Hidden Cam Shows Woman Repeatedly Slapping Helpless Handicapped Man

A 56-year-old Central Florida woman was arrested after a hidden surveillance camera videotaped her repeatedly slapping and hitting a mentally handicapped man.

Vincent Dimartino said he put three hidden surveillance cameras in his Port Orange home after he suspected that his 17-year-old son wasn’t being taken care of properly by caregiver Rabha Assal Merlino.

When Merlino would come to care for Dimartino’s son, she would bring the 42-year-old victim who has Down’s Syndrome and suffers from diminished mental capacity, according to a police report.

Dimartino said the first tape he checked showed the woman delivering repeated blows to a man’s head and face.

The sound of the strikes to the head and face can be heard on the tape.

“There is no doubt that that individual was helpless and could not defend himself,” Port Orange police Capt. Frank Surmaczewicz said. “It is probably one of the worst incidents that we have seen.”

“It is still too hard to watch,” Dimartino said. “I feel angry and betrayed. She always swore how much she loved Vincent. In my head, I still hear the slapping,” Dimartino said.

Marlino spent up to 20 hours a week at the alleged victim’s home to provide caregiver services for the last four years.

Police said there are six other videos in police possession allegedly showing the woman stealing food and items, Local 6′s Adam Longo said.

Polk dad charged in baby’s death – Officials said the man told them he beat his daughter because he had wanted a son.

Marcos Gomez-Romero told sheriff’s detectives he wanted a son.

Every time he looked at his baby girl, Gomez-Romero said he grew annoyed and angry because she was not the boy he had hoped for.

Gomez-Romero told detectives that abusing his daughter, Ariana Lizeth Rodriguez-Romero, became such a “habit” that he slapped her while she slept.

On Thursday, a Polk County grand jury indicted Gomez-Romero, 28, on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse for Ariana’s death.

A medical examiner found dozens of internal and external injuries on Ariana’s body. The infant had five new fractures on her ribs and more than a dozen old fractures. There was a hematoma and a cut on her spleen. Her liver was bruised, as was her jaw.

When questioned by a Polk County sheriff’s detective the day after Ariana died, Gomez-Romero said he was angry when his daughter was born because he wanted a son, reports said.

Gomez-Romero, who lives in Winter Haven, told a detective he called his daughter an “ugly girl, a prostitute and deny [sic] she was his daughter,” a Sheriff’s Office report said.

Gomez-Romero said he picked Ariana up by her hands to carry her. He said he spanked her several times out of anger because she would not stop crying.

When a detective asked Gomez-Romero what a 4-month-old could do to warrant such severe punishment, the report said he stated, “Nothing.”

“Gomez-Romero made it clear that his anger and hostility towards his daughter was due to the fact that she was a girl and he had wanted a son,” the sheriff’s report said.

Sheriff’s detectives also interviewed Ariana’s mother, Juana Rodriguez-Perez, who said Gomez-Romero would carry Ariana by her hands into the bedroom and close the door.

Shortly after, the report said, their daughter would begin to cry.

Rodriguez-Perez told the detective when she threatened to call the police on Ariana’s father, he would threaten to leave with their 2-year-old son.

Gomez-Romero is being held at the Polk County Jail.

State Attorney’s Office spokesman Chip Thullbery on Friday said that although the infant’s mother has not been arrested, “the possibility of charging her has not been foreclosed at this moment.”

Police said a mother found a man covered in baby oil exposing himself outside a church day care near East 25th Street and Paseo Boulevard.

Larry Booker, 53, of Kansas City, was charged with sexual misconduct Tuesday night.

On Monday morning, a parent said she had just dropped her child off at the church day care. The mother said that as she made a left turn onto East 26th Street and Vine Boulevard, she saw a man standing near a Ford Bronco.

The woman said the man was wearing a short robe with no pants. She said he was exposing himself.

The woman told police the man had been doing this to parents as they drop their children off at Paseo Baptist since mid-December.

Police said that when they stopped Larry Booker in the Ford Bronco, he was wearing pajama bottoms under a robe and was covered in baby oil from head to toe.

Pastor Charles Briscoe of the Paseo Baptist Church said, “He needs some help, but he needs to be restrained so that this doesn’t happen again.”

Booker denies that he exposed himself. He told police he was working on his car and his clothes got soiled, so he changed into the robe and pajamas.

Booker was convicted of lewd and lascivious behavior in Johnson County in 2006 and sentenced to six months in jail.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A man said he will file a lawsuit against a south Florida bar after he was asked to leave because of his gold teeth.

The dress code at a bar in West Palm Beach bans the dental gold-plated covers also known as “grills.”

Shawn Anderson said he told the manager he wouldn’t remove his permanently installed gold teeth. He said the rule is discriminatory because many black people have the fixtures.

Owner John Webb said he doesn’t want people making a statement with their dress when they come in.

Anderson said he plans to file his lawsuit in the next few weeks.

Cops: Man cooked parts of slain woman

TYLER, Texas — A man killed his girlfriend, then filleted and cooked parts of her body before calling police to tell them what he was doing, authorities said Sunday.

Christopher Lee McCuin, 25, called 911 on Saturday and told an emergency dispatcher he had killed Jana Shearer, 21, and was boiling her body parts at his mother’s home, said Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith.

