s pictures were published in newspapers and broadcast on TV.

Sailema briefly became a media darling after he dropped the baby off at a Queens fire station Thursday, saying the child, who was about 6 months old, had been left in his car by a stranger.

The cabbie told investigators his fare was a nervous-looking man who had gotten in carrying the baby and a diaper bag, then asked the driver to pull over so he could make a phone call, and promptly fled.

Sailema even provided enough detail about the man’s appearance that police released a sketch of the suspect. He repeated his tale to reporters at a news conference on Friday.

Police now say that Sailema was in on the abandonment plot from the start.

Boise Police say a 16-year-old was driving drunk with the teen’s own mother in the car.

Officers tried to pull over a 1992 Nissan Maxima Saturday evening after they noticed the car was speeding and swerving in the area of ParkCenter and Apple Street.

After nearly a quarter mile, they finally pulled the car over. Inside, police found the 16-year-old driver - who they say was intoxicated. The driver’s mother was in the front passenger seat, according to police.

That woman - Emmaliza Casarez, 36, is charged with injury to children, and another charge related to encouraging the incident.

Both Caszrez and the 16-year-old have prior charges of driving under the influence - neither has a valid driver’s license. The teen now faces a new charge of DUI.

Two other juveniles and a 22-year-old male were also in the car at the time of the arrest.

More charges could be filed against Casarez in connection with the incident.

The Mexican government has applied to open a U.S. consulate in Boise.

It’s a controversial plan and we’ve already received several e-mails opposed to idea.

One of the main issues of contention is the identification cards that consulates give to illegal immigrants. Those cards help immigrants open bank accounts and rent apartments.

A Meridian woman, who asked not to be identified, says the matricula consular cards also help Mexican immigrants get a job.

“I don’t think illegals should have any right to be here and take jobs away from Idahoans or any us citizen. They have no permission to be here and I think a Mexican consulate here in Boise is just aiding and abetting that crime,” said a Meridian resident.

But Olivia Prado is a local restaurant owner and Mexican immigrant who came to the U.S. 27 years ago.

She says the consulate will provide many services to legal immigrants too, and provides limited help to illegals.

“It’s a good thing because then we have somebody to help people, right now we don’t have nobody, lot of people that don’t like us, we work hard for everybody, so I think it’s easy, we can have somebody to help our people,” said Prado.

Prado says a consulate in Boise will help many Mexicans avoid a long and costly trip to Salt Lake City, the location of the nearest Mexican consulate.

The Mexican Matricula Consular ID card is an ID card issued to Mexican foreign nationals in the United States. The matricula consular is useful in the United States only for illegal aliens, because legal immigrants by definition have legal U.S. government-issued documents.

After 9/11, the Mexican Government realized that they could not gain another U.S. amnesty for illegal aliens. Instead, they launched a lobbying campaign to gain acceptance of the ID at state and local levels and from U.S. banks.

King’s ’secure’ Matricula Consular ID cardU.S. Congressman Tom Tancredo said, “The only people who benefit from having such an ID are those who have come illegally and have broken our laws.” This ID card is essentially a back door attempt at a stealth amnesty and a direct challenge to the jurisdiction of Congress over U.S. immigration policy. Roberto Rodriguez Hernandez, director of the Mexican card program was quoted as saying “It’s necessary to push the need for an amnesty at all levels.”

A ’secure’ Matricula Consular ID card The matricula card is not a secure document (the Matricula Cards on this page are of American citizens). Mexico does not authenticate documents used to obtain the ID against computerized data files in Mexico. No major bank in Mexico accepts the card to open an account and the cards are recognized as IDs in only 10 of Mexico’s 32 states and districts.

Now, Guatemala, Honduras, Poland, Peru and El Salvador, aware of Mexico’s success, have begun or are considering issuing cards of their own.

Man Forces Disabled Woman To Have Sex With Strangers

A Pueblo man is being ordered to spend 10 years behind bars for forcing a developmentally disabled woman into having sex for money. Thirty-one-year-old Dale Linsley Fuentes had already pleaded guilty in January. Prosecutors said Fuentes beat the woman in question and held her captive, then forced her to have sex with strangers on at least 10 occasions. The men would pay Fuentes who would then use the money for drugs.

A Jacksonville doctor was recently arrested and is facing drug charges after police said he traded prescription drugs for sex (like cialis or viagra) .

According to investigators, 70-year-old Dr. Benjamin Malalang admitted to them that he has been trading prescriptions for sexual favors.

Malalang, who specializes in acupuncture, is now accused of serious drug charges.

“This doctor was trading sex for Oxycontin prescriptions,” said Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Chief John Hartley.

Investigators said about a week ago they got a tip from a woman who said the doctor would invite her to his Arlington home or to his office for her to perform a sex act on him and afterward he would write and give her a prescription in her name for Oxycontin.

On Thursday, police said they set up a sting and sent the woman and an undercover officer to Malalang. They said both agreed to the sex for prescription deal.

The sting resulted in Malalang’s arrest.

According to a police report, “He admitted to have sex in exchange for Oxycontin prescriptions for the last six months to a year.”

Hartley said the doctor admitted that there are at least four or five other women that had the same agreement with him.

Police continue to search for other possible victims, saying the alleged sex-for-drug deals could end in death.

“We’d like to get the message out to the family members and friends that this is a killer. It’s not hard to get addicted and it’s not hard to overdose,” Hartley said.

Claremont murder suspects charged; killing described

It began with some shoving. It ended with a father and son allegedly beating a man with a bolt cutter and stabbing him nine times.

Danny Ortega, 42, and his son Danny Ortega Jr., 20, both sat before a judge Tuesday morning in a Mantorville Courtroom. They were each charged with felony second-degree murder for the death of Troy Richard Ulrich, 42, of Claremont.

