Woman delivers baby while hanging from tree

A pregnant Papua New Guinea woman hung from a tree after being accused of sorcery gave birth to her baby while struggling to free herself, local media reports.

Nolan Yekum and her husband Paul were dragged from their house and hung from a tree by fellow tribesmen who accused them of sorcery after the couple’s neighbour suddenly died.

Their ordeal occurred in Kilip village near Banz in Western Highlands Province, PNG’s newspaper The National reported today.

The woman and her newborn baby girl, her third child, were doing well in Mt Hagen Hospital after two weeks in hiding, the report said.

Her husband said men entered their house in the middle of the night with a rope and tied it to their necks, accusing them of sorcery over their neighbour’s death.

They were dragged outside and hung from a tree, he said.

“We managed to loosen the noose to get our feet on the ground … we were able to free ourselves.

“My wife, who was about seven months pregnant, delivered the baby while struggling to free herself.

“It was a painful experience for me and her,” Yekum said.

He said he pleaded with fellow villagers to wait for his neighbour’s post-mortem and he accused local police of failing to act.

The couple vehemently denied practising sorcery.

A man dubbed “the spitter” was on trial Wednesday in Daytona Beach for attacking deputies with his own human waste.

Walter Barett was masked and shackled in the court room Wednesday where he actually testified in his own defense.

He said he didn’t do it, then he said he did it, then he said voices told him to do it. It was the cap to a bizarre recounting of events that actually left one deputy sick after the incident.

Barett was wearing a mask in court because in the past he has spit on people during court appearances. The offense he was on trial for, though, happened in late August. Barett was at the courthouse for a hearing related to a violent home invasion.

Prosecutors showed security camera video of what happened next when deputies got to his holding cell and found he had drawn pictures on the wall with his own human waste. Then deputies testified Barret threw the waste at them.

Barett allegedly hit one deputy a couple of times and it ended up causing an infection.

“He went into a swinging motion, essentially like a ballplayer would be throwing a baseball at a World Series game,” said Deputy Pete Taraborelli of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

There was little Barett’s attorney could do Wednesday afternoon. The jury was expected to get the case Wednesday and, if found guilty, Barett could face another 10 years added on to the life sentence he is already serving.

South Africa’s tougher laws on rape to go into effect
CAPE TOWN – After a protracted delay, tough new laws against sexual abuse will finally enter force Sunday in South Africa, which is often called the “rape capital” of the world.

The Justice Ministry said Friday that the Sexual Offenses Amendment Act would help the country “fight the scourge of sexual offenses head-on” and would at last give greater protection to victims of sexual crimes.

For the first time, victims will be able to go to court to force their attackers to take AIDS tests. An estimated 5.4 million South Africans are infected with HIV - the highest number of any country in the world.

More than 50,000 rape cases were reported last year, almost 150 per day. Based on reported cases alone, South Africa has 114 rapes per 100,000 people, compared with a rate of 32 rapes per 100,000 in the United States, according to police figures. Women’s rights groups estimate that only one in nine rapes is reported to police.

The definition of rape was until now narrow and outdated. Attacks on children, for instance, were often classified as indecent assault, not rape - even though the young are often targeted because of the mistaken belief that sex with a child can rid the body of the HIV virus.

The new law says that sexual penetration by objects other than a penis would be classed as rape - which usually is punished with a life sentence - rather than sexual assault, for which there are lesser sentences. For the first time, male-on-male sexual assault is classed as rape.

The new law introduces tougher measures to protect children and the mentally disabled from sexual exploitation and child pornography. It would also set up a register of sexual offenders so that schools and other institutions dealing with children could vet candidates for jobs.

The bill was approved by parliament before it went into recess last month after being held up for more than a year because of technical legal problems over the clauses about compulsory HIV tests for sexual offenders.

The revised legislation said all victims should be entitled to apply for a court order to compel the alleged sex offender to take an AIDS test, and should get free medication immediately after the rape to reduce the risks of contracting the virus. Given the delay in HIV infection showing up in tests, many women currently face weeks of agonized uncertainty over whether their attacker carried the deadly virus.

The provisions on AIDS testing will take effect in March because of the legal complexities involved, the Justice Ministry said.