When authorities arrived at the home, they found Shearer’s mutilated body, one ear boiling in a pot of water on the stove and a fork sticking out of some human flesh sitting on a plate on the kitchen table.

Authorities said it was unclear whether McCuin consumed any part of Shearer’s body.

“We cannot prove that he did,” Smith told The Associated Press. “He was either going to, had been or led us to think that he was doing it.”

Authorities believe Shearer, 21, was abducted from her home Friday night and killed. Her death and mutilation was apparently the beginning of a crime spree that also included McCuin allegedly stabbing the boyfriend of his estranged wife and breaking into a business. The stabbing victim is in critical condition at an area hospital, officials said.

McCuin, of Tyler, about 110 miles east of Dallas, was charged with capital murder. He was being held in the Smith County Jail on a $2 million bond Sunday and did not have an attorney, officials said. He was scheduled to be arraigned Monday, Smith said.

Before he called 911, McCuin told his mother and her boyfriend to look in their garage, authorities said. There the couple saw the remains of Shearer. McCuin’s mother and her boyfriend fled the home and flagged down a police officer. McCuin dialed authorities after they left.

A man who answered the door Sunday night where the body was found declined to comment.

Shearer appeared to have died from blunt trauma to her head, Smith said. She may have been kidnapped Friday night, when her mother witnessed her get into McCuin’s truck.

“There was no struggle but she could see the girl left with no shoes, no purse and no cell phone,” Smith said.

McCuin then drove to his estranged wife’s home, where he stabbed William Veasley, 42, Smith said. McCuin was still in that home when deputies arrived, but escaped in his car after a short chase, Smith said.

“We thought it was a disturbance or an assault,” Smith said.

McCuin wasn’t seen again until Saturday morning, when he arrived at his mother’s home and called her into the garage so she could “come see what he had done,” Smith said.

When sheriff deputies arrived, McCuin barricaded himself in the home for a short time before coming out. After he emerged, officers entered and found Shearer’s body, Sgt. Gary Middleton said.

Detectives were trying to determine where the slaying happened. They think McCuin drove to his mother’s home with the dead woman in the back seat of his extended-cab pickup, Smith said.

DENVER (CBS4) ― A father and son accused of sexually assaulting a pizza delivery woman were formally charged Thursday.

Daniel and Lawrence Garcia are accused of attacking a pizza delivery person on New Year’s Eve.

She was on her way back to her car in the 4600 block of Race Street when police say they went after her.

The woman eventually broke free and called for help.

Both men were expected in court on Monday.

Rafaela Mendz was arrested after TIA police found a blackjack in her carry-on bag.

An airport spokeswoman tells us that when police asked her what she was doing carrying the bat-like, leather covered stick through the passenger screening area, she told them it was “to smack men’s hands when they got fresh.”

Mendez was booked into the Orient Road Jail and charged with carrying a concealed weapon. The incident took place at around 4 a.m. at Airside C, no word on where Mendez was travelling to.

According to Answers.com – a blackjack is a “leather-covered bludgeon with a short, flexible shaft or strap, used as a hand weapon.”

Police were searching Friday for three men in connection with the shooting death of a Fayetteville man a week ago.

Bobby Eugene Clemmons, 23, was left at the emergency entrance to Highsmith Rainey Hospital on Dec. 19 after being shot, and he later died, police said.

Police recovered the vehicle they believe Clemmons was in when he was dropped off at the hospital. The black Kia was located near Fordham Drive.

The location where the shooting occurred hasn’t yet been determined, police said.

David William Covington, 23, of 204 Brinkley St., was arrested Thursday and charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle. He was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $210,000 secured bond.

Police were searching for the following men in the case:

Larry Donnell Everett, 23, of 1110 Clark St.; Kajuan Kenneth Toles, 24, of 827-A Orange St.; and Ricky Lavelle Martin Jr., 19, of 289 Ingram St.

Another man who was identified last week as a person of interest in the case has been questioned and released, police said.

Man accused of beating girlfriend’s son to death

A 22-year-old Reno man has been jailed on a charge he beat his live-in girlfriend’s toddler son to death, police said.

Two-year-old Kaviahn Van Buren was not breathing when officers arrived about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 700 block of West Seventh Street.

Fabien Hunt had been alone with the child since the boy’s mother left that morning for work, Lt. Robert McDonald said.

After about two hours of life saving efforts by paramedics and nurses at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, the bruised toddler was pronounced dead.

Police suspect his death is related to severe head trauma. An autopsy report was not available Wednesday.

Hunt was questioned by detectives, booked into Washoe County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder related to fatal child abuse and was held without bail.

Detectives said Hunt incriminated himself in the boy’s death.

Kaviahn was the second child killed this year in Reno, and the 21st homicide during this year. No charges have been filed in the January death of 1-month-old Ty Smith.

McDonald said a relative of the child babys-at him last week, and he was in good health. The boy’s mother also told police the boy was fine before she left for work Tuesday morning.

Residents who rent a room in the same home saw Hunt holding the child under a cold shower and shaking him in their shared bathroom, McDonald said. They called police who responded with paramedics.

Hunt had been dating the boy’s mother for about four months.

Denver woman, 61, raped, left for dead

A Denver man was charged with murder Thursday in the rape of a 61-year-old woman who was left outside on the coldest night of the season and later died.

