Carbondale Police said Thursday that authorities are looking for Carbondale residents Michael J. Thompson, 27, and Terrance A. Vinson, 29, both of whom should be considered armed and dangerous. Trevis S. Thompson, 21, of Carbondale was arrested and charged Wednesday with unlawful battery and unlawful restraint. He is in the Jackson County Jail on $250,000 bond, officials said.
Jackson County State’s Attorney Mike Wepsiec requested arrest warrants Wednesday for the three men stemming from an unlawful restraint investigation. Williamson County State’s Attorney Charles Garnati has not publicly announced when or if he will file murder charges against Michael Thompson and Vinson.
All three suspects are believed to be the culprits behind the alleged abductions of several Carbondale residents reported Tuesday.
“This was not a random situation,” said Carbondale Police Lt. Paul Echols. In regards to Carbondale man’s murder and the alleged abduction incident, Echols said “one flows into another.”
Police would not release further information on the report or the number of victims. Echols said police received a 911 call at about 5 p.m. Tuesday from one of the victims, who reported that the incident took place in the 300 block of North Wall Street.
Information led police to the area of Rocky Comfort Road in Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge, where all of the victims, except Slaughter, were found alive Tuesday. The body of Slaughter was found early Wednesday morning in the refuge area, according to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department.
An autopsy was conducted by a pathologist on Slaughter late last night, but Williamson County officials said they would not release the exact cause of death at this time. They are investigating his death as a homicide. Police said they could not release the relationship between the suspects and victims because of the pending investigation.
All three suspects and Slaughter have a criminal history, according to the Jackson County Court Web site.
Trevis Thompson was in court last week on charges of mob action and aggravated battery. He is scheduled to return later this month. In 2003, he was charged with shooting a volunteer assistant football coach at a Carbondale Community High School football game. The outcome of the case was unclear Thursday night.
Michael Thompson was charged with attempted murder in 1998, but the charge was later dismissed. In 2002, he was sentenced to two years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on drug charges.
Vinson has a criminal rap sheet dating back until 1997, according to the county court Web site. That year, he was sentenced to 24 months probation on the charge of mob action. In 2002, Vinson was sentenced to three years in the IDOC after he was found guilty of burglary.
No court date has been set for Trevis Thompson in this case, according to the Web site. Aggravated battery and unlawful restraint are both Class 3 felonies, and if found guilty, he could face a two- to five-year prison sentence for each charge.
Carbondale Police, Williamson County Sheriff’s Department, the Southern Illinois Enforcement Group and the FBI are involved in the continuing investigation. Information on funeral services for Slaughter was unknown Thursday evening.