New details about the case emerged in court documents, indicating that a vicious fight between the Ortegas and Ulrich allegedly took place in an apartment garage before the victim’s murder.

“It was a horrendous, extremely violent confrontation,” said Dodge County Sheriff Gary Thompson. “It was extremely brutal.”

According to the criminal complaint, Ulrich had been drinking with two men in the garage area while they worked on cars. The Ortegas suddenly entered the garage. The dad confronted Ulrich and pushed him. Ulrich pushed back, and the two began fighting. Ulrich, whose left arm was amputated above the elbow, punched the father and knocked out a tooth.

The complaint states that the dad then took out a knife and began stabbing Ulrich. During the scuffle, the father dropped the knife, and the son picked up a bolt cutter and began hitting Ulrich in the head. Ulrich fell to the ground, and the father and son started kicking him in the head. The father picked up the bolt cutter and continued to hit Ulrich, and the son picked up the knife and stabbed the victim several times in the chest.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s preliminary report states that Ulrich suffered nine stab wounds and had several bruises on his face and head. The report concludes that Ulrich died of a puncture wound to the aorta — the largest artery in the human body.

The victim’s body was found Saturday morning in the hallway of the apartment building at 117 Second Street in Claremont by an 11-year-old girl.

During the court hearing, Dodge County Assistant Attorney Gary ReMine asked the judge to set bail for father and son at $1 million each. ReMine said the son had a ticket for a bus set to leave Austin at 11 p.m. Saturday for Florida, and said “we do consider him a flight risk.” He told the judge that the father tried to take the rap for his son.

“I think (the father) is responsible for the initial hiding of the knife and advising his son to leave,” ReMine said.

ReMine said he needs to review all the evidence before determining whether to seek first-degree murder charges against the two men. Thompson said he isn’t ruling out the possibility that more people could be arrested. He said his deputies have done an amazing job investigating this case, managing to arrest the suspects before the son had a chance to leave.

“I’m proud of the work that they did,” he said. “They jumped on this, and they did exactly what they needed.”

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS uncovered something that could be causing immigration officials confusion about the 23-year-old woman who caused a fatal bus accident in Cottonwood on Tuesday.

The state issued two identification cards under the name of Alianiss Nunez Morales. Both cards have the same name and birthdate.

In 2005, an Alianiss Nunez Morales was issued a state ID. She was five-feet four-inches and 140 pounds.

The next year, another state ID was issued to Alianiss Nunez Morales. She was listed as five-feet one-inch tall and only 115 pounds.

With such different physical descriptions, these cards probably weren’t issued to the same woman.

So how common is the name Alianiss Nunez Morales?

5 EYEWITNSES NEWS did a nationwide search and found only one other person in America with the same first name, last name and middle initial.

Before immigration officials can confirm Morales’ legal status, they need to confirm her identity.

The driver of a van that struck a school bus in a crash that left four students dead in rural southwestern Minnesota was arrested Thursday, officials said.

Alianiss Nunez Morales, 23, of Minneota, was booked into the Lyon County jail in Marshall on suspicion of criminal vehicular operation.

County Attorney Rick Maes said he hoped to file formal charges against Morales on Friday after reviewing additional reports from law enforcement, including witness statements.

Authorities were continuing to investigate the crash Thursday but were sending Maes information as they obtained it, said Lt. Brian West of the Minnesota State Patrol. The criminal vehicular operation charge means “driving conduct contributed to the death of another human being,” West said.

It remained unclear whether Morales had a valid driver’s license, and West declined to comment. She was convicted in 2006 of driving without a valid driver’s license, according to court records.

Morales was driving a van on Tuesday afternoon heading east on County Road 24, which has a stop sign as it intersects with state Highway 23, the road the bus was traveling. The van struck the bus, which rolled over onto a truck.

The driver of the truck told a Twin Cities newspaper that he saw the van run the stop sign.

“I saw the maroon van run a stop sign, it blew over the railroad tracks and hit the bus, sending it sliding into me,” James M. Hancock, 45, of Marshall, told the newspaper from his hospital bed in Sioux Falls, S.D. “The next thing I knew, they were hauling kids out and it was chaos.”

Hancock, who remained in fair condition, did not want to give interviews Thursday, said Kenyon Gleason, a spokesman for Avera McKennan in Sioux Falls, S.D.

West said he couldn’t say whether Morales ran the stop sign and wouldn’t discuss the circumstances of the crash.

“We’ve been examining as much information as we can, but we’re not able to discuss that at this point,” he said.

Before the arrest, Morales could not be reached for comment and did not have a listed phone number.

There are six levels of criminal vehicular operation under Minnesota law, and all but one are considered serious felonies. The charge comes when someone causes harm to another person while operating a vehicle in a grossly negligent manner or when under the influence of alcohol.

The crash killed brothers Jesse Javens, 13, and Hunter Javens, 9, both of Cottonwood; Reed Stevens, 12, of Marshall; and Emilee Olson, 9, of Cottonwood. They were among the 28 students on the Lakeview School bus. At least 14 other people were hurt.

Arrest made in brutal Ruidoso slaying

Extradition is under way for a 36-year-old Texas man (”Texas” man?) following his indictment in a local murder case.

An Otero County grand jury returned the indictment Tuesday against Guillermo Ruiz, of El Paso, Texas, for first degree murder, attempted criminal sexual penetration and other charges.

Ruiz is accused of stabbing Anabel Calzaba Alvarado, 20, of Ruidoso, in a secluded area behind the Casino Apache Travel Center on U.S. Highway 70 just outside Ruidoso, on Dec. 18.

According to a police affidavit filed in New Mexico, Ruiz then placed the young woman’s body on the floor of the back seat of his car the same back seat where the woman’s 2-year-old son was sitting.