Residents who heard Judith Pyle’s cries for help in the early-

morning hours of Dec. 9 called police, who found her behind a Dumpster in an alley at East 35th Avenue and Clayton Street.

Pyle, whose poor health hindered movement, had been beaten and was unable to pull herself off the ground, or even put on her coat and pull up her pants — her belt and one of her boots also had been removed.

She had been out in the cold for about two hours before being found, according to an arrest affidavit, and died about four hours later at Denver Health Medical Center.

Temperatures at Denver International Airport dipped to zero that day, according to the National Weather Service.

The Miramar City Commissioner turned himself in to police after pulling out a gun at a grocery store last month.

The Broward State Attorney’s Office filed a charge of aggravated assault with a firearm against Fitzroy Salesman this morning. According to reports, Salesman got into an argument and pulled out and pointed a loaded pistol at an individual in a Winn-Dixie on November 26. Salesman’s attorney said he was defending himself from an aggressor.

The charge is a third-degree felony with a maximum of five years in prison and a minimum mandatory of three years in prison.

Las Vegas police arrested a man Friday afternoon in connection with a bloody machete attack the night before that left a woman dead and her two children maimed.

Police booked Victor Cruz, 29, on murder and attempted murder charges after catching him in an apartment complex near Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street.

Investigators believe Cruz, also known as Victor Orlando Cruz-Garcia, attacked a 46-year-old woman and her two children after she told him to leave their apartment because he was drunk, homicide Lt. Lew Roberts said.

Cruz and his girlfriend shared the apartment with the family, he said.

Alex Martinez, 22, who lives in the unit above at the Cabana Park apartments near Bonanza Road and Eastern Avenue, said he was in bed when he heard the thumping sounds of a fight.

When Martinez peered out a window, he saw a woman bleeding on the ground and a bleeding girl running around the building.

Not far away, Martinez saw a man on the ground covering his head with his hands as the attacker whaled on him seven or eight times with a foot-and-a-half long machete.

The attacker didn’t say anything. He just kept hitting, Martinez said.

After taking the blows, the man on the ground grabbed his dangling arm, which was nearly severed below the elbow, and ran while the blood poured like water, Martinez said.

“It was very ugly,” he said.

Roberts said the blood trail led across the parking lot and around some cars, as if the victim were running from the machete-wielding man.

Cruz disappeared before police arrived, but investigators learned he had an acquaintance near Tropicana and Mountain Vista and flooded the area with patrol officers Friday. One of the officers spotted Cruz in an apartment complex about 1:30 p.m. and arrested him.

Meanwhile, the woman died at University Medical Center. Her 12-year-old daughter was in critical condition with severe cuts and trauma to her head and face, though she had been talking Friday, Roberts said.

The woman’s 27-year-old son was also in critical condition after doctors reattached his partially severed arm and a severed finger found at the scene, he said.

“It’s one of the worst I’ve seen,” Roberts said of the crime.

By Friday afternoon, most of the blood had been cleaned in the complex on Aster Lane, but a few dried blood patches on the light gray gravel served as reminders of the attack.

A handful of children on their way home from Lunt Elementary stopped to gawk at the stained concrete outside the apartment with Bill Richardson campaign stickers on the window.

In the window next door, someone had hanged Christmas lights and wrote the words “Feliz Navidad.”

A Columbus man convicted of raping and stabbing to death a 14-year-old girl during a burglary has been sentenced to 90 years in prison.

Demetrick Shepherd, 20, told a Bartholomew Superior Court judge during Friday’s hearing that he plans to appeal his conviction.

A jury convicted him Nov. 1 of murder, rape and burglary in the slaying of Chelsea Porter.

Porter, who attended Central Middle School, was found dead June 29 in an apartment of a family friend in the city about 40 miles south of Indianapolis.

Authorities said Shepherd entered the apartment where she was sleeping to steal some car keys when she awoke and he attacked her, stabbing her 11 times with a butcher knife.

Porter’s father, Raymond Porter, said after Friday’s hearing that he was content with Shepherd’s sentence, but hopes Shepherd’s planned appeal won’t shorten his sentence.

“It still isn’t going to bring my daughter back,” he said, adding, “We’ve still got a lot of grieving to do. It’s going to be hard with Christmas coming up.”

Porter’s family and Bartholomew Superior Court Judge Chris Monroe said Shepherd showed no remorse for killing Porter. They noted that he slouched in his chair throughout the trial and sentencing and seemed uninterested.

“It appears that you are unmoved by what has happened,” Monroe said. “Bottom-line, it sounds like you just don’t care about anyone.”

(Memphis 12/6/2007) Two Shelby County men, a father and his son, are wanted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Both men were added to the 10 most wanted list by the TBI Thursday. Winfred Scott and Akeem-Abou Scott are wanted for raping a girl repeatedly over a 5-year period, according to a news release from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Kristen Helm is with the TBI, “They’ve been on the lamb for a while. The TBI hopes by adding them to the most wanted list, iIt will re-energize the case. They’re hoping now that their pictures are out there, someone will recognize the father and son and turn them in leading to the arrest and in this case. It would be one thousand for each of them.”

The crimes were committed between 1999 and 2004 and began when the victim was 5.

The men are subject to arrest for rape of a child, a felony.

Winfred Scott, 47, is approximately 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighs 300 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Akeem-Abou Scott, 24, is also a black male with black hair and brown eyes. He is 6 feet tall and weighs about 250 pounds.