Rape is a sickening and despicable act - It’s only logical a nation overflowing with sickening and despicable creatures would hold the title of such depravity. LONDON — An outbreak in Europe of an obscure disease from Africa is raising concerns that globalization and climate change are combining to pose a health threat to the West.

Nearly 300 cases of chikungunya fever, a virus that previously has been common only in Africa and Asia, were reported in Italy — where only isolated cases of the disease had been seen in the past.

“We were quite surprised,” said Stefania Salmaso, director of Italy’s Center for Epidemiology at the National Health Institute. “Nobody was expecting that such an unusual event was going to happen.”

While the outbreak was largely the result of stronger trade and travel ties, some experts believe it is a sign of how global warming is creating new breeding grounds for diseases long confined to subtropical climates.

Officials at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said the particularly mild winter in Italy allowed mosquitoes to start breeding earlier than usual, giving the insect population a boost.

“This outbreak is most important as a warning signal,” said Diarmid Campbell-Lendrum, a climate change expert at the World Health Organization. “Climate change affects the breeding of every mosquito on earth.”

More mosquitoes will mean more disease. With warmer temperatures in the future, Europe and North America might be hit by outbreaks of diseases usually confined to southern continents.

“With more movement of people and a changing climate, there will be shifting patterns of disease,” Campbell-Lendrum said. “We need to be prepared for more surprises like this in the future.”

Italian officials first grew suspicious in July, when dozens of people in the country’s northeast complained of fevers, joint pain, headaches and rashes. Local doctors thought they had been bitten by sandflies, but lab tests confirmed chikungunya fever, a disease spread by mosquitoes.

Officials believe the virus arrived when a tourist from India brought the virus to the Italian province of Ravenna. The Asian tiger mosquito, which can spread the disease, had reached Italy nearly two decades earlier.

Experts are also nervous because the Asian tiger mosquito might be capable of spreading more dangerous diseases like dengue fever and yellow fever.

Soldier Pleads Guilty to Passing HIV Infection

A soldier pleaded guilty Thursday during a court-martial to knowingly infecting a 17-year-old boy with HIV.

Pfc. Johnny Lamar Dalton, 25, a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated assault by means likely to cause grievous bodily harm or death and one count each of committing an indecent act, violating an order from an Army officer to inform sexual partners of his HIV and using marijuana.

Military judge Col. Patrick Parrish sentenced Dalton to 40 months in military prison, a reduction in rank to private and a dishonorable discharge. The prosecution had requested six years in confinement in addition to the discharge.

Dalton broke down in tears during the hearing, apologizing to his wife and his 4-year-old daughter for his actions.

“Of everyone I let down, I let her down the most,” he said of his daughter. “I would just like to tell her I’m sorry.”

Dalton joined the Army three years ago and learned he was infected with HIV in June 2006. His illness barred him from deploying, but he was able to stay in the Army as long as he could perform his job.

Last November, he was ordered not to have sex without first telling his wife or other potential partners of his HIV infection, and he signed an order to that effect, authorities said.

The mother of the unidentified boy, who is now 18, said her son first met Dalton in a gay online chatroom and then in person.

Doctors conducting routine blood tests in February found that the teen was HIV-positive.

“When someone basically shortens your life, whether it’s your’s or your child’s, you feel cheated,” the teen’s mother said in July.

Dalton was arrested in July after a five-month investigation by Fort Bragg military police and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. He has been confined at Camp Lejeune since his arrest.

Aside from an enormous flood of lies from every government agency, we have now something far, far more serious to deal with than a nut President.

This is a super critical health problem now gathering steam in America. It is so serious that the media has been ordered, not asked, to keep as much of a lid on it as possible. This is not like the 9-11 coverups which have reached monumental proportions and which are causing a great public outcry.

What we have is a massive and growing outbreak of a deadly, totally drug-resistant bacteria called MRSA. As of the end of September, 2007, nearly 125,000 Americans have died from this and at least another 200,000 seriously damaged by the infections. None of these figures, which we get in from federal health people but are considered to be too sensitive to even discuss in public, are being published.

Since it is impossible to completely sweep these under the rug, like the 25,000 real dead in Iraq, the press is being told to mention this as little as possible and when they do, to minimize the reality of a burgeoning 1918-type flu epidemic.