Ruiz told El Paso police that he drove to El Paso, changed at his house and headed to Juarez where he burned the woman’s body and abandoned her child in the streets of downtown Juarez. Ruiz told police the child was asleep throughout the ordeal, according to the affidavit.

“There was no violence on the child but he was put in an abusive situation, perhaps witnessing the murder of his mother and being driven by a perfect stranger to be left in Juarez,” said 12th Judicial District Attorney Scot Key.

When describing what made him push Alvarado out of the parked car and stab her in the heart, Ruiz allegedly told police he “had darkness inside me,” according to the affidavit.

Otero County Sheriff John Blansett recalled the case.

“It happened on Native American land,” he said. “But because there were a couple of non-native whites involved, it was turned over to the New Mexico State Police.” (Spiggers are considered as “White” by the federal and state governments in crime reporting. Of course this inflates and distorts White crime figures but hey, who cares? It makes niggers look less criminal than what they actually are).

An arrest warrant has been issued by District Judge Jerry Ritter, setting Ruiz’s bond at $1 million.

“The defendant is currently incarcerated in the El Paso County Detention Center awaiting extradition back to New Mexico,” said Deputy District Attorney David Ceballes.

In addition to the murder and criminal sexual penetration charges, Ruiz also faces four counts of felony tampering with evidence; felony abuse of a child with no death or great bodily harm, first offense; and felony false imprisonment.

A Tempe woman is under arrest for murder. 45-year-old Cynthia Hernandez is accused of killing her own son.

Police were called to an apartment near the Superstition Freeway and Mill Avenue just after 8:00 a.m. Friday. The man who called 911 claimed he had awakened and found his son, 14-year-old Jeremy Barragon, was dead.

Officers determined the teen had been fatally shot, secured the scene and started a search for evidence and a suspect. Later in the day, the department issued an advisory that there were no outstanding suspects in the case and no one should feel, “their safety is in jeopardy.”

14 hours after the initial call, a Tempe police spokesman announced the arrest of Hernandez. He said further details would be made available at a Saturday morning news conference.

Husband Charged in Cary Woman’s Slaying - Harish Purushottamdas Patel

Cary — Cary police Monday night charged Harish Purushottamdas Patel, 60, with murder in the death of his estranged wife, whose burned body was found in Virginia last month.

“As sad as this case is, we are pleased to have been able to bring it to such a swift and certain conclusion,” said Cary Police Chief Pat Bazemore. “It’s important for our citizens to know that this was not a random act of violence against someone in our community.”

Police took Patel, of 1128 Woodway Bluff Circle, to the Wake County Public Safety Center for processing.

Vanlata Patel, 57, was last seen Jan. 16, her son, Ashesh Patel, told WRAL. She was reported missing Jan. 18 after she failed to board a plane the previous day to Toronto.

According to Mecklenburg County, Va., authorities, firefighters found Vanlata Patel’s body about 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 wrapped in a comforter at the center of a brush fire about 20 feet off an embankment along Interstate 85’s mile marker 19.

On Jan. 22, medical examiners conclusively identified the charred remains as being Patel.

The Patels had been married since 1996 and had adult children from previous marriages. She filed for divorce in November.

Court records show Vanlata Patel had a dispute with her estranged husband over how their financial assets should be divided.

In her divorce complaint, Vanlata Patel requested a majority of more than $400,000 in Swiss bank accounts that she shared with Harish Patel, including $100,000 she claimed was a gift from her parents that she was keeping in the account for her son from a previous marriage.

Bazemore said she had talked with the victim’s son and that he said he was relieved over the arrest, even if it was his stepfather that was charged.

Patel was being held without bond Monday night. His is scheduled to be in court Tuesday morning.

Arrest made in 1997 rape-murder of U. of Colo. student

More than 10 years after a University of Colorado senior was raped and beaten to death, police think they’ve cracked the once-cold case.

Police armed with DNA evidence on Sunday announced the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Susannah Chase, who was found bleeding in an alley in December 1997.

Detective Chuck Heidel, who had worked the case from the start, broke the news to Chase’s mother Friday. “She is extremely happy, she and her family,” Heidel said.

The suspect, Diego Olmos-Alcalde, 38, was being held on $5 million bail on charges of first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping and first-degree sex assault.

“The department is ecstatic over this,” Police Chief Mark Beckner said.

Police learned Thursday that DNA from the case matched a profile entered by authorities in Wyoming, where Olmos-Alcalde had served time for a kidnapping in 2000, Beckner said. He allegedly broke his parole in October.

An arrest warrant was issued after he failed to report to a Wyoming parole officer, Beckner said. Working on information that the suspect had family in the Denver area, police arrested him Saturday at his mother’s home in Aurora on the parole violation. While in jail, he was arrested for the Chase murder.

“As you might imagine our emotions have run the gamut since we first heard of the DNA match with Susannah’s case,” parents Hal and Julie Chase said in a written statement. “We are delighted that a suspect has been identified and apprehended.”

Susannah Chase, a 23-year-old from Stamford, Conn., was walking home alone early Dec. 21, 1997, after an argument with her boyfriend when someone beat her with a baseball bat and left her for dead in an alley a block from her home. She later died from her injuries.

Police have said they believe the attack was random. In recent years, as forensic science was enhanced, detectives focused on DNA found in seminal fluid in Chase’s body.

Melinda Brazzale, of the Wyoming Department of Corrections, said she did not know when Olmos-Alcalde’s DNA was taken. He had been sentenced on charges involving kidnapping and terrorizing, and was allowed to serve at least part of the sentence in Colorado, she said.

Olmos-Alcalde had not previously come up as a possible suspect, Beckner said. He said the DNA was a key piece of evidence leading to the arrest but that investigators used other information, which he declined to disclose.