Why Did the Wheels Come off Hillary’s Campaign?

In the abstract, Hillary is a captivating idea. The first woman to run for president, she is the living reminder of the better economic times and international peace of the Clinton administration. But, up close and personal, she is far less attractive. As the rest of the country is exposed to the former first lady, if they emulate the voters in Iowa and New Hampshire and revise their opinion of her, the results will not please the Clinton camp.

I guess to know her is to feel nauseaus. That’s not all. From a purely practical political standpoint, Morris doesn’t think Hillary’s campaign machine is up to the task:

The conclusion is obvious: neither Hillary nor her staff know how to campaign. After the Clinton re-election in 1996, they have never been tested in a competitive race. When Giuliani dropped out of the New York State Senate race and the young Congressman Rick Lazio had to enter at the last minute to try to stop Hillary’s bid, the conclusion was pre-ordained. Hillary’s re-election was a cakewalk against a totally under funded opponent. She doesn’t know how to win.

Hillary’s experience has been limited to the insider back biting of Washington where she is an expert at using her secret police — a small army of private detectives — to unearth negatives about her or Bill’s opponents. (Even former U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young recently admitted that Hillary ran the effort to discredit women who might come forward and accuse Clinton of misconduct.) Baseline Killer Suspect Gets 438 Years

PHOENIX (AP) — A man accused of being the Phoenix Baseline Killer was sentenced to 438 years in prison Friday for a brutal attack in which he raped a woman while pointing a pistol at her pregnant sister’s belly.

“It is clear from the record that you cannot function in a civilized society,” Superior Court Judge Andrew Klein told Mark Goudeau, who still faces trial for the slayings of eight women and a man in 2005-2006.

The 43-year-old former construction worker was convicted in September of 19 counts, including sexual assault and kidnapping, for assaulting the sisters in 2005 as they walked home from a park.

The sisters told the jury how Goudeau forced them into the bushes near a road and told them to strip, then raped the younger victim while pointing the gun at the other.

“My daughter was in danger before she was even born,” said the woman who had been pregnant when the attack occurred. Speaking through an interpreter, she said she still wakes up crying sometimes.

“I will hope for him to never get out,” she said.

DNA evidence linked Goudeau to the rape, but he maintained that he was innocent.

“What happened to those two girls was indeed horrible,” he told the judge, “but I had nothing to do with it.”

“This is just another freak show of a hearing where they convicted an innocent man,” Goudeau’s wife, Wendy Carr, said outside the courthouse.

Klein said before handing down the sentence that Goudeau must have two “diametrically opposed” personalities, one calm and respectful in court and the other sociopathic and brutal.

Maricopa County Prosecutors had said earlier that Goudeau faced a maximum of 285 years in prison. But Deputy County Attorney Suzanne Cohen proved a prior violent record in court Friday that made him eligible for the higher sentences.

Goudeau still faces trial on 74 other criminal charges, including nine murder counts, from a crime spree police have attributed to the Baseline Killer, named for the south Phoenix street where many of the early attacks took place. He has pleaded not guilty.

If Goudeau is convicted of murder, County Attorney Andrew Thomas has said he will pursue the death penalty.

Four members of Manatee County’s Brown Pride Locos gang were sentenced to prison today on criminal racketeering charges.

In September, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office arrested several men they believed to be members of the gang.

Attorney General Bill McCollum’s office says the four members that received their sentencing today were convicted of Criminal Racketeering and Conspiracy to Commit Racketeering.

The men sentenced include 25-year-old Justino Santana, 22-year-old Fernando Chavez, 21-year-old Jose Luis Rodriguez and 25-year-old Pedro Garcia. Their prison terms range from 71 months to 4 years.

A man accused of killing seven women and convicted of one murder was sent to Florida’s death row on Thursday.

Paul Durousseau was convicted in June of the rape and slaying of 24-year-old Tyresa Mack in 1999. The same jury voted 10-2 to recommend the death penalty.

Durousseau’s attorneys argued that his life should be spared because he suffers from brain damage and other mental illnesses that impaired his behavior. But prosecutors said Durousseau was well aware of what he did when he killed the woman and deserved the death penalty.

On Thursday, Judge Jack Schemer formally sentenced Durousseau to death by lethal injection.

“This was a consciously hideous crime,” Schemer said from the bench. “Durousseau is manipulative, devious and crafty.”

Schemer said the brutality of the slaying was among the reasons why he agreed with the jury’s recommendation that Durousseau should die.

Durousseau was arrested in 2003 and is charged in the deaths of Mack and five other women in Duval County. He is also accused of killing a woman in Columbus, Ga., while he was in the Army and stationed at Fort Benning stationed in 1997.

Mack’s family said it has waited eight years to hear their loved one’s killer would die for his crime.

“Thank God it’s all over with. We have a closure. Me and my family, we have been through a lot, including her kids. Thank God it’s finally over with,” said Mack’s sister Latashia Bell, who continues to raise Mack’s three children.

Last month, the State Attorney’s Office dropped the other five murder charges against Durousseau.

Prosecutors were concerned that an acquittal in one of the remaining Jacksonville cases would jeopardize the conviction in the Mack case. Additionally, prosecutors worried an overturned conviction in the Mack case could present problems for the remaining cases.