Here are some facts, straight from Georgia: MRSA is a deadly bacteria found in all American medical facilities such as hospitals, clinics and nursing homes. It real name is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus,

Currently, the death rate is about 85% and there is currently no, repeat no, known cure for it. The disease is very easily spread in medical facilities, even by touching an infected person. This disease attacks the immune system and the internal organs, causing a protracted and terrible death. Since infected persons exhibit no symptoms prior to the outbreak of the disease and are considered “highly infectious” according to the high-level reports, there is no way to quarantine people, no prophylaxis for the exposed, no vaccine for those who some into contact with an infected carrier. In addition, at least 350 doctors and about 1500 medical personnel like nurses and attendants have sickened and died.

This disease, for which there is no cure, is now increasing geometrically in the population. It has already killed more than AIDS, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s combined, and shows no sign of tapering off. On the contrary, federal health authorities now predict that at least 20,000,000 people could “expectedly sicken and die of MRSA” within a two year period (at the least.)

What can be done?

Nothing.

Be sure you have a will in place and don’t worry about your family getting your insurance. Another aspect of this is that the major insurance companies will not pay out a dime if someone dies of MRSA. They have firms of lawyers who will see to that and since the insurance industry is so supportive of the Republicans, nothing will happen.

There well could be so many dead that mass cremations will have to take place to prevent the spread of the infection. I wish I had something less deadly to report but I can’t pick and choose.

For the second time this year, the federal government has failed to stop a man infected with a dangerous strain of tuberculosis from traveling to and within the U.S.

U.S. officials this spring were unable to catch a Mexican man infected with the disease because the doctor treating the man did not know his real name, according to an official who was briefed on the incident but requested anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss it publicly.

The Mexican national traveled to the United States 76 times in the past year, even though Mexican and U.S. authorities knew he was infected with a contagious strain of tuberculosis. However, the Mexican clinic that had been treating the man, which is affiliated with the Texas Health department, unknowingly provided a fake name to U.S. authorities, the official said. The Washington Times first reported the episode in Thursday’s editions.

The man crossed the U.S. border 21 times between April 16 and May 31. However, the man used his real name and real travel documents when traveling, according to Customs and Border Protection spokesman Michael Friel. The Centers for Disease Control would not provide the man’s real or fake names for privacy reasons.

Customs officials sent out a nationwide alert to look for this man on April 16, but officials were not able to catch him, because the alert was for the man’s fake name, Friel said.

On April 17, when Customs officials had not had any luck finding the man, they suspected they had the wrong information and alerted health officials. On May 31, the Mexican man revealed his real identity to his doctor in Mexico, according to the official.

During the same time period, U.S. officials were dealing with another man infected with tuberculosis, who also was able to travel, despite warnings.

In May an Atlanta lawyer, Andrew Speaker, was able to fly from Atlanta to Europe for his wedding and honeymoon, despite warnings from public health officials. Once he was in Europe, the CDC determined that Speaker could not be transported back to the United States because the agency did not have the equipment to safely do so for a flight longer than eight hours.

The CDC asked TSA at the time to place Speaker on its “no-fly” list so he could not re-enter the country. But there was a four-hour delay between the request and the listing. Speaker got back into the U.S. through Canada, despite instructions to Customs and Border Patrol officers not to allow him in. The 18-year veteran inspector who ignored the warning has retired.

The Mexican man had been infected with tuberculosis for five years, but was being treated under a different name, according to the official who requested anonymity. Homeland Security officials have confirmed that the man is currently living in his home in Juarez, Mexico.

MIAMI The South Beach club promoter arrested for allegedly having unprotected sex with a woman and not telling her he was HIV positive had bond set at $100,000, because prosecutors believe he is a threat to public safety.

Prosecutors believe Elidor Kersaint was planning to have sex with more unknowing women, despite his arrest. Documents obtained by CBS4 News shows how they asked the judge to increase his bond. However, Kersaint had already posted a lower bond and bailed out of jail when the increase went into effect. Weeks later officers tracked him down and rearrested him.

Miami Beach police are asking that women who had unprotected sex with him to come forward; 22-year old Kersaint is HIV positive and is accused of knowingly spreading the disease to his sex partners.

Wednesday night CBS4 News spoke to some of his colleagues, who didn’t want to talk on camera. They say Kersaint has been living with HIV all his life; his mother passed it on to him. However, they say they didn’t find out about his status until the days leading up to his arrest.