Boulder County Jail officials did not make Olmos-Alcalde available for comment by telephone. A jail official did not know whether he had an attorney, and the prosecutor’s office was closed Sunday.

Police planned to file their arrest warrant affidavit Monday.

Heidel said Chase’s parents have been supportive throughout. “Because the investigation went down a lot of blind alleys, leading to a lot of dead ends, they went down those with us,” said Heidel.

Ron Stump, university vice chancellor for student affairs, said he hoped the arrest would lead to closure in the death of Chase.

“As promised at her memorial, we will continue at CU-Boulder to build, in her memory, a community that strives to eliminate violence in all its forms, but particularly violence against women,” he said.

Fairfax County police say DNA evidence links three additional suspects to a robbery at the Chantilly Prime Mart last summer.

Two masked men entered the store in the 4300 block of Chantilly Avenue just after 6 a.m. on June 22, 2007. The men overpowered the clerk and stole cash and items from the store. The robbers then fled in a waiting car driven by a third man.

“They were positive results enabling robbery squad to make three additional arrests,” said Officer Don Gotthardy.

Responding officers arrested a man nearby who, they say, matched the description of one of the robbers. Robert F. Price, 30, was charged with robbery and abduction with the intent to extort money.

The lead detective in the case submitted DNA evidence to the state lab in late 2007. The results led investigators to arrest three additional suspects: Antonio Wilson, 26; Rickey Fentrell Price, 22; and Devin Manigo, 30. The men face several charges, including robbery.

Because of previous crimes, their DNA was in the state data base and that’s how police got a match from the crime scene and stolen case.

“If the took the means of DNA to do it, I think that’s a good thing that they’re able to track them that fast It think that’s great,” said one customer.

Clarksville police arrested another person in connection with a bank robbery Tuesday on Wilma Rudolph Boulevard.

Police said Alajandro Briones drove the vehicle used in the robbery.

Two men tried to leave the F&M bank with cash and a hostage.

The dye pack exploded, the bank teller got away and a bank customer tried to block Roberto Gomez Vazquez with her truck.

Vazquez shot at her before carjacking another woman, according to police.

Police quickly surrounded the vehicle and shot and killed him.

Police said the bank robbery suspect arrested Tuesday is now believed to be Hilberto Lerma. He was previously identified as Jose Garcia.

Police: Stepfather Killed Baby By Slamming Her Against Bedpost

A one year-old baby is dead and Memphis Police say the killer is her stepfather.

24 year-old Danny Amador is charged with first degree murder. Investigators say Amador swung 13 month-old Cynthia Ramirez against a wooden bedpost Thursday, November 17th, inside their home in the 3000 block of Capri.

When questioned by police, Danny Amador says he dropped the baby on the floor so that he could “scare her into being quiet.” The violent death of this 13 month-old has sent chills through this usually upbeat Parkway Village neighborhood. Sharon Williams says losing a child is “the worse thing that could ever happen to a parent.”

Investigators say Danny Amador shook his one year-old stepdaughter because she wouldn’t stop crying. According to the affidavit he then swung the baby into a large wooden bedpost. She was rushed to the hospital, where she died a few hours later.

Less than a block away, Sharon Williams watches after her six year-old grandson Jalen. She says if the unthinkable ever happened to him “it’ll hurt more than anything in the world because I love my grandson. He means the world to me. If I’m down and depressed and low, he comes and visits me and it lifts my spirits up.”

Danny Amador has been charged with First Degree Murder. His next court date is set for Tuesday, January 22nd. The baby’s mother was also arrested, but investigators have questioned her and say she will not face any charges. She has since been released.

Taunting a Factor in Tiger Attack

Police believe the three people mauled by a tiger yelled and waved at the cat from atop a railing before it lunged at them, but experts say that’s only a notch up from the type of taunting animals regularly endure at the nation’s zoos.

One study concluded that as many as one in four zoo visitors razz the animals in some way, and large predators like tigers are a prime target.

Paul Dhaliwal, one of the two surviving victims, told the father of the teenager killed in the Christmas Day attack that while the three climbed the 3-foot-tall railing and tried to get the tiger’s attention, they never threw or dangled anything into the pen, according to a search warrant affidavit filed late Thursday.

Dhaliwal, 19, was severely injured when the 250-pound Siberian tiger named Tatiana clawed its way up the wall of its enclosure, leapt out and mauled him. His brother, Kulbir, 24, was also injured, and their friend, 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr., was killed.

The tiger “may have been taunted/agitated by its eventual victims,” Inspector Valerie Matthews wrote in the affidavit. Police believe “this factor contributed to the tiger escaping from its enclosure and attacking its victims,” she wrote.

All three victims had marijuana in their systems, and Paul Dhaliwal’s blood alcohol level was 0.16 - twice the legal limit for driving, according to the affidavit.

“Clearly there’s the lesson to be learned here,” said zoo spokesman Sam Singer. “The lesson is that it’s not a good idea to drink, it’s not a good idea to be high on dope, and it’s not a good idea to taunt a man-eating tiger.”

Authorities were weighing whether to seek criminal charges against the Dhaliwals, but their lawyer, Mark Geragos, said they have presented no evidence of a crime. Geragos, who has repeatedly said the brothers didn’t taunt the tiger, also noted that the affidavit does not specify any possible counts.

Arrest Made in Ocoee Rape Investigation

Ocoee Police have arrested a man they say tried to rape a woman Saturday morning, January 12 at a beauty salon on Silver Star Road in Apopka.

Lorenzo Soto, 29, was arrested Thursday night in Apopka.

He faces several charges, including aggravated assault and attempted rape.

Investigators say Soto walked into the salon Saturday morning, and asked the woman who was working if he could use the restroom. The woman told investigators he then tried to rape her.

A business owner nearby heard the woman screamed and called police.