Durousseau is expected to stand trial in the Georgia slaying. Tracy Habersham’s nude body was found Sept. 7, 1997, two days after a party at a club on base. Police said they believe she was strangled shortly after the party.

The 15-acre estate that served as Michael Vick’s dogfighting headquarters failed to sell at auction Saturday.

The owner of the property in rural southeastern Virginia, real estate developer Wilbur Ray Todd Jr., rejected a final bid of $747,000, the assessed value of the property at 1915 Moonlight Road. The bidder was anonymous. There were only two bidders and the opening bid was $345,000.

“I didn’t see the people in the crowd I thought we needed,” a disappointed Todd said after the auction held inside the house. He said he will list the property for sale.

Todd said it would cost about $1 million to build a similar house on 15 acres.

Vick, the suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback, is serving a 23-month sentence for a dogfighting conspiracy. Vick and three co-defendants raised pit bulls and trained them for fighting in the rugged wooded area behind a 4,600-square-foot white brick house.

Vick paid about $34,000 for the tract in 2002 and had the house built. Behind the house and a full-size basketball court, partly obscured by a fence, are four outbuildings and dozens of dog cages.

According to court papers, some of the dogfights were held on the second floor of one of the outbuildings. There are other remnants of Vick’s “Bad Newz Kennels” dogfighting enterprise, including a metal pole and chain that was used to restrain pit bulls.

Hundreds of people — most of them just curious — toured the property during three open houses over the past week.

Vick sold the property for $450,000 to Todd, who spent an additional $50,000 fixing up the place, which had been trashed by burglars and looters.

“By the time you pay a commission and taxes, it gets eaten up real quick,” Todd said to explain why the nearly $250,000 he would have made from auction’s final bid was not enough.

The house has two master suites and a media room with wet bar. A double-sided gas fireplace separates the bathroom from the bedroom in the upstairs master suite.

Other amenities include jetted tubs, freshly refinished hardwood floors, a two-car garage and an expansive kitchen with center island, granite countertops and built-in stainless steel appliances.

The women were flown from the Nationwide Insurance office in Lake Wales to Orlando Regional Medical Center’s burn center.

Leon Davis Jr., whose 30th birthday is Friday, walked into the Nationwide Insurance office shortly after 3:30 p.m. and demanded money from two female employees, Police Chief Herbert Gillis said. Davis was not satisfied with the amount of money he was given, threw gasoline on the women and set them on fire.

Davis then allegedly shot Brandon Griessman, 33, in the nose after he tried to help the women. The suspect fled leading authorities on a manhunt until he turned himself in at a Polk County Sheriff’s Office substation about 7:00pm.

Yvonne Bustamonte, 26, Jane Luciono, 23, who was six-months pregnant, were flown to Orlando hospitals in critical condition, Gillis said.

Luciono underwent an emergency Caesarean section delivery, Gillis told the newspaper. The condition of the baby was not immediately known.

“I’ve worked in this business for thirteen years and not seen or heard of anything like this in my career here,” Capt. Troy Schulze said. “I’ve never seen anything come close to this, violence-wise. It was heartless, absolutely heartless, for someone to do something like this.”

Scott Headley, the owner of the Nationwide office, said Bustamonte has worked for him for nine years, and Luciono has worked for him for two years.

“I can’t imagine someone can do something so cruel,” Headley said.

Griessman was expected to undergo corrective surgery.

Davis, an Eagle Lake city employee, was suspended from his job after a Nov. 30 arrest on larceny charges, police said. It was not known what he did for the city. Davis had been on probation a July 6 grand theft conviction, according to the Florida Department of Corrections Web site.

The women were listed in critical condition Friday afternoon, while the shooting victim is expected to be okay. Eyewitness News tried to talk to some of the family members at the ORMC burn center Friday, but they didn’t want to go on camera.

Davis was charged with three counts of attempted murder and arson. He was arrested five times this year, mostly for grand theft charges. He was released from jail on December 3.

Leon Davis Jr. – already in jail on charges related to theburning of two women in Lake Wales — has been identified as the suspect in the double homicide at a BP station along Interstate 4.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said late this morning that investigators have matched bullets from a gun that was used in the shooting deaths at the BP station to bullets found at the scene of the Lake Wales’ attack.

Judd also said Davis was linked the killings by his vehicle and comments he made to people later – such as saying that the victims were shot because they did not hand over money.

Pravinkumar Chimanbha Patel, 33, and Dashrath Patel, 52, were shot to death Dec. 7 while they were changing the gas station’s outdoor sign after the store closed about 9 p.m.

Former highway patrol officer accused of sexual battery

RALEIGH — A North Carolina Highway Patrol officer, who is accused of making sexual advances towards women he pulled over while on patrol, turned himself in to face the charges.

Stripped of his badge, his gun and his highway patrol car, a plain-clothed Michael Steele, Jr. walked into the Orange County Courthouse Friday.

Steele’s attorney spoke briefly to Eyewitness News.

“This is simply a first appearance, and we’re here to cooperate with the authorities,” Attorney Clay Plunkett said. “We understand there are some warrants. He’s here to turn himself in.”

The 28-year-old former officer faced a judge in handcuffs. Prosecutors say on three occasions in August, Steele pulled over women he believed were Hispanic immigrants.

He is accused of ordering the women out of their cars and driving them around Orange County. During the drive, authorities say he made sexual advances toward them.