Sixth Immokalee slavery case suspect arrested - Group accused of keeping beating, stealing from Immokalee laborers

In one of the largest slavery prosecutions Southwest Florida has ever seen, authorities arrested a sixth suspect Wednesday, charging her with making money off unpaid illegal immigrant farm workers.

Antonia Zuniga Vargas appeared in court for the first time Thursday to listen to the charges: conspiring to make money off workers from Mexico and Guatemala, forging documents and committing identity theft. The details are laid out in a 17-count indictment filed Wednesday.

Vargas, along with her co-defendants, are connected to an Immokalee business operation allegedly designed to hold workers in involuntary servitude and peonage.

“Slavery, plain and simple,” said Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney Doug Molloy.

Answering questions “yes” and “no,” Vargas listened to the charges and said, “None of that is true.”

For two years, federal prosecutors claim, Vargas, along with Cesar, Geovanni, Jose, Villhina and Ismael Navarrete held more than a dozen people as slaves on their property. They made them sleep in box trucks and shacks, charged them for food and showers, didn’t pay them for picking produce and beat them if they tried to leave.

Molloy, who’s been a prosecutor in this region for more than two decades, said he’s never seen a similar case. Both the number of cooperating law enforcement agencies - six federal agencies and the Collier County Sheriff’s Office - and the number of charges are unprecedented, he said.

“They really did cover the gamut in a criminal enterprise for slavery,” Molloy said of the defendants.

In the past 10 years, prosecutors have handled several slavery cases, but none as large as this. In 1999, Abel Cuello pleaded guilty to buying smuggled workers from Mexico and holding them captive. In 2005, three Guatemalans were arrested in Fort Myers for holding a 13-year-old Guatemalan girl as a slave.

According to the federal indictment, the Navarrete family and Vargas threatened the immigrants, held their identification documents, created debit accounts they couldn’t repay and hooked them on alcohol to keep them working. The documents list 13 instances when the workers were beaten. Molloy said he couldn’t reveal where they are today, but said they’re safe.

“Some of the folks have been there for years,” Molloy said. “It is the hope to send back money to their families, and they hang on to that hope. It’s just a situation that’s difficult to get out of.”

Molloy said it’s too early to estimate how much prison time each defendant could face. The first 10 counts, which apply to Cesar and Geovanni Navarrete, each carry a penalty of up to 20 years. Penalties for some of the other charges range from 5 to 10 years.

Grand jury re-indicts Immokalee family charged with aiding illegal aliens

A federal grand jury re-indicted members of an Immokalee family today, who were charged with harboring and helping 15 illegal aliens stay in Immokalee on their property back in December.

Cesar Navarrete, Geovanni Navarrete, Jose Navarrete and their mother Villhina “Virginia” Navarrete, were arrested on Nov. 29 after a nine-day investigation.

During the investigation, at least one of the illegal aliens told authorities the suspects charged the men fees for what they needed, such as $5 to take a shower with a garden hose. Others were forced to live in shacks and trucks on the family’s property.

The last two suspects involved in the case, Ismael “Michael” Navarrete and Antonia Zuniga Vargas were later taken into custody, with Zuniga Vargas being arrested Wednesday, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas Molloy said in an interview Thursday.

According to the 17-count indictment, Cesar Navarrete and Geovanni Navarrete beat, threatened, restrained and locked workers in trucks to force them to work for them as agricultural laborers. The defendants underpaid the workers and imposed escalating debts on them, threatening physical harm if workers left their employment before their debts had been repaid.

Cesar, Geovanni, Jose, Villhina, Ismael Navarrete and Antonia Zuniga Vargas are also charged with harboring undocumented foreign nationals for private financial gain, commercial advantage, document fraud, and identity theft. Cesar Navarrete is charged with feloniously re-entering the United States after being convicted of a felony and deportation. Jose Navarrete and Ismael Michael Navarrete are charged with re-entering the United States after being deported.

If convicted, Geovanni and Cesar Navarrete each face maximum sentences of over 200 years imprisonment. Antonia Zuniga Vargas and Villhina Navarrete face imprisonment of 40 years, and Jose and Ismael Navarrete face imprisonment of 42 years.

Molloy said Thursday’s indictments come after a more than month long investigation involving several federal agencies, including the FBI, the Social Security Administration, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

He called what the Navarrete family was doing slavery.

“It’s a crime that we take really seriously,” said Molloy.

An arraignment hearing is scheduled before U.S. Magistrate Judge Douglas N. Frazier on Wednesday in Fort Myers.

Six indicted on slavery charges

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA - A brutal case of slavery in Southwest Florida was revealed on Thursday afternoon.

Six people were indicted on federal charges, accused of enslaving the undocumented workers they recruited from Mexico and Guatemala to work the fields in Southwest Florida.

Chief Assistant US Attorney Douglas Malloy tells WINK News, “Slaves are typically recruited in their home and what they really want to do is send money home to their families. So, they pin all of their hopes and dreams on these smugglers to bring them here.”

But when the people got to the United States, they were allegedly subjected to violence and sometimes locked away for hours at a time inside trucks if they threatened to leave.

“There’s a great deal of violence in this case,” explained Malloy, “They actually locked some of the slaves in box trucks at night and let them out in the morning to work the fields. Their money was confiscated and like I said, if they complained, they were either beaten or imprisoned.”

The allegations of abuse go back as far as 2005 in Collier and DeSoto Counties.

The smuggled workers plans to send money to their families at home would not happen.

“They would accrue a smuggling debt and in this case, the debt never went down because the enslavers charged them. They would take money out for food, transportation to the fields or for their green cards. In this case, they even charged them for showers and so the slave debt never goes down and they continued to be indebted to the slavers,” said Malloy.

There accused enslavers are facing 18 counts together, which carry a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count. All six are being held in the Lee County Jail without bond.

Teen nails burglar with bat inside Mesa home

A 14-year-old boy came face to face with a burglar ransacking his Mesa home on Tuesday and used a baseball bat to level the playing field.

Michael Six hid in his bedroom closet and called 911 after seeing a man using a screwdriver to break into a sliding-glass door.

The Kino Junior High ninth-grader talked in a low voice as he described the burglar’s whereabouts.

Then, Michael, clutching an aluminum baseball bat, heard his locked bedroom door rattle as the man used the screwdriver to bust in.

“You need to get out of the window,” the 911 operator told Michael.

“I can’t,” he answered with a hint of anxiety in his voice.

“I didn’t know what to do,” Michael said Wednesday. “I didn’t think I could pop (the window) open. My adrenaline was running. I was scared.”

The man was still clutching the screwdriver as he rummaged through the boy’s backpack. Then, Michael, a 5-foot-10-inch, 150-pound former baseball player, stepped out and swung.

The burglar cursed as Michael nailed him on the lower back and on the left shoulder.

“Sorry, man!” Michael yelled amid the chaos. Michael said the man, described as “big,” then “turned around and took (the bat) from me.”

The burglar ran out the back as Michael, uninjured, busted through a window and met police.

Police arrested Thomas Gonzales Garza, 30, of Chandler.

Police have arrested a man and confiscated nearly 200 roosters that were part of a cock fighting operation in the northern Indiana town of Ligonier.

It was actually a tip that led authorities to the property this past weekend where the cock fighting allegedly took place. They arrested 34-year old Eleazar Sandoval after finding gruesome evidence.

Noble County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Walker was one of the first officers on the scene, “I was very surprised just with the number, just walking in, it was kind of overwhelming and then finding the clumps of blood and feathers, things of that nature, it is kind of surprising.”

Walker says the tip came from a man who bet on the fights, “A gentleman had called stating he had lost all of his money in what he called rooster fighting”

After getting a search warrant, police found 197 roosters and animal fighting paraphernalia. They also found two arena style fighting areas which provided Walker and the authorities even more evidence, “With all that together, we kind of thought that they’d been doing this for a while.”

Sandoval had been leasing the barns on the property where the fighting allegedly took place He was booked on Sunday and faces a number of charges, including Possession of Animals for Fighting and Cruelty to Animals.

A burglary suspect pulled out a gun and pointed it at a Scottsdale officer on Wednesday afternoon, but was quickly disarmed by a second officer standing nearby.

Police say Sonia Rodriguez and Octaviano Meza had tried to rob a home at Scottsdale Road and McDowell Road earlier in the day.

Officers arriving at the scene then found the suspects fleeing the area in a vehicle.

Upon stopping their car, both were arrested; Meza for an outstanding warrant and Rodriguez for failure to provide identification.

Police say Rodriguez then complained about her handcuffs being too tight while trying to turn her wrists.

As the arresting officer was adjusting the handcuffs, Rodriguez apparently pulled one of her hands free and retrieved a revolver from her front waistband.

A second officer was able to grab the gun and disable the trigger while other officers disabled Rodriguez and re-handcuffed her.

No one was injured during the event.

Due to statements that Rodriguez made, she was booked on charges of Attempted 1st Degree Murder and other weapons charges then transported to the county jail.

But police soon realize her family is holding something back and isn’t fully cooperating with them. Later, investigators find out that relatives have arranged the woman’s release on their own. And they discover that members of the family are heavy into marijuana trafficking.

The case illustrates how a terrifyingly common crime in Latin America has moved across the border into the United States: Criminals and their family members are being kidnapped by fellow criminals and held for six-figure ransoms.

The abductions are occurring in the Phoenix area at the rate of practically one per day, and police suspect they have led to killings in which bound and bullet-riddled bodies have been found dumped in the desert.

The kidnap victims are typically drug- or immigrant-smugglers, who are seen as inviting targets because they have a lot of money, they can raise large sums of cash on short notice, and they are unlikely to go to the police, for fear their own shady dealings will come to light.

“We have never had a victim that we have investigated that has been as clean as the new driven snow,” said Sgt. Phil Roberts, who investigates the kidnappings. “There has always been some type of criminal element to it. Either they are criminals, drug dealers or human smugglers — or a close family member is.”

The kidnappers themselves are fellow traffickers who are doing it for the money or to punish their rivals.

Phoenix had more than 340 reported such kidnappings last year, but police said the real number is much higher because many cases go unreported.

The San Diego area has also seen a rise in kidnappings over the past year, with two or three reported during busy weeks, and some victims were mixed up in drug smuggling. But the hostage-taking appears to be most prevalent in Phoenix, the nation’s biggest base of operations for immigrant smugglers.

Kidnappings are common in Mexico, and the victims often include criminals as well as legitimate businessmen, such as bankers. Phoenix police said they believe the kidnappers here are not going after legitimate businessmen for fear their families will go to the police.

The kidnappings first came to light in Phoenix three years ago but are rising as overall violence associated with immigrant smuggling intensifies in Arizona.

Immigrant smuggling is a lucrative line of work: A ring that moves a load of 30 illegal immigrants through Arizona can gross $45,000 to $75,000.

And smugglers can quickly get their hands on large sums of money — sometimes in the middle of the night. In one case, someone who turned to authorities about a kidnapping brought more than $300,000 in ransom money to the police department in cereal boxes.

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (CBS) ― Authorities said Friday they believe they found the shallow grave of a pregnant Marine in the back yard of a comrade she accused of rape, and a person close to the case said the suspect left a note insisting the woman had killed herself.

After some slight digging in a fire pit discovered in the yard of Marine Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean, detectives found what “appeared to be burnt human remains,” Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson said Friday night.