“We thought this was a situation that was serious enough it warranted moving it directly to superior court,” Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said. “And we did it with sealed indictments because we wanted to get the defendant under arrest as soon as we could.”

As Steele’s wife and his father looked on, the prosecution read the list of charges. The charges include kidnapping, sexual battery, assault on a female and extortion.

Prosecutors say Steele even threatened to kill the family of one of his victims if she didn’t call him on a later date. Steele was a highway patrol officer for nearly four years and resigned from the force in September.

His bail is set at $250,000. The judge ordered him to have no contact with the victims.

Retired investigator claims a nigger serial killer may not be a serial killer after all – serial killers have “complex psychological motives” he claims.’ And this one celled feeble brained dense and dumb nigger wouldn’t know a complex motive if it reached up and kicked him in the ass. This nigger, while they’ve already made an excuse for him, is the core definition of “serial killer.” The only real “complexity” that serial killers possess is one of necessity, in order to be considered as a serial killer, one must possess such intelligence that they are capable of getting away with their crimes – at least three times anyway. Of course this would eliminate most bird-brained niggers because most of them are simply too stupid to get away with numerous crimes. This is the first time I’ve ever heard that a serial killer has to have “complexity, emotional issues or even motives.” While those traits may be common, a serial killer is defined solely on the number of victims, not on his mental state or how complex he (or she) is. I wonder what ‘out’ they will come up with for the nigger serial rapists, perhaps niggers who rape three or more individuals on three or more separate incidences can’t be serial rapist because they are too simple and stupid and lack the internal fortitude or stimulus to the minimum degree required to have complex emotions or motivations? But darn, we already knew that, we don’t need subcategories for nigger serial killers, we don’t need excuses, we don’t need the BS of “oh, he’s  just a robber who slaughtered five individuals but he’s not a serial killer because it was just money or valuables he was after.“ It doesn’t matter, classify by what he is, a serial killer. If a nigger murders three or more individuals on three or more separate occasions, no matter what bull they come up with, that nigger is a serial killer – hang him and be done with it. That’s not so complex is it? Well, at least that’s about the simplest thing I can come up with anyway.

Some criminologists who believe serial killers are motivated by psychological reasons aren’t sure that the Wake County man accused of killing five people fits the classic definition of a serial killer.

Samuel Cooper, Jr. faces five murder charges for crimes across Wake, stretching back to May of last year.

“A serial killer, by the FBI’s definition, is somebody who kills three or more people with a cooling off period in between,” explained Chris Morgan, a retired investigator with the Raleigh Police Department.

He said Cooper might fit that definition, but “”if you look at Mr. Cooper’s crimes, the ones that I’m aware of anyhow, they all appear to be robbery of one type or another.”

“And because of that, I don’t know if he would fit the classical definition of a serial killer or not,” Morgan said.

Morgan believes serial killers are driven by complex psychological motives. And he’s not sure that’s the case with Cooper.

“The classic understanding that law enforcement works with on a serial killer is that they have some psychological motivation; something within them is driving them to kill specific victims,” Morgan explained.

Maurice Godwin is a former police officer who has written books about serial killers. He said Cooper “is really a serial robber.”

“Murder wasn’t the focus of his crimes,” Godwin said. “It was robbery.”

South Africa’s tougher laws on rape to go into effect
CAPE TOWN – After a protracted delay, tough new laws against sexual abuse will finally enter force Sunday in South Africa, which is often called the “rape capital” of the world.

The Justice Ministry said Friday that the Sexual Offenses Amendment Act would help the country “fight the scourge of sexual offenses head-on” and would at last give greater protection to victims of sexual crimes.

For the first time, victims will be able to go to court to force their attackers to take AIDS tests. An estimated 5.4 million South Africans are infected with HIV – the highest number of any country in the world.

More than 50,000 rape cases were reported last year, almost 150 per day. Based on reported cases alone, South Africa has 114 rapes per 100,000 people, compared with a rate of 32 rapes per 100,000 in the United States, according to police figures. Women’s rights groups estimate that only one in nine rapes is reported to police.

The definition of rape was until now narrow and outdated. Attacks on children, for instance, were often classified as indecent assault, not rape – even though the young are often targeted because of the mistaken belief that sex with a child can rid the body of the HIV virus.

The new law says that sexual penetration by objects other than a penis would be classed as rape – which usually is punished with a life sentence – rather than sexual assault, for which there are lesser sentences. For the first time, male-on-male sexual assault is classed as rape.

The new law introduces tougher measures to protect children and the mentally disabled from sexual exploitation and child pornography. It would also set up a register of sexual offenders so that schools and other institutions dealing with children could vet candidates for jobs.

The bill was approved by parliament before it went into recess last month after being held up for more than a year because of technical legal problems over the clauses about compulsory HIV tests for sexual offenders.

The revised legislation said all victims should be entitled to apply for a court order to compel the alleged sex offender to take an AIDS test, and should get free medication immediately after the rape to reduce the risks of contracting the virus. Given the delay in HIV infection showing up in tests, many women currently face weeks of agonized uncertainty over whether their attacker carried the deadly virus.

The provisions on AIDS testing will take effect in March because of the legal complexities involved, the Justice Ministry said.

A father is being charged with killing his infant son and assaulting his step daughter.