“We think we have found what will (contain) the skeletal remains of Maria Lauterbach,” Hudson said. Authorities placed a tarp and two white tents over the area and planned to begin slowly scraping the earth with garden tools Saturday morning.

Lance Cpl. Maria Frances Lauterbach, 20, vanished three weeks ago, days after she talked to military prosecutors about a rape case against Laurean, who remains at large. Authorities said Friday that information from another woman, a former Marine, left them certain that she is dead.

That witness is Laurean’s wife, a person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation remains ongoing. Before fleeing Jacksonville on Friday, Laurean gave his wife a note that said Lauterbach cut her own throat, the person said.

Laurean said in the note that he had nothing to do with her suicide, but that he had buried her body, the person said.

“If he’s telling it like he wants to tell it, it would be foolish to run from what he claims happened,” Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown said in a news conference Friday evening.

“I do think this case is going to be a bizarre ending, yes. When I say ‘bizarre’ I mean more than just a death and a burial,” Brown said.

Brown added that evidence was mounting which seemed to contradict Laurean’s note.

Hidden Cam Shows Woman Repeatedly Slapping Helpless Handicapped Man

A 56-year-old Central Florida woman was arrested after a hidden surveillance camera videotaped her repeatedly slapping and hitting a mentally handicapped man.

Vincent Dimartino said he put three hidden surveillance cameras in his Port Orange home after he suspected that his 17-year-old son wasn’t being taken care of properly by caregiver Rabha Assal Merlino.

When Merlino would come to care for Dimartino’s son, she would bring the 42-year-old victim who has Down’s Syndrome and suffers from diminished mental capacity, according to a police report.

Dimartino said the first tape he checked showed the woman delivering repeated blows to a man’s head and face.

The sound of the strikes to the head and face can be heard on the tape.

“There is no doubt that that individual was helpless and could not defend himself,” Port Orange police Capt. Frank Surmaczewicz said. “It is probably one of the worst incidents that we have seen.”

“It is still too hard to watch,” Dimartino said. “I feel angry and betrayed. She always swore how much she loved Vincent. In my head, I still hear the slapping,” Dimartino said.

Marlino spent up to 20 hours a week at the alleged victim’s home to provide caregiver services for the last four years.

Police said there are six other videos in police possession allegedly showing the woman stealing food and items, Local 6’s Adam Longo said.

Polk dad charged in baby’s death - Officials said the man told them he beat his daughter because he had wanted a son.

Marcos Gomez-Romero told sheriff’s detectives he wanted a son.

Every time he looked at his baby girl, Gomez-Romero said he grew annoyed and angry because she was not the boy he had hoped for.

Gomez-Romero told detectives that abusing his daughter, Ariana Lizeth Rodriguez-Romero, became such a “habit” that he slapped her while she slept.

On Thursday, a Polk County grand jury indicted Gomez-Romero, 28, on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse for Ariana’s death.

A medical examiner found dozens of internal and external injuries on Ariana’s body. The infant had five new fractures on her ribs and more than a dozen old fractures. There was a hematoma and a cut on her spleen. Her liver was bruised, as was her jaw.

When questioned by a Polk County sheriff’s detective the day after Ariana died, Gomez-Romero said he was angry when his daughter was born because he wanted a son, reports said.

Gomez-Romero, who lives in Winter Haven, told a detective he called his daughter an “ugly girl, a prostitute and deny [sic] she was his daughter,” a Sheriff’s Office report said.

Gomez-Romero said he picked Ariana up by her hands to carry her. He said he spanked her several times out of anger because she would not stop crying.

When a detective asked Gomez-Romero what a 4-month-old could do to warrant such severe punishment, the report said he stated, “Nothing.”

“Gomez-Romero made it clear that his anger and hostility towards his daughter was due to the fact that she was a girl and he had wanted a son,” the sheriff’s report said.

Sheriff’s detectives also interviewed Ariana’s mother, Juana Rodriguez-Perez, who said Gomez-Romero would carry Ariana by her hands into the bedroom and close the door.

Shortly after, the report said, their daughter would begin to cry.

Rodriguez-Perez told the detective when she threatened to call the police on Ariana’s father, he would threaten to leave with their 2-year-old son.

Gomez-Romero is being held at the Polk County Jail.

State Attorney’s Office spokesman Chip Thullbery on Friday said that although the infant’s mother has not been arrested, “the possibility of charging her has not been foreclosed at this moment.”

BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. — Lam Luong initially told police that his girlfriend had his four young children and failed to return them, but his family suspected something more sinister: that he traded the kids for a drug fix.

The truth appears to be even worse. Police say Luong broke down under questioning and confessed to tossing the children — ages 4 months, 1, 2 and 3 — off the highest point of the Dauphin Island bridge near the Gulf of Mexico.

Mobile County Sheriff’s Flotilla Capt. Paul Stewart on Wednesday searches the waters north of the Dauphin Island bridge.

He had been fighting with his wife, Ngoc Phan, in part about the girlfriend, said Kam Phengsisomboun, Phan’s brother-in-law.

Phengsisomboun said a police witness reported seeing at least part of the horror: someone throwing a bundle from the bridge Monday as three children sat in a nearby car. Other details about the witness account were not immediately available from authorities.

The bridge is 80 feet tall at the highest part of the span, the water up to 55 feet deep, and rescuers searched Wednesday without hope of finding the children alive. Divers aided by cadaver dogs in boats searched near the bridge, while others in boats and helicopters covered an area totaling 100 square miles in case the current swept the bodies into the gulf.

The search was called off late Wednesday afternoon when dense fog rolled in, completely obscuring the bridge.

Missing and presumed dead were 4-month-old Danny Luong; 1-year-old Lindsey Luong; 2-year-old Hannah Luong; and 3-year-old Ryan Phan. Phan is not the man’s biological child, but Luong raised him from infancy, authorities said.

Some family members and friends held out hope that the children survived.

“I just pray for the kids, that they are still alive,” said Van Lam, a family friend who was at an Oriental market along with the children’s maternal grandmother Wednesday afternoon.

Luong, 37, is charged with four counts of capital murder.

He came to Alabama from Vietnam in 1984 and worked as a shrimper, Phengsisomboun said. The couple lived with Ngoc Phan’s mother at Bayou La Batre, a fishing village 20 miles southwest of Mobile with a large Southeast Asian community.

Phengsisomboun said the couple had recently moved back to the area from Hinesville, Ga.

Luong had argued with his wife Sunday night and again Monday before taking the children, Phengsisomboun said. Luong’s girlfriend, who is from New York but had been living in a Gulfport, Miss., hotel, was a factor in the dispute, he said.

Luong left the home with two of the children, then later came back for the other two, he said.

Investigators and family members said Luong reported the children missing Monday, claiming he had given the kids to his girlfriend and that she failed to return them. Authorities said he changed his story Tuesday night after they found holes in his account.

Phengsisomboun said he initially feared Luong had traded the children to buy drugs. Luong had a crack habit and had rapidly spent money from an insurance settlement after an automobile accident, he said.

Luong was arrested last Oct. 19 in Hinesville on a charge accusing him of possessing crack cocaine; a grand jury has not acted on the case. According to a police report, he called police looking to turn himself in.

Luong was scheduled to appear in court Thursday on the murder charges. District Attorney John Tyson said he did not believe Luong had a lawyer.

His 23-year-old wife was in seclusion Wednesday at her mother’s brick home, the front porch cluttered with children’s shoes.

Two men have been arrested and a third is being sought in a double-shooting Sunday night in Sevier County, Sheriff Ron Seals said today.

Kevin Anthony Dickson Jr., 26, of Sevierville and Jessie James Davis, 27, of Dandridge have both been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Warrants have been issued for Johnny Ramirez of Kodak, also charging him with attempted first-degree murder.

Ramirez is believed to have fled the state, according to Seals.

Dickson was taken into custody around noon Monday by Capt. Jeff McCarter and Detective Matthew Cubberley, who are investigating the shooting, in a home in Pigeon Forge.

Dickson also was charged with two counts of aggravated assaulted, stemming from Sunday’s shootings.

Davis was taken into custody later in the day by McCarter and Cubberley in Jefferson County.

Both are being held without bond in the Sevier County Jail pending arraignment.

Both shooting victims, Christopher S. Lyons, 24, who is a resident of the home where the shooting occurred, and his visitor, Rodney W. Hardin, 31, are still hospitalized at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Hardin is in critical condition.

McCarter said robbery was not a motive in the 10:12 p.m. attack. He said it appeared to be some sort of revenge against the victims, who are acquainted with their attackers.

The two were shot with a semiautomatic pistol.

A third man, Anthony Lyons, who also lives at the residence, was beaten with fists and a stick, McCarter said.

RALEIGH — At approximately 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Raleigh Police Department officers responded to a report of a deceased person in the 4200-block of Bland Road.

When they arrived they found the body of Felipe Montavo-Montavo in an outside area.

The circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation, but eyewitness tell police several people drinking led to the man’s death.

Four men: Hector Rodriguez, Arturo Gonzalez, Juan Moyeda-Aleman and Miguel Mayo have all been arrested and charged with Montavo-Montavo’s murder.

Moyeda-Alman and Rodriguez are both 16.

Police have not released a movtive in his murder.

‘Random’ murder marks first for Seminole County in 2008

A Sanford mother of two was stabbed to death Sunday in what police called “a senseless, random act of violence” by a stranger who said he was “angry.”

It was the first homicide of 2008 in Seminole County.

Charlene McIntosh Amrhein, 46, was smoking about 7:50 a.m. outside her unit at the Charleston Club apartments when Solim Kolassiba, 20, who lives about two miles away with his parents, stabbed her in the abdomen with a large kitchen knife, Sanford police spokeswoman Cleo Cohen said.

Amrhein was pronounced dead a short time later at Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford.

Witnesses saw Kolassiba running down Lake Mary Boulevard near Amrhein’s complex with blood on his clothes, Cohen said, and investigators stopped and questioned him.

He confessed to stabbing Amrhein, who he said he did not know, and told investigators he was “mad and angry,” Cohen said. She said she did not know why he was angry or at whom. Kolassiba apparently walked from his home to Amrhein’s, police said.

He saw her in the corridor and I guess his anger was taken out on her,” Cohen said. “There’s no logic to it.”

Amrhein’s 14-year-old son and husband were in the apartment when the killing happened. She also had a 23-year-old daughter who does not live at home.

Police said Kolassiba graduated from Lake Mary High School in 2005 and is from the African nation of Togo. He was being held without bail late Sunday at the Seminole County Jail.

A woman in Sanford who stepped out of her apartment to smoke a cigarette was stabbed to death by a man who was angry and searching for someone to randomly attack, according to police.

Investigators said Charlene McIntosh Amrhein was outside of her home over the weekend at the Charleston Club Apartments, located off Lake Mary Boulevard in Sanford, when she was attacked and killed.

A short time later, Solim Kolassiba was taken into custody. Kolassiba had blood on his shirt and officers found a large kitchen knife nearby, according to officers.

Police said Kolassiba told them he stabbed Amrhein because he was angry and wanted to lash out at the first person he came across, Local 6 reported.

“It is a tragic situation that when you are at your home and basically, she was, and you come outside your front door and you are attacked,” Sanford police representative Cleo Cohen said.

Kolassiba lived with his mother in an apartment near the victim’s home.

Police said they do not know why Kolassiba was angry.

Kolassiba was charged with first-degree murder, Local 6 reported.