Authorities say, 18 year old Barry Jones has been charged with capital murder for the death of his 7 month old son, Kevin Christopher Jones, and the first degree assault of his 3 year old step daughter.

Investigators got involved when baby Kevin arrived at the East Alabama Medical Center Tuesday morning unresponsive, and not breathing.

Doctors say the infant had extensive injuries to his anus, chest, and rectum.

A short time later, the three year old arrived at the emergency room to be treated for internal bleeding from blunt trauma.

Exam delayed for ex-con accused of shooting girl, her mom – 7-year-old shot 6 times as she tried to protect her mother

A preliminary examination was postponed today in the case of a man accused of shooting a 7-year-old Detroit girl six times as she protected her mother.

Alexis Goggins has been hailed as a hero for suffering the wounds while coming to the defense of her mother, Selietha Parker.

Kelvin Tillie, a 29-year-old ex-con out on parole, was charged with several felonies, including assault with intent to commit murder. He is being held in the Wayne County Jail without bail.

His lawyer, Kim Basen Michon, asked for a competency evaluation today in 36th District Court.

A hearing is rescheduled for Feb. 14.

Still unable to speak, Alexis lost her right eye and slips in and out of consciousness. She is expected to live, but doctors won’t know about her quality of life until she undergoes more operations.

Newberg man accused of abuction and attempted rape

Authorities were holding a Newberg man today, accusing him of abducting and trying to rape a woman.

Ignacio Benito-Bejarnano, 29, was accused of second-degree kidnapping and attempted first-degree rape. He was held in the Yamhill County Corrections Facility on $600,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in Yamhill County Circuit Court on Dec. 6.

Newberg-Dundee police said a woman reported that she dropped off her children at a babysitter on Wednesday. She said while driving away, she was confronted by a man who had hidden in her van.

After a brief struggle, the man ran from the van, police said. The woman was not injured.

Police arrested Benito-Bejarnano Wednesday evening after an investigation.

Benito-Bejarnano also was facing charges by federal immigration officials.

Second-degree kidnapping is a Measure 11 crime under Oregon law and carries a minimum sentence of five years, 10 months in prison.

Indianapolis – The foster mother of TaJanay Bailey says she was saddened to hear about the girl’s death, but not surprised. TaJanay died Tuesday morning after sustaining injuries that police believe were inflicted by the people who were supposed to be caring for her: Charity Bailey, TaJanay’s mother, and Lawrence Green, Bailey’s boyfriend.

Bailey and Green are now facing murder charges. Janice Springfield, the foster mother who took care of TaJanay for most of her young life, says the system failed.

Springfield showed Eyewitness News video of TaJanay enjoying Christmas in 2006. She was with her foster parents opening gifts last year.

The video and photographs are all Janice Springfield has to remember the three-year-old. She received a phone call Tuesday informing her of the child’s death.

“I was just horrified, I was horrified. But I had a sinking feeling months ago that if this child was returned to them, this was what was going to happen,” said Springfield.

On at least three occasions, Springfield says, TaJanay was returned to her biological mother, Charity Bailey, then back to foster care. At one point, Springfield took the child to the hospital because of what she considered was evidence of abuse.

“She had old bruises around her neck, on her arms, on her legs, on her back,” said Springfield.

Man charged with killing seven on trial for jail troubles

Marion County – The man whom authorities consider the main triggerman in the slayings of seven members of an Indianapolis family is on trial for the troubles prosecutors say he caused in jail.

Desmond Turner is on trial in a Marion County court on a charge he committed battery by bodily waste by spitting on a jail guard.

Turner and James Stewart face murder charges for the June 2006 shooting deaths of four adults and three young children in a home on the city’s east side. Their trial is scheduled for February 2009.

A prosecutor says a pretrial conference scheduled for Thursday in the murder case will likely be postponed because of Turner’s battery trial.

Tuner and Stewart have been charged murder, criminal confinement, robbery, burglary and firearms violations in the June 2006 incident. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Turner, who they consider the main triggerman in the June 2006 killings on Indianapolis’ east side.

A judge rejected a plea deal from a father accused of throwing his infant son into a canal and leaving him there to die.

Charles Tyson, 22, was expected to plead guilty to second-degree murder Monday in West Palm Beach, which would have given him a 30 year prison sentence. But the judge rejected the deal which means Tyson is still facing the death penalty.

In April 2006, police said Tyson tossed his 9-month-old son from a car, slammed the baby onto the vehicle’s hood and then threw him into a canal. Tyson was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, child endangerment and violating a restraining order.

Prosecutors said they agreed to the plea deal at the request of the baby’s mother.

A trial date was set for April 21.

A teenager accused of taking part in the gang-rape and assault of a West Palm Beach woman and her 12-year-old son has agreed to plead guilty to charges of burglary and sexual battery and will testify against three other teens allegedly involved in the crime, WPBF News 25 reported.

Jakaris Taylor, 16, has agreed to plead guilty to three charges in the June Dunbar Village gang-rape, including one count of burglary with assault or battery with a firearm while wearing a mask and two counts of sexual battery by multiple perpetrators with a firearm while wearing a mask, WPBF reported. In the deal, the State Attorney’s Office will drop 11 other charges against Taylor.

Taylor will receive 20 years in prison and will testify against the other three teens arrested in the case: Tommy Lee Poindexter, 18, Nathan Walker Junior, 17, and Avion Lawson, 14. The three teens were arrested after being linked to the crime scene by DNA evidence, according to court documents released Nov. 1. Taylor had been linked to the crime through fingerprint evidence, police said.

Suspects accused of Thanksgiving Day rape

A man and a teenager are accused of sexually assaulting a woman on Thanksgiving Day.

The sheriff’s office says Jesus Vargas-Garcia, 33, is charged with sexual assault, false imprisonment and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

Hector Raul Gomez-pol, 17, is charged sexual assault.

Authorities say the two are co-workers. According to the victim, Vargas-Garcia wanted her to have sex with Gomez-pol.

She refused and Vargas-Garcia put a gun to her head. At that point, both allegedly sexually assaulted her.

She was eventually able to get away, but said that Vargas-Garcia caught her, dragged her back to the site of the assault and started to choke her.

The victim said he only stopped because someone knocked on the door – that’s when she was able to get away.

Vargas-Garcia and Gomez-pol were both arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail.

A man was taken to the hospital over the weekend after he says his friend’s roommate bit and kicked him during an argument.

It happened early Saturday morning at 4401 24th Place SW in Golden Gate.

Alex Hernandez walked into the Collier County Sheriff’s Office Golden Gate Substation just after midnight with bite marks on his arm and injuries to his head.

Hernandez told deputies that he had been attacked by Maximlilo Hildago-Hernandez, 37, while visiting a friend.

He said he was leaving the home when Hildago-Hernandez bit him on the arm. Hernandez says he was then pushed to the floor and Hildago-Hernandez started kicking him in the head.

After meeting with deputies, Hernandez was taken to Naples Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities went to the home where the attack took place and arrested Hildago-Hernandez. He is charged with felony battery causing disfigurement.

NEW YORK — From her baptism in Liberia to Christmas years later in her adopted New York City, Mamie Manneh never lost the longing to celebrate religious rituals by eating monkey meat.

Now, the tribal customs of Manneh and other West African immigrants have become the focus of an unusual criminal case charging her with meat smuggling, and touching on issues of religious freedom, infectious diseases and wildlife preservation.

The case “appears to be the first of its kind relating to that uniquely African product,” defense attorney Jan Rostal wrote in a pending motion to dismiss. “Unfortunately, it represents the sort of clash of cultural and religious values inherent in the melting pot that is America.”

At the center of the case in federal court is a modest woman with nine children and a history of domestic discord.

The case dates to early 2006, when federal inspectors at JFK Airport examined a shipment of 12 cardboard boxes from Guinea. They were addressed to Manneh and, according to a flight
manifest, contained African dresses and smoked fish with a value of $780.

Instead, stashed underneath the smoked fish, the inspectors found what West Africans refer to as bushmeat: “skulls, limbs and torsos of non-human primate species” plus the hoof and leg of a small antelope, according to court papers.

Three days later, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agents were at Manneh’s door, where she told them she ran a smoked fish importing business.

According to the agents, she initially denied ordering any bushmeat from Africa or ever eating it while in the United States.

But after she consented to a search, the agents came across a tiny, hairy arm hidden in her garage.

“Monkey,” she explained, claiming the arm was sent to her out of the blue “as a gift from God in heaven.”

Federal prosecutors hit Manneh with smuggling charges that accused her of violating import procedures and suggested she was a menace to man and beast alike.

A criminal complaint cited evidence that the illegal importation of bushmeat encourages the slaughter of protected wild animals.

More ominously, the complaint warned of “the potential health risks to humans linking bushmeat to diseases like Lassa fever, Ebola, HIV, SARS and monkeypox.”

Defense attorney Rostal has countered by accusing the government of picking on a poorly educated immigrant.

Her client’s only offense, she said, was her inability to grasp Western attitudes and highly technical regulations regarding bushmeat.

Defense papers also argue that the U.S. demand for the meat involved in the Manneh case — from Africa’s green monkey population — is “too small to have any significance for conservation.”

Manneh, 39, testified last year that before arriving in the United States more than 25 years ago, monkey meat was critical to her religious upbringing.

At age 7, “I was baptized and they used that for the baptizing ceremony,” she told a judge.

Manneh is already serving a two-year sentence in state prison for trying to run over a woman she suspected of sleeping with her husband, Zangar Jefferson. If convicted of the federal charges she faces up to five more years in prison and deportation.

“The government’s taking a woman away from her children,” complained Jefferson, who’s struggling to raise the children alone. “It’s very depressing, especially with the holidays right around the corner.”

The prosecution also has dampened spirits at the church in Staten Island where Manneh and other African immigrants once packed the pews to practice a religion blending Christianity and tribal customs.

One of the few worshippers left, Leona Artis, says the congregation’s appetite for monkey meat is deeply misunderstood.

Take Thanksgiving.

“Where some people have turkey, we’ll have monkey meat,” Artis said. “I’ve been eating it all my life. It’s delicious.” Baptisms, Easter, Christmas, weddings — all are occasions for eating monkey, Manneh’s supporters said in a sworn statement filed with the court.

The statement was vague about how the meat is obtained, but explains that it always arrives dried and smoked. Once blessed by a pastor, “we usually prepare it by cooking it for several hours into a stew,” they said.

For them, the exotic import is more than just food. “We eat bushmeat,” they said, “for our souls.”
